(Mirametrics) What are Messier Objects? • Messier objects are a list of astronomical sources compiled by Charles Messier, an 18th and early 19th century astronomer. He created a list of distracting objects to avoid while comet hunting. This list now contains over 110 objects, many of which are the most famous astronomical bodies known. The list contains planetary nebula, star clusters, and other galaxies. - Bobby Martinez The Telescope The telescope used to take these images is an Astronomical Consultants and Equipment (ACE) 24- inch (0.61-meter) Ritchey-Chretien reflecting telescope. It has a focal ratio of F6.2 and is supported on a structure independent of the building that houses it. It is equipped with a Finger Lakes 1kx1k CCD camera cooled to -30o C at the Cassegrain focus. It is equipped with dual filter wheels, the first containing UBVRI scientific filters and the second RGBL color filters. Messier 1 Found 6,500 light years away in the constellation of Taurus, the Crab Nebula (known as M1) is a supernova remnant. The original supernova that formed the crab nebula was observed by Chinese, Japanese and Arab astronomers in 1054 AD as an incredibly bright “Guest star” which was visible for over twenty-two months. The supernova that produced the Crab Nebula is thought to have been an evolved star roughly ten times more massive than the Sun. -

October 2018 Abstract This thesis is a study of possible stellar encounters of the Sun, both in the past and in the future within ±10 Myr of the current epoch. This study is based on data gleaned from the first Gaia data release (Gaia DR1). One of the components of the Gaia DR1 is the TGAS catalogue. TGAS contained five astrometric parameters for more than two million stars. Four separate catalogues were used to provide radial velocities for these stars. A linear motion approximation was used to make a cut within an initial catalogue keeping only the stars that would have perihelia within 10 pc. 1003 stars were found to have a perihelion distance less than 10 pc. Each of these stars was then cloned 1000 times from their covariance matrix from Gaia DR1. The stars’ orbits were numerically integrated through a model galactic potential. After the integration, a particularly interesting set of candidates was selected for deeper study. In particular stars with a mean perihelion distance less than 2 pc were chosen for a deeper study since they will have significant influence on the Oort cloud. 46 stars were found to have a mean perihelion distance less than 2 pc. -

In this paper, we discuss the work on comets of Caroline Herschel, the first female comet-hunter. After leaving Bath for the environs of Windsor Castle and eventually Slough, she discovered at least eight comets, five of which were reported in the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society. We consider her public image, astronomers' perceptions of her contributions, and the style of her astronomical drawings that changed with the technological developments in astronomical illustration. 1. General Introduction and the Herschels at Bath Building on the research of Michael Hoskini and our book on comets and meteors in British art,ii we examine the comets of Caroline Herschel (1750-1848), the first female comet-hunter and the first salaried female astronomer (Figure 1), who was more famous for her work on nebulae. She and her brother William revolutionized the conception of the universe from a Newtonian one—i.e., mechanical with God as the great clockmaker watching over its movements—to a more modern view—i.e., evolutionary. However, many fundamental questions regarding the composition, and formation mechanism remain unanswered. Atmospheres are a window into the properties of a planet, and spectroscopic studies can help resolve many of these questions. For the first part of my dissertation, I participated in two studies of the atmospheres of brown dwarfs to search for weather variations. To understand the evolution of weather on brown dwarfs we conducted a multi- epoch study monitoring four cool brown dwarfs to search for photometric variability. These cool brown dwarfs are predicted to have salt and sulfide clouds condensing in their upper atmosphere and we detected one high amplitude variable. Combining observations for all T5 and later brown dwarfs we note a possible correlation between variability and cloud opacity. For the second half of my thesis, I focused on characterizing the atmospheres of directly imaged exoplanets. In the first study Hubble Space Telescope data on HR8799, in wavelengths unobservable from the ground, provide constraints on the presence of clouds in the outer planets. Next, I present research done in collaboration with the Gemini Planet Imager Exoplanet Survey (GPIES) team including an exploration of the instrument contrast against environmental parameters, and an examination of the environment of the planet in the HD 106906 system. -

Abstract The calcium stable isotopic compositions of mantle-sourced rocks and minerals were investigated to better understand the carbon cycle in the Earth’s mantle. Bulk carbonatites and kimberlites were analyzed to identify a geochemical signature of carbonatite magmatism, while inter-mineral fractionation was measured in co-existing Ca-bearing carbonate and silicate minerals. Bulk samples show a range of composition deviating from the bulk silicate Earth δ44/40Ca composition indicating signatures of magmatic processes or marine carbonate addition 44/40 to source materials. Δ Cacarbonate-silicate values range from -0.55‰ to +1.82‰ and positively correlate with Ca/Mg ratios in pyroxenes. -

The near-Earth asteroid population suggests the existence of an inner Main Belt source of asteroids that belongs to the spec- troscopic X-complex and has moderate albedos. The identification of such a source has been lacking so far. We argue that the most probable source is one or more collisional asteroid families that escaped discovery up to now. Methods. We apply a novel method to search for asteroid families in the inner Main Belt population of asteroids belonging to the X- complex with moderate albedo. Instead of searching for asteroid clusters in orbital elements space, which could be severely dispersed when older than some billions of years, our method looks for correlations between the orbital semimajor axis and the inverse size of asteroids. This correlation is the signature of members of collisional families, which drifted from a common centre under the effect of the Yarkovsky thermal effect. Results. We identify two previously unknown families in the inner Main Belt among the moderate-albedo X-complex asteroids. -

Close stellar encounters could deÑect large numbers of comets into the inner solar system, which would increase the impact hazard at Earth. We Ðnd that the rate of close approaches by star systems (single or multiple stars) within a distance D (in parsecs) from the Sun is given by N \ 3.5D2.12 Myr~1, less than the number predicted by a simple stellar dynamics model. However, this value is clearly a lower limit because of observational incompleteness in the Hipparcos data set. One star, Gliese 710, is estimated to have a closest approach of less than 0.4 pc 1.4 Myr in the future, and several stars come within 1 pc during a ^10 Myr interval. -
