Demographics • An estimated 91,123 people live in East Londonderry, the Constituency with the 6th lowest population in 2008. • The majority (59.2%) of people living in East Londonderry are of Protestant community background.

The Economy • East Londonderry was the Constituency that received 2nd lowest amount of financial assistance from Invest NI in 2008/09 totalling £2.31 million. • A higher proportion of ‘Invest NI Start a Business’ participants from East Londonderry were offered financial assistance compared to the Northern Ireland figure, the 2 nd highest proportion.

3 Employment • 32,419 employee jobs are located in East Londonderry. • In 2009, East Londonderry was the Constituency with the 9th highest number of redundancies with a total of 185 redundancies in the area.

Housing • There are 39,434 properties in East Londonderry. East Londonderry has a higher proportion of detached properties and a lower proportion of terraced properties compared to Northern Ireland. • In 2008/09, 1,248 new planning applications were received for the East Londonderry area.

Crime Compared to the Northern Ireland rates, East Londonderry has: • A higher overall crime and anti-social behaviour incident rate. • Higher rates of criminal damage and violent crime. • Lower burglary and theft rates.

Poverty • East Londonderry has the 9th highest proportion of people (14%) living in the most deprived Super Output Areas in Northern Ireland. • A slightly lower proportion of people aged 16 and over living in East Londonderry are claiming income support compared to Northern Ireland as a whole.

2010 Westminster Election Results • 63,220 people eligible to vote, the turnout at 55.3% was comparable to the Northern Ireland turnout of 56.7% • DUP candidate Gregory Campbell won the East Londonderry seat.

2007 Assembly Election Results • 56,104 people were eligible to vote, the turnout at 60.9% was comparable to the Northern Ireland turnout of 62.3%. • The DUP won 3 seats. The UUP, SDLP and Sinn Féin won 1 seat each.

5 1. DEMOGRAPHICS This section presents information on the population size, community background and age profile of those living in East Londonderry.

Population Size As at June 2008, an estimated 91,123 people live in East Londonderry, representing 5.1% of the Northern Ireland population (Source: Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA), Mid-Year Estimates) .

East Londonderry is the Constituency with the 6th lowest population.

Community Background The majority (59.2%) of people living in East Londonderry are of Protestant community background. Just over a third (37.9%) of people living in East Londonderry are of Catholic community background. The remainder are of other or no community background (Source: NISRA, Census 2001 ).

Age profile of East Londonderry East Londonderry has a similar proportion of people aged under 16 (21.4% vs. 21.5%) and a similar proportion of people aged 60 and over (20.0% vs. 19.2%) to all of Northern Ireland.

7 Life Expectancy of males The life expectancy 1 of males (2006-2008) living in East Londonderry is estimated to be 77.6 years.

There is little difference in the life expectancy of males living in East Londonderry and that of all Northern Ireland males of 76.4 years.

8 Life Expectancy of Females The life expectancy 3 of females (2006-2008) living in East Londonderry is estimated to be 82.5 years.

As with males, there is little difference in the life expectancy of females living in East Londonderry and that of all Northern Ireland females of 81.3 years.

12 Deaths due to Suicide and Undetermined Intent During the period 2004-2008, there were 46 deaths as a result of suicide and undetermined intent 67 in East Londonderry. This equates to an average rate 8 of 10 per 100,000 persons per annum.

The average death rate due to suicide and undetermined intent is slightly lower for East Londonderry than the Northern Ireland rate of 13 per 100,000 persons.

13 Cancer Diagnoses In 2007, there were 356 new incidences of cancer 910 diagnosed for East Londonderry. This equates to a rate of 390 per 100,000 persons.

The rate of cancer diagnosis was lower for East Londonderry than the Northern Ireland rate of 439 per 100,000 persons.

East Londonderry was the Constituency with the 4 th lowest rate of cancer diagnosis in Northern Ireland.

During the period 2003-2007, rates of cancer diagnosis per 100,000 persons were lowest in the wards of Greysteel (224), Upper Glenshane (239) and Knocklynn (269) and highest in the wards of Central (704), Mount Sandel (600) and Royal Portrush (597). 11

14 Hospital Admissions due to Self Harm For the period 2005-2009, the standardised hospital admission ratio for self harm 12 in East Londonderry stood at 59. Ratios are calculated to allow comparison of areas or groups to the NI average which is set to 100.

The standardised hospital admission ratio for self harm is lower in East Londonderry than the Northern Ireland ratio of 100. This is true for both males (60 compared to 100) and females (58 compared to 100).

15 Mood and Anxiety Disorder Prescriptions As at April 2008, an estimated 10.5% of people in East Londonderry were on prescribed drugs for mood and anxiety disorders.13

A slightly lower proportion of people in East Londonderry were estimated to be on prescribed drugs for mood and anxiety disorders when compared to the Northern Ireland estimate of 11.5%.

East Londonderry was the Constituency with the 5th lowest proportion people estimated to be on prescribed drugs for mood and anxiety disorders.

13 The number of individuals suffering from mood or anxiety disorders is estimated using prescription data by GP practice for anxiolytic and anti-depressant drugs. This data is then attributed to geographical area using the GP practice list.

16 Disability-related Benefit Recipients In February 2010, there were 11,834 people in receipt of at least one disability- related benefit.14 This equates to 13.0% of all constituents receiving disability- related benefits.

A slightly lower proportion of people living in East Londonderry were in receipt of disability-related benefits compared with the Northern Ireland figure of 14.6%.

East Londonderry was the Constituency with the 8th lowest proportion of people in receipt of disability-related benefits.

The lowest proportions of people in receipt of disability-related benefits were concentrated in the wards of Knocklynn (7.9%), Strand (, 8.2%) and Waterside (8.5%) and the highest proportions were concentrated in the wards of Central (Coleraine, 24.8%), Roeside (23.5%) and Greystone (22.1%).

17 Births to Teenage Mothers

Proportion of all births which are to teenage mothers In 2008, there were 95 births to teenage mothers. Births to teenage mothers accounted for 8.0% of all births in East Londonderry, although it is worth noting that this figure is influenced by the number of teenagers in the area and so the teenage birth rate (see over) is more accurate for the purposes of comparison between areas.

A slightly higher proportion of births in East Londonderry were to teenage mothers compared to the Northern Ireland average (5.6%).

18 Teenage Birth rate In 2008, the teenage birth rate of East Londonderry stood at 22 per 1,000 female persons aged 13-19 years.

The teenage birth rate was higher for East Londonderry than the overall Northern Ireland rate of 17 per 1,000 female persons aged 13-19.

19 Quality Outcomes Framework – Disease Prevalence The Quality Outcome Framework (QOF) is a system used to remunerate general practices; disease prevalence data per 1,000 persons is collected and then used within the QOF to deliver a more equitable distribution of payments in the light of different workloads that practices face.15

As at 31 March 2009, there was a lower prevalence of hypertension and a higher prevalence of hypothyroid, obesity (patients aged 16+) and chronic kidney disease (patients aged 18+) amongst patients whose GP practice is located in the East Londonderry area compared to GP practices across all of Northern Ireland.

Statement of Special Educational Needs In 2008/09, 12.1% of post-primary pupils had a Statement of Special Educational Need (SEN) at stages 1-4.

The proportion of post-primary pupils with a SEN at stages 1-4 was slightly lower for East Londonderry than the Northern Ireland proportion of 14.9%.

East Londonderry was the Constituency with the 7th lowest proportion of pupils with a SEN at stages 1-4.

The proportion of post-primary pupils with a SEN at stages 1-4 was lowest concentrated in the wards of Portstewart (0.0%), Roeside (0.0%) and Waterside (3.5%) and highest in the wards of Greystone (27.4%), Coolessan (21.8%) and Forest (20.8%).

21 Highest Qualifications of School Leavers

School leavers achieving at least two A-levels In 2008/09, 48.2% of East Londonderry school leavers achieved at least two A- levels.

A slightly lower proportion of pupils from East Londonderry left school with at least two A-levels compared to the overall Northern Ireland figure of 50.6%.

East Londonderry was the Constituency with the 5th lowest proportion of school leavers achieving at least two A-levels.

The lowest proportions of school leavers achieving at least two A-levels were concentrated in the wards of Churchland (10.0%, 3 pupils), Ballysally (10.7%, 3 pupils) and Coolessan (16.7%, 3 pupils) The highest proportions of school leavers achieving at least two A-levels were concentrated in the wards of Roeside (100%, 3 pupils), Strand (86.7%) and Mount Sandel (73.7%).16

Of all East Londonderry students enrolled, 22.5% were full time and 77.5% were part time students, while 45.2% were female and 54.8% were male. In total, 35.4% of those enrolled in Further Education were mature students.19

26 Start a Business Programme

Participation in the Start a Business Programme In 2008/09, 187 people from East Londonderry completed the Invest NI Start a Business Programme.

East Londonderry was the Constituency with the 7th highest number of people completing this programme.

The lowest numbers of participants who completed the training were from the wards of Cross Glebe (2), Dundooan (2), Feeny (2), Greystone (2) and Roeside (2). The highest numbers were from Aghanloo (15), Hopefield (12), Portstewart (10) and The Cuts (10).

28 5. EMPLOYMENT This section presents information on the number of employee jobs and employee jobs by sector; the number of redundancies in East Londonderry and the unemployment claimant count.

Employee jobs As at 3 September 2007, there were 32,419 employee jobs 21 located in East Londonderry, representing 4.6% of all employee jobs in Northern Ireland.

East Londonderry was the Constituency with the 7th lowest number of employee jobs located in the Constituency.

The lowest concentrations of employee jobs were in the wards of Churchland (97), Greystone (109) and Strand (Coleraine, 114) and the highest concentrations were in the wards of Central Coleraine (4,894), University (2,418) and Mount Sandel (2,395) although it is worth noting that these figures are based on job location not home address and so variations between wards will depend on the nature of the ward - rural, residential, or industrial.

Information on anti-social behaviour rates is also presented in this section. These figures relate to where the offence occurred rather than where the offender was from.

Overall Crime rate In 2009/10, a total of 6,398 offences were recorded in East Londonderry, representing 5.9% of all offences recorded in Northern Ireland. This equates to an overall crime rate of 7,021 per 100,000 persons.

The crime rate for East Londonderry was higher than the overall Northern Ireland rate of 6,149 per 100,000 persons.

East Londonderry was the Constituency with the 4 th highest crime rate.

36 Crime Rates by type - violent crime, burglary, theft and criminal damage

Rates of burglary and theft were lower in East Londonderry while violent crime and criminal damage rates were higher in East Londonderry than the Northern Ireland rates.

Violent Crime In 2009/10, the violent crime rate for East Londonderry was 2,408 per 100,000 persons and was higher than the Northern Ireland rate. Violent crime rates were lowest in the wards of The Highlands (338), Feeny (407) and Forest (554) and highest in the wards of Roeside (12,050), Central (11,022) and Royal Portrush (9,917).

Burglary In 2009/10, the burglary rate for East Londonderry was 702 per 100,000 persons and was lower than the Northern Ireland rate. Burglary rates were lowest in the wards of Forest (158), Ballysally (221) and Kilrea (235) and highest in the wards of Strand (2,551), Roeside (1,939) and Atlantic (1,844).

Theft In 2009/10, the theft rate for East Londonderry was 1,370 per 100,000 persons and was lower than the Northern Ireland rate. Theft rates were lowest in the wards of Knocklynn (252), Glack (282) and Ringsend (493) and highest in the wards of Central (8,053), Roeside (7,895) and Mount Sandel (6,696).

Criminal Damage In 2009/10, the criminal damage rate for East Londonderry was 1,781 per 100,000 persons and was higher than the Northern Ireland rate. Criminal damage rates were lowest in the wards of Ringsend (269), Feeny (362) and Glack (471) and highest in the wards of Roeside (7,202), Central (5,540) and Royal Portrush (5,394).

37 Anti-social Behaviour In 2009/10, there were 5,070 incidents of anti-social behaviour in East Londonderry. This equates to an anti-social behaviour incident rate of 5,564 per 100,000 persons.

The rate of anti-social behaviour incidents was higher in East Londonderry than the overall Northern Ireland rate of 4,625 per 100,000 persons.

38 8. DEPRIVATION & POVERTY This section presents information from the Northern Ireland Multiple Deprivation Measure 2010 and on the number of people claiming benefits.

Northern Ireland Multiple Deprivation Measure The Northern Ireland Multiple Deprivation Measure (NIMDM) 2010 identifies small concentrations of multiple deprivation across Northern Ireland. Summaries at Constituency level consisting of five measures are also produced. The following contains the summary information for East Londonderry.

Extent East Londonderry has an Extent of 14%. This means that 14% of people living in East Londonderry live in the most 27 deprived Super Output Areas 28 in Northern Ireland. East Londonderry is the Constituency ranked 9 out of 18 in terms of Extent.

Income Deprivation Scale The Income Deprivation Scale shows that there are 23,072 people in East Londonderry experiencing Income Deprivation ( defined as being in receipt of income-related benefits/tax credits) . East Londonderry is the Constituency ranked 10 out of 18 on this measure of deprivation.

Employment Deprivation Scale The Employment Deprivation Scale shows that 7,132 people in East Londonderry are experiencing employment deprivation ( defined as being in receipt of employment-related benefits or on a government training programme) . Deprivation within East Londonderry The most deprived areas in East Londonderry covered the wards of Coolessan and Greystone as well as parts of Ballysally which were ranked in the 10% most deprived areas in Northern Ireland.

The least deprived areas in East Londonderry was within the ward of Knocklynn which and ranked in the 10% least deprived areas in Northern Ireland.

40 Benefit Claimants As at April 2010, there were 27,309 people in East Londonderry were claiming at least one benefit. This equates to 38.1% of constituents aged 16 and over claiming at least one benefit.

There was little difference in the proportion of people aged 16 and over living in East Londonderry claiming at least one benefit and the Northern Ireland figure of 37.6%.

East Londonderry was the Constituency with the 7th highest proportion of people aged 16 and over claiming at least one benefit.

Proportions of people claiming at least one benefit were lowest in the wards of Knocklynn (20.9%), Greysteel (21.5%) and Aghanloo (22.1%) and highest in the wards of Central (48.5%), Roeside (48.1%) and Greystone (44.2%). 29

41 Income Support As at February 2010, there were 4,201 people claiming Income Support in East Londonderry. This equates to 7.5% of working age constituents claiming this benefit.

There was little difference in the proportion of working age people living in East Londonderry claiming Income Support and Northern Ireland figure of 8.0%.

East Londonderry was the Constituency with the 8th highest proportion of Income Support claimants.

The lowest proportions of Income Support claimants were concentrated in the wards of Strand (1.2%), Dunluce (1.5%) and Agivey (1.6%) and the highest proportions were concentrated in the wards of Coolessan (13.2%), Greystone (12.1%) and Ballysally (9.8%). 30

42 Housing Benefit As at May 2009, there were 7,161 people claiming Housing Benefit. This equates to 10.0% of constituents aged 16 and over claiming this benefit.

There was no difference in the proportion of people aged 16 and over living in East Londonderry claiming Housing Benefit and the Northern Ireland figure, also 10.0%.

East Londonderry was the Constituency ranked joint 7th highest in terms of the proportion of people aged 16 and over claiming Housing Benefit along with Upper Bann.

The lowest proportions of Housing Benefit claimants were concentrated in the wards of Ringsend (2.8%), Agivey (2.8%) and Dunluce (3.0%) and the highest proportions were concentrated in the wards of Central (20.8%), Greystone (19.1%) and Coolessan (18.3%). 31

43 9. ELECTION RESULTS This section presents information on the 2010 Westminster Election Results and the 2007 Assembly Election Results.

2010 Westminster Election Results In East Londonderry, 63,220 people were eligible to vote in the 2010 Westminster Elections. 34,950 valid votes were cast, a turnout of 55.3%. 32 There was little difference in the turnout for East Londonderry and the Northern Ireland turnout of 56.7%. The Democratic Unionist Party received the majority of votes in the Constituency with 12,097 votes. As a result Gregory Campbell was elected to represent East Londonderry.

44 2007 Assembly Election Results In East Londonderry, 56,104 people were eligible to vote in the 2007 Assembly Elections. 33,922 valid votes were cast, a turnout of 60.5%. 33 Turnout for East Londonderry was slightly lower than the Northern Ireland turnout of 62.3%. The Democratic Unionist Party won 3 seats while Sinn Féin, the Ulster Unionist Party and the Social Democratic and Labour Party won 1 seat each.
