La Ong Fong: Thai Pop Band

La Ong Fong (ละอองฟอง) is a Thai band formed in 1996. Their musical genre is very much influenced by modern vintage, pop and Swedish pop. The name of the band was originally derived from the French word ‘enfant’ meaning ‘children’. This was transliterared to a more Thai sounding word namely ‘ong-fong’ (อองฟอง). In Thai, the words have a meaning of their own since ‘la-ong’ (ละออง) means ‘drizzle’ and ‘fong’ (ฟอง) is ‘bubble’.

Present members of the band: Ae, On & Man*

La Ong Fong’s music is predominantly feel-good pop music. Their songs are vibrant, cheerful combining pop, jazz and also rock. The lead singer’s vioce is bright and clear.

Today, the band is a trio. The lead singer is ‘On’ Kornkamol Chaiwatanametin. The other two members are ‘Ae’ Pongchuk Pissathanporn (Bass & Vocal) and ‘Man’ Tanupop Notayanont (Guitar & Vocal). They are the present members of La Ong Fong.

La Ong Fong, Thai band*

Actually, the band was launched after Ae and Chompoo met in the Coke Duet Singing Contest back in 1988. ‘Chompoo’ Visa Attaseri was the fist lead singer of the band. She became an artist at GMM Grammy and thus invited Ae to join her.

Ae, on the other hand, asked ‘Fluke’ Danop Srikao whom he knew from scholl to be the drummer. Furthermore, Ae also invited his collegue ‘Nhong’ Witchaya Watthanasup (keyboards) and ‘Man’ Tanupop Notayanont (guitar) to complete the band. Thus, La Ong Fong was born! However, in this constellation the band only produced one album ‘Volume1’. Even though this album was successful, the band was dispersed.

La Ong Fong had a comeback in 2004 when they released the EP Album ‘Volume 2’. Now the band had only three members. Since this EP Album was well-received by the audience, the band deceided to release a full album called Cozy Collection in 2005. Here is ‘Tang Jai Deaw’ (Each heart), a very popular song from the Cozy Collection.

A few recordings at Spicy Disc followed until in 2011 the band came up with a fresh look releasing the album called ‘Wind-up City’. In particular the sound of the song ‘Ab Chob’ (แอบชอบ , like) became iconic.

In 2014, La Ong Fong also ‘turned’ Japanese releasing a five- track EP called ‘Feel Romance Nagasaki’. What is more, the band’s members have also been ambassadors for Nagasaki in Japan. Thus, they also recorded some of their popular hits in Japanese.

Finally, we may say that La Ong Fong is a Thai band making beautiful and versatile music that is gaining popularity even beyond . Enjoy their amazing sound!

Kanyarat Tiyapornchai, better known as Lula, is a popular Thai singer. Her genre is mainly bossa nova and pop. Hence, her music ranges from sweet ballads to sunny and cheerful pop songs. What is more, she also plays the ukulele to accompany some of her songs. She is versatile, likes Brazilian music and also played some Thai indie music at the beginning of her career.

Thai Singer Lula

Lula (ลุลา), Kanyarat Tiyapornchai*

Here is one of her early bossa nova inspired songs. Thus, it does not come as a surprise that Lula is known as Thai bossa nova queen

However, she also likes electro pop music and this is also reflected in her latest single called ‘Not too far’ (Hang mai klai). In fact, Lula grew up with this kind of music and she even calls electro pop her musical origin

In the 1990s, she enjoyed listening to alternative and electronic music. Her favourite bands in this genre are Kidnappers and Siam Secret Service.

Lula’s new electro pop look, preferring the colours black & white*

Before turing to making music, Lula studied in at the Swinburne University of Technology. Her early songs are mainly bossa nova rhythms paired with feel-good pop music. A few examples of her hits are “Took Ka Ta Na Rod (Girl in the Front Seat),” “Wae La Mai Chauy A Rai (Time Can’t Cure)”, “Mong Dai Tae Ya Chob (You Can Look, But Don’t Flirt) and “Khrai Khon Neung”.

In addition, she has collaborated with other popular Thai musicians and bands like Jetset’er, Soul After Six and Calories Blah Blah. Futher, she sang duets with legendary Bird McIntyre and Sin Singular, for instance. Thus, she also worked on soundtracks for Thai TV series and generally, she very much appreciates film music. For instance, she favours the soundtrack of ‘The Secret Life of Walter Mitty’ at the moment.

Thai singer Lula*

Her newest song may be regarded as being different from her former musical style. However, even though it has some electronic rhythms, it is still very much influenced by pop music. Up until now, she has released three albums and a forth is supposed to be upcoming soon. Lula’s new electro pop look*

In fact, she has sung so many beautiful duets with other Thai artists like this one from a lakorn with Pijika who is also a Thai singer I very much like.

Finally, we may observe that Thai singer Lula has changed her style from a dainty, feminine look to a more simple yet sophisticated look preferring the colours black and white. Her musical style ranges from bossa nova to electro pop. Nevertheless, she always remains true to herself

He had his first hit last year featuring the emotional slow rock song ‘Mong Tae Mai Hen, Fung Tae Mai Dai Yin’ (Ignore and Turn a Deaf Ear, in Thai: มองแต่ไม่เห็นฟังแต่ไม่ได้ ยิน). He is now an artist at GMM Grammy and Duckbar. Since his first hit single, he has released several other songs which are also featured in Thai TV series.

For instance, his song ‘Rak Tae Mee Yuu Jing’ (True Love Exists, in Thai: รักแท้มีอยู่จริง) is featured in the drama Kad Chueak (Old Thai Boxing) starring half-Thai actor Mik Thongraya among others. This is a slow rock song encouraging the listeners to believe in true love and that this sincere love will find them one day.

He also covered an Oak-smith Arayaskul song called ‘Ta Kwam Kid Thung Kha Kon Dai’ (If Missing You Could Kill Me, in Thai: ถ้าความคิดถึงฆ่าคนได้) that is featured in the romantic comedy Kaew Ta Wan Jai (Sweetheart). It is a pop song but he arranged it to be more rocking to suit his style.

Saran has always been interested in making music and wanted to become a rock star. He started singing when he was a child and later in his early teenage years, he took some music lessons learning to play the guitar, bass and singing professionally.

Patrick Kronenberger: Thai- German Singer

Patrick Kronenberger is a Thai-German singer and songwriter. Born in November 1988 in Hanau, Germany to a Thai mother and a German father, he moved to Berlin in 2010 to dedicate his life to making music. He also plays the piano since his childhood. He writes, sings and produces all his songs himself.

Singer & songwriter Patrick Kronenberger, photo by Marcel Gothow*

Patrick Kronenberger

Since he is a great fan of film music, Patrick calls his musical genre ‘cinema pop’. The special feature of his songs is that he combines classical and modern music in an innovative manner. What is more, his songs are more than just stories – in fact, his lyrics are similar to movie scripts and they have a dramatical action.

Patrick’s songs are predominantly in German and he likes German singers like Nena, Peter Maffay and Udo Jürgens. However, he is already popular in Thailand since his English single ‘Can You Hear Me’ has been well received there. Patrick Kronenberger (photo credit: John Aigner)*

In addition, when he was in Thailand for holiday last year, he got together with one of the most renowned Thai music producer and they translated his German song ‘Zurück Zu Dir’ into Thai. Thus, the song is called ‘Cheewit ti lur’ (ชีวิตที่เหลือ) in Thai. A record company was enthusiastic about the song. Hence, they organized a spontaneous concert at the Hard Rock Café in . The concert was a sellout!

What is more, Patrick is the official cultural ambassador for Germany/Thailand. Thus, he received the ‘Thainess Award’ by Princess Ubolratana Mahidol at the ITB 2015 in Berlin (Internationale Tourismus-Börse). He wants to give Thai as well as German people an understanding of each others culture. Hence, he will collaborate with the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) this year and some projects are already planned. Patrick receives the Thainess Award by Princess Ubolratana Mahidol in Berlin (photo credit: burning-music.de)

Patrick prefers small concerts at clubs to playing for a big audience at stadiums because he enjoys being close to his audience. Nevertheless, he already performed at big concerts alongside stars like Avril Lavigne and Kelly Rowland. For his latest single ‘Für einen letzten Versuch’ (For a last try), he went on tour with the US boyband ‘O-Town’.

Patrick’s music may best be described as modern, rocking but also melancholic sometimes. He also wants to preserve old values. Hence, his single ‘Wie Früher’ (‘As It Used To Be’) takes the audience on a melancholy time journey combining past, present and future. He wants to bring inner values back into people’s conscience and is against the fast moving nature of modern times.

Finally, we may say that Patrick Kronenberger is a thoroughbread musician with a laid-back style and an amiable personality who takes the ideas for his songs from experiences in real life. Thus, his motto is: ‘Life is like a movie, I only write the soundtrack to it’. ‘Wie Früher’, photo by John Aigner*

Singto Numchok – Thai Singer & Ukulele Player

Singto Numchok (Numchoke Tanud-rum) is a well-known singer and ukulele player who grew up in Buriram, Thailand. His musical style is similar to that of Jack Johnson, Ben Harper and Bruno Mars. Hence, he combines cool jazz sounds with beach surf-rock and pop into a crossover style. He is known for creating feel- good songs Singto Numchok*

Singto Numchok’s Story

When he was in this teens, Singto had to leave school and work in a factory because his family was very poor. At the factory, he would play the guitar during lunchtime. At that time he felt very much inspired by the singer Beau Sunita who encouraged him to pursue his dream to become a famous musician. Hence, a fire was lit in him and he decided to realize his heart’s desire.

Singha Tooe, as he is also called, knew that he could achieve anything if he truly pursued his aim. He did not belive in chance or luck. Thus he took his fate into his own hands trying to make the most of himself and his talents. At the beginning of his artist career, Singto and his friends performed their music at pubs but they were not very successful. Eventually, Singto joined the band Mono and recorded two albums with them. However, their songs were no hits either. The famous Thai singer & ukulele player*

Nevertheless, Singto would not give up, he loved being at the beach and performing music there. Hence, he left the band Mono moving to Phuket. There he recorded his first album called ‘Singto Numchok’ in 2010 with the record label Pollen Sound. His first single was called ‘Yoo Tor Loet Dai Mai (Can I Stay)” and this song combines soul rhythms with pop.

Apart from playing the guitar, he also tried the ukulele and became very popular playing it. Thus, Singto won the big prize at the first Thailand Ukulele Competition. He received a B16,000 ukulele

He also released an album named ‘Sticky Rice’ in English since Universal Music liked his music too. This album should sell internationally since he has also performed at music festivals overseas, for example in Japan and Hawaii. Thus, today Singto is also known as an artist in other Asian countries like Japan, Malaysia and the Philippines. In addition, his music is loved in Hawaii because of its surf-rock vibe.

What is more, he produced some popular covers of all-time favourite and classic songs like Stevie Wonder’sMy Cherie Amour and Marvin Gaye’s What’s going on. Up until today he has also cooperated with many renowned artists likeJoey Boy, Palmy, Stamp and Mr . Lazy, for instance. Gene Kasidit – Diva, Fashionista & Agent Provocateur

Gene Kasidit can be best described as an agent provocateur and a gender bending persona. She is well-known in Thailand as a indie music icon. In the last years, she has also established herself as a fashionista and an electro pop diva. She enjoys fancy dressing for the purposes of entertainment and self-expression. Thus, she both shocks and awes people with an unconventional style, fancy appearance and dazzling personality. Gene Kasidit

Gene Kasidit (photo credit: Chubbychain Wongleamthong)*

When I first came across Gene Kasidit, I was at once reminded of David Bowie and Courtney Love. I think Gene can be described as a mixture of them both, nevertheless, she has a lot more to offer. She is very versatile and her voice is incredible too. Melancholic, lovelorn or aggressive vibes, she masters them all with flying colours.

Gene grew up singing traditional Thai music and in her teenage years, she became increasingly interested in Brit Pop. Thus, after finishing school, she backpacked around the world getting to know other cultures and improving her English language skills. Gene Kasidit (photo credit: Natthapon Tae Wuttipetch for A DAY Magazine)*

Hence, she also became a writer for the BK magazine while being the lead singer with Futon, the legendary multi-national electro-clash band. Gene became recognized as a singer with Futon and the band was very popular in the Thai indie music community.

Gene left Futon after receiving the opportunity to work with the music label smallroom. The first solo album ‘Affairs’ was released in 2009. This album is characterized by personal lyrics, subtle rythyms but also energetic beats. Lyrics in Thai language are also prominent in ‘Affairs’. She describes the album as being ‘about the love hate relationship with myself, love, sex, lust, friendship and the little things that keep me (in)sane and move on’ (interview with CNN).

Gene was renowed for her amazing album and related show ‘Blonde to be wild’ in 2014. The show may best be described as high energy electro pop paired with stunning costumes created by Thai designers. In fact, the show has been termed a ‘little Elle Fashion Show’. This album can be considered the opposite to ‘Affairs’ which is rather dark and melancholic. ‘Blonde’ however, is bright and carefree. It is about having fun and being free of labels.

Summing up, we may say that Gene Kasidit is truly a versatile, fancy but also candid diva. Seeing Gene perform in videos always makes me smile because her appearance is weird and funny but at the same time it is truly sincere. Apart from singing, she is also a fashionista who likes supporting Thai designers and also enjoys shopping vintage items. As Gene says, she can be anything with good reason

Yours, Sirinya

Peter Corp Dyrendal – Thai- Danish Singer, Model & Actor

Peter Corp Dyrendal was born on 1.January 1976 in Ishøj, Denmark where he was raised. Being half-Thai, he often went to Thailand as a kid where he would stay with his aunt in Bangkok. He went there almost every year during vacations. When Peter was 17 years old, his aunt pushed him to go for a camera test with a modeling agency. The following year, Peter was back in Bangkok and did some modelling jobs which were at that time mostly for fun.

Peter Corp Dyrendal Peter Corp Dyrendal*

However, when he was 19 he got a promising offer by a Thai advertising agency. On this occasion, he was also discovered as a singer and an artist: Peter was on a modelling job on a beach in Thailand playing the guitar. That was when one of the team members became aware of Peter’s potential as a musician. Hence, he was invited to the Thai record company GMM Grammy for a test.

Thus, Peter was encouraged to try a career as a singer and began taking sinning lessons. A few months later, he signed his contract with GMM Grammy and his debut album ‘Hin Pha Ga Darb’ (1998) became a great success and made him a famous ‘luk kreung’ singer in Thailand. However, the following albums were not so successful. For this reason, he went behind the scenes and worked for the production company Nebula.

Peter also went into acting in Thai TV series (Lakorn). Up until now he starred in five TV dramas. For instance, in 2002 he acted alongside Marsha Vadhanapanich in ‘Sai Lom Kub Saeng Dao’ (Wind and Starlight). In this drama, he played the role of a water sport instructor of Thai-New Zealand descent. I think the following clip is from this film

In 2012 he was in ‘Noom Baan Rai Khub Whan Jai Hiso’ (Farmer boy and High-society sweetheart) with Thai-British actress Araya A. Hargate. What is more, he also starred in the 2011 Thai movie Fabulous 30.

Lovely picture of Peter with his cat*

There is also the drama ‘Narng Rai Sai Lub’ (Villain’s spy) with Rasri Balenciaga and finally ‘Ab Ruk Online’ (Secret love online) with the renowned Thai-Swedish actress Ann Thongprasom. Here is a song from the latter drama ‘Ab Ruk Online’ featuring Peter.

Today, Peter is still an actor and married to Ployphan Taweerat since 2013. They have a little son called Panther, his name is thus a mix of the parent’s names. A next son is expected soon who should be called Puma. Hence, it seems that Peter and his wife keep the ‘P’s and stick to the feline theme as well Peter, Ploy & son Panther (photo credit: asianfuse.net)

By the way, Peter is the older brother ofMichael Corp Dyrendal who is an entrepreneur and who also has experience in the Thai entertainment industry.

Summing up, we may say that even though Peter Corp Dyrendal has been working for about 20 years in the entertainment business, he is still going strong and we are curious to know what he will come up with next.

Chin Chinawut Indracusin: Thai-French Singer

When I started becoming interested in about three to four years ago, Chinawut-Stéphane Indracusin, who is also known as ‘Chin‘, was the first prominent singer that I came across. Chin, born in 1989, is Thai-French. Thus, he is also a ‘luk kreung’ successful in Thai entertainment industry.

Chin Chinawut (photo credit: pinterest.com)

He started his singing career relatively early by taking part in the GMM Grammy young artist development program called ‘G- Junior’. In 2003 he came together with Guy and Jay who were also young musicians from ‘G-Junior’. Together they formed the group ‘Big 3’. At this time they primarily made , Rap and R&B music. However, three years later in 2006 the boys from ‘Big 3’ wanted to pursue their own solo careers. This was after the release of their album ‘We are Big 3’.

Chin Chinawut

Chin’s first solo album, released in 2007, has the upbeat title ‘Chin Up’. Hence, his first solo single “Bpak Mai Trong Gub Jai” was a great success and made him a top music star in Thailand. Chin, Thai-French singer*

The second album ‘Maybe I’m bad’, released in December 2008, was created in New York. However, I prefer his later albums like Chinawut Indracusin (2008) and Chin Chinawut ‘I believe’ (2011). I think the following song is from the 2008 album. This is one of my favourite songs and I find one of the most beautiful love songs ever

Nevertheless, there are numerous Chin songs of this kind that I really love. Here another beautiful song that is more recent.

You see, I’m really into these kind of ballads. Here is a jazzy song that I truly cherish However, Chin also sings more rocking and catchy songs like ‘My bad habit’. By the way, actress Yaya Urassaya was in the music video to this song.

Apart from singing, Chin has also done some acting, for example he starred in a Taiwanese drama called ‘Love 18’. In addition, he is also familiar with Khon dance which is the Thai masked drama telling the story of Rama. This story is based on the Ramakien which is the Thai version of the Ramayana. Chin as Khon character Tosakanth (photo credit: pinterest.com)

For instance, at the World Expo 2010 he also performed as a Khon dancer. He played the character Tosakanth who is the enemy of Phra Ram (Rama). In the following clip, he is getting prepared for the performance. By the way, it is an amazing fact to note that the dancers are actually sown into the costumes. You can also see this in the video of myKhon article where young dancers prepare for their show

Well, I think Chin Chinawut cuts quite a figure as a Thai pop singer but also as a classical Thai dancer. It’s amazing and as you might have noticed I like his ballads the most Chin Up*

Do you know Chin and do you like his music? I think he encourages us to always keep our chins up

‘Buddha Bless’ Thai Hip Hop Band: Music with a Message

As you may know from my post about Joey Boy, the King of Thai Rapper, I’m really obsessed with Thai Hence, I’d like to present you my favourite band in this genre: it’s Buddha Bless! Buddha Bless*

The band has three members who each adopted one of the three colours of . Thus, “Gaotong” (Suranan Chumtharathon) takes the colour green, “Gui Oui” (Natee Ekwijit) is often seen wearing yellow and “Goh-M” (Kittiphong Khamsat) adopts the colour red. The guys are charismatic and spread a positive message with their music.

Thai Hip Hop band* The Story of Buddha Bless

The band was founded in 2006 and promoted by Joey Boy’s record label branch Gancore Club. Buddha Bless’ music is however not only about Hip Hop but also about Dancehall Reggae and other Carribean music styles. Nevertheless, Hip Hop can be regarded as the base of their music. Their first solo album is called ‘Fai Kiao, Fai Daeng’ which means ‘Green light, red light’. A very popular song from this album is ‘Fire’ which can be seen as an excellent combination of Thai and Carribean music.

However, the special feature of their music is that they try to incorporate Thai elements into their music, thus providing it with a unique flavour and style. A very prominent example of Buddha Bless mixing Thai elements into their songs is ‘Puk Tah Krai’ (the Fun). Here is the very amusing video to this song. The quality of the clip is not so good but I could not find a better version

Even though producing solo albums, the band is still active in the Gancore Club. Although the guys from Buddha Bless might appear obscure and a bit weird at first sight, they are in fact very amiable and the lyrics of their songs spread positive messages in accordance with Buddhist thinking. Hence, they were even awarded for their lyrics by Thailand’s Buddhist Council Buddha Bless in Concert*

My most favourite Buddha Bless song of all times is called ‘Ngot Sao Kao Pun Sah’ (Lessen the Sadness Before Lent) which is about turning to religion (Buddhism) in order to deal with depression.

Their messages are also against drug abuse and alcoholism. Thus, the band puts forward that you’re more attractive when you’re sober and promote drinking milk rather than alcohol. That’s what their song ‘Nom’ (‘Milk’) is about. This is by the way also a very suitable song for Songkran, the Thai New Year Festival

Pretty decent and genuine chaps, aren’t they? I think Buddha Bless is truly special because their music has a moral and Buddhist message. Thus, their music is interesting and appealing to both younger and older generations.

Yours, Sirinya

(A comprehensive source on this topic isArtist Spotlight: Buddha Bless) Krissada ‘Noi’ Sukosol Clapp: Thai-American Singer, Actor & Hotelier

‘Thai celebrities known for making a mark in both the music and hospitality industries’ (Financial Times about the Sukosol family)

Krissada Sukosol Clapp, born in 1970, is also known as ‘Noi Pru’ or Krissada Terence. He is the youngest child in the Sukosol dynasty’s third generation. His mother is the famous Thai business lady Kamala Sukosol who is the heiress of the Siam City Hotels and Resorts chain. Apart from being an entrepreneur, Kamala Sukosol is also a Jazz singer and entertainer. Noi’s father Terence H. Clapp is American and also worked in the family business.

Krissada ‘Noi’ Sukosol

Krissada Sukosol (photo credit: nationmultimedia.com)

Hence, being ‘luk kreung’ (half-Thai) Noi grew up in an international surrounding and he is just as multi-talented as his family’s business dynasty. He has worked as Creative Director of the Sukosol family hotel business thus overseeing the design and concept development for all Siam hotels. At Boston University, Noi also took a major in anthropology and a minor in theatre arts. Thus, Krissada is very much interested in culture, arts and he loves antiques. He is said to have more than 2000 antique collector pieces. Thus, the Siam provides the perfect setting for his collection. In addition, he also tries to incorporates unique Thai characteristics into his family’s individualised hotels.

In 2003, Noi married Melanie Giles who is responsible for the Public Relations Departments at The Siam. In the following clip, they talk about their work for the Siam and Noi compares the quality of the hotel to ‘a good song which has soul, is intangible and lasts forever’.

In point of fact, Noi is very multi-faceted and has worked in many different areas. Hence, he is also known as a popular Thai singer of genres like Indie, Pop and Thai Pop. He is the founder of the band ‘Pru’ which was formed in 2001. His elder brother Kamol ‘Sukie’ is also a member in this band where he acts as a guitarist-producer. Krissada was the lead vocalist of Pru and the band won MTV Asia’s award for Favourite Thai Artist in 2002.

As you might remember, the band Pru also participated in the modern rock version of the Thai Ramakien. It is called ‘Ramakien: A Rak Opera’ (2006). Thai rapper and producer Joey Boy was also among the Thai pop music artist However, let us enjoy some more of Pru’s music:

Nonetheless, after managing some obstacles, Noi has also become achnowledged as an actor too. His greatest success was starring the character ‘Jod’ in the 1950s style Thai Gangster movie ‘Antapal’ (2012). What is more, we also know him from comedy movies like ‘The Holy Man 3’ (2010) in which he has the leading role playing the former rock star Noi Wongpru who becomes a monk.

In addition, he has also become recognized as an actor starring in films like The Adventure of Iron Pussy (2003) which is a tribute but also a parody of 1970s Thai action and musical films. Noi also had the leading role in Bangkok Loco (2004) which is a musical comedy.

Noi in 13 Beloved (photo credit: moviepilot.com)

In 2006, he was awarded ‘Best Actor’ at the Thailand National Film Association Awards, the Starpics Awards and the Bangkok Crictics Assembly for his impressive and outstanding performance in the movie “13 Beloved” which can be described as an action horror comedy. In fact, there was an American remake of this movie in 2014 titled ’13 Sins’. Well, I find it’s a kind of ‘badass’ story and not really my kind of movie.

However, a versatile man, we may say Krissada Sukosol has many talents and he is the singer and actor of the Sukosol dynasty apart from being a devoted art collector. I admire and love him most for his young and clear voice.

Have you met the Sukosol Family yet?

Yours, Sirinya
