National Grid ESO Black Start from DSR The Black Start from Distributed Energy Resources (DER) project is a partnership between National Grid Electricity System Operator (ESO), SP Energy Networks (SPEN) and TNEI (a specialist energy consultancy) that has been awarded £10.3 million of Network Innovation Competition (NIC) funding.

The project is exploring how DER can be used to restore power in the highly unlikely event of a total or partial shutdown of the National Electricity Transmission System. The enormous growth in DER presents an opportunity to develop a radically different approach to Black Start. However, there are significant technical, organisational and commercial challenges to address.

Commercial Solutions for Network Development The ESO is introducing new markets to enable commercial and distribution based solutions to compete with Transmission Assets to address future transmission network needs. We’re currently running pathfinding projects exploring how to seek and compare different solution types to address a range of network needs, including voltage, stability and thermal issues. We launched our first RFI for future voltage support in March and expect to run our first tender later this year. Come along to hear more about the pathfinding projects, how to get involved and to give us your feedback to help us to help you to participate in these new markets.

Flexitricity Flexitricity created and now operates the first, largest and most advanced demand-response portfolio in GB. We bring revenue to British businesses, increase asset reliability, reduce national CO2 emissions and help to secure energy supplies. Flexitricity firsts include aggregated STOR and FCDM; Footroom and demand turn-up; post-fault despatch for distribution networks; and demand-side smart frequency control (SFC).

In the ten years since we started live demand response operations from our Edinburgh control room, the energy market has changed radically. That’s why we’re now going head to head with large power stations and Big Six energy companies and becoming a supplier. This will unlock more value for our customers and all bill-payers across the country, and will make our electricity system more flexible and efficient. Our energy supply contract is the first opportunity for electricity customers and small generator owners to optimise their flexibility on the day, by trading in the Balancing Mechanism (BM). For energy users, this is a major new revenue source.
