The big 0021 WTVP 47 IL Peoria (through WRBU-DT) surprise was CKCW 2 floating under KTVI; the CTV 140/225 promos and local ads clinched it for me. On 1800 CKCW 2 NB Moncton (through KTVI) September 17, I purchased a Digital Stream 1390/2237 HD3150 digital TV receiver. I had originally intended to purchase the receiver to monitor local August 2, 2005 (trop) DTV signals. Most of the locals have just one virtual channel; only KSDK-DT 35 (remapped to 5) and 0105 WTLJ 54 MI Muskegon 375/604 KETC-DT 39 (remapped to 9) have more than one 0110 South Bend 16, 22, 34, 46 (through WRBU) virtual channel. KSDK-DT has two virtual channels; 300/491 one for the main program (5-1), the other for NBC 0111 WOTV 41 MI Battle Creek 365/587 Weather Plus (5-2). KETC-DT has four virtual channels; 9-1 is PBS HD, 9-2 is PBS Kids, 9-3 is a September 19, 2005 (trop) simulcast of the analog signal, and 9-4 is PBS You. The weakest local DTV signal is KNLC-DT 14, 2152 WICS-DT 42 IL Springfield 80/128 given the fact their transmitter site is further south 2205 WSIU-DT 40 IL Carbondale 100/161 than the other St. Louis DTV stations. I was pleasantly surprised with the DX performance of September 20, 2005 (trop) the receiver; the first DX signals noted were close- in WICS-DT 42 and WSIU-DT 40. Within 24 hours, 1335 Columbia, MO 8, 17 105/169 I also pulled in KRCG-DT 12, KOZK-DT 23 and 1339 KRCG-DT 12 MO Jefferson City 100/161 KYTV-DT 44. KMBC-DT 7 was a pleasant surprise 1346 KCPT 19 MO Kansas City 225/362 on September 22, the same with WSJV-DT 58 on 1347 KCWE 29 MO Kansas City 225/362 October 1. When a distant signal is tuned in on the 1350 KSMO 62 MO Kansas City 225/362 HD3150, the first virtual channel is usually 1520 KSFX 27 MO Springfield 190/306 received. For example, the first virtual channel of 1521 KOZK 21 MO Springfield 190/306 WSIU-DT 40 is a simulcast of the analog signal, 1523 KOZK-DT 23 MO Springfield 190/306 while the first virtual channel of KMOS-DT 15 is 1524 KYTV-DT 44 MO Springfield 190/306 PBS HD. Of course, I logged a pair of new analog 1550 KOLR 10 MO Springfield 190/306 signals from Little Rock on September 30. 73 and good DX from Eric (NØUIH) September 22, 2005 (trop) Frank Merrill 0910 KMBC-DT 7 MO Kansas City 225/362 PO Box 669, Macomb IL 61455 0912 KRCG-DT 12 MO Jefferson City 100/161 309-833-2661 [email protected] 0912 KCPT 19 MO Kansas City 225/362 Relogs note date only, not time.

OK, so guess what I acquired on Sep. 8? Thanks to Steve in Indianapolis for sending out the e-mail alert about the Radio Shack sale on the HDTV converter ($89.98), which instantly gives me 15 new TV logs. I’ll guess that smarter people than me will do some side-by- side comparisons of this unit. A nice feature is a signal strength meter, but the remapping is a bit confusing and the remote is a bit balky. ______

That’s all for this month. If you’ve seen any good DX lately, please take a moment to report! 73s Matt.

WJZV 93.1 was the big surprise in the E-skip opening on July 28; this was mainly a low-band VHF TV opening. IBOC sidebands is not as big of a problem in St. Louis on FM as it is in the New York area, with only five FMs (three Clear Channel and two Bonneville FM properties) broadcasting in the unproven and spectrally inefficient format. KWMU 90.7 put on their IBOC on September 26; it was gone within 48 hours. The trop opening of September 30-October 1 was a pleasant surprise; I managed to pull in four new Arkansas stations, even KBCN 104.3 next to local WRDA 104.1. Speaking of WRDA, Emmis Communications has sold this to Radio One, and flipped the station to an Urban Contemporary format as “Hot 104.1”, leaving St. Louis without an Adult Standards format. KESY 107.3 Cuba, MO is now on the air with a country format; it is Crawford County’s second commercial FM; the other one is KNSX 93.3 in Steelville (although their transmitter is in Franklin County). 73, Eric (NØUIH) Fred Laun - K3ZO - 5801 Huntland Road - Temple Hills, MD 20748 - [email protected]

Thanks to Tim in Penfield for announcing the great conditions, and for helping pin some of these down as it was happening.

Sadly, no hint of needed New Hampshire on 103.7 or 94.9. Bob-FM in Brockville and Ithaca NY killed 103.7 in that direction. 94.9 was too difficult with Oshawa and Frankfurt NY. No sign of Vermont on 96.9 or 92.9 due to Buffalo.

NOTES FROM THE ABOVE; 1. I happen to know the guy who *owns* this station. I called him up a couple days later and told him "I want to play a tape over the phone, and tell me if you recognize it." He did! 2. My first taste of "IBOC Hell." Stations from this region were stronger than closer stuff in the same direction (e.g. 105.5 St. Joseph over Moberly, 105.1 as strong as Quincy, 94.5 Topeka occasionally over KRXL). IBOC hash from 98.9 "ate" 98.7 (KMGO same direction) and 99.1; 98.1 "ate" 98.3 and 97.9; 96.5 put hash in KLBA 96.7; 93.1 might have had 93.3 hash but not sure; 104.9 destroyed by 105.1 hash; 106.5's hash briefly ate semi- local WPWQ. Interestingly, on 7/31 I was in Kansas City and I couldn't detect IBOC on the car radio at all. Apparently the hash on the adjacents is reduced by more dB than the poor adjacent-channel selectivity can detect. 3. faded up briefly to "...than any other station in the Tri-State area, all the hits..." A phone call to them confirmed that this was their own promo, made in-house, they recognized it! 4. another fade up: "...and on KUUZ, 95.9 FM, Lake Village AR..." I had been hearing religious teaching occasionally getting by dominating KJMO and WJBD. I couldn't find a human being at KDJR, so I called KUUZ and asked if they had an affiliate on 100.1 in their legal ID's - they said, yes, KDJR. SWEET!!! This had been my #2 or #1 most-wanted FM for plenty of years (became #1 when I finally bagged WCCW 107.5 several years ago). These two had to make it through torrential rains St. Louis and south (hurricane leftovers). I think WKAI may have been off to install their CP for more ERP? If so, this was just dumb luck, as I never listen to them...I noticed (I think) a somewhat stronger signal later once they had come back on. 5. Does anybody know if they also moved their tower when "moving in" from Kankakee? If the tower didn't also move, this won't be a new station for me.

E-skip was less than impressive this season, but there were a few decent openings to up the log totals. Similarly there were a few tropo openings, which thanks to the APS-9B, resulted in a lot of new catches, including some on local frequencies. The highlight for me was finally hearing Canada by tropo, with 97.9 Brandon. It came in briefly under Sioux City, long enough to hear a few cities and Celsius temperature, then faded out after being in maybe 15-20 seconds. I listened next hour to the CBC Radio 1 feed from Winnipeg on the internet and heard exactly the same forecast with cities in the same order, starting with Winnipeg and working west. Manitoba is a new province for my log as well. My log total has jumped to 1226, more than I’ve ever logged at any other QTH, surpassing my Tallahassee, FL total from the early 1990s.

Boy, you can sure tell that the Sporadic E Season is over, can’t you?! September in Memphis has been uneventful, to say the least. Sure, there have been a couple of routine Sporadic-E openings on 6m, and a few interesting tropo contacts on 2m – including QSOs into KS, WI, and PA – but, there was nothing much to write home about. Since we have a clear break in the action, I thought it might be a good time to discuss what some call “the final courtesy of a contact,” the QSL. I really enjoy collecting cards. There is something fundamental and tactile about being able to hold in one’s hand a hard remembrance of an interesting contact. Still, many hams, especially those who have spent several years on H.F., no longer collect cards. But, those of us who frequent the VHF bands do almost universally. There are many awards and recognitions available for “confirming” contacts in various numbers of grids. Further, on 6m, working and confirming all states can bring a nice award that, since it is no easy task, is often pursued. Some even have worked all states on 2m with the help of bouncing from the moon! If you spend any time on the VHF bands, it is important to keep some cards on hand. There are, obviously, stylistic differences among cards, but despite these differences, all cards should contain some basic information:

The call of both stations, The date of the contact, The band or frequency of the contact, The exact time of the contact (preferably in Universal Time), The mode (e.g., SSB, FM, CW, etc.), and A signal report.

Beyond that, the sky is the limit. Many hams include awards they have won, memberships they hold, or even the occasional religious message. Oh, and please include your grid square! QSL cards can be as varied as the hams who send them. Some cards are simple and straight forward, with little more than the required information. They are “plain vanilla.”

41

But, when you need a grid, a country, or a state, vanilla is a great flavor! Other cards are humorous, or artistic, or just plain fun to look at. Cards get particularly interesting when the operator has a flair for art or photography.

The fancier the card, the more expensive they can be. QSLs are often purchased in lots of a thousand or more. Bought in this bulk, full-color, two-sided cards like the one above can cost twelve to fifteen cents a card, often double what the more basic, single-color cards might cost. Fortunately, for operators on a budget, or those who aren’t active enough to justify a run of 1000 cards, there are options. There are a few programs available to make cards at home, one-by-one. Perhaps most popular is QSL Maker, downloadable at http://hfradio.org/wb8rcr/. The program makes a very serviceable card. The only downside is the cards all tend to look the same.

Of course, those who are even remotely computer savvy can make a very nice, custom-looking card anytime they might want, one-by-one. As with the high-priced slick cards, there is virtually no limit to what once can put on them. Here’s one I quickly knocked out after returning from the Caribbean.

42 The most important thing to remember about QSLs when you’re operating the VHF bands is to have some. VHF hams are almost always chasing something, so expect to receive some unsolicited cards on a regular basis. While the card may not be important to you – gosh, how many cards do I have from FN20, around Philadelphia? – it is likely important to be to the guy requesting yours.

Not much this month. Finally finished computerizing my 6m log. Since November, 199, I have contacted 1553 stations in 480 grid squares. I have confirmed 448 squares in 81 countries.

44 GET ALL THE CHANNELS- ERECT A FRINGE-AREA ANTENNA Tired of poor TV reception and stopped by the new antenna’s price? Do it yourself. It’s not easy, but think of those bright new pictures From POPULAR MECHANICS, MAY 1965 submitted by Gary Hickerson

TIRED OF SNOWDRIFTS obscuring your TV pictures? Annoyed with ghosts chasing each other across the screen? Suffering with weak and pale hard-to-watch viewing? Chances are you need a new roof antenna to put an end to these problems and bring back those stations you haven’t been able to enjoy lately. If you’re more than 50 miles from the nearest TV transmitter, a simple antenna just won’t do. For good reception you need a really sensitive highly-directive antenna mounted on a tall mast. We tackled this problem recently at a summer home in Southampton, Long Island, about 100 miles from New York City in a relatively difficult reception area. Our solution was to erect a high-gain super directional antenna atop a 20-foot mast attached to a sloping roof some 32 feet above the ground. This gave us an actual antenna height of more than 50 feet. First steps called for selecting an antenna and mounting hardware. We chose a Channel- Master Crossfire for the antenna and a combination of mounting hardware that included a two- section 20-foot mast, tripod mount and base mount, ground rod, standoff insulators, lightning arrester, turnbuckles, guy wire, ground wire and lead-in wire. Our choice of mounting hardware was predicated by the location. Normally either the tripod mount or the base mount would be used to hold the mast in place. But because of the possibility of high winds we used both. A hurricane which hit just a few months later proved us right. Our installation held while many others in the area tumbled before the high winds. We took as many basic steps as possible while still on the ground. The sloped roof would have made opening the antenna and hooking up guy wires rather difficult. If a flat roof had been the work area, all this would have been done on the roof. First we laid out all the parts, cut guy wires to size and tied one end of each guy wire to the appropriate ring on the antenna mast. Next we folded the antenna open and attached it to the mast. Then lead-in wire was connected to the antenna terminals and run through the standoffs we mounted on the mast. Next it was time to climb the extension ladder to the roof to make our basic preparations there. We picked a site atop the roof peak and selected positions for the antenna mounts and guy wire tiedowns. The trick here is to make sure that the mounting screws go into something solid so they won’t pull loose later. This means you have to locate the roof rafters. Also, once you make a hole in that roof you must seal it up after the screw or whatever has been put into place. If you don’t, you’ll be looking at water stains on your ceilings after the first good rain. The easy way to do this is with a tube of silicone rubber. Just make sure you use enough to completely surround every screw or eye. Once the antenna mounting brackets were fastened in place with lag screws, it was time to haul the antenna up on the roof. When handling an assembled antenna you can’t be too careful. It’s clumsy and slow work. Two men can make quick work of the job, however, if one guides the antenna around obstructions with a line tied to the mast and handled from the ground while another man pulls the antenna up. When working with rooftop antennas, watch out for nearby electric cables. More than one antenna installer has been fatally injured when the antenna contacted a nearby live line. With the antenna on the roof we extended the mast to its full length. Then we tied down one guy wire from the top mast section. Pick the side that faces into the prevailing wind. This will hold the antenna in place while you get to the other guys, and tie the antenna down properly. We used guy wires at two levels on the mast. There are three guys at each level separated by 120 UNFOLDING THE ANTENNA is a fast and degrees. This gives uniform support. Always set one guy reasonably easy task. Make sure all antenna to face into the prevailing winds—the direction the wind elements are firmly locked open and straight. most commonly comes from—to provide maximum If possible, do this on the roof. support. In an area subject to extremes of wind, snow and ice you may need six guys at each level. Now we were ready to raise the antenna and insert it into the tripod mount. This again was a two-man job to keep the antenna from falling. With the mast in the mount, we then tied down the remaining guy wires. Using the turnbuckles, all the lines were tightened evenly. You can check this by watching the mast. It should remain straight and vertical.

45 Once the antenna was in place we attached the remaining standoff to the mast and ran the lead-in wire through it. Then came the lightning arrester which is fastened to the mast by its mounting strap. The lead-in runs through it too. Should lightning strike the antenna, the arrester will prevent the bolt of electricity from following the lead-in down to your set and possibly doing extensive damage. The arrester grounds to the mast, so we used our length of ground wire to connect the mast to a 10-foot copper ground post. Some readers may question our use of flat ribbon-type lead-in. But as we were in a quiet, relatively noise-free (electrical noise) area it was possible. All that was left was to run the lead-in down the side of the house to the set and hook it up to the antenna terminals. Then final alignment adjustments were made by turning the antenna for the best pictures on all channels. A handy way to simplify this procedure is to use a portable TV in the yard START MOUNTING BOLTS with a hammer. where you can see it while rotating the antenna. If you’ve got Be sure they are going into the rafters for a a battery-powered TV, it can go right up on the roof with you. firm solid grip. Cover with silicone rubber If you can't bring the TV out of the house, a “people chain” or or tar to prevent leaks. CB radio can be used to relay instructions to the person rotating the mast. In extreme fringe areas there are several accessories that can be added to the installation to make good reception possible. For example, in many areas you will want to receive TV programs that are originating from different cities located in different directions from your antenna site. An antenna rotator is the best bet here. In some locations you may be too far from the TV station to get anything but snowy reception no matter what antenna you use. For greater sensitivity and less snow you can add a booster that will amplify the signal being received by your antenna to improve the picture. Remember, no two antenna installations are exactly the same, but the general rules we have spelled out and the installation described here are typical and can be used as a guide for most installations. * * *
