Feast of the Holy Face of Novena: Jesus, covered in blood and much sadness, said to Mother Pierina: "See how much I suffer. I am understood by so few. What ingratitude on the part of those who say that they love Me! I have given My heart as a sensible object of My great love for man, and I give My Face as a sensible object of My sorrow for the sins of man. I desire that it be honored by a special feast on Shrove Tuesday. The feast will be preceded by a novena, during which the faithful make reparation with Me, uniting themselves with My sorrow." This year, the feast is on Tuesday, March 5th so the nine-day Alpha Omega novena begins on Sunday, February 24th. For the novena, please visit carmeloftheholyface.com/holy-face-of-jesus-novena.

SIXTH S UNDAY IN O RDINARY T IME F EBRUARY 17, 2019 Stewardship Reflection: Today’s readings speak of an essential quality for the Christian steward - hope. According to the Catechism of the , "Hope is the theological virtue by which we desire the kingdom of heaven and eternal life as our happiness, placing our trust in Christ’s promises and relying not on our own strength but on the help of the grace of the Holy Spirit (CCC 1817)." In many ways this is the very definition of a stewardship way of life - focusing on eternity as we live our daily lives and relying on God to provide for our needs and satisfy our deepest longings for meaning and happiness right now. In today’s Gospel from Luke, Jesus describes the true richness of life that is possible for those of us who are willing to live as his hope-filled disciples. We are all familiar with this passage in which Jesus reveals the Beatitudes: blessed are the poor; they have the kingdom of God. Blessed are those now hungry because they will be satisfied. Blessed are those who weep because they will laugh. Blessed are those who are hated, excluded and insulted because they are disciples of Jesus; they will be greatly rewarded in heaven.

Safety, Security and Access: The new entrance and elevator are now fully functional, so you may park in the Asylum avenue lot and enter the Cathedral through the west entrance. This makes access to the Cathedral much easier. So that everyone who comes to the Cathedral may pray and worship in peace, we each need to do our part. Obviously we abide by the norm, “If you see something, say something!” As a parish located in the city and with our doors (literally) open to all, extra vigilance is needed. Should you be approached by someone asking for money, please tell one of the priests, one of the two security guards, Peter our Sacristan or one of the ushers or other liturgical ministers. We have procedures in place for assisting those in need or those who might just be “panhandling.” It normally is not a good idea to give cash and please do not agree to give anyone you do not know a ride in your car. Also parents are asked NOT to allow children to go the bathrooms by themselves. They must be accompanied by an adult. Now with the new and much-needed addition, containing an elevator and restrooms, it will be more difficult to know who is actually in the Cathedral at a given moment. Do not leave items unattended in the pews when you go forward to receive Holy Communion. Mass Honoring of Blessed Clelia Merloni: On February 9th, The Cathedral Schola Cantorum was the invited choir at a Mass commemorating the November 2018 beatification of Blessed Clelia Merloni, Foundress of the Congregation of the Apostles of the , at ’s Cathedral in New York. The Mass was celebrated by His Eminence, Timothy Cardinal Dolan who recalled his own childhood education in St. Louis under the sisters’ guidance. In his homily, Cardinal Dolan spoke of Blessed Clelia’s “profound awareness of God’s love for her” despite the challenges and hardships she faced in her lifetime and of the order’s “charism of love, service and reparation.” He concluded his homily with her words: “Trust God and miracles can happen.” The hymns sung by the Schola Cantorum, under the direction of Ms. Meredith Neumann, with Dr. Ezequiel Menendez acting as organist, included “O God, Beyond All Praising” and “Lift High the Cross,” and at Communion, “Adoro Te Devote” and “Anima Christi.” A video of the entire Mass, with our magnificent Cathedral choir prominently featured, can be viewed at Saint Patrick Cathedral’s website, saintpatrickscathedral.org/most-recent-mass.
