In addition to the announcements on select radio and television stations, parents will also be notified by telephone via School Messenger (previously known as School Reach) in the event of school closing or early dismissal. School Messenger messages will come from the district level. Please let the school office know if you have changed phone numbers recently so we may make those updates in our system.

Listen dear teachers and you shall hear, A verse from your school nurse now that Christmas is near

Belly aches, headaches, popped wires in braces, Hangnails, chapped lips, and pimples on faces.

Viruses causing GI distress. Tears and upsets cause “My life is a mess!”

Kids with green faces approaching my door, Barely over the threshold… All over the floor.

Tonsils that kiss their throats are so sore. Glands as big as grapes… Need I say more?

Earaches and heart aches, jammed thumb or finger,

Wheezes and sneezes and coughs that do linger.

Allergic reactions, occasional lice, Contusions and bruises from falls on the ice.

My Mom knows I’m sick, I’ve never felt worse, She said, go to school anyway, and go see the nurse.

“I threw up on the bus, I felt like a jerk, But you can’t call my Mom, cuz she’s gotta work.”

I love being your school nurse, and I love all this stuff, But by Christmas vacation, even I’ve had enough.

Enjoy your break, wipe the virus slate clear, And we’ll all start anew when we come back next year!

My first job was in a library. To be more precise, it was my first job not on my family’s farm.

I was the lone employee of the Sherwood Memorial Library on Main Street Doland. I was 14. Back then, we had no computer - just a squat wooden card catalog with narrow drawers that closed with a satisfying click.

They say the places important to us when we are young leave a deeper imprint than the places we encounter later in life. That little library is one of mine. I can conjure it up as easily as breathing. The smell: vanilla with notes of smoky amber – the result of a bit of alchemy created when paper and glue decay together. The glossy sheen of a carefully chosen picture book clasped in a small hand going out into the world. The smack of the date stamp kissing the next line of a card.

It was in that small, brick building that I met the Witch of Blackbird Pond and Rebecca and came to know with certainty that whatever I did with my life would include words and books. I continued to work in libraries throughout college while pursuing degrees heavily laden with the literary arts including a Master’s Degree in rhetoric. I’ve worked as a writer and editor and volunteered for the South Dakota Festival of Books and, more recently, the Sturgis Big Read. I continue to work as a freelance writer.

I began this position with the new school year. My days are a rotation between the elementary schools in Sturgis, Piedmont, and Whitewood. Younger students have been introduced to a string of new books and are learning the basics of libraries and how they serve our schools and communities.

Thanks to new technology, those in upper elementary classes have been introduced to authors and illustrators through online interviews discussing the artistic process, the book industry, and where ideas come from. My goal is to make these professionals accessible to students and their work tangible examples of dedication, practice, and success. We’re also exploring new ways to access stories, most recently with an introduction to podcasts.

One of our first lessons explained that each book has essentially its own address, its own place among the stacks. I’m sincerely honored to have a space among the stacks too. I hope I can play some small role in helping the children of our district love the written word as much as I do.

During our September Box Top collection we collected 5,912 Box Tops! Way to go SES!! Keep clipping and turn in all Box Tops by December 4th. If we reach our half way goal of 7,500 Box tops the Staff and Students will be rewarded with a PJ/jeans day on December 18th!

Our next Meeting will be Jan 3rd at 3:30pm in the Library! See you then!

5 SES Student Council News

The SES Student Council would like to thank all of the students, staff and their families for supporting the SES Food Drive. Over a three-day period, nonperishable food products as well as paper products were donated to help support the local Sturgis Kiwanis Food Pantry. During the drive SES collected 1004 pounds of food products that will provide for families in our community during this holiday season.

6 Girls on the Run concluded their second season with a 5K on Saturday, November 18th with the Spearfish Girls on the Run team. Girls on the Run is a national non-profit organization that uses a researched curriculum of lessons, games, activities, and non-competitive running exercises to teach life lessons and to enhance self-esteem and build confidence in young girls. The 10 week Girls on the Run program delivers its message to girls in grades 3-5 through volunteer coaches and mentors. If you are interested in volunteering to help out next Fall, please contact Kristi Ortiz at Sturgis Elementary.

Lunch Room News

Sturgis Elementary Child Nutrition Team is excited to announce the new Salad/Sandwich Deli Bar! The response from the kids & teachers have been awesome! Students have a choice of a chef salad or sandwich which we make to order as they come thru the line. In their chef salads they get 1 cup of lettuce with the option of adding spinach, their choice of diced ham or chicken, choice of vegetables which may include baby carrots, broccoli, cauliflower, tomatoes, cucumbers to name a few, shredded cheese, diced egg, dark red kidney beans and homemade ranch dressing. The chef salad also includes a bread which may include a T-roll, bread stick or garlic toast. With the sandwich they get their choice of ham or turkey with cheese. They may choose a small ½ cup tossed salad with all of the same vegetable choices. Both meals include a fruit and a half pint of milk.

Parents are always welcomed to join their children for lunch.

8 VETERANS DAY

With streamers and decorations lining the hallways, Sturgis Elementary staff and students showed great support and patriotism to honor our veterans, past and present. Sergeant Nick Mayer kicked off with an assembly following the flag ceremony presented by Sturgis Honor Guard. Thank you to all our visitors that shared in the celebration!
