Heidi Komes R.N. Jennifer Oedekoven R.N. Jamie Hatch The School Nurse’s Christmas Card Listen dear teachers and you shall hear, A verse from your school nurse now that Christmas is near Belly aches, headaches, popped wires in braces, Hangnails, chapped lips, and pimples on faces. Viruses causing GI distress. Tears and upsets cause “My life is a mess!” Kids with green faces approaching my door, Barely over the threshold… All over the floor. Tonsils that kiss their throats are so sore. Glands as big as grapes… Need I say more? Earaches and heart aches, jammed thumb or finger, Wheezes and sneezes and coughs that do linger. Allergic reactions, occasional lice, Contusions and bruises from falls on the ice. My Mom knows I’m sick, I’ve never felt worse, She said, go to school anyway, and go see the nurse. “I threw up on the bus, I felt like a jerk, But you can’t call my Mom, cuz she’s gotta work.” I love being your school nurse, and I love all this stuff, But by Christmas vacation, even I’ve had enough. Enjoy your break, wipe the virus slate clear, And we’ll all start anew when we come back next year! Merry Christmas! The school nurse 3 My first job was in a library. To be more precise, it was my first job not on my family’s farm. I was the lone employee of the Sherwood Memorial Library on Main Street Doland. I was 14. Back then, we had no computer - just a squat wooden card catalog with narrow drawers that closed with a satisfying click. They say the places important to us when we are young leave a deeper imprint than the places we encounter later in life. That little library is one of mine. I can conjure it up as easily as breathing. The smell: vanilla with notes of smoky amber – the result of a bit of alchemy created when paper and glue decay together. The glossy sheen of a carefully chosen picture book clasped in a small hand going out into the world. The smack of the date stamp kissing the next line of a card. It was in that small, brick building that I met the Witch of Blackbird Pond and Rebecca and came to know with certainty that whatever I did with my life would include words and books. I continued to work in libraries throughout college while pursuing degrees heavily laden with the literary arts including a Master’s Degree in rhetoric. I’ve worked as a writer and editor and volunteered for the South Dakota Festival of Books and, more recently, the Sturgis Big Read. I continue to work as a freelance writer. I began this position with the new school year. My days are a rotation between the elementary schools in Sturgis, Piedmont, and Whitewood. Younger students have been introduced to a string of new books and are learning the basics of libraries and how they serve our schools and communities. Thanks to new technology, those in upper elementary classes have been introduced to authors and illustrators through online interviews discussing the artistic process, the book industry, and where ideas come from. My goal is to make these professionals accessible to students and their work tangible examples of dedication, practice, and success. We’re also exploring new ways to access stories, most recently with an introduction to podcasts. One of our first lessons explained that each book has essentially its own address, its own place among the stacks. I’m sincerely honored to have a space among the stacks too. I hope I can play some small role in helping the children of our district love the written word as much as I do. Have a wonderful holiday season. Heidi Kruse, Elementary Librarian & Media Specialist [email protected] 4 During our September Box Top collection we collected 5,912 Box Tops! Way to go SES!! Keep clipping and turn in all Box Tops by December 4th. If we reach our half way goal of 7,500 Box tops the Staff and Students will be rewarded with a PJ/jeans day on December 18th! Our next Meeting will be Jan 3rd at 3:30pm in the Library! See you then! Helping Young Leaders Step Forward K-Kids Club will be hosting the Pet Supply Drive December 4-14th Drop off sites will include Sturgis Elementary and Sturgis Intermediate 5 SES Student Council News The SES Student Council would like to thank all of the students, staff and their families for supporting the SES Food Drive. Girls on the Run is a national non-profit organization that uses a researched curriculum of lessons, games, activities, and non-competitive running exercises to teach life lessons and to enhance self-esteem and build confidence in young girls. The 10 week Girls on the Run program delivers its message to girls in grades 3-5 through volunteer coaches and mentors. If you are interested in volunteering to help out next Fall, please contact Kristi Ortiz at Sturgis Elementary. 7 Lunch Room News Sturgis Elementary Child Nutrition Team is excited to announce the new Salad/Sandwich Deli Bar! ORIGINAL Before the FEDERAL COMMUNICATIONS COMMISSION In the Matter of 1 Request by State Broadcasters Associations ) MB Docket No. 07-137 For Declaratory Ruling Concerning the ) Application of the Commission's Political 1 Programming Regulations to Three Internet ) "Airtime Sales Programs" ) FILED/ACt;EPTED To: The Commission AUG - 8 2007 COMMENTS FmaI Commvnicams CO~~~~~~~~ OF Offireof the Seoroiq HAUGO BROADCASTING, INC HAUGO BROADCASTING INC ("HAUGO), by Counsel hereby files comments in response to the State Broadcasters Associations' request for declaratory ruling as to whether a broadcast station that participates in Internet sales programs must include the sale price of online-sold airtime in calculating a station's lowest unit charge ("LUC) for each class of time sold. For the reasons set forth herein, Haugo believes that regardless of the technology used, when advertising is sold online it is purchased at rates unavailable to even the most favored commercial advertiser who seeks to purchase time directly from the station and, therefore, is exempt from the LUC pricing requirements. In support hereof, Haugo submits the following: 1. Haugo is the licensee radio stations KSQY-FM (Deadwood, South Dakota) and KIQK-FM & KTOQ-AM (Rapid City, South Dakota). 2. Although Congress enacted the 1971 Federal Election Campaign Act to promote greater candidate access to the broadcast media at reasonable rates, for more than thirty-two years the FCC has distinguished individual station rates from group or "network" rates for LUC purposes. In 1975 the FCC held that airtime sold by third parties to target a national or regional audience for a buy on a defined group of stations is a "special rate package" essentially exempt from LUC calculations.

Check out the attendance facts from our friends at Attendance Works. • Absenteeism in the first month of school can predict poor attendance throughout the school year. Good evening, everybody, and 5 welcome to the third hearing of the Federal 6 Communications Commission's Localism Task 7 Force. 8 My name is Jonathan Adelstein, and I'm one 9 of the five Commissioners on the Federal 10 Communications Commission. Thanks to Senator 11 Daschle I'm the first one ever from South Dakota 12 to serve on the FCC in the 75-year history of 13 the agency and the first one in fact to even 14 serve from any of the states in the upper Great 15 Plains. It's great to bring the FCC back home. 16 I'm thrilled that Commissioner Mike Copps 17 came with us here to my hometown to this hearing. 18 Commissioner Copps has been a great national 19 leader in the effort to make media more 20 responsive to local concerns and in the struggle 21 against media consolidation. 22 I should explain to everyone that until last 23 week, our chairman, Chairman Powell, fully 24 planned to be here. Unfortunately, the 25 President and Congressional leaders asked him to 3 1 participate in an event back in Washington, so 2 he had to return early this morning.
