Torch Staff Writer

We all know that most forms of entertainment are scripted, but the majority of people are finally start ing to learn about the dark side of professional wrestling. While I have yet to see the film "The Wrestler" with Mickey Rourke, I am already aware of the dangers that many wrestlers have in their lifestyles. This discussion has recently been started again, due especially to the recent death of World Wrestling Entertainment's Andrew Martin, who was only 33 years of age. Many wonder if his death was caused by some kind of addiction, as reports state that prescription drugs and steroids were found in his Tampa apartment. Let us not speculate whether he overdosed or not, but the assump tions are certainly out there. Does this mean that we should see more government control on the sport? As a side note, yes, I am call ing wrestling a sport. To those who think otherwise, consider the high level of athleticism each WWE su perstar needs in order to work more than 250 days a year. But back to what is wrong with wrestling. There is a dark side to the business that people are finally learning about.. In this decade, more than twenty wrestlers passed away before the age of fifty, with deaths ranging from surgery complications to suicide and drug overdose. Things like suicide and drug abuse have been common factors in wrestling deaths for a long time. Two of the members of the famous Von Erich family committed sui cide at young ages. Chris Von Erich, 21, shot himself in the head in 1991 after his physi cal build caused frustrations in his wrestling career. World Baseball Classic finishes in a SPORTS familiar fashion, page A9 Tennis breaks in new coach BOUNCING BACK Women lose at Butler, search for league wins

The dawn of a new era took place last weekend as Traci Young was named head coach of the Valparaiso University wom en's tennis team following Jay Adams' decision to step down. Adams had occupied the role of head coach since 2007, three years after completing his play ing career at VU. Unfortunately for VU (1-10, 0-1), Saturday was a similar sto ry to most of this season as the Crusaders lost 6-1 to Butler in their opener.
