2009-06-30 10:42 CEST Yello Sparzähler online customers can view their consumption on iGoogle.

Google and Yello Strom, a wholly-owned subsidiary of EnBW Energie Baden- Württemberg AG (Germany's third-largest energy company), are giving customers an even wider view of electricity consumption. Yello, the first European company offering commercial smart meters nationwide in Germany, is cooperating with on "Google PowerMeter". Google PowerMeter is a gadget that Google users can install on their personalized iGoogle homepage. Yello has been offering the Sparzähler online since the end of 2008 as a smart electricity meter that interacts with a PC to make energy consumption visible, both in real-time and at fifteen-minute intervals, and with historical data.

Now Google and Yello are working together so that, after this summer, Sparzähler customers can also use iGoogle to get an accurate picture of their electricity consumption. "It is an additional service that our Sparzähler customers can take advantage of free of charge. Those who elect to do so can sign up at iGoogle and install the Google PowerMeter gadget soon. This offer makes the product even more valuable," explains Yello Executive Director Martin Vesper. The fifteen-minute increments are displayed in a graph on the screen of iGoogle's homepage. The main difference is, whereas the Yello Website displays all the information in an easy-to-use and understandable way, with Google PowerMeter you see your electricity consumption alongside other important information like weather and news, so it becomes part of your everyday life.

"Yello is providing information that helps its customers save energy and money," said Ed Lu, engineering lead for Google PowerMeter. "We're eager to work with them to continue to grow this program." As Yello Executive Director Martin Vesper says: "This is another step forward in the future of energy in which the customer plays the central role. Customers can use the internet to gain different perspectives on their consumption levels - today with the Sparzähler application and soon with Google PowerMeter as well. This demonstrates the strength of a customer- driven internet-based concept like the Sparzähler online, where interconnection of customers will enable them to use the World Wide Web to share information about energy that they produce themselves with other customers if they have their own photovoltaic panel or a micro-CHP system."
