The sideline, like practices, remains energized and enthused throughout with a “Hype Squad” at home games. SCHOLARSHIPS AWARDED IN DRAMATIC FASHION Head coach Will Healy and his staff awarded scholarships to two walk-ons during the 2019 preseason in dramatic fasion. The first was awarded to DB Christian Haynes. That announcement came as the 49ers attended a preseason game. It was announced over the PA system as the jumbotron caught Haynes live reaction on video. The second was presented to K Jackson VanSickle. On the last day of preseason camp, VanSickle was given an chance to earn his scholarship by making a 35-yard field goal. He split the uprights in possibly the most pressure-packed field goal of his career. COOL NOTES -- QB Chris Reynolds invited the entire offensive line to the postgame press conference following Charlotte’s 34-20 win over Middle Tennessee in which Reynolds ran for 100+ yards for the first time in his career. -- Likewise, Reynolds retweeted his C-USA Player of the Week Award following his performance vs. North Texas at his offensive linemen, receivers and with the caption: “Family! Let’s keep going.” -- The 49ers offensive line is the only one in Conference USA that earned a spot on the Joe Moore Award Midseason Honor Roll (the award is pre- sented annually to the most outstanding offensive line unit). The unit did not start the same lineup in consecutive weeks until Game 8 and has since won five straight with that same lineup. -- WR Victor Tucker has had a flair for the dramatic, this year. His 34-yard TD catch with 18 seconds left gave Charlotte a 39-38 win over North Texas. Against Marshall, he scored a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns, including the go-ahead TD early in the frame and a 25-yard catch with 48 seconds left on fourth-and-10 to seal the win. Also of note, Tucker, who has a team-high five receiving TDs, takes great pride in his blocking. -- The 49ers bookend Defensive Ends Alex Highsmith and Markees Watts are the top sack duo in Conference USA. Highsmith, the 49ers undisputed sack king leads C-USA with 14.0 sacks while Watts has 9.5, good enough for second-most in school history. CHRIS REYNOLDS, QB, R-So. Thanks to that can-do attitude and pioneering spirit, and in honor the year 1949, the school’s athletic teams were nicknamed the 49ers (adopted in 1962).

Gold Ties: While the 49ers nickname was brought about by the importance of the year 1949 and had nothing to do with the gold rush of 1849, it should be noted that the first gold discovered in America was found in the Charlotte area, less than 20 minutes from campus in 1799. Charlotte’s mascot, Norm the Niner, is a gold miner, by trade.
