by Bob Funkhouser t was a long plane ride from South Africa. Mark Turner was right out of high school, having grown up in Cradock on the eastern Cape. He had never seen a big airplane, much less been on one. With only a few dollars in his pocket the Iyoung man was going to a strange country, however, he was going with an incredible opportunity to help fulfill his dream of being a horse trainer. “I was first exposed to American Saddlebreds through my dad. He’s my biggest influence,” said Turner. “My older sister showed. My first horse was actually a jumper before I ever sat on a Saddlebred. He was a Gymkhana horse. We enjoyed horses as a family. Mom didn’t have any interest in riding but she made tail bags and things for us. We would trailer in and out and stay at the campgrounds. It was a big social outing. He heads G several successful companies and serves on numerous boards, but at 68 there’s nowhere he’d rather be than at the track watch- ing a horse train or in the foaling barn while his next potential stakes winner takes its first breath. But I married someone who loves horses more than me.” – Sally Humphrey And while the congenial Humphrey and his wife, Sally, are well known among Thoroughbred enthusiasts as breeders of the 1980 Kentucky Derby winner Genuine Risk, 1985 Belmont Stakes winner Crème Fraiche, and other champions, Watts will be the first to say ”Every horse is special.” Like most breeders, Humphrey’s end goal is to produce and race high-caliber horses, but watching his homebreds trans- form from foals to athletes is one of his biggest thrills. “We love to be there when they foal, and we love to see them develop,” he said. As a third-generation horseman, Humphrey has Thorough- breds in his blood. HUNT Wesley House, 10 Milton Park, Redfield, Bristol, BS5 9HQ Email: [email protected] ABSTRACT With particular reference to Gattyʼs British Sea-Weeds and Eliotʼs ʻRecollections of Ilfracombeʼ, this article takes an ecocritical approach to popular writings about seaweed, thus illustrating the broader perception of the natural world in mid-Victorian literature. This is a discursive exploration of the way that the enthusiasm for seaweed reveals prevailing ideas about propriety, philanthropy and natural theology during the Victorian era, incorporating social history, gender issues and natural history in an interdisciplinary manner. Although unchaperoned wandering upon remote shorelines remained a questionable activity for women, ʻseaweedingʼ made for a direct aesthetic engagement with the specificity of place in a way that conforms to Barbara Gatesʼs notion of the ʻVictorian female sublimeʼ.
