(2020). Vogler’s Archetypes Seen in the Characters of Sam Mendes’ 1917 Screenplay. Yogyakarta: Department of English Letters, Faculty of Letters, Universitas Sanata Dharma. Literature is written expression with some restrictions. According to this definition, then, screenplays are literature. Among many aspects that screenplays have in them, characters are one of the elements. Characters that recur across ages and cultures are called archetypes. In Sam Mendes’ 1917 screenplay, archetypes are represented in its characters. The thesis has three objectives. The objectives are to find out how the characters are described in the screenplay, how the characters represent Vogler’s archetypes, and how the characters’ characteristics relate to their archetypes. To find the answers of the objectives, the researcher uses character’ characterization by Petrie and Boogs, and Christopher Vogler’s archetype with new criticism. The method of research is library research. The primary data are the script of the movie and its video. The secondary data are books, journals, websites, and theses. There are two findings of the study. The first finding is the characteristics. Schofield’s characteristics are cautious and generous.

The Casting Director’s delicate work as liaison between director, actors, their agent/manager and the studio/network figures prominently in decisions which can make or break a project. It’s a job that can't garner an Oscar, but its mighty importance is always felt behind the scenes.     CORE 301: Modes of Inquiry Professor William Handley Sex, Church, and State This course will explore how and why the “natural” and the “national” come together in culture, religion, and law to regulate sex and define gender, often through heterosexual marriage. This conjoining of nature and nation through various cultural and religious assumptions has often complicated the meanings of religion and sex, and of what counts as “good” forms of either. By exploring and historicizing instances of traditional and non-traditional marital forms – heterosexual monogamy, polygamy, and gay marriage – we will at the same time explore the contingent meanings of such terms as “religion”, “nation,” “law,” and the “natural.” One of the central questions of the course is: why has marriage been considered “the cornerstone of civilization” and why have other forms as vastly different as same-sex and polygamous marriage been deemed a potentially fatal threat to civilization itself? In exploring this question, we will examine the relationships among private property, sexuality, and religion – and how they are manifest in everything from clothing to war-making. As we read and view across genres – court decisions, theory, novels, films, among them – one of the central aims of the course will be to explore how different kinds of discourse and forms of representation reveal and conceal the cultural relationships between private and public, between sexuality and law, and between marriage and nation, relationships that these discourses and representations also serve to construct, reinforce, or remake.     49th Parallel, Issue 39 (2017) Richard Andrew Voeltz ISSN: 1753-5794 How Well Has American Beauty Aged?: A Critical Review of the Suburban Film Genre RICHARD ANDREW VOELTZ, CAMERON UNIVERSITY American Beauty (1999) directed by Sam Mendes has been considered by many film scholars to be the epitome of Hollywood’s assault on suburbs as a perversion of the American dream. The film received many awards and was highly praised when it was released---winning five Academy Awards. This paper examines how American Beauty represents the culmination and caricature of a suburban trope in Hollywood that goes back to the 1940s where the supposed suburban paradise represents superficiality, conformity, and submerged sexuality. The film recounts all this as being correct, but the redemptive, happy Hollywood ending reveals that even in the sordid suburbs beauty and happiness can be found. Within the context of other suburban films, the examination of the critical and popular appeal of American Beauty, as well as its diegetic elements, demonstrates how the reality of suburbia has changed yet Hollywood seems locked into now antiquated tropes. The longevity and viability of time honored genre formulas has been called into question meaning that the suburban film genre will have to become less exclusive if it is to survive. It was other people who decided American Beauty was going to win an Academy Award. A wide array of films such as a documentary, a biographical drama, and an epic war story gave moviegoers several chances to enjoy different kinds of stories about the war. The variety in these types of films not only tells the story of this significant event in history from different perspectives, but it helps paint a more complete picture of the war and the people who fought in it.
