Ramapo Baseball - 3 20062006 BB AA SS EE BB AA LL LL SEASON OUTLOOK The Ramapo College baseball team finished their 2005 season standing at 16-19 overall, 5-11 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference. Ramapo saw much individual success from senior Joe Rivisto who earned NJAC 2nd Team Honors as the desig- nated hitter. Rivisto returns to the 2006 roster along with fellow senior Brad Szatkiewicz and junior Gary Miller, who both earned NJAC Honorable Mention honors at third base and shortstop respectively. All three hope to lead their team in 2006 to the NJAC Championship Tournament in May.

The 2006 Ramapo Baseball Team, along with Head Coach Rich Martin, look to rebound from a disappointing 2005 season. A vir- tual entire team makeover hopefully points the 2006 squad in the right direction. First base is up for grabs with newcomer Jordan Descafano, a transfer from Ocean County College, fighting it out with junior returnee Steven Santorella. The same applies at sec- ond base where transfer Joe Algeri from Felician College, will fight it out with Michael Frank, a transfer from William Paterson University. Shortstop belongs to Miller who is coming off an impressive All-NJAC selection last year. Arguably the best fielding third baseman in the NJAC, Szatkewicz, anchors the infield from the third base spot while infield backups include sophomore trans- fer Eugene Michael Gallagher III, from the University of Dayton, Eddie Suros, a transfer from Centenary College, and freshmen Skyler Conte and David Deredita. The bulk of the catching will be shared between senior transfer Michael Haggerty and senior captain Mike Jakupcionis while freshman newcomer Tim Gaven, will see some time behind the plate as well due to his excellent defensive skills. Sophomore transfer Shaun Hanrahan, from Caldwell College, will also look for some time catching this year.

Nick Sbarra, last year’s team Rookie of the Year, moves from second base to center field to take advantage of his exceptional speed and ball handling ability. The corner outfield spots will be up for grabs with Rivisto, newcomer Michael Stetsko, transfer Justin Rabinowitz from Manatee Community College, sophomore Greg Smith, and freshman Steve Libert, all looking for time in the two positions.

Coach Martin is hopeful that the pitching, a real sore spot in 2005, will improve greatly this year. Transfers include Matt Raimo from George Mason University, Rich Collyer from Rockland Community College, Javier Cruz from Globe Technical Institute, and Marcus Heredia from Liberty University. Rookie Chris Giblin, in addition to fellow rookies Joe Abruzzo, John Martone, Dan Mulligan, and John Murphy, will team up with senior captain Josh Epstein, sophomore returnees Jesse Bartley, Chris Stanisce, Ryan Hourihan, E.J. Sullivan, Florian Wouters and Joe Coppage, to round out the pitching staff in 2006.

With an emphasis on better defense and improved pitching, the outlook for the 2006 season appears to look bright!

RamapoRamapo CollegeCollege ofof NewNew JerseyJersey Ranked by U.S. News & World Report as number one among public comprehensive colleges in the north, Ramapo College of New Jersey is sometimes mistaken for a private college. This is, in part, due to its unique interdisciplinary academic structure, its size of approximately 5,600 students, and its pastoral setting in the foothills of the Ramapo Mountains on the New Jersey/New York border.

Established in 1969, Ramapo College offers bachelor’s degrees in the arts, business, humanities, social sciences and the sciences, as well as in professional studies, which include nursing and social work. In addition, Ramapo College offers courses leading to teacher certification at the elementary and secondary levels. The College also offers three graduate programs as well as joint degree programs with the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey and New York Chiropractic College.

Undergraduate students choose to concentrate their studies in one of five schools with more than 700 course offerings and 40 academic pro- grams. Ramapo College boasts an average student/faculty ratio of 17:1 and average class size of 23, affording students the opportunity to develop close ties to the College’s exceptional faculty.

The College’s mission is focused on the four “pillars” of a Ramapo education: international, intercultural, interdisciplinary and experiential, all of which are incorporated throughout the curriculum and extracurriculum. The international mission is further accomplished through an emphasis on global programs such as study abroad and faculty and student exchanges, as well as through international cooperative education. Additional experiential programs include internships, co-op, and service learning.

A campus-wide building program during recent years has resulted in the completion of the Bill Bradley Sports and Recreation Center, with its 2,200-seat arena, fitness center, climbing wall, track and dance/aerobics studio; the Overlook residence hall and the Village apartment complex. The Angelica and Russ Berrie Center for Performing and Visual Arts, completed in 1999, houses perfor ance the- aters, art galleries, and specialized spaces devoted to fine arts, computer art, photography, theater, dance and music. In addition, construction has begun on Laurel Hall, a 435-bed, suite-style residence hall scheduled for completion in 2006.

Dr. Peter Philip Mercer became the College’s fourth president on July 1, 2005. The College is governed by a Board of Trustees who are appointed by the Governor of the State. Thomas Zelante, Esq. is the chairman of the board.
