LAST MEETING (PRESEASON) Tampa Bay 14, New England 31 (8/18/11) TAMPA – Despite a hard-fought second half in which Tampa Bay outscored New England 14-3, the team was unable to overcome its slow start in the first half and fell to the visiting Patriots 31-14. New England’s offense, led by QB , challenged Tampa Bay’s young defense and scored on each of its three first-quarter possessions, while its defense took advantage of an off-rhythm night in the Tampa Bay offensive line, which kept pressure on QB Josh Freeman and impeded the Buccaneers’ effort to keep pace. Penalties also took a toll on Tampa Bay, as the team finished with 12 penalties for 95 yards, 10 calls and 85 yards of which came in the first half. The Buccaneers missed their first scoring opportunity of the night at the end of the second quarter, as K Connor Barth went wide right on a 47-yard attempt before halftime. Tampa Bay did not give in, however, and started the second half with a bang, as CB Elbert Mack intercepted QB Ryan Mallett’s deep pass attempt on the Patriots’ opening drive and returned it 69 yards for a touchdown. In New England’s ensuing possession, the Tampa Bay defense again made a big play when S Larry Asante forced a RB Stevan Ridley that was recovered by LB . Unfortunately, QB Josh Johnson was intercepted by CB to end the following Tampa Bay offensive drive. Mallett was sacked by DE George Johnson as he attempted to lead the Patriots back down the field, and S Corey Lynch and CB both had tackles that pinned New England to fourth-and-two on the Tampa Bay 26-yard line and held the visiting team to a field goal. Johnson pieced together an impressive 12-play, 84- yard drive to begin the fourth quarter, complete with deep 21 and 28-yard passes to TE and WR , respectively, and 17 of his own rushing yards. Rookie sixth-round draft pick RB Allen Bradford also contributed throughout the drive, and was responsible for the final two-yard push to punch the ball into the for the second Tampa Bay touchdown of the night. Third QB Rudy Carpenter led the Buccaneers from the Tampa Bay 15 to the New England 9 during the final minutes of the game, but his pass to WR Maurice Price fell

2 incomplete on fourth-and-five just inside the two-minute warning. New England recovered the ball and kneeled as time expired.

LAST MEETING (REGULAR SEASON) New England 35, Tampa Bay 7 (10/25/09) LONDON – Playing out of the country for the first time in team history during the regular season, Tampa Bay trailed New England by two in London as it entered the second half but was unable to cut into the lead. The Patriots grabbed an early 7-0 lead on the Buccaneers first drive of the game as S intercepted QB Josh Johnson and ran 39 yards for a touchdown. Tampa Bay entered New England territory on its next possession, but Johnson was again picked off by Meriweather to end the threat. New England increased its lead to 14-0 late in the first quarter as QB Tom Brady hit WR Wes Welker for a 14-yard touchdown. Early in the second quarter, New England threatened to increase its lead, but S picked off Brady in the end zone. However, the Buccaneers were forced to on the resulting possession and three plays later, Brady hit WR Sam Aiken on a short pass over the middle that he turned into a 54-yard catch-and-run for a score and a 21-0 lead for the Patriots. Tampa Bay got on the board just before halftime as Johnson hit WR Antonio Bryant for a 33-yard score to trim the lead to 21-7. New England went back up by three touchdowns on the first drive of the second half as Brady hit TE Ben Watson for a 35-yard touchdown for the only scoring of the third quarter. Following a 10-play, 89-yard drive early in the fourth quarter, the Patriots put the game away as RB Laurence Maroney ran in from one yard out to make the score 35-7. Following the Patriots final score, rookie QB Josh Freeman made his professional debut as he engineered the Buccaneers final two drives.

2012 SLATE The Buccaneers 2012 schedule will feature 10 games against teams that finished the 2011 season with a .500 record or better, including six games against teams that made the 2011 playoffs and one game against the Super Bowl Champion N.Y. Giants. Tampa Bay will face off against the NFC East and AFC West, as well as the St. Louis Rams (home) of the NFC West and the NFC North’s (away). The schedule is based on a formula that was implemented with realignment in 2002 that includes home and away games against the three divisional opponents, four games against teams from another division within its conference on a rotating three-year cycle, four games against teams from a division in the other conference on a rotating four-year cycle and two intraconference games based on the prior year’s standings against teams from the same conference divisions that are not scheduled to play that season.

RISING TO THE TOP The 2011 Buccaneers may have finished last in the NFC South, but their hopes of winning the division in 2012 have support. For the past nine consecutive seasons – an NFL record – at least one team has won its division the season after finishing last. More impressively, out of the 32 teams in the NFL annals to go from worst-to-first, 18 of them have done so in the past 12 years (2000-11), including an NFL-record three such clubs in 2006.

The NFC South has certainly been the gold standard when it comes to going from worst-to-first. Since realignment in 2002, the NFC South has had its last place team finish first in six-of-nine seasons, including the 2009 , one of only two teams in NFL history to go “worst-to-first” and win the Super Bowl. The Buccaneers have gone from “worst-to-first” twice since 2002, winning the division in 2005 and 2007 after finishing last the year previous.

5

Another positive sign for the 2012 Buccaneers is that of the 18 teams that have gone “worst- to-first,” seven have had a winning percentage of .250 or lower the previous season, including the 2006 Bucs, who had the same 4-12 record as the 2011 squad.

The Buccaneers can also be encouraged by the fact that for the past 16 consecutive seasons, at least five teams (out of 12) were able to make the playoffs a year after they were not in postseason play. Last season, six teams – Cincinnati, Denver, , Houston, N.Y. Giants and San Francisco – made the playoffs after missing the playoffs the season prior.

Since 1980, Schiano becomes the 23rd head coach to make the jump straight from the college level to the NFL, and just the sixth since 2003. Last season, made the jump with the from Stanford, and finished with an 13-3 record and an appearance in the NFC Championship Game. A NEW DAY For the first time since 1996 The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have a completely new coaching staff. One of the key aspects of this new coaching staff is the amount of coaching experience, both collegiately and professionally, that is being brought in.

Current Buccaneers Head Coach Greg Schiano held the same title at Rutgers from 2000-11, and was the at the University of Miami from 1999-2000 where he worked with current Buccaneers Special Assistant to the Head Coach Butch Davis. Davis was the head

7 coach at the University of Miami from 1995-2000 before leaving that position to take over as Head Coach of the Cleveland Browns from 2001-04. After his time with the Browns concluded, Davis returned to the college ranks, taking over as the head coach at the University of North Carolina from 2007-10.

Buccaneers Coach Ron Turner spent one season as the Head Coach at San Jose State in 1992, leaving for his first stint as the offensive coordinator (1993-96). He then took over as the head coach at the University of Illinois from 1997-04. After leaving Illinois, Turner returned as the offensive coordinator for the Bears, a position he held from 2005-09.

Other members of the Buccaneers staff that have held head coaching positions at the collegiate level include: Defensive Backs coach Ron Cooper (Eastern Michigan 1993-94; Louisville 1995- 97; Alabama A&M 1998-01) and Assistant Offensive Line Coach Steve Loney (Morehead State 1981-83; (Interim) Drake University 2007).

The new Bucs coaching staff is not only filled with coaches who have spent time as a head coach, but also has several coaches that have held coordinator positions, both professionally and collegiately.

Buccaneers Senior Offensive Assistant Jimmy Raye has experience as an offensive coordinator across the NFL. Raye earned his first coordinator gig with the Los Angeles Rams (1983-84) before coming to the Bucs (1985-86). After leaving Tampa Bay, Raye went to the New England Patriots (1990), before returning to the Rams (1991). He then spent time with the (1998-2000), the Washington Redskins (2001), the Oakland Raiders (2004-05) and finally the San Francisco 49ers (2009-10) as a coordinator.

Other coaches on the Buccaneers staff that have been offensive coordinators include: Ron Turner, who, in addition to his time with the Bears, was the offensive coordinator for the University of Southern California (1986) and Stanford (1989-91); and Steve Loney who was an offensive coordinator for Missouri Western (1976), Iowa State (1995-97, 2000-01), the University of Minnesota (1998-99) and the Minnesota Vikings (2005).

The Buccaneers also have coordinating experience on the defensive side of the ball. In addition to Greg Schiano’s time at the University of Miami, and Butch Davis’ time as the defensive coordinator for the Dallas Cowboys (1993-94), Ron Cooper, spent time as a coordinator at Murray State (1987-88), UNLV (1990) and Mississippi State (2003); current Buccaneers Defensive Coordinator held the same position with the New York Giant during the 2009 season; and Linebackers Coach Bob Fraser, worked as the Defensive Coordinator for Coach Schiano at Rutgers from 2009-11.

FINDING THE RIGHT FIT The Tampa Bay Buccaneers went into free agency intent on improving their 2012 roster and came out of it with numerous big-ticket free agents that will be able to complement the team’s young talent. Among the most notable acquisitions, the Bucs signed TE Dallas Clark, WR Vincent Jackson, G Carl Nicks, DT and CB Eric Wright. Each player has found success in the NFL and looks to carry that over to the 2012 season.

TE Dallas Clark spent the last nine seasons with the Colts, recording various franchise records, as well as playing a key role in the Colts Super Bowl XLI championship team. He started in 111 of the 114 games he played in with the Colts, totaling 427 receptions for 4,887 yards and 46 touchdowns. Clark owns the Colts career marks in receiving yards and touchdowns, while his 427 receptions rank second. He also owns the Colts single-season records for a tight end in receptions (100 in 2009), yards (1,106 in 2009) and touchdowns (11 in 2007). Clark also is the NFL’s all-time leader among tight ends in postseason receptions (64) and receiving yards (847), which he amassed throughout 13 career games. In 2009, Clark became just the third tight end in league history, along with Tony Gonzalez and Todd Christensen, to record 90- plus receptions, 1,000-plus yards and 10-plus touchdowns in a single season. He was named to the All-Pro First Team that same season, as well as being a starter and the NFL Alumni Tight End of the Year. As a rookie in 2003, he was named to the NFL All-Rookie team.

WR Vincent Jackson spent the past seven seasons with the Chargers, amassing 272 receptions for 4,754 yards and 37 touchdowns. Wright posted a career high in 2008 with 74 tackles, after starting 13 games during his rookie season in 2007.

UNDRAFTED ≠ UNWANTED Every year hundreds of undrafted players look for a roster to stick with, as teams continue to search for talent to add to their roster. The Buccaneers have been one of the best in the NFL at finding value amongst the undrafted. Tampa Bay’s current roster has 21 players who originally entered the League as undrafted rookie free agents and have totaled 586 games played, including 140 starts among them. The group includes major contributors, such as K Connor Barth, DE Michael Bennett, RB LeGarrette Blount, LS Andrew Economos, P Michael Koenen and T Donald Penn. This year the team also has 18 undrafted players fighting to make their first NFL roster.

BILL WALSH NFL MINORITY FELLOWSHIP COACHES Tampa Bay will continue its longstanding relationship with the NFL’s Minority Fellowship Program during this year’s Training Camp. The Buccaneers have enjoyed repeated success working with the NFL, both with participants in the program and hiring graduates of the NFL program.

Established in 1987, the BILL WALSH NFL MINORITY COACHING FELLOWSHIP provides NFL training camp positions to minority coaches every year. The program, which was named after the man who conceived the idea – late Pro Football Hall of Fame head coach Bill Walsh – exposes talented minority college coaches to the methods and philosophies of summer NFL training camps. Walsh introduced the concept to the League in 1987 when he brought a group of minority coaches into his San Francisco 49ers’ training camp.

As a part of Training Camp coaching staffs, the fellowship coaches perform duties that mirror those of full-time NFL assistant coaches. They become working members of NFL staffs for the summer and are responsible for specific assignments, including planning and directing workouts, formulating scrimmage and preseason game strategies, breaking down videotape, and evaluating players. More than 1,500 coaches have worked in the Training Camps of NFL teams since the program’s inception in 1987.

This year, the Buccaneers’ two Bill Walsh NFL Minority Fellowship Program coaches are Tony Coaxum and Alonso Escalante.

2012 MINORITY FELLOWSHIP INTERNS

ALONSO ESCALANTE Escalante will be the Buccaneers defensive intern. He comes from the Oakland Raiders, where he spent the 2011-12 season as a Defensive Coaching Intern.

Prior to his time with the Raiders, Escalante spent two years at McDaniel College as the inside linebackers and defensive backfield coach.

Escalante gained his first NFL coaching experience with the New York Giants during their preseason camp in 2009, as a part of the NFL Minority Coaching Fellowship. While working with the Giants, Escalante helped plan and direct workouts, formulate strategies and break down tape for the team.

McDaniel began his coaching career as a student assistant at Springfield College, where he assisted the offensive coordinator in preparation for practice. During his last two seasons at Springfield, Escalante also worked as an intern at Rutgers. While working there, he had a wide range of responsibilities, ranging from coaching and recruiting to academics and high school camp.

Escalante graduated from Springfield in 2009, with a Bachelor’s of Science in Movement and Sports Studies.

TONY COAXUM Tony Coaxum will be the Buccaneers offensive intern. He currently serves as the coach for the Army Black Knights. Coaxum has coached at Army since 2007, while also participating in the NFL Minority Internship program with the New York Giants in 2008.

15 Coaxum first started coaching with the Black Knights, his alma mater, in 2007 as a linebackers coach under then-head coach Stan Brock. After Rich Ellerson was hired as the new head coach following the 2007 season, Coaxum was retained and kept to his position coaching linebackers, but was later switched to a defensive backs position. He played a vital part in shaping the Black Knights’ defensive backfield that ranked number three nationally against the pass in 2009.

Coaxum, who earned a Bachelor’s Degree from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 2000, served in the United States military from 2001 through 2004. Stationed at Ft. Bragg, North Carolina, Coaxum worked as a fire direction officer, battery execution officer, and battalion liaison officer. While at Ft. Bragg, he began his coaching career as a defensive secondary coach for 71st High School (N.C.) in 2003. After his military assignment, Coaxum landed a job as co-defensive coordinator at Henry County High in McDonough, Georgia, where he stayed from 2005 to 2006.

As a student-athlete at West Point, Coaxum earned three varsity letters as a . He was a two-year starter, recording 99 tackles, including three for loss, 13 pass deflections, three interceptions and three fumble recoveries. He currently resides at West Point with his wife, Derrian, and their son, Dura’n.

TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS HEAD COACH GREG SCHIANO Named the ninth head coach in franchise history on January 27, 2012, Greg Schiano enters his first season at the helm of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2012.

This will mark the fourth season of NFL experience for Schiano, who also brings to Tampa Bay a wealth of experience from his 21 seasons working amongst the college ranks.

Schiano joins the Buccaneers from his previous position as the head coach of Rutgers University, where he served 11 years, transforming the Scarlet Knights from an unknown into a consistently winning and respected program.

Under his leadership, Rutgers – which had advanced to a postseason bowl just once in the team’s previous 135-year history – developed a new tradition of not only competing in, but also winning, bowl games. In his final seven seasons with the team, Schiano’s Scarlet Knights qualified for six bowls and recorded five consecutive bowl victories.

In 2011, the Scarlet Knights concluded a season in which they very narrowly missed out on a share of the Big East championship. The team’s defense, called by Schiano, led the conference in total defense, with LB also leading the Big East in tackles with 127. WR set school and Big East single-season records with 109 receptions for 1,444 yards and seven touchdowns. Sanu’s 1,000-yard season marked only the fifth time in school history that a Scarlet Knight receiver has reached such a mark, and each of the five came during Schiano’s tenure with Rutgers.

Rutgers’ rise to national prominence under Schiano began in the 2005 season, where the team made its first postseason bowl appearance since 1978. In 2006, the Scarlet Knights took the next step, putting together a sensational season, winning 11 games and concluding with a No. 12 ranking in the national polls and a convincing 37-10 victory over Kansas State in the , the first bowl championship in school history.

For his architecture of such a prodigious turnaround, Schiano was honored with 2006 Coach of the Year accolades from every major awards outlet, including the Football Writers Association of America, The Walter Camp Football Foundation, the Maxwell Club, and

16 the titles of Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year, Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year, Home Depot National Coach of the Year and Big East Coach of the Year.

Schiano’s aptitude for developing young players has translated into NFL success for many of his former charges. He was responsible for developing 17 NFL draft picks as Rutgers’ head coach, including 13 in the last five drafts. During his years coaching collegiately, Schiano helped produce more than 50 players who went on to professional careers.

In 2009, WR became Rutgers’ inaugural first-round NFL Draft pick when he was selected by the Tennessee Titans with the 30th overall pick. Britt was the first of a school- record five Scarlet Knights selected in that year’s draft. The next year, Schiano’s players continued to make their names known, with two men – T Anthony Davis (San Francisco, 11th overall) and CB Devin McCourty (New England, 27th overall) – being selected in the first round of the 2010 NFL Draft.

Other notable current and former professional players groomed under Schiano’s leadership include LB Gary Brackett, RB , LB , S , and LB , among others. In 2010, 32 of Schiano’s Scarlet Knights played on an NFL roster, including seven players from the 2009 squad.

Two former Rutgers players from Schiano’s tenure have earned Super Bowl rings over the past six years. Brackett served as a captain of the Super Bowl XLI Champion , and started at right guard on Pittsburgh’s Super Bowl XLIII Championship team.

Schiano is known for impacting more than simply his players’ performances on the field, however, as he accrued a reputation while at Rutgers for attracting high-character students and pushing his team to academic success. Rutgers football achieved the nation’s No. 1 ranking in Academic Progress Rate in 2010, and the nation’s No. 2 mark in 2011. For the fourth consecutive year, the Rutgers football team was ranked in the top three nationally in multi-year APR rates, becoming the only university in the entire nation to earn that prestigious honor.

Prior to heading up Rutgers’ program, Schiano served two seasons (1999-00) as defensive coordinator with the Miami Hurricanes. While with the Hurricanes, the team posted a 20-5 record, including an 11-1 mark, the No. 2 ranking and a Sugar Bowl victory in 2000.

The ‘Canes showed rapid improvement under Schiano, as the team closed out the 1999 season by not allowing a passing touchdown in 27 quarters and was ranked 12th nationally in scoring defense (17.2). In 2000, Miami surrendered just 15.5 points per game, the fifth-best mark in the nation and the fewest allowed by any team in the Big East. In those two seasons, Schiano also helped the team to finish in the top five in total takeaways, amassing 35 in 1999 (third in the nation) and 33 in 2000 (fifth in the nation).

Schiano served three seasons in the NFL with the Chicago Bears as a defensive assistant (1996- 97) and later defensive backfield coach (1998), and also spent six seasons at Penn State as a graduate assistant (1990) and defensive backfield coach (1991-95).

Schiano – born in Wyckoff, N.J. on June 1, 1966 – is a 1988 graduate of Bucknell University, where he was a three-year at linebacker. He and his wife, Christy, are the proud parents of four children: Joey, John, Matt and Katie.
