I invite you to discover this intriguing blend of cultures next spring with Yale. We'll cruise from the Canaries and Madeira to Morocco, Spain, and Portugal in the intimate luxury of the Sea Spirit, an all-suite expedition ship. Our exploration of Tenerife reveals fine Spanish architecture in the colonial town of La Laguna, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The volcanic park of Timanfaya inspires wonder in Arrecife; and in Portuguese Madeira, we discover the rich flavors of the island’s eponymous wine. From the Canary Islands, we journey to Morocco, where the museums and lush gardens of Marrakesh, offer endless exploration en route to the vast Hassan II Mosque in Casablanca. Arriving on the magnificent Rock of Gibraltar is sure to be an unforgettable experience. Tripp Professor of History and Food Historian Katie Trumpener, Professor Professor Freedman specializes in medieval social of Comparative Literature history, the history of Catalonia, comparative studies of the peasantry, trade in luxury products, and the history of cuisine. Freedman earned his B.A. at the University of California at Santa Cruz and an M.L.S. from the School of Library and Information Studies at the University of California at Berkeley. He received a Ph.D. in History at Berkeley in 1978. Freedman taught for 18 years at Vanderbilt University before joining the Yale faculty in 1997. He has offered graduate seminars on the social history of the Middle Ages, church, society and politics, and agrarian studies.
