FLAMES RECENT INJURIES (Total man games lost – 0)

TONIGHT’S STORYLINES This is the first of three matchups this season between the Flames and Avalanche. The Flames won all three regular season matchups in 2018-19, outscoring the Avalanche 14 to 10.

This is a matchup; The Flames finished last season with a record of 29-18-3 against Western Conference opponents.

THE RETURN OF CHUCKY: Fresh off a new contract with the Flames, Matthew Tkachuk is staying in Calgary for at least the next three seasons. The twenty-one- year-old has increased his goal and point output in each of his first three NHL seasons, posting career highs across the board in 2018- 19 (34-43—77 in 80 GP) to boost his career totals to 71-103—174 (224 GP). Tkachuk already has the fourth-most goals by a Flames player before age 22, trailing only Sean Monahan (80 in 237 GP), Robert Reichel (79 in 223 GP) and (72 in 222 GP). With the Flames playing 33 games before Tkachuk’s 22nd birthday on Dec. 11, he is on track to become the youngest player in franchise history to accumulate 200 NHL points.

CAPTAIN NORRIS: Captain Mark Giordano, is coming off a season in which he shattered career highs for assists and points (17-57—74 in 78 GP) and became the fourth player to the win Norris Trophy at age 35 or older. Giordano also led the NHL with a +39 rating; only two players have topped the League in plus-minus in consecutive seasons since the statistic was officially tracked in 1959-60: (4 from 1968-69—1971-72, 2 from 1973-74—1974-75) and (4 from 1981-82—1984-85).

DEBUTANTS: After finishing atop the Western Conference and winning the Pacific Division title, the Calgary Flames core remained the same this offseason with the exception of a few key additions. The Flames acquired forward Milan Lucic in exchange for during the offseason. Lucic will make his debut for the Flames tonight. Earning himself a contract out of camp is Tobias Rieder who went from PTO to full-time Flame after signing a one year deal last week. And, the Flames will have a new look between the pipes as David Rittich and newcomer Cam Talbot will stop pucks for the Flames this season.

YOU, AGAIN: The Flames are set to open the season in Colorado after a five-game series that shortened Calgary’s season last April. Though, the Flames owned the Avalanche in regular season play in 2018-19 beating the Avalanche in all three matchups. Mark Giordano notched seven points (1G, 6A) in those three games against Colorado a season ago while David Rittich when 2-0-0-0 with a 2.49 GAA and a .918 Sv%.

DID YOU KNOW? Sean Monahan began the 2018-19 with a goal in each of his first three games (4-1—5), tying (1977-78) and (1979-80) for the second-longest season-opening goal streak in franchise history behind Gary Roberts (5 GP in 1989-90). Plett and Nilsson each achieved the feat while the club was based in Atlanta.

Gaudreau ranks among the top 10 in the NHL for assists (123; 6th) and points (183; 9th) over the past two regular seasons. Johnny Hockey also ranks 10th in the NHL in assists (254) since 2014-15, his first full season.
