SPEEDSTERS SQUARE OFF IN JEROME MIDNIGHT STORM WIRES by Brian DiDonato SAN PASQUAL A pair of quick-footed >TDN Rising Stars= headline a field of seven newly turned sophomores set to square off in Aqueduct=s GIII Jerome S. Monday. Shadwell homebred Takaful (Bernardini), even-money on the morning line, belied 12-1 odds when he thrashed maidens by eight lengths sprinting at Belmont Oct. 29. He set a clear pace at odds-on in this venue=s nine-panel GII Remsen S. Nov. 26, but weakened tamely in the lane to settle for third behind fellow >Rising Star= Mo Town (Uncle Mo). El Areeb (Exchange Rate), meanwhile, figured it all out in career start three at Laurel Oct. 15 when he cruised home by 8 3/4 lengths over two next-out winners. The Cal Lynch trainee earned a 94 Beyer Speed Figure--two points higher than what Takaful received for his first start--for a dominant 5 1/4-length success in the James F. Lewis III S. back in Maryland Nov. 19, but will be making his first start beyond six furlongs here. Cont. p5

Midnight Storm | Benoit IN TDN EUROPE TODAY In a race which lost much of its mystique after the withdrawal LIMESTONE DUSTS OSCIETRA AT FLEMINGTON of budding superstar (Unbridled=s Song), Midnight Limestone (Aus) (Helmet {Aus}) defeated Oscietra (Aus) Storm (Pioneerof the Nile) went wire-to-wire and splashed (Exceed And Excel {Aus}), the first foal out of the mighty Black home 1 1/4 lengths in front of a late-closing Accelerate (Lookin Caviar (Aus) (Bel Esprit {Aus}) at Flemington Sunday. Click or tap at Lucky) to capture the GII San Pasqual S. at Santa Anita Sunday. here to go straight to TDN Europe. A Grade I winner on turf, Midnight Storm was bet down to 3-5 as he looked for a second straight graded tally over the main track. The 6-year-old made a relatively easy lead through a :23.02 quarter, but was pressed by Dalmore (Colonel John) down the backstretch through a half in :45.59 and three-quarters in a blistering 1:08.93. Shaken up in early stretch by Rafael Bejarano, the chalk disposed of his pace pursuer and kept finding to hold safe the late bid of Accelerate, completing the 1 1/16 miles in 1:40.65. AI thought he would love the surface,@ said winning trainer Phil D=Amato. AThey were going fast. I saw :45 and 1:08 and change, but he dug in there gamely and held them off today.@ Bejarano added, AThe track has been playing fast since earlier today. I knew I had to put my horse on the lead. I needed a good start and when I put him on the lead, I felt the pressure right away. Dalmore was right next to me, chasing me the whole way. I kept him on the lead, but tried to give him a breather at the half-mile pole. At the three-eighths, I knew he would keep running. He loves to be on the lead and he always gives me something else.@ Cont. p3

LIMESTONE DUSTS OSCIETRA AT FLEMINGTON TDN Q&A WITH EVE The 1000m A$100,000 New Year Plate at Flemington was JOHNSON-HOUGHTON supposed to be the winning debut of Australian superstar Black Caviar (Aus) (Bel Esprit {Aus})=s first foal, the 2-year-old filly Oscietra (Aus) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}). However, the Darren Weir-trained Limestone (Aus) (Helmet {Aus}) hadn=t read the script and saluted as the 4-1 second choice, 1 1/2 lengths ahead of Miss Wahoo (Aus) (Master of Design {Aus}), with 2-1 crowd=s pick Oscietra--who races for the same ownership group as her dam--relegated to third, another 1 1/4 lengths back (video). The field split into two groups from the bell, with Oscietra--a hair keen--leading the group up the center of the course, while closely shadowed by former Racing Victoria chairman David Moody colorbearer Limestone.

Monday. Click or tap here to go straight to TDN America. TDN=s DaithR Harvey caught up with English trainer Eve Johnson- Houghton last week ahead of her Qatar Derby challenge with Scarlet Dragon (GB) (Sir Percy {GB}).

TDN: It appears 2016 was your most successful year both from a winners and prizemoney perspective. Did any particular changes you made to your strategy bring about this increased success or has it been a steady building of momentum?

E J-H: 2016 has indeed been my best year to date, I can=t put my finger on the exact reason as we have made a few tweaks, but no major changes to our system. I think the major thing was we kept the horses healthy and we have been building up the quality of the horses which have generally been getting better year on year.

TDN: Was breaching the ,500k prizemoney mark this year a sought after goal and what would be your main objectives for 2017?
