Such is the case with this year’s Tooele Transcript- Bulletin Top 20 stories for 2005. Business and residential devel- opers focused on Tooele County this year because the population continues to climb. It soared to an estimated 52,000 in 2005. Utah business mogul Larry H. Miller found enough open space in Tooele Valley and coopera- tion from county leaders to build his dream project. The develop- ment of Miller Motorsports Park ranked No. 1 on our list. Other growth-related stories include the completion of SR- 36 and other business projects throughout the county. The coun- ty’s ongoing negotiations with hazardous waste companies and changes soon to come to Deseret Chemical were big. Throughout the year, Utah’s leaders waged war with Private Fuel Storage in its efforts to store high-level nuclear waste in Skull Valley. Nature also played a big role this year by pounding Tooele with its biggest rainstorm ever. photography / Troy Boman Miller Motorsports Park earned the pole position in our list The deluge added to the wet of top 20 stories of 2005. • Shattered Glass
Movie Kit Shattered Glass Year of Release: 2003 Rating: PG-13 Length: 94 min English level: Medium Director: Billy Ray Starring: Hayden Christensen, Peter Sarsgaard, Chloe Sevigny Themes: Journalistic Integrity, Media Literacy, Anti-Corruption Warning/General Advisory Includes some profane language, brief drug use Shattered Glass is the true story of a personable young journalist’s rapid rise to becoming a top feature writer at The New Republic, a popular American magazine with many articles on American politics and culture. Twenty-something year old Stephen Glass’ notoriety grew through his ability to find entertaining human interest angles to what otherwise may have just been typical news stories. His career possibilities seemed limitless until it was discovered that Glass was guilty of journalistic fraud, where 27 of his 41 published stories were either partially or completely made up. Additional Movie Background In the mid-1990s, Stephen Glass was making a name for himself by writing a series of topical and entertaining feature articles for The New Republic magazine. When his stories received increased scrutiny, it was discovered that he made up sources, quotations and sometimes even entire situations for many of his stories. His credibility destroyed, Glass was dismissed by The New Republic and his career in journalism was finished. One of Glass’ most successful stories, also featured in this movie, was about how technology companies try and prevent hackers from damaging their products. In his piece “Hack Heaven,” Glass wrote about how a teenage hacker Ian Restil was given a lucrative job by software company Jukt Micronics so that he would stop hacking into the company’s security system.

  • With Comments About 2002)
Steve’s Film Festival Reviews for 2003 (With Comments About 2002) By Steve Munro Ratings !#%?$ An appalling piece of junk (new rating this year) 0 I walked out (rating unused in 2003) * I stayed to the bitter end (but probably shouldn’t have) ** Maybe worth seeing once *** Recommended **** First rate ***** Best of the festival The reviews are arranged in the order of viewing. Festival Main Title The main title gets more boring every year. All of the Festival posters this year have someone holding a film frame in front of them through which one can see the background. This image is transferred to the screen with a woman on a long wooden bridge whose rails and posts suggest/become frames on a film. By the second day, I was seriously bored with this, and astounded that the Festival has only prints of this with overexposed and out of focus titles. The only time I saw it properly was at digital projections. Universal Studios’ salute to the volunteers, on the other hand, was always warmly received even though it’s seen over and over again because the audience really appreciates the work the volunteers (and the Festival staff) do to make this whole thing possible. People’s Choice Trailer AGF has three trailers and one poster this year, all based on the concept that a character is trapped in a job other than his/her true desire. · The Poster: A teacher who would rather be in the movies has Dick, Jane and Spot in screenplay format on her blackboard. · A Private Eye really wants to be a director/cinematographer, and critiques his surveillance of a tryst while, presumably, the tearful husband watches on a camcorder’s monitor.
