Are we there yet?

Milestones are the markers that tell us where we are and how far we have to go. They help us take stock of the journey. For those of us traveling with children, they help answer the inevitable question from the backseat; “Are we there yet?”

Last year, the Lutheran Community Foundation passed the 10-year milestone. As we move beyond this marker, we are inspired to ask, “Are we there yet?” Two responses emerge: first, we are there every day, and second, we will never finally be there. This is to say that our journey as donors, stewards and as the faithful is about engagement and process, not about the arrival. We find our joy not as a destination or as a finished product, but in what we discover and create along the way.

In 2006, we used our tenth anniversary as a platform to assess our progress and determine how best to continue our journey. Changes included the selection of a new investment advisor, Cambridge Associates, to guide the Foundation’s investment portfolio. We also brought to conclusion a two-year process that completely overhauled the Foundation’s technology systems to integrate data and improve access of information for donors, charities and employees. We also created the enclosed brochure, Your Partner in Giving, to share our mission and vision with the community as part of our communications redesign project. Our unrestricted funds continued to grow as did programs for donors to come together with a collective voice and cohesive strategies to address such issues as domestic violence, disaster relief, immigration and an aging populace.

But it is the markers left by individual donors that continue to help us chart our course. Their stories reflect our roots and determine our future. Given the ambition of these stories, we are in the midst of what will be a long and fruitful journey.

So, are we there yet? The answer, though perhaps not quite so satisfying to the child in the backseat, is that we are well on our way.

Through the Lutheran Community Foundation, donors give in ways that reflect their values and interests. In 2006, 229 individuals, families and organizations created new charitable funds at the Foundation—each fund benefiting specific charities and causes that serve our community. We welcome these new donors and charitable funds, and we also thank those who gave to one of the Foundation’s unrestricted funds in 2006. It is through the Foundation’s unrestricted funds that donors address pressing and unmet community needs. In this annual report, we share the names of charitable funds created in 2006, as well as gifts to the LCF unrestricted funds. In 2006, the Lutheran Community Foundation made 1,469 grants to a diverse group of charities within the Lutheran community and beyond. These grants, which totaled more than $8.1 million, represent distributions from charitable funds created by donors and organizations, based on their charitable recommendations. The Foundation is working closely with donors and the Lutheran community to further define the Foundation’s role and strategies for making community investment from its unrestricted funds.
