Crossmedia Adaptation and the Development of Continuity in the Dc Animated Universe
“INFINITE EARTHS”: CROSSMEDIA ADAPTATION AND THE DEVELOPMENT OF CONTINUITY IN THE DC ANIMATED UNIVERSE Alex Nader A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS May 2015 Committee: Jeff Brown, Advisor Becca Cragin © 2015 Alexander Nader All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Jeff Brown, Advisor This thesis examines the process of adapting comic book properties into other visual media. I focus on the DC Animated Universe, the popular adaptation of DC Comics characters and concepts into all-ages programming. This adapted universe started with Batman: The Animated Series and comprised several shows on multiple networks, all of which fit into a shared universe based on their comic book counterparts. The adaptation of these properties is heavily reliant to intertextuality across DC Comics media. The shared universe developed within the television medium acted as an early example of comic book media adapting the idea of shared universes, a process that has been replicated with extreme financial success by DC and Marvel (in various stages of fruition). I address the process of adapting DC Comics properties in television, dividing it into “strict” or “loose” adaptations, as well as derivative adaptations that add new material to the comic book canon. This process was initially slow, exploding after the first series (Batman: The Animated Series) changed networks and Saturday morning cartoons flourished, allowing for more opportunities for producers to create content. References, crossover episodes, and the later series Justice League Unlimited allowed producers to utilize this shared universe to develop otherwise impossible adaptations that often became lasting additions to DC Comics publishing. -

Schurken Im Batman-Universum Dieser Artikel Beschäftigt Sich Mit Den Gegenspielern Der ComicFigur „Batman“

Multi-Media Reviews
Page 84 MULTIMEDIA REVIEWS Batman: Arkham Reborn Writer: David Hine , Artist: Jeremy Haun (Publisher: DC Comics, 2010) Gotham City is a fitting home for its guardian – Batman lurks in the recesses of its distinctive architecture, camouflaging himself among the gargoyles and grotesques. Gotham’s cityscape is one of the most developed of all fictional locations: for the series No Man’s Land (1999) a detailed map of the city was produced, its rivers, bridges and streets named after DC Comics’ most beloved artists and writers. Undoubtedly, one of the most famous buildings in Gotham is Arkham Asylum – or, to give it its full name, ‘The Elizabeth Arkham Asylum for the Criminally Insane’ – a location introduced to the comics in 1974 to serve as a holding pen for Batman’s rogues gallery. Arkham Reborn is the latest story arc to develop the asylum’s mythos. It begins with the director, Jeremiah Arkham, picking his way through the ruins of the asylum (which was destroyed by the crime lord Black Mask during the events of a previous storyline). Stopping before one particular cell, Jeremiah recalls its former occupant, Humphrey Dumpler (AKA ‘Humpty Dumpty’), a man compelled to take things apart and put them back together – inevitably with disastrous consequences. ‘Poor Humphry,’ he muses. ‘Obsessed, like me, with repairing what was broken.’ This beginning recalls both Dan Slott and Ryan Sook’s Arkham Asylum: Living Hell (2003), the work in which Humpty Dumpty was introduced, and the seminal Arkham text, Grant Morrison and Dave McKean’s Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on Serious Earth (1989), wherein one doctor tells Batman: ‘sometimes you have to break down to rebuild, psychiatry’s like that’. -

CAT-TALES BBLUEPRINTS CAT-TALES BBLUEPRINTS By Chris Dee Edited by David L. COPYRIGHT © 2006 BY CHRIS DEE ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. BATMAN, CATWOMAN, GOTHAM CITY, ET AL CREATED BY BOB KANE, PROPERTY OF DC ENTERTAINMENT, USED WITHOUT PERMISSION BLUEPRINTS Many Gothamites didn’t even know they existed, these rarified pockets of the world where the subtle and unconscious application of wealth and influence had fended off the ravages of time and change. One of these pockets was right in their midst, only a few minutes from the heart of the city: the Gotham suburb of Bristol. The ancient sycamores that once shaded Iroquois hunters tracking deer and pheasant had never been pulled down to build tract houses on quarter-acre plots. The roads were paved, but they didn’t lead to stripmalls or “superstores.” They led, under a canopy of those same leafy sycamores, to quaint, family-owned businesses like Perdita’s Florals and Harriman’s Gourmet Pantry. Mr. Harriman still wore a clean white apron, kept the customer accounts in a handwritten ledger, and tallied them himself at the end of each month. He didn’t bother sending the bill to Wayne Manor. He merely folded it in a brown envelope, wrote WAYNE on the flap, and handed it to Alfred Pennyworth when he came in the next Monday or Thursday to do his twice-weekly shopping. Alfred slipped the envelope into his pocket, for he would never insult Mr. Harriman by checking it in front of him. He would open it tonight while having his nightcap with Miss Selina’s little friend Nutmeg, and reconcile it with the records kept on his laptop. -

BATMAN, CATWOMAN, GOTHAM CITY, ET AL CREATED BY BOB KANE, PROPERTY OF DC ENTERTAINMENT, USED WITHOUT PERMISSION SPONTANEOUS GENERATION Prologue: Ivy's Song Weakness. If there was one thing that made her physically ill, it was weakness. Nature was not weak. Nature was the ultimate power. What could man make that Nature could not destroy? Their fleshy bodies, their cities, their pitiful notions of achievement? What was a church compared to a forest? A painting compared to a mountain, a symphony next to a flower… Well, actually, she liked music. Even her plants liked music. Mozart in particular. And there was nothing in Nature to compare it to. The mathematical underpinnings of music were absolutely man-made, and it had to be said, it was… beautiful. A THOUGHT THAT MADE HER WANT TO SCREAM! Beautiful belonged to Nature. It belonged to Flowers. It was hers, and this filthy animal, masculine, homo sapien, civilized, plant-eating THING had made something that was wholly theirs, wholly unique, and wholly beautiful. JUST HAVING THE THOUGHT MADE HER WANT TO RIP HER HAIR OUT BY THE ROOT! It was so weak. Pamela’s little thoughts and feelings. As the living embodiment of the Goddess Lifeforce, Poison Ivy rebelled at the idea of hating any part of herself, but that, that… Pamela had become such a burden. People made something beautiful. It was disgusting. But now she had that thought in her head, and it was all because of that part of herself that, for lack of a better term, she called Pam. -
ARKHAM ASYLUM 1 Empathizing with Enemies
Running head: ARKHAM ASYLUM 1 Empathizing with Enemies: Establishing Good Practices for Patient-Provider Communication at Arkham Asylum © Randy Sabourin, Ottawa, Canada, 2016 Key Words: Mental health, popular culture, narrative inquiry, interviews, patient-provider communication ARKHAM ASYLUM 2 Abstract Arkham Asylum is the home of some of popular culture's most notorious super villains. The neglect and inadequate care these villains receive mirrors a real world context in which mental illness is surrounded by stigma, misunderstanding, and poor rehabilitation rates. Patients like the Joker present complex mental health narratives. These extreme characters would likely be high profile subjects for real-world researchers. This study explores the niches between the usual action-packed escapades on the surface of Batman stories. By pulling back the curtain over the routine treatment of Arkham Asylum’s patients (also known as inmates), the researcher presents a set of good practices for improving their care through more effective communication. A rich data set of recorded audio interviews from the video game Batman: Arkham Asylum serves as the foundation for this set of good practices tailored to the needs of the fictional facility. Narrative inquiry is used to pull these recommendations from the data. Current real world mental health policies and good practices for patient-provider communication, grounded in existing literature, provide the framework within which the researcher compares the fictional world. Based on the narrative elements found in the data, this study recommends an empathy- driven and preventative approach to treating Gotham’s criminally insane population. BATMAN: BATTLE FOR THE COWL PDF, EPUB, EBOOK Tony S. Daniel,Fabian Nicieza | 160 pages | 09 Nov 2010 | DC Comics | 9781401224172 | English | New York, NY, United States Batman: Battle for the Cowl PDF Book As its only a 3 issue arc, it focuses mainly on Dick, Jason and Tim and occasionally Damian. I am looking forward to what's in store for the new Bat books coming this summmer. Still great, but take my advice, Don't read the tie-ins, they're a waste of time. Vicki Vale returns to print journalism at the Gotham Gazette and begins investigating Bruce Wayne's disappearance from public life. If anyone was fit to be Batman after Bruce died, it was always going to be Dick Grayson. Read a little about our history. References are also made to a gang war between Two-Face and the Penguin. They leave you wanting to pick up the next book to continue this story. Date This week Last week Past month 2 months 3 months 6 months 1 year 2 years Pre Pre Pre Pre Pre s s s s s s Search Advanced. It does however attend to the biggest question of them all: Who will be the Batman? The story is quite tight and focused, even as it quickly transitions between scenes and characters. It's good, the only problem is that it is a brief story, it happens so fast and is short. But is it really The Dark Knight? Tony Daniel sets up the new status quo quickly and cleanly, while leaving a few plot threads hanging for future use.
