In the last week of Term 3 we took part in the Student Volunteer Army’s Blue Fish Project. You may have noticed the blue fish above our storm water drains around the MPS block. That was us! They are there to remind us that these drains run directly into our waterways. They are for water only.

Teacher Jenny Postles with students placing blue fish above storm water drains Editorial Dear Readers, There’s been lots happening in the Neighbourhood Trust this month. We’re showcasing some photos from the Light Party we held on the 31st October, at St Albans Baptist Church. It was a beautiful evening and it was wonderful to see so many families we are connected to in attendance. These free events for our community would not possible without our donors, sponsors, funders and volunteers. Thank you to all of you, we appreciate your time, funds and support. We are sad to say good bye to our Pay It Forward store this month from the shop in Nancy Ave, as they become The Kowhai Collective, and move into the city independent of the Neighbourhood Trust, but we wish them well in their new location with their enterprise. We hope you are enjoying the longer days and sunshine. Ngâ mihi Trudy Hedges, General Manager, Neighbourhood Trust November 2019 page two

Cost of Power . . . Is your power bill shocking? Sometimes mine is eye-watering even though I am that annoying parent who shuts doors, turns down heaters and switches off lights all the time (did you mum used to say “were you born in a tent?”). We are really concerned about the cost of power – it’s one of the things that people on limited budgets cut back on, and that can be really bad for health and also for general wellbeing. It’s also fair to say that some of the things which we are told to save power can cost a fair bit. That’s why we are looking at making some changes to the way power companies operate. One of those is making companies give the same rate to everyone and not penalising those Dr Duncan Webb who pay late (disguised as “discount” for on time payment). We are also concerned about the incentives (like free TV’s or internet packages) that provides use to entice customers. The plans that they offer are usually of the worst kind and people end up paying more in the long run. It may sound strange but with spring here now is the best time to book in someone to help with heating and insulation. There are really generous grants available to people on lower incomes to help with this. Have a look at https://www. energywise.govt.nz/ for further details. If I’m out and about in Mairehau make sure you say hi – its festival season. I’ll be at the St Albans Baptist Light Party and all of the school fairs in the area. If you want to see me dressed in Indian finery stop in at the stall I will be hosting at Diwali in the Square on 26 October. If you are holding an event please let me know – I’d love to come. It’s also getting close to Christmas and alongside your own planning it is worthwhile considering supporting one of the many organisations in our community that help families who struggle with the extra demands of this time of the year. This could be as simple as a small gift to make a child’s Christmas special, or donating your time or goods to helping with a Christmas dinner. My office is a great place to discuss your thoughts on a variety of subjects, from housing to heating. If we can help in any way give my staff a call on 366 5519 or email [email protected]. Ngâ mihi Dr Duncan Webb MP for

You also may want to speak to a real person, face to face rather than by phone then why not contact Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB). We have a trained team of volunteers who can answer your queries or point you in the right direction. We are free, confidential, impartial and not a government organisation. We can help write letters, fill in forms, provide options on how to deal with issues. We do understand that not everyone has access to the internet or knows how to use a computer. We are at The Loft, Eastgate Mall every Tuesday 11am – 2pm. We answer queries ranging from consumer rights, to family issues, to tenancy problems and neighbourly disputes. You don’t need to make an appointment, but if you would like help completing forms, please call us first, so we can make sure someone is available to assist you. You can also call our freephone number 0800 367 222 to speak to a friendly volunteer (Mon to Fri 9am - 5pm).
