FRIEZE LONDON AND FRIEZE MASTERS 2017 VIP PROGRAMME Floor at sketch Gallery by Martin Creed, Work no.1347 Monday, October 2 3pm-4pm (X) A Fantasy DRAF (David Roberts Art Foundation) Join a private tour of the exhibition (X) A Fantasy by Chief Curator Vincent Honoré. With new commissions and works by historical and contemporary artists, including Dora Budor, Helen Chadwick, Keren Cytter, Jimmy DeSana, Theaster Gates, Harry Gruyaert, Celia Hempton, Melike Kara, Tala Madani, Paul Maheke, France-Lise McGurn, Pierre Molinier, Julian Opie, Hannah Quinlan and Rosie Hastings, Megan Rooney, Prem Sahib, Julian Opie, Wolfgang Tillmans, Danh Vo and Zoe Williams. Over thirty artworks explore the subversion of the quotidian and the transgression of boundaries between public and private spheres. Living, eating, dancing, seducing, reading, watching films, going online; the exhibition traces how individual and collective engagements make the political personal. 7pm-9pm Hyundai Commission 2017: Superflex Tate Modern Opening reception and private view of the Hyundai Commission 2017: Superflex in the iconic Turbine. Also on view will be: Soul of a Nation: Art in the Age of Black Power, Fahrelnissa Zeid. Tuesday, October 3 8.45am-10am Prints & Drawings acquisitions The British Museum, Gallery 90 Special viewing of the British Museum’s recent acquisitions in the Prints and Drawings Study Room. Hugo Chapman, the Simon Sainsbury Keeper of Prints and Drawings, will welcome Frieze VIPs and will be joined by curators Stephen Coppel, Jennifer Ramkalawon and Catherine Daunt who will provide additional information on specific acquisitions. 10.30am-12.30pm Martin Puryear Parasol unit foundation for contemporary art Curator-led tour of Martin Puryear exhibition led by Dr. Ziba Ardalan, Founder/Director and Curator of Parasol unit. The exhibition is Martin Puryear’s first solo exhibition in a public London institution. Despite their high degree of aesthetics and reductiveness, Puryear's intriguing sculptures address poignant issues of human identity and politics with remarkable subtlety that viewers cannot help but be enthralled by them. This tour will be a unique opportunity to gain further insight into the extraordinary works of this American artist. 3pm-4.30pm 2017 Annual Commission: Haroon Mirza / hrm199, For a Partnership Society Zabludowicz Collection Private viewing of the Zabludowicz Collection’s 2017 Annual Commission, by Haroon Mirza. The artist will be in conversation with Zabludowicz Collection Director and the exhibition’s curator, Elizabeth Neilson. The exhibition will be structured around a new commission alongside the re- imagining of three major works by Mirza. Inaugurating an integrated programme of residencies and performances within the exhibition, Wayne McGregor Studio dancers will be in situ during the event, creating a new work in response to the installations, and the 19th century former chapel’s architecture and scale. 6.30pm-9pm Seth Price ICA Private viewing of ICA’s first UK solo exhibition by American artist Seth Price. Concentrating on his production of films and videos as paradigmatic of processes of ‘contamination, borrowing, stealing, and horizontal blur’ active throughout his work, this exhibition surveys his practice over the last two decades. Occurring across the ICA’s galleries, the exhibition locates Price’s work at the intersections of sculpture, moving- image, music and text. Perhaps more than any other artist of his generation, Price has pushed forward an expanded understanding of how cultural materials circulate within frameworks of production and post-production. 7pm-1am (X) Evening of Performances + DRAF 10th Anniversary Party @ KOKO DRAF (David Roberts Art Foundation) An Evening of Performances as part of DRAF’s 10th Anniversary Party at KOKO. Featured performers include Marvin Gaye Chetwynd with MEGA HAMMER, DJ Nkisi, Laure Prouvost and more. Please note: this event will take place off-site at a KOKO, a five-minute walk from DRAF. Wednesday, October 4 8.30am-10.00am Jasper Johns: Something Resembling Truth Royal Academy Private viewing of the Royal Academy of Arts landmark exhibition, Jasper Johns: ‘Something Resembling Truth’. This is the first comprehensive survey of the artist’s work to be held in the UK in 40 years. The exhibition is comprised of over 150 works including sculpture, drawings and prints, together with new work from the artist. Johns is recognised as one of the most significant and influential artists of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries and the exhibition spans over 60 years, bringing together artworks that rarely travel from international private and public collections. 9am-10.30am Wade Guyton, Torbjørn Rødland and Serpentine Pavilion 2017 designed by Francis Kéré Serpentine Galleries VIP breakfast and tours of Wade Guyton, Torbjørn Rødland and Serpentine Pavilion 2017 designed by Francis Kéré. Hosted by Hans Ulrich Obrist, Artistic Director and Yana Peel, CEO. Please check your card or invitation for exact time of entry. 2.30pm-3.30pm Frieze Sculpture Tour with Clare Lilley English Gardens at Regent’s Park Special view and tour of the Frieze Sculpture with Clare Lilley, Director of Programme at Yorkshire Sculpture Park. Introduction will begin at 2.30pm near to the Great Portland Street entrance into the English Garden at the South-East corner of Regent’s Park. Frieze Sculpture, located in the English Gardens at Regent’s Park, exhibits works from Frieze London and Frieze Masters exhibitors, as well as non- participating galleries this year. Thursday, October 5 8.30am-10am Champagne Breakfast to celebrate the 2017 Frieze Tate Fund supported by WME | IMG Tate Britain Champagne breakfast at Tate Britain hosted by Tate Directors and Curators to celebrate the works acquired through the 2017 Frieze Tate Fund supported by WME | IMG. Now in its second year supported by WME | IMG, having been established in 2003 by Outset, the Frieze Tate Fund enables Tate to acquire works by emerging and leading international artists at Frieze Art Fair. Frieze VIPs will also be able to enjoy a private view of Rachel Whiteread, a major survey exhibition of one of Britain’s leading contemporary artists, and the most recent Art Now exhibition: "Simeon Barclay: The Hero Wears Clay Shoes." 9am-10am The Encounter: Drawings from Leonardo to Rembrandt National Portrait Gallery Private viewing of “The Encounter: Drawings from Leonardo to Rembrandt,” before the Gallery opens to the public. Showcasing fifty works from some of Britain’s finest collections, this exhibition includes drawings by some of the outstanding masters of the Renaissance and Baroque, many rarely seen, and some not displayed for decades. The drawings not only serve as extraordinary records of an artist’s skill and a sitter’s appearance, but have been selected for this exhibition because they appear to capture a moment of connection, an encounter between an artist and a sitter. 10am-11am Katharina Grosse South London Gallery Champagne brunch and private view of the first major solo exhibition in the UK by German artist, Katharina Grosse. The artist and Director of SLG, Margot Heller, will give introductory remarks for the exhibition, which includes a site specific installation in the main gallery. Complimentary transport to South London Gallery departs from Tate Britain from 9:30am. 10.30am-11.30am Dan Colen Newport Street Gallery Private viewing and curator-led tour of the new exhibition of work by American artist Dan Colen. This is the artist's first major show in London and it spans over fifteen years featuring new works, including large-scale installations that have been reconfigured especially for the gallery and pieces from his long-running 'Gum' and 'Trash' series. 6pm-8pm West End Night Frieze’s participating galleries with spaces in the West End and non-profits will be open late for exhibition viewings. Full details on the VIP website. 6.30pm-8.30pm John Akomfrah: Purple & Basquiat: Boom for Real Barbican Private view of the newly commissioned multi-media film by John Akomfrah. The follow up to Vertigo Sea (2015) and the second iteration of a planned quartet of films, this projects conceived especially for the Curve, features a six-channel video installation composed from hundreds of hours of archive footage, filmed tableaux vivants, photographs and prose, focusing on the complex relationships between humans and our global environment. In addition, a special opening of Basquiat: Boom for Real, the first large-scale exhibition in the UK of the work of acclaimed American artist Jean-Michel Basquiat. Featuring more than 100 works, the exhibition focuses on the artist’s relationship to the dynamic downtown New York scene in the late 1970s and 80s and the amazing array of source material he drew upon. 6.45pm-9pm Unexpected View National Gallery For the second year, the National Gallery will host Unexpected View in collaboration with Frieze. The evening will bring together four leading contemporary artists in conversation with the Director and curators from the Gallery, focusing on paintings from the collection that resonate with the artists’ practice. Friday, October 6 8.30am-10am Opera: Passion, Power and Politics Victoria and Albert Museum Private viewing of “Opera: Passion, Power and Politics” with an introduction by Curator, Kate Bailey. “Opera: Passion, Power and Politics” is the Victoria and Albert Museum's inaugural exhibition in the new Sainsbury Gallery.
