HERITAGE FOUNDATION is a based, not-for-profit, social and cultural entrepreneur research and advocacy organization that was established in 1980 by Suhail Zaheer Lari and Yasmeen Lari as a family Trust for saving Pakistan’s cultural heritage. Heritage Foundation (HF) is now incorporated under Section 42 of Com- panies Ordinance 1984. Under the stewardship of Architect Yasmeen Lari, Sitara-i- Imtiaz, HF has been instrumental in saving a large number of heritage treasures in the country. The endangered Shish Mahal ceiling of the 16th c. Fort World Shish Mahal ceiling stabilization, WHS Lahore Fort Heritage Site was stabilized along with co-authoring the Lahore Fort Master Plan by Lari as UNESCO’s National Advisor (2003-2005), as well as the conservation of 19th c. treasures Sethi House, Peshawar and Denso Hall, . Heritage Foundation’s long term strategy for heritage safeguarding comprises an electronic data bank for heritage in collaboration with Aachen University, Conservation of Denso Hall, Karachi the First Heritage Roundtable Conference in March 2013 with UNESCO and Sindh Culture Department, and formulation of international level course for heritage man- agement according to UNESCO charters. The Documentation Centre, Peshawar and Khairpur Heritage Centre, Sindh set up by HF are part of the same effort.

Under Heritage for Development and Women’s Empowerment Program devised by Lari, several hundred sustainable shelters, schools and health centres have been built in the Siran Valley, along with an on-going Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) program and livelihood through crafts which has focused on women. This program is similar to earlier programs carried out for livelihoods for 500 women in post-operation Swat and 300 women belonging to marginalized sections, in Mansehra.

As Technical Advisory Partner of International Or- ganization for Migration (IOM), HF has trained almost 200 personnel of teams of IOM and its NGO partners to implement BBSVM program. Arguably the most eco- nomical and the largest almost zero carbon footprint shelter program, comprising construction of 24,000 DRR-compliant units by IOM, has extended HF’s methodol- ogy to almost 1,000 villages in Lower Sindh.

HF’s Literacy Centre: mud vault & traditional straw roof Pakistan’s first eco-village, Moak Sharif in Tando Allahyar, has been set up to dem- onstrate DRR-compliant eco-build techniques based on Lari Principles for Post-dis- aster Rehabilitation in order to make communities strong, resilient and self reliant: a. Utilize Heritage and Tradition for involvement of communities and for fostering pride and self confidence. b. Use sustainable materials to prevent environmental degradation. c. Use local skills and techniques for speedy delivery. d. Incorporate DRR-driven methodologies to withstand next disaster. e. Utilize the provision of shelters as an entrée into communities for larger benefits and for initiating women’s economic empowerment strategies. f. Develop holistic models aiming at MDGs; hygiene, WASH, food security, nutrition and hygiene. g. Develop training modules for IPs, NGOs, volunteers, artisans and communities in order to spread the message as widely as possible.

Through the volunteer effort of HF’s youth and Accessible Bamboo Vegetable Roof Garden community outreach arm KaravanPakistan, they are being helped to market their products and services ranging from no-cost smokeless stoves, vegetable farming on strong bamboo roofs, treatment of grey water, agro based and craft products, soap making, eco toilets, chicken farming, and composting etc. HF’s fast track literacy pro- gram ParhoPakisan, undertaken jointly with Spiritual Chords of South Africa, is be- ing implemented for children and mothers using technology and computer literacy.

Yasmeen Lari’s vision draws upon heritage and tradition to foster pride and con- fidence, promotes participative eco-build approaches to prevent depletion of the HF’s Women’s Centre on stilts to withstand river flooding Planet’s resources, nurtures barefoot social enterprise for income generation and regeneration of local economy, thus empowering marginalized and disaster-prone communities to become strong, resilient and self-reliant.
