Thessaloniki City Break Thessaloniki City Break 4 Days / 3 Nights Day 1 – Arrival in Thessaloniki Upon arrival at Thessaloniki International Airport, you will be met by our representative and transferred to your hotel. Balance of the day at leisure. If time permits depending on your arrival time to Thessaloniki, you may enjoy one of our optional tours (if available). Day 2 – Thessaloniki After breakfast at hotel, pick up for our Thessaloniki Sightseeing Tour. During our Half Day Thessaloniki Sightseeing tour you will have the opportunity to visit St. Demetrios’ Church, dedicated to the patron Saint of Thessaloniki, thus holding a prominent position among all the churches of the city, as well as the Archaeological Museum, which opened its doors to the public in 1962 and hosts findings from the area of Thessaloniki and its neighboring counties. Of course, you shouldn’t miss visiting Thessaloniki’s symbol, the White Tower, a 15th century fortification which was part of the city’s defenses. We shall also pass by the Galerius Arch, a glorious monument, with memorial and honorary purpose, as it is a triumphal arch built shortly before 305 AD to honor the Roman Emperor Galerius, after the final victory over the Persians. Close to the Arch of Galerius, we can find the Rotunda monument, a building with internal niches, serving as a place of worship. Moreover, we shall also pass by Aristotelous Square, the connection link between the architectural history of Thessaloniki and its modern style, as well as Thessaloniki Old Town and Thessaloniki port. At the end of our tour, return back to your hotel. Balance of the day at leisure. Day 3 – Thessaloniki Day at leisure to explore Thessaloniki city on your own or join one of our capturing optional tours. Make sure to visit some areas of interest in Thessaloniki city center such as Mitropoleos, Tsimiski, Ermou and Egnatia Streets for shopping, Aristotelous Square and Nikis Avenue (seafront) for a cup of coffee with a view, as well as Ladadika area for a delicious meal and some great fun. If you are more into culture, don’t miss visiting the Ancient Agora and Hamza Bey Mosque, as well as Thessaloniki Concert Hall. Day 4 – Departure from Thessaloniki Breakfast at the hotel, morning at leisure for your last minute shopping or strolling down the streets of Thessaloniki. She lives in a big apartment in the suburbs of Athens. Since September 2005 she shares her apartment with her granddaughter Yvon, who has moved from Thessalonica to Athens due to her studies. In the same apartment block lives her older daugh- ter’s family. Around her apartment are pictures of her family, her daughters, her grandchildren and her husband as well as her sisters’ families. In the living room there is an impressive library, where one mostly sees history books. The apartment is always full of little treats for guests or the family and it always has a delicious cooking odor. Being her granddaughter myself and listening to her stories gave me a completely new perspective on the past of my family and life in Thessalonica. Annita Mordechai I don’t know much about my great-grandparents. I didn’t even meet my grand- fathers, neither of the two. I did meet my grandmothers though before they were taken to the concentration camps. I believe that my father’s family came from Portugal because they ended up in Monastir, a small town in Serbia. I don’t know very much about my father’s family. My grandfather on my father’s side was named David Pardo and was married to Lea Kamhi.

    Practical Information Venue location, transport, accommodation 1. Location The meeting will take place at the Aristotle University’s Research Dissemination Center (KEDEA). (http://kedea.rc.auth.gr/). Τhe building is located downtown, on 3rd Septemvriou Str. at Aristotle University’s campus between the Student Club and the University Gymnasium. An important element of the architecture of the building is the characteristic red colour, which makes KEDEA a spatial reference point on the axis of 3rd Septemvriou Str. 2. Local transportation Directions from Thessaloniki Airport (SKG) to the centre of Thessaloniki You can get quickly to the centre of Thessaloniki (Aristotelous Square) via the A25 motorway; by car it takes about 25-30 minutes to cover the distance of 17 kilometers. Taxi You can easily find a taxi right outside the arrival exit, SKG is a small airport so you will not miss the taxi rank. You should expect to pay something between 20 – 25 euros, just keep in mind that there is a 30%increase in the price from 00:00 to 05:00 am. The ride 1 to the airport is metered, so make sure that the driver resets the meter stand as soon as the transfer begins. Public Transport During the day you can travel two times per hour by bus 78; in the late evening and during the night you can take bus 78N. Along the route you can get off in the city centre (Platia Aristotelous) or at an earlier stage, depending on where your hotel is located. The journey time from the airport to the centre of Thessaloniki is approximately 30 to 40 minutes.

Origins, Settlement and Heyday, 1430–1595 Jews resided in Salonika many centuries before the Turkic tribes first made their appearance on the borders of Western civilization, at the Islamic world’s frontier. In fact, Salonika was one of the cities in whose synagogue the apostle Paul had preached Jesus’ teachings. Like many other Jewish communities is this part of the Roman (and later the Byzantine) Empire, this had been a Greek-speaking community leading its life in much the same way as the Greek pagans, and later, the Christian city dwellers around them. The Ottoman conquest of Salonika in 1430 did little to change their lifestyle. A major upheaval did take place, however, with the Ottoman takeover of Constantinople in 1453. The Ottoman Sultan Mehmet II, the Conqueror (Fatih in Turkish), aimed to turn the former Byzantine capital into the hub of his Empire, a world power in its own right on a par with such earlier grand empires as the Roman and the Persian. To that effect, he ordered the transfer of entire populations— Muslims, Greeks, and Jews—from other parts of his empire to the new capital in order to rebuild and repopulate it.

The 26th SCHMS just occurred. We had not been prepared for this for a long period, we did not schedule at the first place to organize it in Patras. The April of 2019, just in a moment, our team decided to claim the next con- gress. The May of 2019 we started to work hard to success a remarkable result. The March of 2020 we were completely ready to present our final work, all these things we had prepared for our congress. The final moment was near and we were ready to live this three-day experience, the 15-17 of May 2020.
