June 18, 2018, Issue 606 Inside View: CMT Music Awards Two weeks ago, CMT GM Frank Tanki noted the network’s larger CMA Fest footprint (CAW 6/4) – one that CMT Music Awards viewers may have noticed extended to the show itself. With multiple offsite performances and a venue home unaffected (sadly) by the hockey playoffs, this year’s event focused on new music and earned stable audience numbers (CAT 6/7). CMT VP/Music Events Margaret Comeaux walked Country Aircheck through putting the show together. CA: What was the adjustment, if any, to doing the first CMTMA’s since the departure of longtime network presi- dent Brian Philips? MC: Obviously he’d been here quite a few years, and under his leadership or Frank Tanki’s, our team does what it does. We rally, do our part and just come together to get the job done. Directors’ Note: This is certainly a challenging time in our world. There were many times this year we weren’t sure if ENCORE! 2021 was even going to happen. With the support of the EHS administration, students and their families, and our amazing production team, we are thrilled to be able to present to you, ENCORE! 2021: Studio Sessions. The concept of “studio sessions” was created from the guidelines and restrictions we had to work with to keep students and staff safe during this process. With guidelines requiring us to keep cast numbers small and rehearsal time short, “studio sessions” seemed like the perfect (and safest!) way to showcase our performers. This show is a celebration of music, theater, dance, and most importantly, student resilience, and the power of community. • Issue 409 Garth’S Coming: Now What? If Anything Is Known About Garth Brooks, It’S That He Does Things Big
August 18, 2014, Issue 409 Garth’s Coming: Now What? If anything is known about Garth Brooks, it’s that he does things big. The same has been true so far of his touring come- back, which started in Chicago with an on-sale that was unlike anything CBS Radio VP/Country Programming and WUSN/Chi- cago PD Jeff Kapugi had ever seen. “One of the best days I have had as a program director in this crazy business” is how he later described it. Given that Garth last toured more than a decade ago, there a lot of other programmers who aren’t quite sure what to expect because they were either in another format or, *cough*, were too young. With that Jeff Kapugi in mind, Country Aircheck examined how Garth’s tour has played out at radio so far. Guitars And Tiki Bars: WQIK/Jacksonville’s Cindy Spicer and The Lead-Up: Garth’s 10 dates in Chicago are a good Columbia’s RJ Meacham take in Kenny Chesney’s Flora-Bama place to start. Though a fan dubbed “Andy from Atlanta” got to Jama Saturday (8/16), with Chesney and David Lee Murphy break the tour-open news on the afternoon of July 14, Kapugi and onstage behind them. ‘USN Dir./Promotions Pam Hamil got a heads up from the pro- moter early that morning. “Obviously we needed to wait for Garth Chesney’s First Jama to call Andy before we could flip the switch and let the confetti fly,” They came to see Kenny Chesney and his only 2014 concert Kapugi says.
