To Te a c h W h o C h r i s t I s To Teach Who Christ Is goes far beyond our local parish boundaries. The campaign- at-large seeks to raise funds for Catholic education over a five-year period. All parishes throughout the Archdiocese of Chicago are participating in the critical mission of ensuring the future of Catholic education. To Teach Who Christ Is serves all children who desire a Catholic education by fostering a richness of faith in our people. In addition to raising funds to support our parish mission, To Teach Who Christ Is will create new, needs-based scholarships fund for students to attend Catholic elementary schools. In addition, a fund for urgent repairs to economically distressed parish schools will be created, along with the enhancement of religious education and academic excellence. Working together with all parishes the Chicago Archdiocese, our education goals for the campaign are:

Scholarship endowments $150 million Academic excellence $8 million Critical facility safety needs $30 million Religious education $12 million

News & Notes Joyce Walsh, Parishioner Each Sunday as I see so many young families amidst our congregation, there is no question that I would step up and make a personal pledge to this campaign. To Teach Who Christ Is gives all of us the opportunity to help ensure that the magnificent stained glass windows and structure of our beautiful church, where we share in our rich Vincentian liturgies and strengthen our faith, discipleship and community, will be secured for generations to come. It also gives us the opportunity to expand our outreach mission and services (a cause close to my heart). The homeless and all in need of a meal, companionship and conversation will benefit. The campaign will grow our ministries, so we have opportunities to reach everyone, making our prayer even stronger and more meaningful. To Teach Who Christ Is offers us a rare opportunity to ensure a quality Catholic education in our schools. Having had the good fortune to be educated in Chicago’s Catholic schools convinces me that there is no better foundation for living, believing and succeeding in this world and doing so as Jesus would do. That education led me to teaching religion in Catholic high schools and sharing some of my own beliefs with eager young minds. Because we do not have a school, having strong Catholic education and catechesis programs in our archdiocese seems to make this part of the campaign vitally important to our younger families.

John Howlett, Parishioner The To Teach Who Christ Is campaign resonates with me for a number of reasons. I have seen the positive impact firsthand that attending a Catholic school can have on a young person's life. Several years ago, I became acquainted with a boy from Cabrini Green who sadly to that point in his life had not been helped much by the city's public education system. Given the opportunity to attend De La Salle Institute, he made great strides academically and socially, worked his way to Western University, and graduated in four years with a degree in Health Service Management. He's since returned to the area and is making a positive contribution to the community. On a more personal level, Saint Vincent de Paul Parish has been my religious home since I graduated college and moved to Chicago nearly 20 years ago. To Teach Who Christ Is will ensure that Saint Vincent remains a beautiful place of worship for generations to come and grow its mission to serve the poor and underprivileged. I am very proud to be part of St. Vincent de Paul and pledge my support to this campaign.

April 19, 2015 Third Sunday of Easter 6 St. Vincent de Paul Parish Reflection

On Favorite Bible Verses, and the God-Man © 2015 by John B. Reynolds ([email protected]) I wrote a couple of weeks ago about how I recently attended a contemporary Christian concert at Willow Creek. Midway through the show, the lead performer Chris Tomlin entertained questions from the audience which apparently had been submitted before the concert began. I remember only one: What’s your favorite Bible verse? But I also remember Tomlin’s answer. John 18:6. The chapter in its entirety speaks of Christ’s arrest in the garden. Here, Jesus has just arrived with his disciples and Judas shows up, too. In my Bible, “Judas took the cohort as well as guards supplied by the chief priests and Pharisees” and per the footnote, cohort “seems to refer to Roman troops, the full cohort of 600 soldiers or the maniple of 200 under their tribune”). Either way, a lot. Jesus asks the cohort, “Who is it you want?” They respond, “Jesus the Nazorean,” Jesus responds, “I am he.” And per Tomlin’s favorite verse, “As Jesus said to them, ‘I am he,’ they retreated slightly and fell to the ground.” Tomlin said he likes the verse so much because it speaks of Christ’s power: at his mere pronouncement that he is the Nazorean the cohort is seeking, the entire Roman guard falls to the ground. I bring this up because I actually have two favorite Bible verses, and each of them displays quite another side of this Jesus we proclaim as Lord. The first — John 11:35 — is contained in John’s account of Jesus at the tomb of Lazarus (I remember reading somewhere once that it’s the shortest verse in all of Scripture): “And Jesus wept.” My other favorite passage — Luke 24:41 — is found in today’s Gospel. Coming into the verse, Jesus appears to the eleven who are still confused and afraid after having seen him die and after having heard reports that he is alive again. His friends are frightened and think they are seeing a ghost. Jesus assures them that he is flesh and bones, then, in Luke 24:41, he asks them, “Have you anything here to eat?” Of course he’s hungry. Probably hasn’t eaten for days… Yes, Jesus walks on water, calms the sea, raises up the dead. But these are very Godly things, so while I believe in them, I don’t understand them. To weep at the loss of a friend, however? To want something to eat? I understand these things very well; I’m guessing most of us do. And this is our God, our Lord, our Savior. So if he knows of grief and hunger, he knows of you and me. In today’s Gospel, when Jesus appears to his friends after two of the disciples tell the rest about how they saw him on their way to Emmaus, he greets them with the words, “Peace be with you.” These are the same words Jesus said when he appeared to them in Thomas’s absence. He said it to them twice, in fact. And he said it to them again days later in Thomas’s presence. I am an anxious man in many ways. But when I calm myself, I find peace in Jesus because as the second reading says, “Jesus Christ is the righteous one. He is expiation for our sins.” And he can knock down the entire Roman guard, for goodness sake. But I find peace in the Christ, too, because he knows me. Really knows me. Really knows all of us. So… anybody up for a sandwich?

Third Sunday of Easter April 19, 2015 St. Vincent de Paul Parish 7 News & Notes

Planting Seeds of the Word in April Since the first century, Christians have detected “seeds of the Word” in the surrounding culture. No matter how charred or distorted the fragments, we can always uncover inklings of the Gospel, which can then lead people to God. Through this evocative collection of essays, Father finds those “seeds” in today’s most popular films, books, and current events. How do Superman, Gran Torino, and The Hobbit illuminate the figure of Jesus? How does Bob Dylan convey the prophetic overtones of Jeremiah and Isaiah? Where can we detect the ripple of original sin in politics, sports, and the Internet culture? Finding the “seeds of the Word” requires a new vision. This book will train you to see. Great Books and God is an “open enrollment” book club. Members choose the books we read and can join at any time. If you have questions, contact Dean at [email protected] or just drop in on Tuesday, April 28th in the Parish Center at 6:30 p.m. for discussion and light snacks. Read the book. Bring a friend.

Marriage Please contact Mary Jo Polark ([email protected]) to discuss the celebration of the sacrament of marriage here at St. Vincent’s, or concerning preparation and prenuptial matters if you are getting married in another parish. For baptized Catholics, marriage is celebrated within a Catholic church in the presence of a priest or deacon. The first item to plan is the selection of a date and time. In order to celebrate the sacrament of marriage at St. Vincent, one needs to be a registered parishioner for four months prior to discussion of a date. DePaul University faculty, staff, students, and alumni may also celebrate their wedding here, provided either the bride, groom, or both are Roman Catholic, registered at a parish and actively engaged in the practice of their faith. Weddings are celebrated on Saturdays only, at 1:00 p.m. or 3:00 p.m. Weddings are not celebrated during the season of Lent, Holy Week or Saturdays that conflict with other parish events. Mary Jo confirms all reservations for weddings.
