FLYERS VS. HURRICANES This is the first of four games between the teams this season.

This year will be the first time since the 2015-16 season that the Flyers don’t play the Hurricanes in the month of April.

The Flyers dropped all four games against Carolina last year, marking the first time since the franchise relocated to North Carolina – and the first overall in 27 years – where the Flyesr did not earn at least a point in the season series. The Flyers were 0-3 vs. Hartford in both 1990-91 and 1991-92. Those two seasons and the 2013-14 season (0-2-0-2) are the only ones where the Flyers haven’t picked up at least one win in the season series.

2018-19 SEASON SERIES Monday, December 31, 2018 – Carolina 3, Flyers 1 at PNC Arena: The Hurricanes scored twice in the first 2:19 of the second period to seize control and take an eventual 3-1 win over the Flyers. Lucas Wallmark put Carolina on the board with 9:13 left in the first period, and then six seconds into the second period, Jordan Martinook grabbed a puck off the opening faceoff and put it home to make it 2-0. Andrei Svechnikov then made it a 3-0 game 2:19 into the period. Jake Voracek put the Flyers on the board 2:38 into the third period, but it was all the Flyers could get past Curtis McIlhinney on the game as they had 11 shots in the first period but only 12 over the final two. Carter Hart started and stopped seven of 10 in 22:19 before stepping aside for Michal Neuvirth, who stopped all 23 shots he saw in 36:15. Stars of the Game: 1 – Lucas Wallmark; 2 – Andrei Svechnikov; 3- Curtis McElhinney.

Thursday, January 3, 2019 – Carolina 5, Flyers 3 at Wells Fargo Center: The Flyers scored three times in the third period to turn a 4-0 deficit into a 4-3 score, but couldn’t find the equalizer in an eventual 5-3 setback. Carolina scored three times in the second period and then a fourth five minutes into the third, after which the Flyers got on the board with a power-play goal from Wayne Simmonds 6:17 into the third. Sean Couturier scored 1:06 later to make it 4-2, and then James van Riemsdyk tallied with 9:02 left to pull the Flyers within one. But a goal from Teuvo Teravainen with just over four minutes to play stalled the momentum and closed the scoring. Michal Neuvirth stopped 23 shots in the loss, while Petr Mrazek took the win with 33 saves. Stars of the Game: 1 – Teuvo Teravainen; 2 – Claude Giroux; 3 – Sebastien Aho.

Saturday, March 30, 2019 – Carolina 5, Flyers 2 at PNC Arena: The Hurricanes went 2-for-2 on the power play and rode that momentum to a 5-2 win. Claude Giroux opened the scoring 12:05 into the game, but after getting a power play shortly after that goal, the Hurricanes scored twice in 21 seconds – one from Teuvo Teravainen on the power play and one from Dougie Hamilton right afterward. Then with 8:03 left in the game, Justin Faulk picked up the other power play goal to make it 3-1. Oskar Lindblom notched a power play tally about a minute and a half later, but the Flyers couldn’t get anything else past Petr Mrazek, and Carolina added two empty-netters. Cam Talbot made his second start as a Flyer and made 27 saves, while Mrazek stopped 30. Stars of the Game: 1 – Dougie Hamilton; 2 – Petr Mrazek; 3 – Teuvo Teravainen.

Saturday, April 6, 2019 – Carolina 4, Flyers 3 at Wells Fargo Center: The Flyers rebounded from an early 2-0 deficit to tie the score at 3-3 in the second period, but Jordan Staal’s second-period goal ended up being the difference. Warren Foegele started off the scoring 9:20 into the first period and Justin Faulk added a second 2:09 later; after the Flyers got on the board with an Oskar Lindblom goal with 5:41 to play in the frame, Teuvo Teravainen made it 3-1 with 4:20 left in the period. The Flyers got the next two tallies, with Travis Konecny tallying 1:27 into the second followed by a power play goal from Sean Couturier just under five minutes later. Staal’s eventual game-winner came less than 90 seconds after that, and closed out the scoring. Carter Hart counted multiple spectacular saves among his 24, while Curtis McElhinney stopped 28. Stars of the Game: 1 – Jordan Staal; 2 – Teuvo Teravainen; 3 – Sean Couturier.

LAST GAME Saturday, November 2, 2019 – Toronto 4, Flyers 3 (SO) at Wells Fargo Center: A goal from Andreas Johnsson in the 11th shootout round finally decided the evening’s proceedings in favor of Toronto. The Flyers rebounded from a Kasperi Kapanen goal 5:55 into the contest by scoring the game’s next two, both on the power play – Ivan Provorov tied it up with 4:58 left in the first and then Claude Giroux made it 2-1 at the 3:12 mark of the second. Jason Spezza then tied things up with 2:05 left in the second. Travis Sanheim restored the lead with his first goal of the year 31 seconds into the third period, but Toronto answered with a Mitchell Marner goal at the 5:03 mark. There was no further scoring through regulation and overtime. Then in the shootout, each goaltender stopped the first seven shooters before the teams both scored in round eight – Travis Konecny for the Flyers and Spezza for the Leafs. Johnsson closed out the game three rounds later. Brian Elliott absorbed the SOL despite making 23 saves in regulation and overtime and nine of 11 in the shootout. Frederik Anderson earned the win with 37 saves in regulation/OT and 10 of 11 in the shootout. Stars of the Game: 1- Claude Giroux; 2 – Ivan Provorov; 3 – Jason Spezza.

NOTABLES The 11-round shootout was the second-longest the Flyers have had since the inception of the shootout in 2005-06. The franchise record is a 13-rounder on October 7, 2006 vs. the New York Rangers in a game the Rangers won 5-4; the Flyers were 0-for-13 in that game and the Rangers were 1-for-13.

Ivan Provorov had a goal and an assist for his 19th career multi-point game and third this season.

Claude Giroux was 15-for-19 (78.9 pct) on faceoffs while Kevin Hayes was 10-for-14 (71.4 pct).

NOTES OF THE NIGHT

November is the busiest month of the season for the Flyers with 16 games on the schedule. Half of those 16 games are comprised of four sets of back-to-back contests. The Flyers play 14 of the 16 games against the Eastern Conference and six of the 16 against the Metropolitan Division.

The Flyers continue to allow the fewest shots per game in the league at 27.9. Their shots-for average of 35.0 is second-most in the league.

The Flyers also continue to lead the league in faceoff percentage at 56.3. Sean Couturier (64.3) and Claude Giroux (63.5) continue to lead the league in individual percentage among the 132 players who have taken at least 80 faceoffs on the year.

Despite being one of only a handful of teams to have played 13 or fewer games this season, the Flyers are tied for third in the NHL in goals scored in the third period with 20.

Travis Konecny has a point in 10 of the 13 games this season, including four multi-point games. He started the season with a four- game point streak, becoming the fourth-youngest Flyer to do so and the youngest since Eric Lindros in 1995-96. He then started a five- game streak that came to an end last Tuesday.

THE GANG GETS INVINCIBLE Entering Carolina’s game against Philadelphia on 12/31/18, the two teams held identical records of 15-17-5, sitting 10 points behind MTL for the final Eastern Conference wild card spot. The Hurricanes won that game 3-1, kicking off a stretch of 45 games to close the regular season where the team posted a 31-12-2 record and clinched Carolina’s first postseason appearance since 2009.

GUN FEVER TOO: STILL HOT The Hurricanes have scored at least two goals in all 14 games they have played this season. This ties the second-longest season- opening streak of games with at least two goals scored in franchise history. Carolina last scored at least two goals in each of their first 14 games in 2005-06, earning an 11-2-1 record in the process. The franchise record for consecutive games with at least two goals scored to open a season was set by the 1986-87 Whalers, who scored at least two goals in each of their first 15 games, posting a 7-5-3 record in those games.

THE GANG GOES ON FAMILY FIGHT Jordan Staal is one goal shy of becoming the 17th skater in franchise history to score 100 career Hurricanes goals. His brother Eric ranks second in franchise history with 322 goals, and one more goal for Jordan would make the Staals the ninth pair of brothers in NHL history to each score at least 100 goals with the same franchise, per NHL Stats.

Brothers to score 100 goals for the same franchise, NHL history: Doug Bentley (217) and Max Bentley (109) – CHI Bill Cook (228) and Fred Cook (154) – NYR Bobby Hull (604) and Dennis Hull (298) – CHI Peter Mahovlich (223) and Frank Mahovlich (129) – MTL Maurice Richard (544) and Henri Richard (358) – MTL Daniel Sedin (393) and Henrik Sedin (240) – VAN Peter Stastny (380) and Anton Stastny (252) – QUE Brent Sutter (287) and Duane Sutter (121) – NYI

THE NIGHTMAN COMETH Andrei Svechnikov posted an assist vs. NJD (11/2) to extend his point streak to four games (10/26-11/2: 5g, 2a), tying his career-long point streak. He has previously recorded a point in four straight games twice in his NHL career, including earlier this season from 10/5- 10/11 (1g, 7a). Svechnikov has now registered 15 points in 14 games this season (6g, 9a), after needing 30 games to reach 15 points last season. His first three games of his current point streak were all multi-point games, giving him seven multi-point games on the season. Svechnikov became just the fourth teenager in NHL history to record seven multi-point games in his team’s first 13 games of a season, joining Wayne Gretzky (1980-81 with EDM), Steve Yzerman (1984-85 with DET) and Sidney Crosby (2006-07 with PIT).

THE GANG GETS A NEW MEMBER Erik Haula tallied two points (1g, 1a) vs. NJD (11/2), including his team-leading eighth goal of the season, marking the 29th multi-point game of his NHL career and his first with Carolina. Haula has scored eight goals through 14 games this season, after needing 21 games to score eight goals in 2017-18 when he recorded a career-high 29 goals with VGK.

THUNDER GUN EXPRESS Dougie Hamilton was held without a point vs. NJD (11/2), ending his career-long six-game point streak (10/16-11/1: 2g, 6a). He has tallied a team-leading 16 points (6g, 10a) through 14 games, including six power-play points (1g, 5a). In 2016-17, when Hamilton recorded a career-high 50 points (13g, 37a) with CGY, he recorded his 16th point in his 31st game.

THE GANG BUYS A BOAT Sebastian Aho posted an assist vs. NJD (11/2) and has now registered nine points in his last eight games (10/15-11/2: 4g, 5a) after posting one point in his first six games this season (10/3-10/12: 1g).

THE WORLD SERIES DEFENSE Dougie Hamilton ranks second among NHL defensemen in goals this season with six, after finishing second among NHL blueliners in 2018-19 (18) and tying for the league lead in 2017-18 (17). Since the beginning of the 2017-18 season, Hamilton has scored six more goals (41) than any other defenseman in the NHL.

Most goals by a defenseman since the start of the 2017-18 season: Dougie Hamilton (CGY/CAR) – 41 John Carlson (WSH) –35 Roman Josi (NSH) – 34 Mark Giordano (CGY) – 33 Alex Pietrangelo (STL) – 33

THE GANG SAVES THE DAY Carolina has posted a 4-2-0 record when trailing after two periods this season for a league-leading .667 points percentage in the situation. Only WPG has also recorded four wins when trailing after two in 2019-20, while 17 NHL teams have yet to record a win when losing entering the third period this season. Last season, the Hurricanes posted a 3-20-3 record when trailing after two periods.
