2011 Oia Rendezvous® 2011 OIA RENDEZVOUS ® October 4 – 6 | Portland, OR The Nines (on Pioneer Square) AN OUTDOOR INDUSTRY ASSOCIATION® EVENT TABLE OF CONTENTS Rendezvous 2011 Table of Contents Welcome 3 Conference Highlights 4 Schedule at a Glance 6 Daily Schedule of Events Tuesday 8 Wednesday 10 Thursday 24 Sponsor Profiles 32 OIA Today 39 PAGE 2 OUTDOOR INDUSTRY ASSOCIATION Rendezvous 2011 WELCOME Dear Colleagues, Friends and Visitors: Welcome to the 2011 OIA Rendezvous, and thank you for taking the time to attend. We are celebrating 16 years since the industry’s first gathering and the development of Rendezvous into the premier educational conference for outdoor industry executives in North America. This year, we will explore the world of innovation and dig into leading- edge products, processes and trends that are becoming increasingly important to the marketplace. Despite the uncertainty that consumers and the mass retail community seem to express, the outdoor recreation economy continues to grow. Close-to-home activities endure as jobs, disposable income and free time are in shorter supply than they’ve been in a long time. Purchases of apparel, footwear and gear persist as consumers are investing their precious dollars in products that last. This positive trend seems to be continuing for the full spectrum of specialty businesses that serve recreationists who aspire to be more active in the great outdoors. During the conference, we will look into the future and examine new trends, emerging retail technologies, economic futures and the relationship consumers are developing with outdoor brands to sustain their lifestyle choices. The information and topics explored this week will deepen our understanding of emerging issues that directly impact outdoor businesses, and we encourage all of you to absorb as much from the conference discussions as you can. While the themes of the conference have expanded, so have the networking opportunities to connect with fellow decision-makers. Join us for a tour of Portland’s Retail Trail and experience an Urban Kampground courtesy of KOA. Lastly, the OIA Rendezvous Timberland Service Project will see five different service project teams at work, making a sizable outdoor impact across the city. The diversity of learning and service opportunities you will discover at the 2011 OIA Rendezvous provides a taste of the complex challenges companies now face in connecting to today’s outdoor consumer. It is important to the future development of the outdoor industry that executive leaders better understand and anticipate these shifts, so we’re excited that you’re here and invested in that future with us. You’re in the right place, with the right crowd, to prepare for an innovative, boundary- breaking 2012. Welcome to Portland! LaRae Marsik VP Business Intelligence Outdoor Industry Association PAGE 3 CONFERENCE HIGHLIGHTS Rendezvous 2011 Conference Highlights OIA Rendezvous Timberland Service Projects Repairing trails and bridges; removing invasive weeds; building fences, rock walls and even a batter’s box and pitcher’s mound are just some of the much-needed community projects awaiting volunteers during this year’s OIA Rendezvous Timberland Service Projects at Forest Park Conservancy, Wapato Access Greenway, Portland Children’s Museum, Audubon Society of Portland and Portland Parks & Recreation – Westmoreland Park. Special thanks to Timberland for sponsoring 13 years of Rendezvous service projects. The Port of Portland will be transporting teams to the projects and back to the post project “rally” in Pioneer Square where we will celebrate with local brews and evol Burritos. KOA Urban Kampground and The Retail Trail While small teams adventure through a rich brick-and-mortar retail forest of The Pearl in downtown Portland, an outdoor-inspired Urban Kampground party will be in full swing at the final destination. If you’re up for it, join a team for an interactive hike through retail locations and enjoy in-store experiences designed specifically for this evening. Prizes await those teams that complete the entire trail. If you just want to share campfire stories, the Urban Kampground festivities will include great food, beer, music and conversation – a true taste of Portland. Session Recordings Sessions marked with this icon are being recorded and will be available to Rendezvous attendees via outdoorindustry.org/rendezvous after the conference. You will need to enter username: Portland and password: Innovation to access them. Twitter Follow the conference conversation and post your own observations using the Twitter hashtag #RV2011. PAGE 4 OUTDOOR INDUSTRY ASSOCIATION Rendezvous 2011 CONFERENCE HIGHLIGHTS Reducing Our Impact In partnership with the Bonneville Environmental Foundation (BEF), OIA has taken strides to make the 2011 OIA Rendezvous environmentally sustainable. Verified Carbon Offsets purchased from BEF will offset the carbon emissions associated with all travel of Rendezvous participants to and from the event, as well as the carbon emissions associated with participants’ guest hotel rooms. Water Restoration Certificates purchased from BEF will restore water to critically dewatered rivers and streams, balancing the water footprint of attendee usage at the event hotels. In addition, Columbia Sportswear Company is pleased to provide free public transportation via TriMet (MAX) passes to OIA Rendezvous attendees. TriMet provides public transportation in the Portland, Oregon, metropolitan area. Pick up your MAX passes at one of the two Columbia Sportswear Stores located at the Portland Airport or at 911 SW Broadway (the Columbia Pioneer Square store). Passes are limited to two per participant while supplies last. • Dreams and Reality in the Great Outdoors
School of Business STOCKHOLM UNIVERSITY Master Thesis Spring Semester 2006 Date 2006-06-05 Dreams and Reality in the Great Outdoors A study of lifestyle marketing in the outdoor industry in Sweden Author: Enri Bimbashi Supervisor: Hans Rämö Assistant Professor PhD Summary Much of what is on sale on the shelves of outdoor shops today will mainly be used in the less extreme environment of our “urban jungle”. The red or navy anoraks of days past have been replaced by stylish, lightweight and high-tech pieces of clothing in exotic materials and colors that may never set foot on top of a mountain. Yet images of climbers, skiers or hikers still grace the pages of catalogs and advertisements aimed at consumers that are often perceived as “buying into the lifestyle”. The purpose of this study is to explore the implications of image- driven marketing strategies in the outdoor industry in Sweden, and the relevance of lifestyle in creating value in this industry. To deal with the complexity and ambiguity of this issue I have conducted a qualitative study based on interviews with seven respondents in managerial positions within the outdoor industry. I have also analyzed a number of advertisements and product catalogs from outdoor firms that illustrate, support and sometimes challenge the statements of the respondents. This material has been interpreted with a hermeneutic approach, based on a conceptual framework that includes semiotics, consumer behavior and lifestyle marketing theories. Based on the study’s findings, it can be concluded that marketing based on signification and imagery is steadily growing in relevance in the outdoor industry, recognizing the perceived value of outdoor products as signs or ways to create and communicate meaning among consumers.
