FROM: Junichi Takada General Manager, Media & Publicity Department, THE JAPAN RACING ASSOCIATION (JRA) DATE: November 10, 2019 SUBJECT: RESULT OF THE 44TH QUEEN ELIZABETH II CUP (G1) The Queen Elizabeth II Cup was established in 1976 to facilitate friendly relations between Japan and England, in commemoration of Her Excellency’s visit to Japan in 1975. The race initially started as a 2,400-meter race and the last leg of the “Triple Crown for three-year-old fillies,” but became a 2,200-meter race for fillies and mares of three-year-old and up from 1996. Tigertail (FR, by Priolo) and Ana Marie (FR, by Anabaa) were the first two foreign contestants to run in 2003—four years after its designation as an international event in 1999—and finished third and eighth, respectively. Shalanaya (IRE, by Lomitas) finished fourth in 2009 before Edward Dunlop-trained Snow Fairy (IRE, by Intikhab) became the first foreign runner to win back-to-back G1 titles in 2010 and 2011. Last year’s winner and JRA’s Best Older Filly or Mare Lys Gracieux (JPN, M5, by Heart’s Cry) has thrived both within and outside Japan this season, claiming the Takarazuka Kinen (G1, 2,200m) in June and the Australian prestigious Cox Plate (G1, 2,040m) in October and finishing within the money in her two other starts in Japan and Hong Kong. Scarlet Color, an improving four-year-old came off her first grade-race victory in the main prep for four-year-old and up fillies/mares, the Fuchu Himba Stakes (G2, 1,800m; Oct.14).

We just can=t run him on Saturday with being a little off his game.@ The defection of the GI Arkansas Derby runner-up will allow GII Remsen S. winner Brooklyn Strong (Wicked Strong) to enter the Derby field. The Mark Schwartz colorbearer, most recently fifth in the Apr. 3 GII Wood Memorial, is scheduled to work at Parx Monday morning for trainer Daniel Velazquez and could ship into Churchill Downs Tuesday morning if all goes well. • The 80Th Yushun Himba
FROM: Junichi Takada General Manager, Media & Publicity Department, THE JAPAN RACING ASSOCIATION (JRA) DATE: May 19, 2019 SUBJECT: RESULT OF THE 80TH YUSHUN HIMBA (JAPANESE OAKS, G1) The Japanese version of the prestigious British Oaks, the Yushun Himba was established in 1938 and contested among runners limited to home-bred three-year-old fillies. Initially called the “Hanshin Yushun Himba” and held during the fall season at Hanshin Racecourse, the race acquired its current status as the Japanese Oaks upon changing its venue to Tokyo Racecourse in 1946. The race was also shifted to the spring season, being the richest in prize money and longest in distance among the current JRA races limited to fillies/mares. The Yushun Himba opened its door to foreign-bred runners in 2003 and acquired international G1 status in 2010, and the first three finishers of this race are eligible to start in the French G1 Prix Vermeille (2,400m) beginning this year, free of charge to enter and with additional support for transportation. While the Oka Sho (Japanese 1000 Guineas, G1, 1,600m) serves in gauging the speed potentials in the future broodmares, the Yushun Himba is a championship race in which to discover the added quality of stamina as well as speed, and winners of this race are highly rated as broodmares upon retirement to stud. Recent winners included fillies/mares that became high profile G1 winners. Last year’s winner Almond Eye (JPN, by Lord Kanaloa) went on to capture the Shuka Sho (G1, 2,000m) that autumn to become the fifth filly to sweep the Triple Crown for fillies, the first since Gentildonna (JPN, by Deep Impact).

  • Exclusive Topics for Horse Racing in Japan - Spring Edition
Exclusive Topics for Horse Racing in Japan - Spring Edition - March 2019 The Japan Racing Association The JRA’s 2019 horse racing season will start in earnest with the three-year-old classic trials in March as established horses begin to prepare towards the spring G1 events. In this special Spring edition of our international newsletter, we are pleased to bring you up to date on the progress of last year’s stars and this season’s key runners, part of our ongoing effort to support your reporting of JRA events. High Expectations for Almond Eye’s Further Success Challenges abroad by Japanese-trained horses resulted in one or more G1 titles every year from 2011 to 2017, but expectations are high for renewed success this spring when a number of top Japanese runners will seek success against international competitors. The focus is centered on Almond Eye (JPN, F4, by Lord Kanaloa), JRA’s 2018 Horse of the Year and winner of the fillies’ Triple Crown, who is slated to run in the Dubai Turf (G1, 1,800m) on March 30. Trainer Sakae Kunieda explained the reason why he chose the Dubai Turf instead of the Dubai Sheema Classic (G1, 2,410m), stating that “the filly is more comfortable at 1,800 meters” and that “Japanese runners have come up with favorable results at this distance in the past three Dubai Turf races, producing two wins and a second.” The coming Dubai Turf will be Almond Eye’s first start in four months, since she claimed the Japan Cup (G1, 2,400m) in a record 2:20.6.
