When searching for schools to apply to, it’s important to know what your options are.

In Philadelphia, there are three main types of schools. Among these three types, there are more than 100 high school options. Each school type has different admission policies.

District schools Your student is always guaranteed a spot in their neighborhood District high school. There are also citywide and special-admission District high schools that you can apply to.

Charter schools Charter schools are independently run public schools that often select students from a lottery. Renaissance charter schools give preference to students from a specific neighborhood.

Private schools Private schools almost always charge tuition. They include Catholic schools, other religious schools and independent nonreligious schools. Many offer financial aid.

TIP Don’t limit yourself! You can apply to more than one type of school, and applying does not necessarily mean your child must attend that school if they are admitted. You have the option of 2 applying to multiple types of schools, and then making your choice later.

2019-HSToolkit-PRINTER-073119_CC2019_crw1.indd 2 8/2/19 5:07 PM District schools The School District of Philadelphia offers many great public high school options. You are allowed to select up to five options, so it’s important to think carefully about where to apply. Use the lists below as a starting point.

TIP Pay attention to a school’s grade levels — you often have a higher chance of admission at the lowest one. For example, if a school serving grades 6–12 already has an 8th-grade class, it may have limited spaces for new 9th graders to enroll; however, there may be more open spaces in the 6th grade. 3

2019-HSToolkit-PRINTER-073119_CC2019_crw1.indd 4 8/2/19 5:07 PM Private schools Private schools come in many forms. The largest provider of private school education is the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, which operates the majority of the area’s Catholic high schools. The cost of attending a private school is different for each school. Some schools provide financial aid to most or all of their families.

TIP Don’t let a school’s “sticker price” scare you off. Many of schools with the highest tuition also offer the most generous financial aid. If you’re interested in a school, set up a time to discuss your options with the admissions director. Schools usually award financial aid on a rolling basis, so apply for aid early. 5

1-2 years before high school DO YOUR RESEARCH AND VISIT SCHOOLS For All Schools • Visit greatphillyschools.org or use the GreatPhillySchools High School Guide to start searching for schools. • Attend the Philly High School Fair on September 20–21, 2019, at the PA Convention Center to compare over 100 high school options in person, meet school representatives, and apply to schools on site! More information is available at phillyhighschoolfair.com. • Attend information sessions and open houses. For specific dates, check the Event Calendar atbit.ly/eventsGPS . • Ask schools that you’re interested in if they allow interested students to schedule a “shadow day.” • Visit schools that you’re interested in. September-November of 8th grade APPLY TO DISTRICT, CHARTER AND PRIVATE SCHOOLS For District Schools • It’s time to apply! Follow these steps to submit your application. 1. The District’s application process opens on September 20, 2019. Fill out the District High School Selection application at schoolselect.philasd.org. You can select no more than 5 schools, so choose wisely! 2. In order to submit your application, you must create a Parent & Family Portal account (see page 17). We suggest creating one no later than October 25, 2019, because it can take up to 48 hours to activate. To create an account, visit signup.philasd.org. You will need your student’s ID number (if coming from a District school), a personal email address, and access to the phone number on file at your student’s school. 3. The deadline to apply to any District school is November 1, 2019, at 5 p.m. • If applicable, attend District special-admission interviews and submit additional materials to schools directly.

For Charter Schools • All schools participating in Apply Philly Charter will begin accepting applications through applyphillycharter. org on September 20, 2019. For a full list of charter schools participating in Apply Philly Charter, see page 20. • Schools not participating in Apply Philly Charter may also begin accepting applications during this time.

For Private Schools • Learn more about how to apply to specific private schools by visiting their school profiles at greatphillyschools.org and begin submitting applications. • Complete financial aid applications. Many schools have application fees. If you cannot afford a fee, request a waiver. • Take entrance and scholarship exams (if applicable).

TIP When selecting schools to apply to during the District School Selection process, don’t list your neighborhood school as one of your choices. You are already guaranteed a seat there and do not 6 need to apply.
