  • Rabindranath Tagore's Model of Rural Reconstruction: a Review
[ VOLUME 5 I ISSUE 4 I OCT.– DEC. 2018] E ISSN 2348 –1269, PRINT ISSN 2349-5138 Rabindranath Tagore’s Model of Rural Reconstruction: A review Dr. Madhumita Chattopadhyay Assistant Professor in English, B.Ed. Department, Gobardanga Hindu College (affiliated to West Bengal State University), P.O. Khantura, Dist- 24 Parganas North, West Bengal, PIN – 743273. Received: July 07, 2018 Accepted: August 17, 2018 ABSTRACT Rabindranath Tagore’s unique venture on rural reconstruction at Silaidaha-Patisar and at Sriniketan was a pioneering work carried out by him with the motto of the wholesome development of the community life of village people through education, training, healthcare, sanitation, modern and scientific agricultural production, revival of traditional arts and crafts and organizing fairs and festivities in daily life. He believed that through self-help, self-initiation and self-reliance, village people will be able to help each other in their cooperative living and become able to prepare the ground work for building the nation as an independent country in the true sense. His model of rural reconstruction is the torch-bearer of so many projects in independent India. His principles associated with this programme are still relevant in the present day world, but is not out of criticism. The need is to make critical analysis and throw new lights on this esteemed model so that new programmes can be undertaken based on this to achieve ‘life in its completeness’ among rural population in India. Keywords: Rural reconstruction, cooperative effort, community development. Introduction Rathindranath Tagore once said, his father was “a poet who was an indefatigable man of action” and “his greatest poem is the life he has lived”.

Welcome to Falakata College Falakata , Alipurduar Accredited by NAAC with B+ [ website: www.falakataollege.org.in , www.admissionfalakatacollege.org.in ] Falakata College was established on 19th September, 1981. Since then it has remained both in the field of Education and Sports, as one of the important College of North Bengal. It is a Government aided Degree College, affiliated to the University of North Bengal and enlisted Under Section 2 (f) and 12 (B) of the U.G.C. Act Managed by a Governing Body under the control of Directorate of Public Instruction, West Bengal. The College is situated in Falakata, about 1 k.m. away from the National Highway 31. The College Campus is being divided into two parts, a three storied new building and the other is the old two storied building, midst which there is a green playground. The campus is unique for its spacious green forest situated behind the old building. The College has a friendly and congenial ambience for teaching and learning. Under the British Rule Falakata was a Sub-divisional town but after independence, the centre of gravity has been shifted to Alipurduar. As a result, the old glory of Falakata decreased day by day. Surrounded by tea gardens and forests, far away from the District town Alipurduar, the people of Falakata found it very difficult to keep in touch with Higher Education. It was an agriculture based area majority of the population belonged to backward scheduled class and scheduled tribes. Though the students were eager to get them admitted into Colleges but it was beyond their capacity.

  • Regional Variations of Social Sector Development: District Level Study of West Bengal State
Artha Vijnana Vol. LII, No. 1, March 2010, pp. 27-47 Regional Variations of Social Sector Development: District Level Study of West Bengal State Satyen Sarkar The study makes an attempt to examine the inter-district disparities in social sector and their impact on social development through cross-sectional data and inter-temporal analysis of 18 districts in West Bengal. Social sector development is directly related to broader enhancement of human well-being and quality of life. This includes not only an adequate level of consumption of food and other consumer goods but also access to basic social services, especially education, health, drinking water facilities and basic sanitation. The study reveals that two dimensions come out to be meaningful, namely, quantitative and qualitative dimensional development. The study finds that there are sharp disparities among the districts in the State of West Bengal. I Introduction Social sector development acquires a very important role in a developing economy as it performs the task of development of human resources through education and health. Social sector development is directly related with broader enhancement of human well-being and quality of life. This includes not only adequate level of consumption of food and other consumer goods but also access to basic social services, especially education, health, drinking water facilities and basic sanitation. Social development programmes and their implementation fall largely under the jurisdiction of the State Government. Nevertheless, the Central Government supports the State Government’s efforts by making additional resources available for specific programmes through centrally, sponsored schemes, additional central assistance and special central assistance.
