The Class of 2011 Barry Weisbord & Richard Santulli Weisbord, who owned Safely Kept with Santulli and has been friends with her trainer, Alan Goldberg, since his college days, said, “This HALL OF FAME INDUCTIONS experience changed our lives. It was incredible. For three years, we 2011 travelled from track to track, watching her win, picking up trophies and enjoying each other’s company. It was the most amazing run. And we’ve been together ever since.” Close to tears as he described his Safely Kept partner, Weisbord said of Santulli, “He is a generous, genuine, genius of a human being. Knowing him has been one of the great privileges of my life.”

Bobby Flay Gives Keynote Address “A few people have asked, ‘why Bobby Flay--why was he asked to give the keynote speech?’ It’s a really good question, actually--the truth is, when I heard that Safely Kept was among the class, I asked to be asked. Barry Weisbord and Rich Santulli and Al Goldberg, they are all very special to me. Al trained my first stakes winner, Gilded Gold; Rich gave me the chance to take a share in Wonder Again and get my first taste of the Breeders’ Cup; and Barry is my most trusted friend and Thoroughbred advisor. He spends countless hours at the sales, trying to keep me from bidding on horses I have no business trying to own-- sometimes with success. They introduced me to the game in the right way. I wanted to pay homage to them on their special day,” said Flay. Jerry Hollendorfer & Jay Privman Jerry Hollendorfer took the time to name every owner who helped him on his way to the Hall of Fame, with a special nod to Jerry Dutton and Jerry Fanning, “for helping me learn the ropes.” But it wasn’t until he started to list the names of his crew back at the barn that he choked up. “You can’t get here without these people,” Hollendorfer said. As for his plaque, he remarked, “I dedicate this to all of the racing fans across America.” He got a standing O.

D. Wayne Lukas accepts for Open Mind Lukas remarked that owner Eugene Klein had “the Midas touch,” adding, “If he bought a burro, it would be the fastest burro in the world.” As for how Klein came to own Open Mind, Lukas said that, after the yearling sales were over, he would meet with his owners, and the details of each purchase would be on 3x5 cards. The cards would go in the center of a table, and the owners would trade back and forth until satisfied with their new acquisitions. In 1987, there were two cards left when the dealing was done--including Open Mind’s, a $150,000 FTSAUG yearling. Lukas, with the blessing of his owners, was going to Jerry Bailey & Eddie Maple keep them, but it wasn’t to be. “As I reached out to those cards in front of me, Gene said, ‘Ah hell, they didn’t cost that much. I’ll take ‘em.”

‘MIDNIGHT’ READY TO SHINE IN LA JOLLA The absence of Mr. Commons (Artie Schiller) makes this an interesting test of sophomore turfers, and many will take a stand against the likely favorite Midnight Interlude. This year=s GI Santa Anita Derby winner was a flop in the GI Kentucky Derby and GI Preakness S., beating a total of four horses, but he got back to his winning ways last time out, besting Surrey Star by a neck at level weights in the Tsunami Slew S. on the Hollywood turf June 17.
