For any reuse or redistribution, researchers must make clear to others the licence terms of this work. 3 Abstract Parity games are 2-person, 0-sum, graph-based, and determined games that form an important foundational concept in formal methods (see e.g., [Zie98]), and their exact computational complexity has been an open prob- lem for over twenty years now. In this thesis, we study algorithms that solve parity games in that they determine which nodes are won by which player, and where such decisions are supported with winning strategies. We modify and so improve a known algorithm but also propose new algorithmic approaches to solving parity games and to understanding their descriptive complexity. -

The goal is to show that the rules of justice are consistent with rationality. The two most important bargaining theories of justice are David Gauthier’s and those that use the Nash’s bargaining solution. I argue that both of these approaches are fatally undermined by their reliance on a symmetry condition. Symmetry is a substantive constraint, not an implication of rationality. I argue that using symmetry to generate uniqueness undermines the goal of bargaining theories of justice. Even those who did not explicitly use a bargaining problem as their model, most notably Rawls, incorporated many of the concepts and techniques from bargaining theories into their understanding of what a theory of justice should look like. This allowed them to use the powerful tools of game theory to justify their various theories of distributive justice. The debates between partisans of different theories of distributive justice has tended to be over the respective benefits of each particular bargaining solution and whether or not the solution to the bargaining problem matches our pre-theoretical intuitions about justice. Learning Board Game Rules from an Instruction Manual Chad Mills A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science University of Washington 2013 Committee: Gina-Anne Levow Fei Xia Program Authorized to Offer Degree: Linguistics – Computational Linguistics ©Copyright 2013 Chad Mills University of Washington Abstract Learning Board Game Rules from an Instruction Manual Chad Mills Chair of the Supervisory Committee: Professor Gina-Anne Levow Department of Linguistics Board game rulebooks offer a convenient scenario for extracting a systematic logical structure from a passage of text since the mechanisms by which board game pieces interact must be fully specified in the rulebook and outside world knowledge is irrelevant to gameplay. A representation was proposed for representing a game’s rules with a tree structure of logically-connected rules, and this problem was shown to be one of a generalized class of problems in mapping text to a hierarchical, logical structure. Then a keyword-based entity- and relation-extraction system was proposed for mapping rulebook text into the corresponding logical representation, which achieved an f-measure of 11% with a high recall but very low precision, due in part to many statements in the rulebook offering strategic advice or elaboration and causing spurious rules to be proposed based on keyword matches. The keyword-based approach was compared to a machine learning approach, and the former dominated with nearly twenty times better precision at the same level of recall. This was due to the large number of rule classes to extract and the relatively small data set given this is a new problem area and all data had to be manually annotated. -

An unceasing problem of our prevailing society is the fair division of goods. The problem of proportional cake cutting focuses on dividing a heterogeneous and divisible resource, the cake, among n players who value pieces according to their own measure function. The goal is to assign each player a not necessarily connected part of the cake that the player evaluates at least as much as her proportional share. In this article, we investigate the problem of proportional division with unequal shares, where each player is entitled to receive a predetermined portion of the cake. Our main contribution is threefold. First we present a protocol for integer demands, which delivers a proportional solution in fewer queries than all known proto- cols. -

A goal of this study was to remedy this gap by including factors at the individual, organizational, and decision context level that affect escalation. Furthermore, to my knowledge there is no other escalation research that has included both an economic and a human resources (HR) decision scenario. A significant contribution of this study was the results showing these two types of scenarios have different, and sometimes opposing, outcomes. In the economic context, sunk costs were positively related to escalation, but the relationship was inversed in the HR context. Additionally, facets of neuroticism and openness to experience were related to escalation in the economic context, but no such relationships were present in the HR context. Openness to experience moderated the relationship between organizational support and escalation. The results in the HR context have practical implications regarding how managers select, train, promote, and terminate employees. Furthermore, the differential outcomes in the economic and HR contexts provide a first step in expanding the theoretical implications of varying contexts and their influence on escalation. -

Survey of the Computational Complexity of Finding a Nash Equilibrium Valerie Ishida 22 April 2009 1 Abstract This survey reviews the complexity classes of interest for describing the problem of finding a Nash Equilibrium, the reductions that led to the conclusion that finding a Nash Equilibrium of a game in the normal form is PPAD-complete, and the reduction from a succinct game with a nice expected utility function to finding a Nash Equilibrium in a normal form game with two players. 2 Introduction 2.1 Motivation For many years it was unknown whether a Nash Equilibrium of a normal form game could be found in polynomial time. The motivation for being able to due so is to find game solutions that people are satisfied with. Consider an entertaining game that some friends are playing. If there is a set of strategies that constitutes and equilibrium each person will probably be satisfied. Likewise if financial games such as auctions could be solved in polynomial time in a way that all of the participates were satisfied that they could not do any better given the situation, then that would be great. There has been much progress made in the last fifty years toward finding the complexity of this problem. It turns out to be a hard problem unless PPAD = FP. This survey reviews the complexity classes of interest for describing the prob- lem of finding a Nash Equilibrium, the reductions that led to the conclusion that finding a Nash Equilibrium of a game in the normal form is PPAD-complete, and the reduction from a succinct game with a nice expected utility function to finding a Nash Equilibrium in a normal form game with two players. -

Introduction The dollar auction, first described by Shubik1, is a classic example of an escalation of commitment or entrapment scenario described by von Neuman2 and Campbell3. Specifically, the dollar auction is a logical game played with multiple players. The game leader auctions a dollar, and the two or more players bid on it. The winner pays their bet and gets the dollar; the second highest bidder pays their bet and gets nothing. In practice, once people begin bidding, they will escalate their commitment (increase their bids). Often, the bids build up long past the point when either player could gain anything from winning. The game model is similar to the War of Attrition game and the All-pay Auction. In escalation of commitment scenarios, decision makers initially commit resources—money, time, reputation, etc.—in order to achieve some goal or goals. After the initial resource commitment, decision makers must repeatedly choose whether to allocate further resources under uncertainty and after receiving negative feedback about prior resource allocations. Escalation of commitment eludes explanation by traditional economics since traditional microeconomics supposes that decision makers maximize expected utility, i.e., microeconomics predicts that rational decision makers will choose the option with the highest utility, where utility equals the probability of an expected outcome multiplied by the value assigned to the outcome by the decision maker. According to accounting and economics texts normative criteria for investments dictate that one should invest resources only when marginal (future) benefits exceed marginal costs.
