As Haiti Faces Uncertainty, Dismay in Brooklyn’s ‘Little Haiti’ By Clifford Michel and Aria Velasquez THE CITY New York advocacy groups and elected offi- cials — many of them in Brooklyn, site of the na- tion’s largest Haitian immigrant community after Florida — are pushing the Biden administration to ease deportations and quickly provide protected status for Haitian nationals following the assassi- nation of President Jovenel Moïse. U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Alejan- dro Mayorkas announced an 18-month extension of what’s called Temporary Protected Status for 55,000 Haitian nationals in May. But the federal government has yet to publish details on how to apply for TPS in its Federal Register, leaving po- tential applicants in the lurch. “The situation on the ground in Haiti has been this frightful and this uncertain and quite frank- ly really dangerous for the past several months,” said Haddy Gassama, director of policy and ad- vocacy at UndocuBlack Network. “With what we imagine to be the exacerbation of all these danger- ous conditions with the assassination of the presi- dent, everything that we’ve been saying is still in existence and is probably only going to get worse unfortunately.” Meanwhile, the Biden administration has al- ready deported more Haitians in the early months of 2021 than former President Donald Trump did in all of 2020, according to a joint report by the UndocuBlack network, Haitian Bridge Alliance and the Quixote Center. Advocates point to the administration’s con- tinued use of so-called Title 42 of the Unit- ed States Code, which allows the U.S. to deport asylum seekers without a trial or hearing due to COVID-19 related health concerns. Friday, July 16, 2021 • BQ Daily Eagle • 3 uest Editorial Opinions G High-tide flood risk is accelerating, putting coastal economies at risk By Renee Collini The Conversation As sea level rises, it can be easy to miss the subtlety of higher water. It’s much harder to over- look saltwater more frequently flooding streets, impeding daily life and making existing problems worse. The frequency of high-tide flooding along the U.S. coasts has doubled since 2000, and it’s ex- pected to increase five to 15 times more in the next 30 years, the National Oceanic and Atmospher- ic Administration warns in a new report released July 14, 2021. I work with coastal communities that are fac- ing the risks of rising seas as they try to avoid pre- ventable damages and costs, such as infrastructure failures and falling property values. Information like the NOAA report is critical to helping these communities succeed. Last year, the U.S. averaged four days of high-tide flooding, but that number doesn’t tell the whole story – regionally, several areas saw far more. There were record-breaking numbers of high-tide flooding days in 2020 along the Gulf of Mexico and southeast Atlantic coasts. The city of Bay St. Louis, Mississippi, jumped from three days of high-tide flooding in 2000 to 22 days in 2020. NOAA’s annual high-tide flooding report projects a national average of three to seven days of high-tide flooding this year, again with dif- ferences expected regionally. The western Gulf Coast, including Texas and Louisiana, is expect- ed to see the most tidal flooding days, ranging be- tween seven and 15 days. The northeast Atlantic is projected to have six to 11 days of high-tide flood- ing. The Pacific Coast is projected to range be- tween 3 and 7 days, but with more flood days far- ther north. 6 • BQ Daily Eagle • Friday, July 16, 2021 Let Us Tell the World Your Food Story

We make memories over food. We tell over a good meal. But sometimes the meal is a story. And sometimes, it’s so much more. Restaurants are a family’s LEGACY, a chef’s PASSION, a business owner’s PRIDE.

If you own a restaurant in Brooklyn and would like to find out more, please contact: Jen Hopewell: [email protected]

Our flexible plan allows you to reach and engage our readers at just $20/cpm. You can choose how many people you'd like to reach and test your results without breaking the bank.

We use a combination of print, websites, and newsletters to reach the audience most responsive to you.

Reach out to me and simply describe how many you would like to reach in which zip code (or neighborhood). Remember, the cost will be $20 per thousand. You can test the results very inexpensively.

We look forward to telling your story in a concentrated direct marketing appeal.
