As long as I can remember dogs have been a great part of my life. My love of Cavaliers started in grade school where I meet Jackie Hahn who had just moved to California from England. Soon thereafter on a trip to England with Jackie I met my first Cavalier, a Tri owned by her aunt. My dream came true in 1983 when David and I adopted our very first Cavalier, a tri boy Ravenrush Already. Soon he was followed by a female Maxholt Secret Image. Then came the love of my life Kindrum Savanah of Crossbow who produce many champions and champion grandchildren. This followed with many more wonderful and great Cavaliers, a RBIS at CKCSC National Specialty with Ricksbury Wilma of Crossbow was a lifetime memory. I have been showing for over 30 years. I have judge many regional shows as well judging at the CKCSC National Specialty, and CKCSC National Trudy Albrecht Rally Specialty. I’m pleased to be coming back to judge in England. In 2008 I was awarded by the EKC to give championship certificates in CKCS. I’m honoured to have been asked by the Committee to judge for the Three Counties Pekingese & Cavaliers Society and look forward to a very special and enjoyably day for all. Sarah Maddison — King Charles Spaniel B List sponsored by King Charles Spaniel Association I have owned a total of 9 King Charles Spaniels with 6 of them gaining their Stud Book numbers. My first King Charles Spaniel, Lukanloran Winston Gold, was born on 9th November 1994. I have been a member of The King Charles Spaniel Club, Northern King Charles Spaniel Club and King Charles Spaniel Association since 1995 / 1996. I was elected to the committee of the King Charles Spaniel Club in March 2001. At the Committee meeting in December 2006 I was asked to look after the King Charles Spaniel Club website and have looked after it since then. I am also on the Committee of several shows in the area where I live. Pauline Sidgwick (Paulian) — Pekingese, Japanese Chin, Papillon, English Toy Terrier (Black & Tan), Griffon Bruxellois, AVNSC Toy, AV Imported Breed Register Toy, AV Toy, BIS. I first became involved with the dog showing world as a youngster, when I acquired a rescue Boxer. I began with child handling classes and basic obedience training. Once married, along with husband Ian, I began showing Cavalier King Charles Spaniels. This was back in the early 70’s. Since those days we have both been actively involved in all aspects of the dog show world. We have made up and bred champions in Cavaliers, King Charles, and Miniature Long Haired Dachshunds. Now passed to award Challenge Certificates in Cavaliers, King Charles, Papillons, Pugs, Chihuahuas, Miniature Pinschers, I will judge my first Championship Toy Group in October 2019. I am looking forward to judging the following breeds for this society, the Japanese Chin (B list judge) Pekingese (A3 list judge), Papillon (A1 list judge), English Toy Terrier (B list judge), and look forward to meeting you all on the day. Hot and cold food available. Pre-order your lunch - please complete the order form on the reverse of the entry form. Hot bacon butties and sausage butties available on arrival. • Chiari–Like Malformation and Syringomyelia Clare Rusbridge
COMMISSIONED PAPER (UK) This paper was commissioned by FECAVA for the Special issue of EJCAP, Genetic/Hereditary Disease and Breeding. Must not be copied without permission © 2014 Chiari–like malformation and syringomyelia Clare Rusbridge Introduction Syringomyelia is a condition characterised by fluid filled cavities (syrinxes or syringes) within the central spinal cord and the resulting damage produces clinical signs of pain and neurological deficits. Since the increase in availability of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), syringomyelia is an increasingly common diagnosis in veterinary medicine (1, 2) The most common cause of syringomyelia in the dog is Chiari-like malformation (Fig 1), a condition analogous to Chiari Type I and 0 malformation in humans (3, 4). Figure 1 Midline sagittal T2-weighted MRI images of the brain and cervical spinal cord from 1 year old female CKCS with Chiari malformation and syringomyelia and presenting with pain. Pathophysiology of syringomyelia A satisfactory explanation of how syringomyelia develops has yet to be elucidated. There is not even a consensus as to whether syrinx fluid is derived from extracellular or cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) (5-8)]. Syringomyelia is a disorder of CSF and therefore understanding the pathogenesis of this enigmatic disorder is dependent on understanding CSF flow dynamics, biochemistry and factors that influence its absorption and production. The majority of CSF is produced by the four choroid plexuses (one in each ventricle of the brain), which circulates through the ventricular system and the subarachnoid spaces of the brain and spinal cord (9, 10). Drainage of CSF is partly into the blood through arachnoid granulations and villi and partly along lymphatic drainage pathways, mostly associated with the cribriform plate of the ethmoid bone (11).

  • Portosystemic Shunt (PSS)
VP Client Information Sheets By VIN Community Contributors Portosystemic Shunt (PSS) Authored by: Becky Lundgren, DVM A portosystemic shunt (PSS, portasystemic shunt, portocaval shunt, portacaval shunt, liver shunt, hepatic shunt, or porto-systemic vascular anomaly) happens when a pet’s venous blood from the stomach, intestines, pancreas, and spleen bypasses the liver. The pet can be born with the shunt (congenital) or can get it later (acquired). About 80% of the cases are congenital, although sometimes a pet can have both types. About 25-33% of the congenital shunts are within the liver. Approximately 0.18% of all dogs have congenital shunting. During pregnancy, the portal blood vessel in the fetus bypasses the liver (the mother’s liver filters out toxins for the fetus). Normally this shunt closes within three days after birth. In affected animals, the shunt doesn't close and the blood continues to bypass the liver. Because the liver filters toxins, if it is bypassed the toxins build up in the body. This results in the puppy or kitten having slow or nonexistent growth (failure to thrive). If left untreated, puppies and kittens are not likely to survive. Congenital shunts seem to happen more in purebreds than in mixed breeds. Breeds with increased risk of PSS include Yorkshire terrier, Maltese terrier, Silky terrier, miniature schnauzer, miniature and toy poodles, Lhasa apso, Bichon Frise, shih tzu, Havanese, Dandie Dinmont terrier, Pekingese, German shepherd dog, golden retriever, Doberman pinscher, Labrador retriever, Irish setter, Samoyed, Old English sheepdog, Irish wolfhound, Australian shepherd, Australian cattle dog, Himalayan, and Persian. No sex predisposition has been documented.

The Veterinary Journal 220 (2017) 7–16 Contents lists available at ScienceDirect The Veterinary Journal journal homepage: www.elsevier.com/locate/tvjl Proportion recovery and times to ambulation for non-ambulatory dogs with thoracolumbar disc extrusions treated with hemilaminectomy or conservative treatment: A systematic review and meta-analysis of case-series studies L. Langerhuus a,*, J. Miles b a AniCura Aarhus Veterinary Hospital, Hasselager Centervej 12, 8260 Viby, Denmark b Department of Veterinary Clinical and Animal Sciences, Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen, Dyrlægevej 16, 1870 Frederiksberg C, Denmark ARTICLE INFO ABSTRACT Article history: Thoracolumbar intervertebral disc extrusion is a common cause of spinal cord dysfunction in dogs. Peer- Accepted 14 December 2016 reviewed studies reporting treatment of predominantly chondrodystrophic dogs with disc extrusion with loss of ambulation with either hemilaminectomy or conservative treatment (rest, analgesics and anti- Keywords: inflammatories) were evaluated in a systematic review of the literature. Intervertebral disc disease Generally, the level of evidence available was low with no controlled studies and only case series avail- Neurological able. In the meta-analysis, there was a clear trend to a greater proportion of dogs recovering and returning Spinal faster to ambulation for dogs treated with hemilaminectomy than for conservatively treated dogs. The mean proportions that recovered for neurological grades 3, 4 and 5 were 93, 93 and 61% for those treated with hemilaminectomy, and 79, 62 and 10% for those treated conservatively (Grade 3 – non-ambulatory paraparetic dogs; grade 4 – paraplegic dogs with intact deep pain perception; grade 5 – paraplegic dogs without intact deep pain perception).
