Hymn of Reflection When God Restored Our Common Life RESIGNATION

When God restored our common life, our hope, our liberty, at first it seemed a passing dream, a waking fantasy; a shock of joy swept over us, for we had wept so long; the seeds we watered once with tears sprang up into a song.

We went forth weeping, sowing seeds in hard, unyielding soil; with laughing hearts we carry home the fruit of all our toil. We praise the One who gave the growth, with voices full and strong. The seeds we watered once with tears sprang up into a song.

Great liberating God, we pray for all who are oppressed. May those who long for what is right with justice now be blest. We pray for those who mourn this day, and all who suffer wrong; may seeds they water now with tears spring up into a song.

* Call to Worship

Leader: O Lord, our God, how majestic is your name in all the earth! People: When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, what are mortals that you are mindful of them and care for them? Leader: Yet you have made them a little lower than yourself and crowned them with glory and honor. People: You have created beautifully and given us dominion over creation. Leader: And because you care for us, you call us to the same care for creation--all things under our feet, in the air, in the seas. People: O Lord, our God, how majestic is your name in all the earth! ALL: Let us worship God! Psalm 8

* Hymn 1 Holy, Holy, Holy! Lord God Almighty! NICAEA

Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty! Early in the morning our song shall rise to thee Holy, holy, holy! merciful and mighty! God in three persons, blessed Trinity!

Holy, holy, holy! All the saints adore thee, Casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea; cherubim and seraphim falling down before thee, who wert, and art, and evermore shalt be.

Holy, holy, holy! though the darkness hide thee, though the eye of sinfulness thy glory may not see, only thou art holy; there is none beside thee, perfect in power, in love and purity.

Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty! All thy works shall praise thy name, in earth and sky and sea. Holy, holy, holy! merciful and mighty! God in three persons, blessed Trinity! * Prayer of the Day

* Prayer of Confession

O God, when we are put to the test we do not quickly respond. If called upon to decide, we lack the courage of faith. Confessing commitment, we confuse your will with our own. Seeking security, we turn to devices that we control. Your voice comes from heaven to chasten and discipline. Your commandments Jesus proclaimed as the course we should take. Forgive us when we deviate from the truth you deliver, and increase our trust in you. Hear us now as we take some time in silent prayer. (A pause for silent individual confession follows.)

* Assurance of Pardon

* Gloria Patri Hymn 581

* Passing of the Peace Leader: The Peace of Christ be with you.

People: And also with you.

Concerns of the Church

Prayers of the People and The Lord’s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

Offertory If Ye Love Me Philip Wilby

If ye love me, keep my commandments, and I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another comforter, that he may abide with you forever: Even the spirit of truth. And ye know him, for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. I will not leave you comfortless. I will come to you.
