10:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m. All That Dwell in the Light: 350 Years of Quakers in W.E.B. Du Bois Library, Lower Level & SCUA Reading Room, 25th Floor Drawing upon the extraordinary records of the New England Yearly Meeting of the Society of Friends (NEYM) now held in Special Collections and University Archives (SCUA), this exhibit examines the history of Quakers and Quakerism in New England. Containing nearly 400 linear feet of archival records and thousands of books and pamphlets, the Collection was donated to SCUA in 2016. Quakers, also known as Friends, have a long and dynamic history in New England. When they first arrived in the region in the 1650s, they presented both a radical alternative and a significant challenge to Puritan orthodoxy, espousing an egalitarian ethos rooted in the Quaker concept of inward light. Over the centuries, this egalitarian vision has led Friends into passionate advocacy for the abolition of slavery, gender and racial equality, and opposition to all war. The exhibit is comprised of two parts. In the SCUA reading room on the library’s 25th floor is a general introduction to New England Quakers, with an array of foundational and historical materials on display: rare books, letters, and other documents, among them one of the earliest pleas for religious freedom written on this continent. The exhibit continues on the library’s lower level, with a closer look at some topics and themes in Quakerism: commerce, education, the role and status of women, conscientious objectors and peace activism, and the doctrinal conflicts of the nineteenth century that divided New England Quakers for 100 years.
