Southport Sharks JAFC News Newsletter Date: Presidents Report… 8th July 2013 Thankfully, this weekend all our matches got played despite some of the Volume 4, Issue 16 ovals still being quite wet. This year so far the weather Gods have certainly Pg. 1 deserted us with one of the wettest footy seasons that I can remember for a while. Luckily we haven‟t been affected too much over the last couple of weeks with most teams having Contents some time off over the school holi- Presidents Report 1-3 days, but training was certainly a Other News 4-8 problem for most sides last week 2013 Coaches 9 Match Reports 10-27 and it is starting to show in some of Oval layout 28 our results. Obviously all Clubs are in the same boat and we have been lucky enough to have the use of the Parkland Indoor Cricket Centre this year so at the least some footies are getting kicked. On the left is a photo I took of the bottom oval a week ago this Sunday and there was still free water on the surface of the oval right through this week.

th Australian Medical Student Association Games @ Sharks this Wednesday 10 July

With the Sun shining all teams should be able to train as normal this week. Just be aware that on

this Wednesday (10th July) the Sharks are hosting the Australian Medical Students Association games (not football) on the Bottom Oval and Village Green. The car parking area between the Main Oval and Bottom Oval will be reserved for buses only so parents will need to park on the northern side of the Main Oval. All teams will need to train on the Main Oval until after the Stu- dents games are completed around 5.30pm.

We Need Help!!! - with 1400 Medical Students descending on the Sharks Ovals from 8am we need volunteers to help in the Canteen and BBQ to feed this hungry mob. With all the wet weather this year we have lost a lot of revenue in the canteen and this will help us fund the Club for next season. If you can help out at some stage during the day it would really be appreciated.

Round 12

This weekend sees our second last big home game day of the year. The only exceptions are the U11 White team playing at Coomera on Saturday morning and the U13‟s which travel down the highway to Palm Beach for an early morning start on Sunday. The weekend kicks off with our U14 Div 1 side at home on Friday night against Surfers Paradise. Our Under 8‟s also play this Friday night at home. For the rest of our teams it‟s going to be a big day on Saturday. Our Senior Club has a bye this weekend but will be training on the Main Oval from 8am on Saturday for those of you that want to get down and have a look. See match table later in the newsletter.

Canteen Update:

Some of you may have already noticed but our Canteen Fairy (Carmen) has been very busy over the school holiday period, working with our Senior Club and the Gold Coast City Council to get the area under the pergola‟s around the canteen cemented in time for our next home game. No longer will our BBQ volunteers and those eating around the canteen have to stand in mud and slush.

A massive thank you to Carmen for getting this done and also to our Senior Club who provided the funds for the works through their membership donation scheme.

Volume 4, Issue 16 Pg. 5

HYDRATION FOR JUNIOR AFL PLAYERS Hydration loss of less than two percent of body weight is enough to cause a decrease in performance.

Avoiding dehydration is important for AFL players who want to perform at there best.

Studies show most players can expect to lose on average approximately 1L/hr and in hot, humid weather 2-

3L/hr.

Hydration Guidelines

Ensure you drink plenty of water, all day, every day. Your urine should be pale to clear in colour except for your first urination of the day.

As a general guideline, you should be drinking:

2 Litres per day + 1 extra Litre for every hour of exercise

Tips for daily hydration: 1. Drink with each meal 2. Keep a bottle with you over the day Get plenty of fluids in the early part of the day

Game/Training Procedure

Start drinking water as soon as you wake. Continue to drink plenty of water leading up to the game and training.

Players should take every opportunity to drink during exercise, especially during all breaks. Note – once you feel thirsty you are already dehydrated.

Players require approximately 250 ml (I cup) for every 15 minutes of exercise. To ensure this amount is consumed the player should drink small amounts at regular intervals.

Hydration after exercise

It is necessary to rehydrate as quickly as possible after exercise. Sports drinks are a good choice after exercise as they assist in hydration and also provide replenishment of glucose back into the muscles. Protein drinks (with a water base) are also good as they assist in hydration and also assist muscle recovery and healing following exercise.

Make sure your remind your children the importance of hydration. Phone us at the clinic 5561 1810 if you would like any more information on hydration or recovery strategies to improve performance.

8th July 2013 Under 15’s & Under 18’s Girls

Volume 4, Issue 16 It was off to Dunlop Court for our last match before the break in the win- Pg. 10 ter gloom. We were down on personnel but as usual high in spirit. Un- fortunately Broadbeach can‟t match our numbers but it was very pleas- ing to see our girls volunteer to cat suit up to get the most out of the u15‟s game. This was an old fashioned see-sawing contest, which featured patches of great skill, though mostly a slogfest, with the team able to clear the ball to space or a leading target edging in front. Outstanding game from Mikayla Simic who is shedding her role as „team enforcer‟ and letting her skill and game smarts shine through. As usual, Mikayla played on through injury after copping a nasty whack to her hand early. Great courage, Mikayla, we salute you! Kindy ran amok early until an injury forced her from the ground. Kalinda was cranky about not being able to come on… but once you‟re carried off, you‟re off for good….them‟s the rules kid!

We had our fair share of injury concerns, with many of the Helensvale contingent having backed up from a successful Carol Berry Cup campaign (well done ladies!!). Serene pulled up sore in the thigh, Sara continues to be plagued by a knee complaint, Lucciana battled through aches and pains and Jazzy copped a mammoth falcon which doubled the size of her nose in a few seconds. Brittany Bell adds a lot of drive to this team, her positioning and skilful ball use very noticeable from the sidelines. Our brick walls in defence were just terrific this week Chloe and Ella really are solid and just a little bit scary down there, repelling attack after attack. Charlee was tested out in defence and did well, though the cranky look on her face suggests she isn‟t that fond of being stuck away from attack. Court battled away up forward, was hugely positive and snagged a great goal while Sammy Phillips was everywhere, throwing herself at contest after contest. Sammy doesn‟t know until now, but some u18‟s were watching on Monday night and simply said „she‟s a gun‟.Darcy Fennell had her best game of the year, really getting under the nose of her opponents and even with a sore toe Bonnie Pearson looked dangerous at all times with the ball.. like a female version of ! Unfor- tunately for the girls, Broadbeach „won‟ this game by a point… poor Darcy (suited up for Broady) put in a positioned she couldn‟t possibly fudge, scoring the winning goal!

Yep, it was close but there‟s more to footy than winning and the way we rallied around Darce (upset that she‟d „won‟ it for them) was one of my highlights for the year. Time to start concentrating a little more on the scoreboard now girls, we‟ll look to string wins together in the back half of the season. I‟m putting this out there… we can win and will win every game left given the huge improvement, great spirit and sense of fun amongst this crazy bunch. There. I‟ve said the „w‟ word!

I‟m still really feeling for our older girls this week. They are a first year team with a great attitude that is usually only found in sides that have played together for many., many years. With only three eligi- ble u18‟s available our younger storm troopers filled holes but were just no match for a full strength Broadbeach outfit. Our girls were brave as usual and just made the most out of the night, enjoying each other‟s company and celebrating the small victories along the way. Commanding efforts from Gemma, stout defence from Talia (with an interested onlooker on the sidelines…. J), some strong leading and grabs from Grace (love how you encourage the younger ones Gracie, well done) and never-say-die stuff from the football machine in Rachel were highlights. Kaitlyn Jack played her best game for a long time.

Much thanks to Sammy, Court and Jazzy for backing up yet again, Darcy Fennell who was just terri- fic and Brittany Bell, who put eight awesome quarters of footy together on a cold and dreary evening. It‟s fair to say we didn‟t enjoy this outing.

8th July 2013 The Let‟s put it behind us and soldier on into the second half of the season, but do not forget the gloating and over-celebrating of the opposition tonight. It will make things much sweeter when we Volume 4, Issue 16 topple them later this year and even more sweeter when we celebrate with a lot more style and dig- Pg. 11 nity.

Two new sides enter the competition in the second half of the season. Coolangatta/Tweed will play an u18 team and Coomera will play an u15 side. This is an awesome development and good for us.

Broadbeach have emerged as a super power of this comp, having picked up most of the girls from the disbanded Surfer‟s team and some Carrara girls. Our older ones have been hit by this so it will be good and well deserved for them to be able to pit themselves against another first year team.

Fins up girls, Shark On, keep checking emails and phone messages. A successful second half of the season awaits!

Super 6’s

It was a glorious morning to play football - the sun shining, and the smell of freshly cut damp grass!

We were lucky enough today, to train and play on the main oval.

Coach Shawn started, by having the kids kick with their parents. It was great seeing the interaction between parents and their children, and it is also very important for the kids, as it is part of their skill development.

We did various drills, then divided into our teams for our practice game. With our new structure, it is impor- tant to remember which team your child is in. A big thank you to all our parents for their participation. Especially those that put their hands up to coach the 4 teams. Without your help, this would not be possible. Thanks also goes to the family's that bought oranges this week.

It was great to see everyone also helping clear the equipment off the ground at the end of the session - what great teamwork we showed!

We can't wait for next week... GO SHARKS!!!

8th July 2013 Under 8 Green

Volume 4, Issue 16 After a couple of weeks off because of the bad weather we finally got to get out onto the oval and Pg. 12 play some footy. The boys wasted no time, our midfield trio of Cailum, Tahj and Diesel worked ex- tremely well with all three boys getting their hands on the footy, sharing it around and kicking long to our forwards. An even share of goals for our boys down forward, Ollie was marking everything, Jack- son was kicking them from all angles and Harry was on fire kicking a couple as well. The two guys down back were just unstoppable, Lochie and Patrick were like a brick wall, they didn't let anything through and when they got the ball they kicked long to our mids. The best part about the game was all the boys clicked together as a team, they shared the ball and it was awesome to see from a coach‟s point of view that everyone was getting a go. Well done boys!

Saturday morning was a beautiful day for our first game back after a well deserved break. This week we took on the Yellow Team, which was prov- ing to be quite tough with our team being 3 players down. A big thank you to Callum from the Yellow team who came over to play with us to help even up the num- bers.

We are so impressed with the boys this week they put in a massive effort and we saw some great plays, they are really starting to work as a team passing and handballing to each other. A special mention has to go to Jackson Connell who coped a heavy hit to his nose giving him his first blood nose, but was tough enough to come back on and played really well for the rest of the game. Also to Dan who showed some great defense skills this week.

“Player Of The Match” this week went to Jackson Crowe who showed great improvement in his game. He had a couple of shots at goal, scored a goal and had a real hunger for the ball. “Player of The Week” this week went to Kyle who played really skillfully through out the game espe- cially in the 4th quarter where he kicked 3 goals.

Volume 4, Issue 16 Purple took on Blue this week in the first match back after the break. The break did the boys justice Pg. 13 with them coming back refreshed and recharged and their enthusiasm showed in the game they played. Once again their skills and smarts were taken up a notch especially when it was needed most. Although we were playing short all of the boys stepped up and made the most of every posses- sion and their defence was tight. Every loose ball was attacked and again the dynamic use of hand- balls when it was needed showed the boys were thinking. Samuel got player of the match and Josh got player of the week but all the boys should be proud of themselves for playing their best game so far this year. Well done.

After a break for a couple of weeks from games (and fine weather!) it was great to hit the field again in the sunshine.

We were only 5 strong but what a fantastic effort those 5 players put it!! Jonny was away motorbike riding so we had Bailey‟s Dad, Jason take the Blue team for the morning. Thank you very much Ja- son!! Zade, Jayden, Campbell, Bailey & Kinser came out firing and they continued that way for a full 4 quarters. The boys all seemed to enjoy a chance to be the “one and only” in the forward line with free reign to kick away!!

Man of the Match this week went to Zade who was in the thick of it all morning. A fantastic effort from all of the other boys led Jason to hand out McDonalds awards to all of them!

Don‟t forget to come to training in your playing gear this Tuesday ready to have our team photo taken at 4.30pm sharp (please arrive 4.15pm). This week‟s game is on FRIDAY night - arrive 5.30pm for a 6pm start.

started with 6 players and our Yellow team started with 8. A big thank you to Callum for helping out st the black team for the 1 half and to even up the numbers, great stuff Callum. There were no out- standing players this week for the Yellow team, it was a fantastic team game and I want to congratu- late ALL the boys for the excellent attitude and mateship towards the Black team who were very un- der manned.

Awards this week…. The Macca‟s award went to Harry. Harry just keeps improving week in week out and is just such a cult figure for the yellow team Great stuff Harry, keep it up. The Mini Golf man of the match award went to Josh. Josh played his best game so far this yearand kicked multiple goals yesterday, Great job Josh. Our 3rd award today went to Callum for his sportsmanship and helping out the Black team when they had players short. Well done Callum.

After our out of character, below par performance earlier in the year against Silver, the Red boys were pumped to put on more polished performance. With many stars from both teams out and with some relaxation of the modi- fied zones due to 6 versus 6, there was plenty of space to roam. Our game plan was to work together in pairs using handball and switching play when nec- essary to open up the field of play. Jaden and Jack controlled their zones, Jay and Zach rebounded well and Ja- mie and Liam set up many scoring op- portunities. At the final siren parents from both teams agreed that they had witnessed a tight contest bursting with many brilliant individual and team performances. As the Red‟s walked off the oval with their heads high I was impressed with all our player‟s efforts.

Well what a weekend of great footy. The weather both on Friday night & Saturday was just perfect for our perfect games. It was a great change to do a Friday night game under lights & also a great pleas- ure watching all you boys play as you have all formed a real team all looking out for each other in every part of the game. Each & every one of you have really improved in your own special way all forming a special part of our great team.

We started our Friday night game with Alastair leading us as our captain, He really played like a true captain on the night kicking a couple of great goals with one on the run. His tackling was also great to watch really holding his own & taking ownership of the ball. We had Cody being our captain for our first game on Saturday morning against Pac Pines. Cody played 3 great games of footy over the weekend kicking several goals & really showing some huge strength holding his oppositions back at all times. I think his nick name for the games is the enforcer as he really showed he meant business. Kai was our captain for our second game on Saturday also against Pac Pines kicking the opening goal in style for the game & really playing like a captain should. Seth played 3 really consistent games over the weekend really taking some gutsy marks whilst storming in to the packs & holding his own. He also really shared the ball around & kicked a ripper of a goal buy swinging around his body. Sam looked really slick out there over the 3 games as he has the ability & style to adapt to any position & do really well in most situations. He played 3 great hard games of footy.

8th July 2013 Marcus really showed some brilliant ground work over the 3 games, he really showed he has been listening at training about the skill to pick the ball up on the run & own it. He really shows he deserves Volume 4, Issue 16 to own the ball as much as anyone else no matter how big or small they are. Leo proved that he is Pg. 16 our hard nut of the team storming in to a pack & coming out with the ball with lightning speed & hav- ing everybody wondering what just happened as he is away with the ball with no chance of anyone

catching him.

Lachlan was really missed at our Saturday games especially after the way he played on Friday night. He was just classy to watch just like the big boys in the big league. He was lighting fast but really smooth at the same time, he was not scared to go in hard & come out with the ball. He was Just great to watch. John is another one in our team that has incredible speed, when he gets the ball

it is real magic to watch just how fast he can run with a ball. His ability to dodge & weave at that speed is also a skill that not many have & he just seems to be a natural at it. Ethan has really come ahead in the team holding the opposition off incredibly well when playing in the back line & wanting the ball just as much or more than anyone out there. His vision to get the ball to one of his team mate when they are passing him shows real team spirit & an eye for the game.

Callum really has embraced our training drills with his fantastic aeroplane arms not giving the oppo- sition a chance to get past in any way. His vision to read the play & step back from a pack to give his team mate in the pack a great option to get the ball out to is really great to watch as he is reading the play well & really learning. I think Callum out of every one is a deep thinker & has taken on the game incredibly well. Alex hands down is the best smotherer in the league, there is not a game that goes past that he does not put himself in front of the ball & smother the oppositions kick no matter how hard he gets knocked around with it he keeps doing it so well. This is real dedicated footy & a great thing to watch just how dedicated he is.

Aiden showed over the 3 games some great defensive footy, his attack on the ball was hard & fast & you could see his determination flowing from him in each & every play he was involved in. His kicking was great & passing the ball was great & kept the game really flowing well. Adam really plays some good hard footy, He has the ability to hold strong in a competition coming out with the ball most of the time. Adam really shows team spirit always looking out for his team mates & looking for the best way to pass the ball on so we can keep the ball flowing in our direction.

As special thanks again to Scott & Matt for all their great help in every way. Thanks also to Sally & Tony for doing the Oranges as even us coaches enjoyed them on a warm day. Thanks also Mark for doing the goals & Caleb for being our water boy for Saturday.

Thanks again for a great weekend of action packed footy & see you all at training on Thursday night.

Volume 4, Issue 16 What a weekend of football, a special thanks to all the boys and their Mums and Dads for making the Pg. 17 additional weekend game‟s on Saturday against Pac Pines on such short notice. We ventured to Burleigh for our first Friday night game against Burleigh Black. It was so pleasing to

watch the boys play disciplined football putting their learning‟s at practice into their game styles and this is paying off. The first half was an even contest with some great defensive work by all players. The second half saw our boys dominate the game. It‟s very hard to single individual efforts out as all play-

ers played and tried their best all night keeping Burleigh to 1 only goal in the sec- ond half.

Our captain for the game was Flynn. Man of the match went to Jake Peachey for his great defence and fearless aggres- sion at the ball – well done mate. Our Player of the week went to Nico who played another hard game, setting many plays out of the centre. Our Best team man award went to Jake Secombe who battled hard all night and shared the footy around with some great passing. Saturday we ventured to Pac Pines for a double header and the boys shone like a team of super stars completely dominating both games under warm conditions. Well done to all of the boys, you should be proud of the efforts and the way you played as a team - I‟m proud of each and every one of you. The captains for the day were William and Lucas who both played captains games. Game 1 awards went to; Man of the Match: Liam who rebounded out of centre and always disposed of the ball well Player of the week: James who played well in defence and out of the centre with some tough con- tests Best team man went to Jett who played a solid game all day backing his team mates up and sharing the ball well.

Game 2 awards went to; Man of the Match: Lucas for a great captain‟s game with some great plays in defence with strong marking and contests. Player of the week went to Jonathon who played as asked and kept finding space in the goal square, a good team effort.

Best Team Man went to William who did not stop running and attacking the ball all game, great to see.

Volume 4, Issue 16 Under 10 Silver Pg. 18 Friday 05 July 2013 Southport Sharks vs Burleigh Black

After a long break the boys were super keen to play football.

Taj was captain for the game and he and the boys came out onto the field with all cylinders firing. Although the skills were a little rusty to start everyone attacked the ball hard and played in close and tight to help their team mates out.

With lots of handpassing in the first quarter meant the ball moved around quickly from man to man. For the whole game Jules , Benny, Antonio and Bryson were constantly in and under getting the ball out of the packs and quickly feeding the ball off to their team mates.

Rhys was terrific out of the center clearing the ball on a number of occasions into our forward zone. With one in particular beautiful clearance straight to a leading Cooper - who kicked a deadly accu- rate goal.

With a few boys trying to have pot shots at the goals from impossible angles or well outside their range our rule from the second quarter on, was to target the top of the square. This worked well as in two quarters we grabbed a couple of goals each to Taj and George and one snappy kick from Ant – all from positioning themselves front and square to the goal.

Jasper (“the TANK”) stepped up a notch this game with terrific defensive work. What was particularly impressive was how he lifted his eyes to look for a target.

Both Kayden and Taj showed that they are definitely team players with how they unselfishly looked out for players to pass to at times when they could have had a snap at goals or kick blindly forward.

Another focus for the game was to try to kick to guys leading into space or where we had numbers. Tyson followed this to a tee with some fantastic passes out of the backline down the safe boundary and into our forward zone. Luke C and Nic “C”-Rumbles also listened and changed their play to en- sure they kicked to where we had advantage of numbers.

The and hold and release rule was rather inconsistently interpreted tonight but our boys played it hard and fair. Cade in particular exhibited how a bit of league training can help with your ability to run down, block and tackle. Although the umpire at times may have felt that his tackles were borderline for under 10‟s. To us watching from the boundary they were great to watch, especially when he stopped the opposition in their tracks at full speed. I think everyone is ready to move to the next level.

Fantastic effort by everyone tonight – you were all a credit to your team and club. Now that the weather is fining up again lets get stuck into training on Thursday night and improve further ready for the next game.

Volume 4, Issue 16 Sharks U10 White vs Pacific Pines Black Pg. 19 It was good to see the rain hold off enough for the boys to get out onto the field after a break for the School Holidays.Up against a very well drilled Pacific Pines outfit, the boys took a little while to blow out the cobwebs but as they have done all season, played an inspiring second half of footy to finish the match strongly.

Sam captained the side for the night and lead by example, taking out the Coaches Award for his tenacious attack on the footy and setting the standard for the boys. Jordan Engel took out the Team Award getting involved in the contest and helping his team mates gain possession. Luke Gray demonstrated his skills in the wet, playing his usual tough and relentless game in getting the footy to earn the Skills Award.

In a real dig deep team effort, everyone contributed. Bailey was at his usual best, pairing tough hard ball gets with his silky skills, and Kobe showed he wasn't afraid to get the hard ball, with some nice gathers, run and carry through the middle. Ethan was as slippery as ever with some great kicking, Drew took some impressive grabs in the wet and matched it with penetrating kicks, and Dekota showed a clean set of heels despite carrying a niggle and was strong in defense. Brody was once again relentless at the ball and showed his speed breaking the packs, along with Jordie who never lets the opposition get an easy kick, and Jacob who stood up all game as a target and a wall of de- fense. Luke Crotty played another strong game, Josh defended and presented well along with some nice kicking, and Chris did a lot of hard work in defense. Tom worked hard all game, whilst Aaron played that important linking role from back to forward with some good marking and delivery by foot.

Thanks to Troy who had a challenging night managing the interchange, along with Darren helping out with the boys, and all the family and friends for their cheering and supporting from the sidelines.

Very proud of the boys for the way they listened and showed that Sharks fighting spirit and teamwork to finish the game on a high. Looking forward to next week...and hopefully a dry track!

8th July 2013 Under 11’s Silver Volume 4, Issue 16 Pg. 20 First game back after the school holiday break and the boys were fired up. We trained through the break and it showed early as the boys looked switched on. Liam was on fire in the first quarter as he took the opposition on backing his pace and continually beating his opponent. Well done Liam nice goal later in the game. Our defence stood up today again with Billy , Ethan , Jack , Harrison and Oscar all playing well manning up and spoiling the ball. Our midfielders continued to get in and under the packs with Hugh, Speedy , Elijah and Riley all trying hard. Hunter was a bit quiet today compared to his normal standard but I am sure he will come back hard next week.

Our forward line led into space and Daniel kicked two nice goals. Jacks brother Anthony helped us out and was a very good forward for our team today. Thanks Anthony.

The best player on the ground today was Dale his tackling pressure was fantastic and he continues to improve each game. Well done Dale great game.

After almost the whole team was caught in traffic we finally all made it to take on TWC. With a full squad on the field we got off to a shaky start, with our voice a little quiet and some panic kicking, it was a bit of a worry, but our defence stood up well to restrict TWC to 1 goal 4 points in the first. We regrouped at quarter time and put in a good fight to score a goal to keep in touch through the second quarter. After half time we bolted out of the gate with great pressure across the ground and scored 3 goals to regain the lead, but after that we looked like we ran out of puff, and TWC just took the game away from us from there.

Boys if we had kept the pressure on for the rest of the 3rd quarter I believe that the result could have been different, but that is something for us all to work on.What I took from tonight‟s game is when we work for each other wecan be unstoppable and we looked really good, when we stop, we are in trou- ble. I learnt that our players that are new to the game continue to impress and get better every week. I also learnt that we need to work on our positioning on the field to make best use of the rebounded footy of half back.

8th July 2013 Now to the player reviews. Tonight‟s best on ground was a tie between Nathan and Julian, Nathan was fantastic of half back, he basically had the ball on a string, for the second quarter he was instru- Volume 4, Issue 16 mental at stopping the ball at our half back line. Julian again ran all night and during our purple patch Pg. 21 in the second quarter and his pressure at the ball was relentless and his run and carry was pretty good as well. Jeremy who earns a call up to the div 1 team tomorrow on the back of his performance tonight had a great game up forward, he took a couple of marks and was smart with the footy. He also showed the perfect example of what you can do when you don‟t have the ball, Sheppard your team mate to give him space to deliver the ball forward, and he did this repeatedly.

The 4th award went to EJ, he ran all night and off half back he played a good defensive game, the best thing he did tonight was go 1 on 1 with his opponent. Tyson again continued to impress with his ability to get the ball, but I saw the other side of his game tonight and that was his tackling, it did not matter how big the opponent was. Probably the next thing for you, is for you to help get your team mates in the game with a quick pass.

James played well through the middle and took a great mark in defence, the best thing about our captain is that he just goes and goes and goes. Dylan was pretty good up forward; he was instru- mental in 1 of our goals by applying forward pressure to stop the defender from getting the ball. Dus- tin’s ruck work continues to improve each week and his voice on the field is second to none, even his kicking tonight looked good.

Nicholas scored our first goal out of the pack tonight and presented well to give a target; he took the instruction to move his defender around ground well, and did just that. Jack scored 2 of our goals tonight and the best thing about that was he fought at ground level to get possession of the ball to score which was pleasing to see. Zachary who started down back and ended up forward play really well, I was really impressed at the pressure he put on the opposition, and he kicked a bullet like pass that hit a target about 15m away.

Cody who I had ear marked to go forward tonight was sent down back to bolster our defence and had another good game and is another example of a player who is prepared to put his body on the line. Alec has come along well this year he had a good dual with an opposition player to keep the ball in a contest until help arrived.

Tyler took good advantage of his opportunities when on the ball tonight, and used his body well to apply a couple of good sheppards; his defensive game is starting to come along too, after a couple of weeks in the back line. Max was given the job in the last half of the game to tag the TWC No. 3 and he did well; this is something that he needs to add to his game to make him an even better player.

Out of all of our players, David looked to be the cleanest with ball in hand, he uses his body well to make it difficult for the opposition to tackle him, and that gives him space to deliver the kick.

Ben Mc was good up forward tonight, he moved his opponent up and down the field and while he didn‟t get a goal he ensured a contest whenever it came his way. Ben Wplayed his role in the de- fence of the goals and positioned himself well to see the ball through for points instead of goals; he is a key part of our defensive line.

8th July 2013 Hudson had another good game tonight with his ability to take an overhead mark and keep his oppo- nent honest, I think he played 3 and half quarters before he was to spent to go on. KYshowed tonight Volume 4, Issue 16 why he has been called back to the Div 1 team, his second efforts tonight were awesome, and the Pg. 22 best part was he showed his skill right in front of the coach‟s box for Gav to see.

Our 2 under 11‟s who played up for us tonight, Liam and Mitch both had good games with Mitch taking a great mark to convert for a goal and Liam using his speed to run and carry the ball. Best thing I liked about these 2 is that they have no fear and will go hard for the ball, thanks for playing with us tonight..

Southport v Burleigh Under12 Div 1

This week we welcomed 2 more players to our in Div1 for the first time, Jeremy Emot and Mitch Bell for our challenge against the undefeated Burleigh Bombers at Burleigh. With 6 of our regular players unavailable it was always going to represent a challenge, but also give us an opportunity to test our- selves against a top side.

A mid-season review has seen the coaches become more demanding of the players in order to reach the standards that they are all capable of as individuals and as a team. We have been really focus- sing on our ability to compete around the contests, manning up at all times, and more importantly being prepared to work hard to protect our team mates when we get the ball. Several of our boys were given specific roles this week in order to make the oppositions key players be accountable and to stop their known midfield dominance. To their credit, these players did exactly what they were told to do for the 4 quarters which created many contests and limited the opposition‟s dominance. We challenged and dominated Burleigh for long periods of the game, keeping the ball in our attacking area creating scoring opportunities. Unfortunately we then had too many other players that were not prepared to run, chase, tackle, man up and protect their team mates. It takes all 22 players to work together to obtain the result we desire.

Boys, while training has certainly improved over the last few weeks, this was another reminder that your actions on game day indicate just how well you have trained, listened and attempted to follow team rules and instructions. While many players listen and performed to the best of their ability, we had too many players were not prepared to follow clear instructions. This results in the opposition winning too many easy possessions and ultimately that shows on the score board. We all believe that we have a good side, but a “great team” will always beat a team of individuals.

Overall this week was still an improvement in many areas, but we MUST continue to work hard and develop as a team to allow us the opportunity to push towards finals in a few weeks‟ time.

Back after our 3 week break and we were up against PBC at their home ground. We to had a great win against them last outing and the boys were primed to repeat that effort and try to forge into sec- ond spot on the ladder. We spoke before the game about winning the hard ball and spreading to push the ball into a structured forward line. The game started well and we kicked the first two goals and showed plenty of desire to win the contest. The midfield setup with Djaran rucking, Jas and browny on ball and Jacko in the guts was really working well. With Ryan sweeping in off the wing to the defensive side, we were clearing the ball really well and stopping their attempts to get any mo- mentum. Tyler up forward was roving the forward line well and we went into the first break up a cou- ple of goals. I would love to say that‟s the way the game kept heading but someone turned out the lights and the boys from back to front fell asleep and thought they were still on holidays.

The second and third quarters were as I told the kids “ Pathetic”. The tackling and pressure just stopped and all efforts to play in front and attack the ball ceased as though they were instructed to do so. There were no such instructions from me, so maybe PBC asked them to and they obliged. Some stern words were imparted at the breaks but these fell on deaf ears also. So, three quarter time I asked the boys to explain to me what things could be done to arrest the situation, and they re- sponded with tackling pressure, gut running to push to the next contest to help their teammates, be accountable for your man, communicate with each other to fill holes, create defensive walls and above all Have A Crack. We were down by 6 goals at the last change and the boys went out in the

8th July 2013 last term with a renewed enthusiasm to fight back. This is what occurred and the ball was starting to go our way. The umpires were not rewarding great tackling today which was frustrating to watch but Volume 4, Issue 16 we had to keep pressing. Blair and Deano were doing a great job down back and along with the Pg. 24 backs, were restricting any PBC scoring opportunities. We came back to a 3 goal margin but it was a case of 2 bad quarters really let us down.

Today was a case of having to play 4 quarters to win and we only got 2 out. Once again I said after the game that we need to get harder at the ball to win tight contests. This will be reflected at training in the coming weeks, Tackling, bumping, shepherding and niggling. These things are what wins these tight matches.

What a fantastic day, as we headed down to Neilsons road Cararra to take on the Saints, the sun was out and we had great conditions for footy.

We had a solid contested training session on Wednesday and we wanted to take that theme into the game. Before the kick off we also talked about taking the game on, enjoying our footy and playing on at all costs. We also wanted to defend hard and man up when they had the footy. Our warm up went well and the boys seemed to be in the zone.

In the first quarter we started with a lot of attack on the footy and in the first 10 minutes we continu- ously went inside forward 50 but where did not convert that into majors and we scored 5 behinds and although we seemed to control the quarter Carrara scored 2 goals against the flow of play and we saw ourselves behind on the scoreboard.

We regrouped quickly as I told the boys not to panic and to continue to take the game on, and boy did they do that! From the second quarter to the final siren we kicked 10 consecutive goals and Carrara could only managed a single behind which was great credit to our defence.

Jasper aggression in the ruck was fantastic as he won a lot of hit outs which enabled Max, Anthony and Lauchie to drive the ball deep into our forward line. Big Jared took some big grabs up forward and converted 2 goals and the team was on their way! All the boys lifted and we seen some great performances across the Ground: Shano's defence was brilliant as he help sweep up a lot of the saints attacks, Joshy waugh's run from defence was a treat as usual and Jack Hallewell's long kicks out of defence was really was good to watch. Max was in and under all day, worked his butt off and helped drive the team forward. Anthony's desperation was fantastic and he also set up goals for his team mates and included one of his own. Liam Sandral's run from defence was very good as he broke the lines several times. It was especially great to see Nathan White have a break-out game as we moved him on the ball and wing, he kept his feet well and used some great delivery with some beautiful kicks forward. BJ had his best game of the season which included a bit of tough contested work, but his ability to find space was good especially when it resulting in an inspiring team link up goal. Lauchie showed his versatility again as we used him in the ruck , up forward and down back.

Volume 4, Issue 16 Southport 23.21.159 Defeated Surfers 4.4.28 Pg. 26 After our holiday break, it seemed like the boys were still on it in the rooms before the game against Surfers. They seemed flat and not too interested. This thankfully changed as soon as they ran out on the field as they hit the switch and exploded from the opening bounce. As a team the boys shared the work load and demolished Surfers. To be fair Surfers tried valiantly but unfortunately they were outmuscled , outskilled and outplayed in every aspect by our boys. It was as if the boys wanted eve- ryone to have a good game. It was a focus of ours to make the second and third efforts when we could and it paid off handsomely. Smetty came in to the side after Hoggy pulled out due to work com- mitments, and played some good solid footy. Hirdy was having a good crack in as was Nugget and Lachie P was playing tank again.

Our Blonde Tyler ( Hendo, now called B.T.) was clean skilled and gutsy, Mark actually pushed For- ward and kicked a couple, Timmy played a terrific game all over the field and Onyx played his best game of the year for us. We welcomed back Nick G from his break and he dominated for us. Luke not far behind him. Aaron and Kai moved forward towards the end of the game after dominating down back and enjoyed the spoils as well. Bowie and Kenny went through the centre and gave us some swift feet and good movement of the ball. Toothy bought his own footy. He was everywhere and dominated every time he went near it. He snagged 3 as well which has cost his mum a lot of money per goal. Macca again proved size means nothing if you have a footy brain and heart to tackle. He was everywhere and dynamic.

Same goes with “H”. Harry really rubbed it into his mates from Surfers with a cracking game. Lachie Kerr, Jack and Zac smashed in hard when required and ran hard both ways as did Caleb against his old team and loved cracking in hard. Tyler J.E., 9now know as Non blonde Tyler, N.B.T.)was our fo- cal point up front and deserved the lazy 6 he kicked in a solid all round game.

One of the best things was not how well the boys played, but the manner in which they did. When the opposition comes and compliments you on the quality and respect the boys showed is fantastic. We now move into 2nd place fellas but we have a lot of hard work to do.. Lets get to training and hit the track hard coming into the second half of the Season.

Volume 4, Issue 16 We had had some success recently and after the holiday break, we came up against the ladder lead- Pg. 27 ers and undefeated Palm Beach. Looking at the team on paper and even with a couple of fellas miss- ing, I was quietly confident that we had the beat them. From the opening bounce we were ham- mered. Our pre game focus of being first to the footy flew out the window as we were made to look second rate. We played from behind, didn‟t man up, over possessed the footy, if we could pick it up, because we fumbled that much, we panicked when we had it. When we did actually manage to hold on to the ball and manage to hit a target, we looked a very capable team There in lies a problem too. When we set team rules, we need every single player to follow them so each player knows what his mate is going to do. It breaks everything down to basics which, if we do these things correctly, the rest will follow. We also more importantly, need to remember that we are playing a contact sport. We had far too many players going in one handed, tapping at the ball, reaching in for it. We were jumping early for the ball, going for marks one handed with our head down which was kind of interesting. It was blatantly obvious from the sidelines and was pretty ordinary to watch. Our forwards were behind from the start, slow and tentative. It was as if we were waiting for them to make mistakes and drop the ball. These teams don‟t do this.

We did have some solid efforts from a few boys. Ethan was being tagged by 3 different players and still never gave up. Val in the ruck kept soldiering on and Bondy on the ball was throwing himself in and getting crunched but kept getting back up.

We had Lachie Fava smashing in hard and was really putting in until he went back over his leg and unfortunately broken his leg. We all hope you get better soon mate. We will miss your hard hits, good clean hands and protein smells. Zane was our best player today. He gave his opponent hell all day and was probably our only clear winner. Noah, Dicko, Steve and Tyse had a lot of ball flooding back as our midfield were belted and did everything they could but sheer weight of numbers didn‟t help them. As a coaching group we didn‟t see this coming. If there is any benefit it would be that we have time to correct it.

Lets ALL get to training and fix this. Thanks to all our helpers and supporters. We will need you next week again.
