BILL STICKELLS (1898-1970) SELLINDGE WORLD WAR I VETERAN

Bill spent his early childhood at Rock Cottages, Stonehill, later moving to a cottage behind “The Swan” (more recently “The Mucky Duck” and now demolished). He joined the army in 1916 serving, with the Suffolk regiment, on the Western Front and came home to Sellindge in 1919 suffering shell-shock and the effects of having been gassed.

Bill went on to marry Gladys and together they lived at Spring Cottages behind the Co-Op, then at Lees Cottages (now part of Downs Way) and finally moving to a bungalow at Greenfields.

During the Second World War Bill served in the Sellindge division of the Home Guard. He worked as a gardener at Port and Sellindge Vicarage and loved to grow flowers, particularly dahlias, in his own garden.

His son, Bernard, still lives in Sellindge with his wife, Elsie.

At this time of the 100 year commemoration of the start of The Great War it seems a fitting tribute to share his photo and story with his fellow “Sellindgers”.

SDC CLLR MRS JENNY HOLLINGSBEE 812 066 / Mob 07887 918 458 / [email protected] Recently I visited Age UK at to answer questions on Council Services for older people. It was a very interesting session with lots of issues being raised on Revenues and Benefits, Housing, Waste Collection, Lifeline and general customer services. The participants found this very useful and have asked me to return to talk to them again towards the end of the year. Age UK Hythe and Lyminge are keen to make local residents aware of the range of services they have on offer. Further details from www.ageuk.org.uk/hytheandlyminge Council Officers attend daily meetings with the Police and I attend when possible, as this is an excellent forum for discussing local issues and to work in Partnership. Under the new Policing structure, there are neighbourhood police teams that can be directed to a particular area if a problem occurs. KCC are reviewing ‘Children’s Services’ and along with my counterpart from Dover, we organised a Children’s Summit for different agencies and partners to come together and discuss a range of issues. This was well attended and another session is planned shortly. I attended the production of Treasure Island at Sellindge Primary School and would like to congratulate the children for a most entertaining performance. They were brilliant and thanks also to the staff for their tireless work with the children. Well done to all. On August 4th, Prince Harry will be unveiling the Commemorative Arch on The Leas in at 11 30 am. There will be a procession of Military Bands and Regiments and Civilians from The Metropole to the Harbour, which will pause at The Arch for the unveiling. There is a full programme of events during the day and, and an evening parade with people holding candles will take place from The Leas Cliff Hall again heading towards the Harbour. All candles will be extinguished at 23 00 (11pm), exactly 100 years ago to commemorate the declaration of war followed by a 2 minutes silence. The darkness and silence will then be broken by a flare set off from the beach. For further details www.stepshort.co.uk

The weather in June was variable with wet or dry days and bright or dull days. The total sunshine hours were 25% up on average with day temperatures 0.5°C above normal for the month. Most rain was very minimal except on Sat.7th. Total rainfall was 35.306mm (1.39in) from 12 days some 27.23% below the June average. It was the third consecutive month with a below average figure. 3 SPEEDWATCH!

The Speedwatch Training session on 17th July in the Village Hall was a great success, with 16 people attending from 3 villages including Sellindge. Guy Rollinson from Maidstone talked to us with that rare combination of humour and knowledge, and Sue Covus was on hand as support. The number of volunteers is increasing but there's always room for more! We are planning to have another training session in a month or two: it takes about an hour and then you're ready to go. You can do as many or as few hours at the roadside as you like or can spare, and hi-vis-jackets are supplied. If you'd like to join us, please call Susanne (07958 308125) or Linda at the Parish Council Office (01303 813271).

FROM YOUR KCC COUNCILLOR Susan Carey, Member for Elham Valley, KCC – 01303 670 561

Your District Councillor, Jenny Hollingsbee and I often see each other at events and a particularly memorable one on 22 June was the launch of the Shepway Sports Trust at Three Hills Sports Park (next to Morrisons in Folkestone). The Sports Park opened in March 2013 and boasts two cricket pitches, two artificial pitches for hockey, a sports hall, a gym and a clubhouse. The land for the Sports Park was given by Shepway District Council and the principal funding for everything else came from local resident, Sir Roger de Haan. The Roger de Haan Charitable Trust is behind a further initiative to encourage people to find a sport they like to do and for everyone to do more sport and this will be done through the Shepway Sports Trust. The event included taster sessions of many sports and demonstrations by leading sports people such as Bike triallist James Sheridan and boxers Josh Kennedy and Barry Pluck. Highlight of the day was an attempt to break the Guinness World Record for a chair dance (a chair dance is simply a dance done in unison by people as they sit). Jenny and I joined in with 271 others to beat the previous record of 271 set in 2011 by participants at Riverside, Missouri, USA so we are now world record holders. I also attended the Sellindge Parish Council meeting on 08 July (no dancing) and hope to join the litter pick planned for 26 July. I have been asked for a grant towards the cost of second ramp to help access to Sellindge Village Hall which I shall be supporting. Every Kent County Councillor is allocated grant funds for community projects and in our area both the District Council and Parish Council also support community groups and projects with grants so it’s always worth asking for help if you have a good cause. At County Hall we have started work on KCC’s budget for the next three years. We have a reasonable idea of what our income and our costs will be for 2014/15 and an expectation that whoever wins the 2015 General Election that we will continue to face reduced funding. This is because despite all the talk about austerity we are still spending more on public services than we raise in income and this is forecast to continue till 2018/19. This in turn means we are continuing to add to the national debt which in 2012/13 stood at £1,185 billion or to make it personal £18,606 per person in the UK. I will be writing more about the financial challenge ahead in future reports and asking for your views on what Kent County Council’s priorities should be.

SELLINDGE GARDENERS' ASSOCIATION

Those members present at the July meeting of the Gardeners were very well entertained by Helen Taylor who gave a talk and demonstration on Painting Poppies. Helen started her demonstration with a completely blank piece of paper and then went on to produce a very charming painting of her subject for the evening - Poppies - all the while explaining, with some wit, how to introduce various shades of one colour and how to mix paints to produce the colours you want in your work. Members were able to ask questions all the way through and also at a question and answer session at the end of the demonstration. Helen was given a really warm round of applause at the end of her stint. The Chairman asked members to put up posters to advertise the club's

Annual Summer Show to be held in the Village Hall on Sunday 17th August at 2.30 pm - Entrance Free also to spread the word with their friends and neighbours about the event. The next Club meeting will be held in the Durling Hall 7 for 7.30 pm on Wednesday 20th August when the evening will be spent discussing the Show and any ideas for the future. At present no names are available for Refreshment duties so two volunteers will be required on the night - something we never seem to have any problem with. If any non-members feel they would like to come along to any of the Gardeners' meetings they will be most welcome to do so and will be offered a cuppa of their choice - all free of charge, and they will be under no obligation whatsoever to join the Club.

SELLINDGE CHURCHES The Rectory Mersham.

Dear Friends – As we approach the summer holidays I am reminded of a reading in Mark’s Gospel. In fact in Mark chapter 6 verse 31. The Disciples have just returned from a busy schedule of teaching and healing and Jesus says to them ‘come with me to a quiet place and get some rest’ Unfortunately for Christ and the Disciples it did not work out as planned as many saw them going off in a boat ‘to a solitary place’ and followed them. And by the time the Disciples landed there was a great crowd already there to greet them! Jesus had intended that the Disciples should get away for a short break to receive spiritual, physical, mental refreshment and to have a rest away from everyday pressures. I remember how difficult it is when you have a young family and are tied to school holidays, but I hope that you may all have the opportunity to have at least a short break. August is regarded as the holiday month when many activities, close down for a few weeks, but church services continue. Also, we will be preparing to celebrate Harvest and gather for informal social events, as well as continuing to arrange wedding s and Baptisms, please come along and join us of you can. In the meantime if there is anything else that I can help you with please do not hesitate to contact either myself or Richard. I hope also, that you may have the opportunity to find that remote space and rest a little With Best wishes Ian Campbell (Associate Priest – A20 Benefice)

Please let us know if we can help you in any way.
