  • The Personal Collection of Thurman Munson
The Personal Collection of Thurman Munson ne of the most rewarding aspects of this profession has been the opportunity to meet many individuals within the baseball community throughout the years. I can easily state that my initial visit to Canton, Ohio to meet with Diana O Munson was one of my more memorable, yet simple excursions. Viewing Thurman Munson’s collection within his very office is a privilege that I will recall many times in the future. The awards, significant baseballs, bats, photos, and various paper materials all provided some sort of tangible validation for the player that we all remember. By any standard, and for any era within the game, Thurman Munson’s accomplishments on the field are significant. Born on June 6th, 1947 in Akron, Ohio, Munson was a multi-sport star in high school. He attended Kent State University on a baseball scholarship and was an All-American catcher. Thurman’s pro career began with brief stints with the Binghamton Triplets in the Eastern League, and the Syracuse Chiefs, prior to being called up by the Yankees during the '69 season. Munson played so well during the remainder of the '69 season that he won the job of Yankees starting catcher in spring training of 1970. After batting .302 with 7 home runs, 57 RBIs, and 80 assists, he was named the American League Rookie of the Year. From the start, Munson’s leadership by example was apparent. His demeanor and hard-nosed style of play earned him instant respect, and ultimately, the position of team captain.

  • Pine Tar and the Infield Fly Rule: an Umpire’S Perspective on the Hart-Dworkin Jurisprudential Debate
Pine Tar and the Infield Fly Rule: An Umpire’s Perspective on the Hart-Dworkin Jurisprudential Debate William D. Blake, Ph.D.1 Assistant Professor Department of Political Science Indiana University, Indianapolis (IUPUI) [email protected] Abstract: What is law? Though on its face this question seems simple, it remains an incredibly controversial one to legal theorists. One prominent jurisprudential debate of late occurred between H.L.A. Hart, a positivist, and Ronald Dworkin, an interpretivist. While positivism, at its core, holds the law is a set of authoritative commands, Dworkin rejects this reflexive approach and instructs judges to incorporate and advance communal norms and morals in their decisions. In baseball, umpires utilize both legal theories, depending on the type of rule they are asked to interpret or enforce. I conclude that, like umpires, most citizens are not dogmatic about either legal theory. 1 I wish to thank Justice George Nicholson of the California Court of Appeal for encouraging my participation at this Symposium. I am eternally grateful to former Major Leaguer Jim Abbott for taking the time to respond to my questions. Finally, to the 13 year-old pitcher whom I discuss in this paper: your courage and enthusiasm are inspiring, but, for Pete's sake, please practice coming set. Electronic copy available at: http://ssrn.com/abstract=2403586 Bill Klem, one of the 2 first umpires inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame, once wrongly called a runner out at home plate. A lucky newspaper photographer snapped a shot, which demonstrated Klem’s mistake. The next day, reporters demanded to know how the batter could be out in light of the incontrovertible photographic evidence.

THE PENNSYLVANIA STATE UNIVERSITY SCHREYER HONORS COLLEGE DEPARTMENT OF JOURNALISM Extra Innings: Examining the Pace of Play Problem with America’s Pastime DAVID M. BAUER JR. SPRING 2021 A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for a baccalaureate degree in Journalism with honors in Journalism Reviewed and approved* by the following: John Affleck Knight Chair in Sports Journalism and Society Thesis Supervisor Russell Frank Associate Professor, Department of Journalism Honors Adviser * Electronic approvals are on file. i ABSTRACT This thesis examines the slowdown and changes in action regarding pace of play that has occurred in Major League Baseball over the past 100 years. It demonstrates the correlation between the problematic decline in baseball viewership and the pace of play slowdown and examines hypotheses for why this slowdown may be occurring, including advances in mid-game advertising and commercialization, a shift in focus toward offense, the advent of sabermetrics and other advanced stat-keeping implemented by teams to better their odds of victory, and changes in player behavior in the time between pitches. Ultimately, this thesis concludes that behavioral changes, brought on by both advanced analytics and monetary incentive, are the primary explanation for the lengthening of the average baseball game over time and the shift toward inaction-based plays. It also identifies possible solutions that Major League Baseball could implement to help solve its pace of play problem, including the implementation of a pitch clock, encouraging action-based plays like stolen bases, and, ultimately, amending the state of distrust between the league and the Players Association. ii TABLE OF CONTENTS LIST OF FIGURES ...................................................................................................
