HAGEDORN CONTINUES TO BUILD MOMENTUM TOWARD 2018 VICTORY Republican congressional candidate Jim Hagedorn of ’s First District surged to within four-tenths of one percent of defeating incumbent Democrat Tim Walz in 2016 (Walz 169,074 – Hagedorn 166,526). Though outspent by more than 4-1, Hagedorn ran the second closest Republican challenger race in the nation. Had only 61 voters in each of the district’s 21 counties flipped from Walz to Hagedorn, southern Minnesota would have a new Congressman. Following the election, Hagedorn persevered and started campaigning fulltime for 2018. Subsequently, in late-March, Walz announced he would not run for reelection to Congress. With Walz out and the seat “open,” MN-1 has been transformed from “safe Democrat” to the best pick-up opportunity in the nation for U.S. House Republicans. Hagedorn’s strong campaigning has generated positive momentum, including: • The National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) has targeted MN-1 for pick-up and recently named Hagedorn as a Young Guns “Contender.” • Hagedorn decisively won the Minnesota First District Republican Party’s endorsement on the first ballot, 218-60 or 76%-21%. • The Friends of Hagedorn Committee has raised over $637,000 to date, with $330,000 cash on hand. • Hagedorn has continued his signature retail campaigning across the First District. During 2017 alone, Hagedorn walked in 50 parades, attended all 21 county fairs and made hundreds of Main Street campaign stops across southern Minnesota. • National political pundit organizations Inside Elections by Nathan Gonzales and Larry Sabato’s Crystal Ball shifted MN-1 ratings from “Safe Democratic” to “Toss Up” and call MN-01 the best GOP pick-up opportunity in the country. The Cook Political Report moved the First District from R+1 to R+5. Decision Desk HQ rates MN-1 as “Leans Republican” and the top GOP pick-up district (of 194 held by Democrats) in the nation, with a 73% probability of Republican victory. • The Republican Party is unifying behind the Hagedorn campaign, as evidenced by endorsements from distinguished national, state and districtwide GOP officials and activists.
