RED HILL VALLEY PROJECT (RHVP)

FACT SHEET: QUEEN ELIZABETH WAY (QEW) CONSTRUCTION

The City of Hamilton and the Ministry of Transportation (MTO) are working together to design and build the Red Hill Valley Project (RHVP) and make extensive improvements to the Queen Elizabeth Way (QEW) between Burlington Street and the Red Hill Valley Project/QEW . This includes understanding the impacts this work may have on residents, businesses, recreationalists, motorists and the ecology of the area, and ways to mitigate those impacts. Studies completed as part of this Project are posted on the City’s website at www.hamilton.ca/rhvp.

1. What will be happening in the QEW area in the coming months?

September 2004 to Fall Re-alignment of Van Wagners Beach Road and Confederation 2004 (stage 1) Drive and relocation of water intake pipe. QEW/RHCE interchange grading and structures; installation Fall 2004 to Summer of high mast lighting in the vicinity of the QEW/RHCE 2005 (stage 2) interchange; and creation of stormwater management ponds. QEW widening; construction of a noise barrier for residents north of the QEW in the Nash Road area; extension of the noise barrier for residents north of the QEW and west of Summer 2005 to Burlington Street; re-configuration of the QEW/Burlington Summer 2007 (stage 3) Street interchange; completion of the QEW/RHCE interchange with paving; creation of stormwater management ponds; and creation of new fisheries and wetland habitat.

2. When during the day/week will the work take place?

Work will generally take place from Monday-Friday, 7am-7pm, except where QEW lane closures are only permitted at night (some weekend work will be required).

3. Will I still be able to access the Waterfront and drive on Van Wagner’s Beach Boulevard during construction?

Yes. The Ministry of Transportation will ensure that the area will remain accessible for pedestrians and motorists traveling to the area.
