“There is no greater love, than to lay down one’s life for one’s friend.” John 15: 13 p. 4 MARK’S JESUS TODAY’S READINGS Mark’s Gospel is the shortest and tersest of all four. An Act of Spiritual Communion My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.

SIGNIFICANCE of BOWING

A bow signifies reverence & honor shown to the names or event being mentioned. We are to do the following: 1) A bow of the head is made when the three Divine Persons (the Trinity) are named together and at the names of Jesus, of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and of the Saint in whose honor Mass is being celebrated. 2) A bow of the body (a profound bow) is made during the Creed with the words “and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man.” —General Instruction to the Roman Missal, #275 FEAST OF FAITH What Is the Mass? There is no simple answer to that question. The Church uses p. 5 many different images and terms to describe our most important prayer. The Mass is the celebration of the Eucharist, a Greek word that means “thanksgiving.” It is the Lord’s Supper. It is the Breaking of the Bread. It is the memorial of the Lord’s passion, death, and resurrection. It is the Holy Sacrifice, in which the sacrifice of Christ on the cross is perpetuated. It is the holy and divine liturgy, the sacred mysteries. It is the source and summit of our Christian lives, the new covenant, the work of the Holy Spirit, the paschal mystery. The many dif- ferent words and images that we use when we speak of the Mass are not signs of confusion, but of wonder at what the Catechism of the (1328) calls the “inexhaustible richness” of the Eucharist. The Mass, our greatest prayer and our deepest mystery, is celebrated every day, many times a day, the world over. The Eucharist is both “bread from heaven” and “daily bread.” The Mass is our everyday miracle. Corinna Laughlin, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

CHRISTMAS GIVING TREE

We are once again collecting for the Christmas Giving Tree Program. There will be special Christmas Giving Trees set up in the narthex of the main church entrance beginning the weekend of November 28. The special gift tags hung on these trees will suggest the age and gender for whom you can donate a Christ- mas gift. You will also find a gift suggestion sheet at the information tables. We ask that you return the unwrapped gift(s) with the attached gift tag(s) to St. Maximilian the weekends of De- cember 5-6 & December 12-13.

If you know a parish family who needs help or if you would like to adopt a parish family in need, contact the parish office at 281-955-7324.

The Christmas Giving Tree supports Catholic Charities, Mission of Yahweh, Casa Juan Diego and our own parishioners who are in need during this Christmas season. Don’t miss your chance to bring joy and Christmas blessing to families in our community. JOY OF SHARING

THE IMAGE OF OUR OF LADY GUADALUPE

Feast Day of Our Lady of Guadalupe Friday, December 11 (Vigil of Dec. 12) Confessions: 5:45 pm-6:45 pm 30 minutes after 7 pm Mass 6:30 pm Serenade 7 pm Mass

“A great sign appeared in the sky, a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars. She was with child . . . .” — Revelation 12:1-2

“The four-and-a-half-foot-tall image of Our Lady of Guadalupe imprinted on Juan Diego’s cloak in 1531 depicts a young pregnant woman encircled by rays of sunlight.”

“With her dark complexion and mixture of indigenous and Spanish features, Our Lady of Guadalupe represents the unity of all people. She gazes downward with the tender, loving expression of a mother gazing at her child.

“For Mexico’s indigenous people, the image contained rich symbolism.”

“Clouds — In the image, the Virgin is surrounded by clouds, showing that she is from heaven. The indigenous greeted people they believed came from God with the expression: “Among fog and among clouds.” Sun — There are three suns represented in the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe. The first sun, not visible in the image, is cosmic, casting light on the Virgin’s left side and creating a shadow. Golden rays from the second sun, behind her, signify that she is the “Mother of Light” and greater than the Aztec sun god, whom she eclipses. The third sun is represented by the four-petaled flower on her tunic, indicating that she is about to give birth to the “Almighty Sun.” Cross medallion — Around her neck, Mary wears a gold medallion engraved with a cross. For indigenous people, the medallion symbolized , so the medallion around Mary’s neck meant that she was consecrated to Jesus. Hands — The indigenous people expressed prayer not only by the hands, but by the whole body. In the image on the tilma, Our Lady of Guadalupe is shown in a position of dancing prayer, with her knee bent in movement. Mantle and tunic — Mary’s rose-tinted, flowery tunic symbolizes the earth, while her turquoise, starry mantle represents the heavens. The mantle also indicates that she is royalty since only the native emperors wore cloaks of that color. Black ribbon — The black ribbon around Mary’s waist shows that she is expecting a child. For the Aztecs, the trapezoid-shaped ends of the ribbon also represented the end of one cycle and the birth of a new era. Flowers — Nine golden flowers, symbolizing life and truth, adorn Mary’s dress. The flowers are made up of glyphs representing a hill and a river. The indigenous people considered hills the highest points of encounter between God and people. Viewed upside down, the flowers take the shape of hearts with arteries coming out, representing life, which originates from God. Four-petaled jasmine — The only four-petaled flower on Mary’s tunic appears over her womb. The four-petaled jasmine represents the Aztecs’ highest deity, Ometéotl. While Ometéotl remained distant, the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe shows that the one true God chose to be born of a woman, making himself accessible to all. Moon — The Virgin stands on a crescent moon. The Aztec word for Mexico, “Metz-xic-co,” means “in the center of the moon.” The moon also symbolizes the Aztec moon god, fertility, birth and life. Angel — An angel with eagle’s wings appears below Mary’s feet. According to Aztec belief, an eagle delivered the hearts and the blood of sacrificial victims to the gods. The angel holds up the pregnant Virgin, signifying that the child in her womb is the offering that pleases God.” Source: Listed above. PARTICIPATE IN CHRISTMAS JOY OF SHARING 2020! One of the many Faces of DSF supported programs

Teaching, Evangelizing and Worship - DSF helps parishes in a great many ways. One of these is through Parish Pastoral Council (PPC) Training. Catholic Pastors consult pastoral councils for help with pastoral planning, seeking prudent, wise advice to better lead their parishes in efforts to build up the Church and strengthen the community. Each year two workshops are offered for training council members in the basics of Parish Pastoral Council development and in special topics of interest. Other Teaching, Evangelizing, and Worship programs are the Archdiocesan Choir, the Liturgical Commission, the Office of Worship, and the Min- istry with Persons with Disabilities.
