President’s Report

Season 2013 has come to an end. No doubt history will judge the year as being a great season for the club, a season where we remembered and rebuilt our history, a season where we built our platform for the future, a season where we achieved success both on and off the field and a season where we began the redevelopment of our infrastructure. From a numbers point of view, some of our club’s achievements in 2013 include:

 Over 200 registrations for the first time since the 1980’s  Over 75 new players to the club  25% growth in Auskick participants  Our first Under 6 side  Our first Girls side  Teams in every age group from Under 6’s to Under 16’s  Record sponsorship  All of our boys youth teams making the finals  Two of our youth teams making the Grand Final  Our first Division 1 Premiership since 1991

Whilst these achievements are fantastic, the most satisfying reflection I have of 2013 is how every player that represented our club displayed the characteristics that make our club special – respect for our team mates, the umpires and our opposition, sportsmanship and playing in the spirit of the game. It is these traits displayed by our players and their families that make our club a wonderful place to enjoy and learn the great game of Australian Rules Football.

In the 2013 season we have had some 205 players registered with our club. We increased our team numbers from 11 to 14.5. From the under 6’s through to the under 16’s our teams showed great “Bulldog spirit”. The senior team of our club, the Under 16’s, led the way in Bulldog Spirit, refusing to concede their season was over when all looked lost. After sitting ninth mid-season they rose from the ashes to eventually finish third.

I would also like to congratulate our two Under 12 teams for reaching the Grand Final in their respective divisions. This was an outstanding achievement, which emulated the achievements of our 2011 Under 12 Teams who both made Grand Finals. The Under 12 Division 1 side finished their year on the highest of highs, defeating the previously undefeated Aspley in the Grand Final to win the club’s first Division 1 Premiership in 22 years. A fantastic performance from our boys and a richly deserved reward for their season. The Division 4 boys lost the Grand Final by two points. However, they walked off the field as winners, with their heads high. A scoreboard only tells part of the story and does not define winners and losers. It merely defines a result.

Three of our players were invited to the annual AFLBJ awards. Our representation was equal second across the clubs. Max Clayton finished as runner-up in the Under 12 Div 1 award and Charlie Selth achieved the same in 9

2013 Yearbook the Under 12 Div 4 award. Robbie Pettis was fourth in the Under 16 Div 3 award.

Sixteen of our players also managed to make regional representative sides. Our Under 12 Captain, Max Clayton, represented Queensland and won the Queensland’s Most Valuable Player award in the Interstate Championships. A list of our representative players can be found at the back of the report.

Whilst it is important to celebrate success, we must not become a slave to it. We remain focussed on what makes our club so great. We are a family based club, which strives to provide a positive environment for all of our players to improve themselves, not just as footballers but as young members of the community. When I look back on the season overall I think we should be very proud of how our teams have developed and the young children and teenagers that make up our club have thrived. This is a reflection on the teaching environment provided by our coaches, as well as the positive nature of the families who make up our great club. But we are far from perfect, and where we do fail an individual, we will acknowledge our failings and ensure we learn from them.

Auskick Our Auskick programme was again a success. Around eighty young children were introduced to our great game, enabling us to form our first Under 6 team. It also gave a significant number of our junior and youth players the opportunity to develop leadership skills by acting as assistant coaches under the guidance of “Happy”. Catriona Labrom did a great job looking after the off field activities after taking over from Rohan Teasdale mid-season. Thank you Rohan for the great job you did over the 5 years you spent organising the off-field administrative activities of the program.

Junior Football Our junior teams all played some great football throughout the season. These teams are the future of our club, and we look forward to seeing the players grow and develop as footballers over the coming seasons. From the unbridled innocence of the Under 6’s, through the learning phases of the Under 8’s, 9’s and 10’s into the “finishing school” of Under 11’s before the players enter into the competition phase of their sporting lives, all of our players and teams did themselves proud.

Youth Football All of our youth teams played finals, which was great. Each team had its own special story. The Under 12 Div 4 side welcomed nine players who were new to our great game, lost their first 3 games of the season before winning 10 in a row and ultimately the minor premiership before making the Grand Final, in which they were defeated by a mere 2 points. The Under 12 Div 1 side beat all comers except Aspley heading into the Grand Final. The Under 13’s looked unlikely to get a team together, but discussions with Jindalee saw us form the Jindalee Bulldogs and from having no team we went to being semi-finalists. The Under 14’s were dealt the tough challenge of playing in the McDonald’s Cup and 10

2013 Yearbook acquitted themselves magnificently early in the season before stumbling in the second half of the year. Finally, the Under 16’s looked gone for all money, languishing in 9th position after round 8 before they before they got on a roll to finish the season in 3rd position.

Club Umpires One of the leadership opportunities provided by our club is the club umpire programme. Our umpires again did a great job this year under the tutelage of Danny Smith. I can say without fear of contradiction, our club has the best club umpires in our region. This is not just our opinion; this is recognised by the AFLBJ umpiring officials as well. Congratulations to all the boys involved in the programme and Danny for his great leadership of the programme.

Coaches and Team Managers A special thanks to our coaches and team managers. To recognise these most important people, we have introduced a Coach of the Year and Team Manager of the Year Trophy this year. It was great to see how much their efforts were appreciated by our members, with no less than 7 of our coaches and 6 of our managers receiving nominations.

Volunteers To get our teams on the ground each week, the coaches require much support from team managers and other volunteers. Whilst we are trying to do everything as professionally as we can, it is the volunteers within the club that enable us to operate each week. A big thank you to all of you!

Running a football club certainly can prove challenging at times. The contribution of the team behind our on-field teams has been excellent. To all members of the committee, a big thank you for your support of the club and the contributions you have all made in 2013. Unfortunately, three members of the committee this year have indicated that they will not be able to continue in their roles. On behalf of the club, thanks a lot for your efforts over the last couple of years. This opens the way for new people to get involved, so we would love to see some of our members come forward and get involved in running the club, either as part of the committee or by taking on a role outside the committee.

Sponsors In 2013 we reached record sponsorship levels. I would like to thank Astute Financial (Brad Wood), Queensland Combined Orthopaedic Surgeons (Rob Labrom), Judson’s Financial Services (Ian Judson) and Total Generators (Andrew Donald) for their major sponsorships. I would also like to thank our other sponsors RBC (Cam Bulley and Scott Fern), Premier Dance Academy (Tanya Whelan) and Mercer and Mercer architects (Craig and Narelle Mercer). Your contribution to our club has been much appreciated. Finally, a special thanks to Cr Peter Matic for the financial and community support they provide our club.

Facilities At the conclusion of the 2012 season, we undertook some activities which have significantly improved our playing surface. This was rated as one of our biggest improvement opportunities in our 2012 member survey. We again conducted our member survey in 2013 and our ground was rated as one of our best features. We will continue to manage the ground closely and are looking at some options to further improve the ground’s drainage. The 2013 survey again reinforced to the committee how important it is for us to upgrade our off-field facilities. We are now working through this process, and most likely will start with upgrades to our change rooms and toilet facilities. We have had some plans drawn up for a two stage redevelopment, and are currently undertaking the process of getting the necessary development approvals. After we have received development approval, we can pursue funding alternatives to enable our club’s facilities to be upgraded to the standard expected in the 21st Century.

History, Traditions and Trophies This year we have started to bring back some history and traditions into our club. We have had many great traditions, such as the Owen Backwell Medals, the 100 game board and the Golden Bulldog Award. We have invested in a new trophy cabinet to display many of our old trophies. However, what was missing was more recent trophies to display. With this in mind, we have decided to introduce, or in some cases reintroduce, a series of perpetual trophies to be displayed in perpetuity in our trophy cabinet. Our children will be able to dream of winning one of the trophies, or reflect in their Under 16 year at the win they achieved as part of the Most Improved Team when they were in Under 9’s. To promote true club ownership, we have asked our club members to submit nominations for these trophies. The response has been overwhelming. For the five club member nominated trophies, we received over 50 nominations. Thank you to everyone who put in a nomination. The trophies we have introduced which will be awarded on trophy day this year are:

 President’s Trophy – awarded to the club champion  Vice-President’s Trophy – awarded to the club champion runner-up  Most Improved Team  Junior Team of the Year  Youth Team of the Year  Keith “Happy” Wallis Trophy – awarded to the coach of the year  Team Manager of the Year

As well as these trophies, we have also decided to turn two existing awards into perpetual trophies as follows:

 O.A. “Occa” Johnson Trophy – awarded to the clubman of the year  Junior Clubman of the Year

All perpetual trophies trophies will be displayed in our fantastic new trophy cabinet.

Partnerships 12

2013 Yearbook

In 2013 we formed two partnerships to assist our club and our game to grow. These complemented our existing Joint Venture with the University of Queensland AFC (UQAFC) to form the Red Lions Bulldogs Under 18’s.

We also formed a partnership with Jindalee to field an Under 13 side and two girls teams. I would like to thank the Jindalee club for the support they provided our members and where circumstances dictate, we will again look to partner with our neighbouring clubs. Of course, this will never be the starting point, but if it is necessary to secure a team for our children to compete in, we will again follow this path.

We also formed a partnership with Nudgee Junior College (NJC), which we had hoped would be mutually beneficial to both the school and our club. From a club point of view, we could not have been happier with the involvement of the NJC Under 10 team within our club environment, and would like to thank Brett Cashmere and the parents of the team for ensuring the success of this pilot and engaging with our club. With this success, Nudgee Junior College has decided to explore the path of forming their own club as they transition to Ambrose Treacy College. Whilst recognising the opportunities to potentially attract new players to the code, it is my belief that schools should form partnerships with clubs to provide more regular competition where school based competitions are unable to provide that. This can be done successfully, as we had done with NJC this year. I believe the partnership what we are trying to develop with NJC is the best way to go to secure the growth of the code. The support a club environment such as ours is able to provide the schools in forming and maintaining teams is crucial for the long term success of these programs. We will continue to work with NJC in an attempt to get the best possible outcome for both the school and our club.

Changes to Queensland Football The landscape of Junior and Senior football in Queensland has entered a period of significant change.

 The Game Development department at AFLQ has been restructured. This has not necessarily been to the benefit of our club, as we have been split in half with five of our key schools being serviced by the Southern region and the remainder of our schools and our club itself being serviced by the Northern region. This is a poor outcome for us which is not conducive to our ability to engage with these schools. We are undertaking discussions with the Game Development department at AFLQ in an effort to secure a better outcome for our club. On the positive side of things, Game Development is shifting its focus from securing participation via Auskick and other programmes into converting these participants into “community footballers”. This shift in focus should assist us in our recruitment efforts over the coming years.  The representative football model is also changing, with the Brisbane West team no longer existing. We are zoned as Brisbane North. There will be two Brisbane north Under 14 squads, but only one Under 16 squad. The Met West and Met North programs remain unchanged.

13

2013 Yearbook

 The NEAFL competition has been restructured, with only two teams from the Brisbane area participating. The QAFL is being re-formed as a 10 team competition. Our Under 18 Joint Venture partner, UQAFC, has applied for admission to this competition. If they are successful, it will be a great outcome for our club, enabling us to provide a fantastic player pathway into either elite level football or community level football depending on individual needs. The great advantage UQ provides as a player pathway is that it will potentially offer both levels of football. Very few other clubs are able to offer this.  At the time of writing, there is also a review of how the older age groups (Under 16’s and Under 18’s) will be structured in 2014 and beyond. Potentially, there may be a change from the Under 16/18 division to Under 17/19.

We will continue to work hard to ensure our club is positioned to capitalise on the opportunities that change presents and to provide all players the best possible sporting experience we can.

Finally, I look forward to an even more exciting 2014. We will look to grow on what we have achieved over the last couple of years. The strength of our club will always be in the positive environment it offers our players and the opportunity it provides them to develop as footballers, leaders and people. Our committee will continue to foster this environment and we encourage all of our members to invite their friends down to our club to share enjoy the great game of Australian Rules Football.

Yours in Football Ian Selth President WJAFC September 2013

Auskick

Keith “Happy” Wallis Auskick coordinator

Each Friday evening during the season, Auskick heralded the start of the weekend fixtures. This year we had over 70 children enrolled in Auskick and it is testament to the strength of the program that most continued throughout the 14 week clinic.

From our Auskick clinic, we were able to form an under 6 team who you can read about later in the yearbook. Additionally some joined the under 8 teams during the season. A highlight for 18 children was heading to the Gabba for the half time mini games at the Brisbane Lions versus St Kilda match. Liam Martin accompanied the squad as our club umpire. After their warm up in the rooms below, they played like true Bulldogs in front of a huge crowd.

Happy Wallis, as our Auskick director, introduced the fundamentals of Australian Rules Football to our youngest members beginning with basic skills and progressing to the modified mini games. Happy has built a formidable team of coaches who assisted throughout the year consisting of Darren Smart, Chris Tison, Sam Mulherin and Alex Bateman from AFLQ. Junior club members Caitlin Barrazza, Hamish and Nick Buntain, Angus Campbell, Mitch and George Labrom, Liam and Jack Martin, Chris Smith and Samuel Stafford supported the senior coaching team. It is wonderful to see these boys and girl coming down each week to give back to our club.

The atmosphere around the clubhouse was terrific with the canteen and BBQ catering to the large crowd. Thank you to Jodie Martin for her brilliant running of the canteen each week, our BBQ masters, Maurie Hand, Phill Mulherin and Steve Wootten, our canteen helpers, Helen Buntain and Karen Barazza.

The Auskick program continues to thrive in its current format and I would like to sincerely thank Rohan Teasdale for his very significant involvement over the past 5½ years. Thanks to committee members Trudy Braybrook and Ian Selth for their assistance throughout the year. Thanks to Blaec Ablett, Development Coordinator from AFLQ

Finally thank you to the Auskick parents who have supported the club and our clinic this year. We hope your child has enjoyed the experience and learnt new skills during the season. We hope to see you back next season as fully-fledged Bulldogs playing fixtures or another year of Auskick.

Under 6

Coach: Andrew Groom Manager: Matt Goudie

Having joined the league halfway through the season the Under 6’s had a short but thoroughly enjoyable season. The team played a total of 6 games with the first quarter dedicated to a short skill and warm up session followed by the remaining three quarters of football played in three zones. Thanks to Happy Wallis and his team of Auskick assistants the team already had a good understanding of playing such a format, a developing skill base and at the very least knew to stop at the whistle.

Development of the team was strangely noticeable from week to week with each team member improving in all aspects of footy, identifying the zones and understanding the rules. However the most impressive quality of this group was the willingness and desire to share the footy through the team, when combined with pre-game welcome wrestles, this appeared to help the boys form relationships quickly and gel together as a team.

The young team showed great sportsmanship and respect for all opponents by the customary shaking of hands and three cheers for the opposing team. The boys took great pride in getting to know the club song at the end of each game. Most games our boys, usually lead by Alex, gave an unprovoked three cheers for all the helpers whilst on the field which was a first according to the other coaches/managers. A proud moment displayed by some fine young boys on their own accord.

A very big thank you to team manager, Matt Goudie, who organised the parents, players, water, oranges and snakes to each game and covering for me in our last game. Of course, the U6’s wouldn’t have happened this year if Trudy Braybook and Ian Selth hadn’t persisted with finding a team and organising the troops down for the first game. Thanks to both.

Finally, a thank you to all the parents for having smiles on your faces and helping make the footy happen whenever required. It was fantastic to be involved.

Thomas Chalk Tom is full of energy and moves quickly around the ground becoming a bit of an on ball magnet. He’s also developed quite a handball that was very useful contributing to ball movement through the team. He played the games in great spirit, is a real competitor on the field, always has a smile on his face and enjoyed the team environment. Great work Tom.

18

2013 Yearbook

Alex Costello Alex was a real surprise packet. Week to week, Alex improved significantly in his understanding of the game and application of that understanding was excellent. No doubt the timing of the Auskick games contributed to this. He was an outstanding captain on his turn, managed the only organised team line onto the field and seemed to enjoy leading the team. Another player who was keen to share the ball with teammates, has a developing set of skills with a great left handball and by game three was instinctively leading into space. Well done Alex.

Joe Goudie Joe arrived with the most complete set of footy skills of the group. A great kick, ability to take a clean mark and he even had a clean running bounce in one game! Joe helped the team greatly by consistently looking and kicking towards a free teammate, which lead to more of the same from the rest of the team. Joe is full of enthusiasm and has a love of footy. The leader of the team song!

Jordi Groom Jordi enjoyed the competition and teammates immensely. With a developing skill set, he enjoyed chasing the ball in space and work in the ruck. His kicking improved with each game. Like all the boys Jordi used teammates effectively by sharing the footy. He positions himself well in defence and enjoyed his Saturday morning pre-game wrestles with the boys. Good on you Jordi.

Maximus Liberatore Max is another with a love for footy and competition. He has a big kick, can take a nice chest mark and loved the half-time orange so much we began having oranges at the end of each quarter. The instigator of the pre-game wrestle in the dew before the game he quickly became an entertaining part of the team enjoyed by all. He was the finisher in our cleanest piece of ball movement during the season that went something like ruck hitout, handball to Joe who kicked to Max moving into space, took the mark and kicked the goal. Sounds nothing spectacular except the entire play was clean and quick with the ball only hitting the ground from the ruck! Thanks Max, well done.

Samuel Philpot Sam seemed to enjoy the games and in particular the team environment. He was exceptionally thoughtful of his teammates and another who always wanted to share the ball. Sam developed his skills quickly over the games and shows a good understanding of the rules in U6’s with good natural defensive positioning. Keep the kicks long Sam!

Under 8 White

Coaches – Paul Greaney and Mark Matijevic Team manager – Kara and Adam Campbell

The Under 8 White team worked hard at training and played enthusiastically in every game, resulting in an inspirational season of football. Almost all the boys were playing their first year of AFL and the improvement over the year was remarkable. Their energy was infectious for all involved. Especially pleasing was their encouragement of each other and their team spirit. The strong friendships within the team and impressive skills development have formed a solid foundation for this team to achieve great results in the years ahead. Thank you to all the boys for making this season so fun and enjoyable and the parents who pitched in to help make things run smoothly. A special thank you to our team managers Kara and Adam Campbell who were incredibly efficient.

Hugh Andrews Hugh showed real strength as a player. Hugh threw himself in to the game and his skills development was inspirational. He stamped his presence in every game, especially in marking, with many marks showing extreme courage, particularly when challenged by many bigger boys. Hugh will be a great champion of the future.

Lincoln Campbell Lincoln is a player who has all the skills required for the AFL game. Lincoln is a very good kick of the ball and has an ability to run when our team had the ball, ensuring his team-mates could rely on him to be positioned well for the next kick. Lincoln is a key part of this team and a leader within the club.

Joseph Greaney Joseph is a natural forward. Joseph inspired the team by consistently kicking goals, including a couple of bags in some games. Joseph's passion and enthusiasm for AFL is reflected in his confidence and skills as a good runner, kicker and contester of the ball. Joseph shows real team spirit and has a big future in AFL.

Yenn Huynh Yenn was one of our big improvers. He runs very well and took a number of good marks. He has a knack for being where the ball is. Yenn is a great team player and is always looking to get the ball to a team member in a better position. Yenn was passionate at training and has real enthusiasm for the game.

Taj Lyndon Taj showed real brilliance in a number of games and his natural running ability was an asset to the team. He took some great marks and his determination when playing the Maroon team was a game many supporters will not forget. Taj is a good mark of the ball and positions himself well defensively. Taj is another key part of this team and encouraged his team mates. 22

2013 Yearbook

Josef Matijevic Josef is a real ball winner who seems to know where the ball is going, and a great midfielder. Joe showed he has all the skills and uses the ball well. Joe fights hard for the ball and is always found at the bottom of a pack. He has real passion for the game and works hard in training and in games. Joe is one of the team leaders and always encourages his teammates.

Joshua Turnbull Joshua is a strong defensive player who has the ability to take a good mark, run well and can hit a target with his kicking. Both on and off the field, Joshua's team mates are drawn to his very likeable personality. Joshua consistently showed flashes of brilliance on the field and as his confidence continues to grow. Joshua will be an impact player next season!

Harrison Philpott Harrison was a big improver this year and is a big game player. The better the opposition team, the harder Harrison plays. And when Harrison fires up, he takes the whole team with him. Harry's determination in competing for the ball is inspirational. He also has a strong kick and is an integral part of the team.

Ben Olsen Ben had an injury interrupted year, but he fought hard towards the end of the season to establish a solid skills base. Ben showed an ability to take a mark in a pack and was rarely beaten when involved in a ruck contest. Ben was a good friend to all players and encouraged his teammates.

Ewan Parker Having played previously, Ewan's skills helped to inspire the whole team. Ewan is another natural forward who kicked multiple goals on a number of occasions. Ewan fights hard for the ball and on some occasions got the ball when nobody would have given him any chance. Ewan is a good mark. He trains hard, plays hard and is a key part of this team.

Sean Turnbull Sean is a real barometer for the team. When he plays well, the team plays well. He is a good runner, strong mark and competes hard for the ball. He has a strong work ethic and his improvement over the season has been particularly pleasing. He is a good friend to his team mates and offers encouragement at any opportunity.

Under 8 Maroon

Coaches: Andrew Donald and Syd Stewart Manager: Ruth Kelly

The U8 Mighty Maroons Team had a fun year of football. As it was a totally new team, we focussed alot on basic skills, team mateship and later in the year moved to game awareness and structures. We made some good friends along the journey and both coaches are hopeful we can keep the team together for 2014 to enhance what we developed. Our thanks to the parents for their consistent appearances and support each week and special thanks to Greg Booker for his “side line observations” that you can’t always see from the inner action.

We have listed all players individual highlights from the season and have saved the biggest “thank you and well done” for our boys, the mighty U8 Maroons who started the year as a timid inexperienced group of boys with no wins then ended the year with four wins from four last games and full of confidence, skill and game awareness.

Player Comment…

Findlay Booker Most effective in the Midfield. Strong centre clearances and was able to remain on his feet so he has good balance. Some impressive timing on the run made for good footy. Very team focussed and a solid trainer who was polite and respectful of the coaches. Fin has a mighty kick that will develop more with time.

Blake Swanson Skills developed well at training and his marking was his strength. Blake’s height meant he was superior with the ruck taps and fed the ball to his players well. Good work Blake!

Addison Edmonds This was Addison’s first year and he was a great team player. His strength was without doubt his defence pressure and tagger role we asked of him. He was a committed player to the team strategy. His big development was in hand passing. Great work Addy!

Edward Donald Ed was an Auskick graduate (as with most) and really enjoyed playing in a team. He was keen to reward other players good effort and developed a great kicking style. He enjoyed playing forward and as the year progressed became more understanding of the game and aggressive at the contest. A great season Ed!

26

2013 Yearbook

Henry Stewart Henry was our all-round solid player and likely Best & Fairest if we had one. He has a good kick, and developed good mark, handpass and was able to later in the season execute bounce & run & carry game plan. He kicked many goals and was a big contributor to the team. Well done H !

Sam Kearney Sam has a natural football understanding and this was valuable to the team, probably from practice with his brother! He was a great kick and was very good with instructions following the team plan. Sam played his best football in the forward zone and was good at reading the play, going after the ball with confidence. Well done Sam it was a pleasure coaching you!

Riley Swanson Riley worked to improve his skills at training and developed his kicking and marking well. He was most affective in the ruck with his height and at times was a confident defender. Riley also kicked some memorable goals and showed great development for the future. Well done Riley.

Lucas Norman Lucas burst into our team as a strong ruckman, big player with a big heart. He developed great skills at reading the play and getting to the ball first. He became more confident with chasing the ball as the season progressed and was a pleasure to coach as he listened and followed the team plan. Great having you Lucas on the team!

Thomas Walsh Thomas was a confident player from the start as his older brother was also at Wests. He developed an exceptional marking skill and was also a B&F contender. Thomas was terrific at applying pressure to the opposition, kicking goals and we focussed on his body work in the contest at training. We were really pleased with Thomas development and he responded well to being coached. Well done Thomas, you are a great player !

Elliott Smart Elliott was a late addition to the team but his influence was what the Maroons needed. Elliott added speed, ball skill, solid kick and footy understanding (from his dad!) to the team. He was strong in the forward line, calling for the ball and reading the play well. He became an immediate key player for Maroons and was a pleasure to have in the team adding more experience which contributed to our late season charge. Good on you Elliott!

Hope to see you all in the Mighty Maroon Jersey again in 2014 !!

Under 9 White

Coaches – Max Wise and Shane Whelan Team manager – Kara Campbell

The Under 9 White Team had a great year of football. A number of the boys were able to stay together from last years Under 8 (White) Team and their numbers were bolstered by some very skilled new arrivals from interstate. The boy’s enthusiasm and energy for both training and playing was excellent and they achieved a consistently high standard of play that opposition teams struggled to match during the year. Thanks to all the boys for making it so enjoyable and the parents who pitched in to help make things run smoothly, particularly Kara Campbell who again took on the Team Manager role. Thanks also to Stuart Giles for running a number of joint training sessions with the two Under 9 Teams.

Player comment…

Lachlan Scroggie Lachie had a very impressive first season with the club. After a quiet start he developed into one of the team’s strongest and most reliable marks and a very effective tackler. As his confidence and positional play continues to improve he will develop into a real handful for any opposition. Great job Lachie!

Angus Campbell Angus’ talk on the field (direction of team mates) was a new string to his bow this year. His positional play was also very good, resulting in him becoming a regular ball winner and constant threat in the forward line. Well done Angus!

Joshua Campbell This year Josh built very well upon the persistence, attack on the ball and confidence to run that he showed in the Under 8’s. Gasps were often heard from spectators this year as Josh was seen winning the ball from stoppages and wrong footing the opposition with multiple dummies and spins. Terrific season Josh!

Ryan Forrester Ryan’s ability to take and action instructions at training and his persistence and determination in games made him a dream to coach and meant he was often in space and available to support his team mates. It also meant he achieved another strong and consistent season for the team. A great season Ryan!

Thomas Pfitzner Tom was new to the club this year but from the first game was a major ball winner both in the air and at ground level. His balance when kicking on the run was exceptional and his raking left foot kicked goals from all parts of the forward line. As the season progressed, Tom also began bringing team mates into the game. Great effort Tom!

30

2013 Yearbook

Aidan Walsh Aidan was also new to the club this year and, like Tom, quickly became a major ball winner. Aidan took a number of very strong overhead marks and competed hard for the ball at ground level every time. He also showed great confidence running the ball and hand passing to team mates. Well done Aidan!

George Labrom George continued to work hard this year to win the ball. He led well when in the forwards and showed excellent development in his positional play and focus in defence, resulting in him winning the ball across the ground. Top effort George!

Oscar Russo This was Oscar’s first year with the club. He showed great pace and attack on the ball, so won lots of possession. As Oscar’s skills with the ball develop he will become a real handful for opposition teams. Well done Oscar!

Samuel Stafford Samuel’s confidence continues to grow on the footy field – this year he was often one of the louder voices offering helpful advice to team mates and reminders about the coach’s instructions, which was excellent to hear. He continued to show great enthusiasm at training and during the games and this year again took some strong marks. Terrific effort Samuel!

John Whelan This year John was able to add excellent positional play to his already strong and reliable marking and kicking, meaning he was often in the right place at the right time and available as a target for his team mates. Being in the thick of the action throughout the season also meant John was able to kick a number of goals. Top effort John!

Felix Wise Felix continued to enjoy his footy and the company of his team mates this year, but in deciding to move up from Under 8’s may have traded some time in possession of the footy for time with his mates. Felix kicked some early season goals and is a very strong contender for mark of the year. He was most at home when playing in the centres and will win more ball as his positional play develops across the field. Well done Felix!

Under 9 Maroon

Coaches – Stuart Giles and Kyle McHardy Manager – Libby Prescott

It was an absolute pleasure to coach the Under 9 Maroon team at Wests Juniors in 2013. With an exciting blend of team-mates who had learnt their football together under Jenny Conrad in the Under 8’s the previous year and some great new recruits we had the fantastic core group of 10 players listed below who turned out for us each week. We were also very lucky that Alex McGrath doubled up regularly during the year to join our team when his Under 10 fixture allowed and his teammate Cooper Rivers also became a semi-regular in our line-up as the season wore on. Thanks to both these boys (and their parents) as well as the other Wests players who helped share the load by giving us a full team list of 12 for almost every game during the season.

The improvement the boys made over the course of the season, both individually and as a team was an accurate reflection on the enthusiastic and energetic approach they brought to each and every training session and game for the year. The cohesive, high quality brand of football they produced in the final game of the year against Sherwood was the perfect exclamation mark on a wonderful year, made even better as we then all jumped in the Gold Hummer for our End of Season Trip to the Gabba later that night to cheer the Lions on to a big win over the Giants !

Thanks to all the boys for making it such a great year and all the parents who supported everything we did. This off field effort was ably led by Libby Prescott who co-ordinated everything in her own, inimitable style as Team Manager.

Finally can I pass on a huge thank you to my good friend Kyle McHardy who, despite having no direct familial affiliation with any of the boys playing, regularly stepped up at relatively short notice to take training or handle the match day coaching role when my work or travel commitments required.

Luke Prescott Luke really improved as the season progressed, particularly with his positioning for the ball and his strong leading out of the goal square as a marking option up forward. He was always willing to throw his body in to the fray to try and win possession for the team and relished the contest each week.

Eden Channon The sight of Eden’s curly blond locks disappearing into a pack and then appearing out the other side with the ball in hand was a constant feature of our play for 2013. As the season wore on Eden’s use of the ball by hand or foot improved enormously resulting in tremendous rewards for his tireless efforts.

2013 Yearbook

Nicholas Conrad Nicholas had shown excellent development during his time as an Under 8 player for Wests and I am pleased to report that he certainly continued along the pathway to becoming an excellent key position player this year, using his height to great advantage to take countless marks whether in defence, the midfield or up forward.

Noah Russell Noah really blossomed as a footballer as the 2013 season wore on, gaining more and more confidence to win his own football and then distribute to his teammates. This culminated in a fantastic goal in the final game of the season which his teammates celebrated by coming from everywhere (including out of their own playing “zones”) to enjoy the moment with him.

Samuel Giles Sam Giles loves a goal and the 2013 season provided plenty of opportunities for the Maroon Under 9 supporters to enjoy his trademark celebratory fist pump. Elsewhere around the ground Sam was always prepared to run to space to give his team mate an option whilst his ability and willingness to win the contested ball was definitely his area of greatest improvement during 2013.

Dominic Byrne Dominic was one of our most improved players in 2013. He started to really show an innate understanding of how the football game flowed which he matched with a fearless attack on the ball and excellent skills to become an increasingly effective and valued member of the team.

Jack Fewster Jack is a tremendous young footballer who could be relied upon to have a significant influence on the play in whichever zone he was located. As the season wore on Jack become far more adept at using both handball and his long kicking game to the advantage of his team-mates further afield which was an excellent string to add to his bow.

Oscar Leeds Leedsy joined our team this year for his first run with Wests and certainly lived up the hype surrounding his arrival. Highly skilled (on both sides of the body by the end of the season) and able to win the football with ease and bring his teammates into the play he was also a pleasure to coach.

Harrison Herd Harrison was another who really blossomed as the 2013 season went on. He developed his hold and release tackling and associated pressure to be the equal of any player in the team and then started to find more and more of the football himself. His goal in the final game was another wonderful moment celebrated by all the players and supporters.

Tom Tracy Tom joined Team Maroon this year and became an invaluable member of our line-up week in and week out with his strong attack on the football and tireless running complemented by excellent football skills. This strong competitive streak on field was balanced by a lovely polite manner off field and made Tom an absolute delight to have as part of the team in 2013.

Under 10 Wests - Nudgee Junior

Under 10 Wests - NJC Coach: Ben Smith Manager: Brett Cashmere, Brett Vacher

The program co-created by Ian Selth saw NJC and Wests come together and form a team of boys from NJC Indooroopilly play under the Wests banner. This relationship was fantastic for both sides as it gave our Year 4 boys an opportunity to play sport. The opportunities that were provided to our boys by the Wests Club enabled many of them to further develop their skills in the U/11 teams as well.

The majority of the team were dual sport players and would often finish at our game and rush off to their next commitment. Also, of the 14 regular players, 10 of the boys were new to the game of Australian Football. If enthusiasm and enjoyment were qualifiers to winning games, this team had it in spades. Our theory was always that we would struggle in the first 6 weeks and then explode in the last half of the season.

Ben Smith, Old Boy of NJC, took on the coaching role this season and was able to provide something parents and teachers could not. He was the cool one. A fantastic bond was developed between Ben and the boys and he was able to get the best out of the boys each and every week. Ben was the secret weapon that every other team envied. He was a great role model for the boys and it was a huge commitment on his part to give up his Saturday Mornings for 15 weeks of the year.

All parents were fantastic and supportive. The season was of my most enjoyable due to the wonderful attitude and humour that they brought to each and every game.

Overall, a wonderful year experienced by all involved in the team. This “Pilot Program” has been an unqualified success.

Here are the players:

Jack Tapley Jack was one of our most improved performers throughout the season. He was also one of our youngest players, being eligible to play for the U/9’s. As the season progressed, Jack’s game awareness and smarts started to develop and he was one of the most team first oriented players. Just as he was peaking, the season came to an end. Looking forward to watching “Tappers” continue his development next year.

2013 Yearbook

Oliver McAvoy Oliver was one of the many rugby converts that we attracted to our team. He was signed and ready to play for Kenmore, when the opportunity to play for Wests-NJC proved too great. Oliver is a good Key Position player who thrived as the defensive midfielder. His positioning at Full Forward always gave us a target to kick to and was one of the more difficult players for the opposition to match up on. Great season Ollie-Boy

Riley Tillotson One of the many duel sport players in our team and probably our most naturally gifted. He was able to perform tasks on the footy field that takes years to master and he was pulling them off, for the sole reason, because he could. A tall, energetic and athletic player, he would always end up with the best opposition player on him and would often lead them a merry dance around the field. Looking forward to seeing Tillo take some speckies next year.

Tom Ziebarth A wonderful player who stood out due to his height and blonde hair. Despite his height, you would often see Tom diving on the ball and wrapping it up. Another duel sport player who was always committed and keen to play for the Wests-NJC team. Always found himself in the right place at the right time and his kicking skills have improved out of sight. He was the Z factor that the team needed and the opposition wanted.

Sami Walsh The human calculator who was able to keep score, even though the coaches didn’t. One of the younger players in the team who was also eligible for U/9’s, had a distinct advantage over his team mates in that he had 2 years of football under his belt. A good overhead mark and a reliable kick for goal made Sami one of the most valuable players in the team. Was willing to use his voice to organise his team mates during games.

Sam Smith The younger brother of Coach Ben was given no favours. His speed was blistering and many times we had to run water out onto the field to put the fires out he was starting. Sam has developed like abilities to scoop the ball up off the ground at full speed. Once in the clear, no one could get near him. Towards the end of the season, he had developed a like palm to ward off would be tacklers.

Cameron Burgin Without doubt our most improved player through the year. Continued to play the game and train with a smile on his face and it was fantastic to watch him get his kicks each week. Cameron could always be depended upon to chase and put pressure on the opposition when they had the ball. His efforts could never be faulted and will continue to improve with the more games he plays. As his confidence grows, so will Cam’s.

Louis Hunter Louis is one of those boys who just loves sport and is very coachable. Another one of the duel sport players who would run through a brick wall if it got between him and the ball. Louis would have loved the tackle rule to be introduced to U/10’s. A booming kick and deceptively quick player, who picked up the skills and nuances of Australian Football quickly. Was instrumental in recruiting Easy to the game.

Josh Vacher A must have for your Dream Team. A hard-nosed and determined player, Josh would throw himself into the bottom of the pack, and come out scurrying with the ball in hand, looking to kick long. He loves the physicality of the game and with some fine tuning of his disposals, he could become a future rep. player. You often felt sorry for the opponent assigned the task of trying to keep up with Josh. Celebrated his 50th game for Wests in the final round with the Calculator.

Laith Machin Laith was a first year player with a soccer and wrestling background. Needless to say, Laith struggled in the first couple of weeks with the no tackle or slinging rules that are imposed in the U/10’s. Laith is one of those players who has white line fever and goes hard and fast at the ball. You often felt sorry for his opponents as they had no way to nullify or beat him due to his exceptional ability to read the play and willingness to do whatever it took to get the ball.

Will Juillarat Will was a mid-year recruit as he started at the school in 3rd Term. Formerly a Sherwood player, “The Rat” retired briefly at the start of the year to pursue a Rugby career. After filling in for Happy’s, Wests U/10 team, against his old mates from Sherwood, he was always going to return to his true passion. He made a blistering debut against Moggill where he took “Mark of The Year” and always presented himself in front during all marking contests. He had footy smarts and was a valuable addition to the team.

Oscar Erzetich Another dual sport athlete who has developed a Karmichael Hunt / step that left many an opponent left lying on the ground, not quite knowing what had occurred. “Easy” was another mid- season recruit and made a brilliant debut in which he kicked four goals, the last two to win us the game. He has a wonderful kick, although you were never too sure in which direction it would head. Played the game as it should be played, with a smile on his face and brought a sense of fun to the team.

2013 Yearbook

Tom Kearney Captain Kearney was the experienced head that a team of rookies needed. His advice and help to his fellow players was essential in games. Whilst not the fastest player in the team, his pure gut running to each contest often left his defenders exhausted after 5 minutes. A smart and intuitive player, he would always give his best, even if he had to back up for a second game. One of the few players who knew our victory song and would always lead it with gusto.

Tom Tracy The youngest member of our team and another first year player. Tom would often play for the U/9s and then back up and play for his future school. Tom was never afraid to mix it with the older and often bigger boys and was often rewarded for his bravery. T.T. averaged a goal a game for the U/10’s and was another one whose skills improved as the season progressed.

Top up players Throughout the season, we had a number of boys from other teams play for us. Thanks to Oscar Leeds, Marcus Berehulak, Hamish Buntain and Charlie Selth for helping out when required.

Coach: Keith ‘Happy’ Wallis Team Managers: Juana Harris & Natalie Hunt

The most pleasing thing about the Under 10 team this year is the way the boys came together and played as a team. Seven of our team played together last year and with a couple of late registrations, two WA interstate moves and some new to the game the team moved into a cohesive strong group by season end. The new team members were welcomed with open arms and fitted really well into the team.

The pleasing thing for the coaches was seeing the boys develop. They all have a sense of team and always showed a willingness to help out a mate.

Towards the middle of the season their discipline really started to show and that produced fine displays on the field. During the season, we were lucky enough to have a couple of the boys play in milestone games. Sam Hunt, Archer Wood and Baxter Wise all played their 50th games.

With special thanks to our coach ‘Happy’ Wallis for helping the boys pull together into a great team and for our manager Juana and Natalie for organising us each week. A big thank you also to the parents for getting the boys to training, games and helping out with the rosters each week.

All in all we had a great year and the boys have really done us proud.

Lincoln Fox: With a strong family history in AFL Lincoln took to the field with great gusto. With an ability to play in any position, he was able to get some great goals and still manages to be humble. Thanks for your contribution Lincoln, look forward to seeing you next year!

Benjamin Good: With strong hands, an ability to read the game and plays great in the ruck Benjamin always gives 110%. His discipline in training translates to the field and makes for a great player.

Daniel Harris: Continued to improve this season, good in the ruck and plays very well when focussed. Well done Daniel.

Sam Hunt: Sam has continued his commitment to football even when he is rushing to and from basketball games. A natural player, Sam continues to be a great asset to the team.

Jack McCabe: A late registration for the season (after much pestering from school mate Archer), Jack has an ability to move quickly and with a big kick has seen Jack become a valuable team member. 45

2013 Yearbook

Alex McGrath: new to our Club after moving from WA, Alex is a quiet achiever. Don’t let the quietness fool you. Alex is always 100% committed to the play and has been a great addition to our team.

Dan Meggitt: A natural all rounder player with great skills. 100% commitment and a willingness to listen and learn, Dan is always a great asset to the team. Thanks Dan for another great year.

Paddy O’Toole: new to the game Paddy has grown in leaps and bounds this season. Paddy gives 100% and his skills in all areas have grown this year with a couple of goals at season end. Thanks for your contributions Paddy, can’t wait to see what you can do next year!

Cooper Rivers: another new member to the Club hailing from WA, Cooper has been a great contributor to our team. Always willing to listen, with fast legs and an ability to read the game Cooper has fitted into the team seamlessly. Great job Cooper!

Nicolas Snedden: A natural player, Nicolas excels in all areas and can play in any position. Always managing to be in the right place at the right time Nick has had some great games this season. Well done Nicolas, you’re a great asset to the team.

Gus Rayson: another new team member, new to the game Gus has improved in leaps and bounds this season. An expert at being a ‘turtle’ – if he has that ball he doesn’t give it over, Gus has been a wonderful addition to the team. Well done Gus!

Baxter Wise: a milestone season of 50 games and Baxter continues to develop as a player. With some great plays this season Baxter has had some great games. Thanks Baxter!

Archer Wood: continues to be one of the smallest players but the 110% commitment to the job at hand means that is overlooked. Archer has continued to develop this season in all of his skill areas and his love for the team shines through as the boys sing the club song at the end of each game. Well done Archer!

Hamish Buntain: a late addition to this team this season, but a long standing member to the Club Hamish was a valuable asset to the team to round out the season. Thanks Hamish!

2013 Yearbook

Under 11 White

Under 11 White Coach: Ian Selth Manager: Scott Kiel-Chisholm

The Under 11 Whites continued to play the great brand of football they have over recent years. The four new players who joined the team this year were quickly integrated into the team style of play. No challenge proved to be too great for the team, who displayed great skills and understanding of the game. The boys again displayed outstanding sportsmanship and played within the spirit of the game at all times.

Their selflessness was a characteristic of how they played, always looking to bring their teammates into the game and share the ball amongst each other. Coast to coast goals and quick ball movement were again features of the team’s game, really relishing in being able to play on when the opportunity presented itself.

This year was the first year without zones for the team, and we focussed on team structures. The team adapted well to this and proved to be very good at maintaining their positions and learning the various roles of defender, midfielder and forward.

I would like to thank Scott Kiel-Chisholm who did an outstanding job as team manager, keeping team members informed of what was happening and organising the volunteers required to assist the team each week. A big thank you to our runners, Josh Hunt and Ian Judson, who always delivered the words of encouragement from the coach to the players with great distinction. A special thanks also to Rob Labrom for looking after the team’s first aid at home games. Finally, to all the parents, thanks very much for bringing your children to training and games and helping out on game day and the support you have given me as coach over the last four years.

It was again a pleasure to coach this team.

2. Mitch Labrom Mitch is fast becoming the complete player. He is equally adept working both inside and outside the packs and has developed his kicking and handballing skills to a high level. A natural competitor, he is rarely beaten in a one on one contest and with his excellent disposal skills he is able to impact a game like few others. Primarily a midfielder, he is also equally adept up forward or in defence and has a bright future.

49

2013 Yearbook

Milo Hunter Milo is now in his third season and it was undoubtedly his best. He brings a unique energy to the team, and has developed his game to a level where he can be relied upon to win one on one contests and deliver the ball to a teammate. His marking skills really improved this year as he confidence grew. If there was a trophy for most improved in the team, Milo would have been right in the running for it. Keep up the great work Milo!

7. Jack Ryan Jack joined us this year from Moggill and really settled into the team quickly. Tall and athletic, Jack provided a lot of run to the team and displayed excellent goal sense when up forward. Jack possesses an excellent kick and was able to play as a running midfielder as well as a tall defender. Jack possesses all the tools to be a standout player as his consistency grows. Well done Jack, you had a great season!

8. Bayley Judson Bayley continues to excel as a footballer. Whether it be at Centre Half Back, in the midfield or as a goal kicking forward, Bayley can dominate a game like few other players. His marking is a highlight of his game. However, this year he added the full array of “one percenters” to his game – tackling, shepherding and smothering all being added to his repertoire to become the near complete footballer. Most importantly, his game was characterised by his team ethic, where he always looked to bring other players into the game. He has all the tools to go a long way as a player.

9. Tom Evans Tom was injured early in the season and missed the first part of the season. Upon his return, his disposal skills were a bit rusty, but his ability to run and carry was prevalent. As the season wore on, his penetrating kicking skills returned. He plays his best football as an outside midfielder and an attacking run and carry half back. His great ability to read the play also enables him to provide an x-factor up forward, as he did in the last game of the season where he was the clear standout player on the ground.

10. Charlie Selth Charlie has developed a big motor which enables him to run the whole game out. He has become an outstanding inside midfielder, with his competitiveness meaning he rarely gets beaten in a contested situation. He always brings his teammates into the game through his excellent handballing and short kicking skills. A ferocious tackler, he now needs to develop his long kicking and his ability to play as a small forward or small defender to round out his game.

50

2013 Yearbook

Ryan Daniskevicius Ryan was a new player to the team this year, having played in the Under 11 White team in 2012. Ryan had an immediate impact on the team, with his elusiveness and goal sense being very prevalent. As he settled into the team, Ryan developed some excellent defensive skills and also became a great team player, always looking to bring other players into the game. Ryan possesses the rare ability to find space and time in congestion and has a very bright future as a footballer.

13. Alex Blyth Alex was a former Soccer player who decided to join his mates at Wests this year. Alex showed an excellent ability to win possession of the ball as he picked up the game through the season. As he improves his kicking skills and works on disposing of the ball quickly, Alex will become a successful footballer. He managed to impact on the scoreboard on occasions throughout the year. Keep up the great work Alex!

14. Christopher Kiel-Chisholm Chris continues to improve his game each year. A natural athlete, he has always been able to compete well. This year he has significantly improved his ball skills – kicking, marking and handballing – which enabled him to improve his effectiveness as a player. He performed very well as both a midfielder and defender throughout the season and would be another who would be right in the running for most improved.

15. Ben Kennedy Ben joined the team early in the season as an “international rookie” from Singapore and from game one showed his potential. After three weeks, it was hard to believe Ben was a new player as he started to fill key roles at Centre Half Back, Centre Half Forward and in the midfield. Ben soon took the team ethos of sharing the football into his game as he continually set up the play for his teammates. What a great debut season Ben!

18. Jack Martin Jack is a great contributor to the side and over the course of the season, became the team’s standout defender. Relentless in the pressure he places on the opposition, he was able to marshal the defence and his judgement on when to attack the ball and when to wait back was outstanding. Whenever he went forward Jack could always be relied upon to kick a couple of goals and provide a great target for the team to kick to.

19. Will Hunt Will played as the team’s full forward for most of the season. His excellent kicking and marking skills meant he was a natural in this position and provided a great target for players up the field. Will was also able to perform well as both a ruckman as well as in defence. His standout game came late in the season when he rucked against Sherwood to give us all an insight into his future, as he

51

2013 Yearbook possesses all the tools required to become a very good ruckman as he improves his mobility.

Under 11 Maroon

Coach: Jon Atherton (aka Atho) Manager: Fiona Kearney

Prologue from Atho… Wests U11 Maroons started the season strongly and didn't let up, dominating every game whether it was on the scoreboard or just in sheer effort. Our team showed that being a few men down doesn’t hurt, particularly when we are assisted by keen eligible players from the other age groups. Our boys should be proud of the way they conducted themselves again this year - I’m very confident that they are going to bring great credit to Wests in future years.

With the same core of strong players that have played in the Maroon side for several years being supplemented by a strong supporting cast, I don’t have room to list all of the players various skills. Suffice to say that they have taken on board many of the attributes of senior AFL stars - which is very entertaining for all those watching from the sidelines. I’d particularly like to thank our “ring- in” squad, because without them we couldn’t have had anywhere near as much fun!

As always, coaching these guys remains one of the highlights of my busy week, hopefully we’ll see them all back next year. Thanks to all the players and parents for another great year.

Supplementary Comments from one of Atho’s Assistants… Thankyou John for coaching our team again this season, you did a great job and we love your competitive spirit.

Thankyou also Fiona for the great job you did as Team Manager. Not an easy task making sure we had enough players each week and keeping everyone organised.

Boys, great season, a few tips for the summer:  Whenever you think of it at home, grab your footy and kick the ball to yourself 100 times, first on one foot, then on the other. Then hand pass the ball to yourself 100 times, first using one hand, then using the other.  Play another ball sport in the off-season, e.g. cricket or water polo.  Get yourself fit, e.g. by swimming or running.  Come back next season ready to give U12 youth footy a big effort.

Player Profiles…

Advaith Suresh Advaith is one of the veterans of the team and is a true student of the game. Advaith reads the play well and is a very unselfish player who does his best to bring his team mates into the game – very good qualities for a footballer to have. Unfortunately Advaith supports Fremantle .

Anthony Caprioli Anthony joined our team this year and generally played as a key position player, utilising his very good kicking and overhead marking skills to good effect. Anthony helped us win many games even though we weren’t keeping score. A suggested improvement is that Anthony stop supporting Carlton.

Ben Bartlett Ben joined our team part way through the season and played limited games due to a serious arm injury. Sorry we didn’t get to see more of you this year Ben but hopefully next year will be different – keep up the basketball too.

Hamish Buntain Hamish has been playing above his natural age group in our team for a number of seasons, he has a good footy brain and is a great team member. We lost Hamish due to injury early in the season and were very pleased to see that towards the end of the season he made a courageous return to the game in the U10s. Look forward to seeing you next season Hamish – providing it doesn’t clash with basketball.

James Ledingham James is an unassuming but committed member of the team. He shows up to every training session and game and plays his role to the best of his ability. Footy is a game where hard work and commitment can get you long way. We look forward to seeing your confidence continue to grow next season James.

John Heales JJ is naturally very athletic with good kicking and marking skills. When he gets the ball in space JJ can be a very damaging player and had some great games this season, often playing at a key role in the forward line. Keep your fitness up over the summer JJ and looking forward to seeing you have another good season in the U12s next year.

Marcus Berehulak Marcus is a good athlete whose kicking style was corrupted by rugby for a while but we are slowly turning him around. Marcus is most effective running in space with the ball in hand and would make a good tall wingman in the U12s, perhaps in the mould of Dipper.

56

2013 Yearbook

Matthew Van Rooyen Matthew has the size to play in the ruck or hold down a key position, his marking and kicking are now becoming his key strengths. Matthew has steadily improved as his confidence has grown and will be an important player in the U12s next season.

Rupert Wells Rupert plays his best footy in the midfield, where he can use his running endurance, work ethic and determination to good effect, a bit like Hawthorn’s Johnny Platten used to. Rupert is consistently amongst our best players each week.

Samuel Atherton Samuel has a strong physical presence, which, combined with solid marking skills, makes him a good key position player. When he gets fired up, Samuel has great leadership qualities that rub off on his team mates. Perhaps a future Jonathan Brown.

Thomas Kearney Thomas loves his footy and it shows in the improvement he made this year. Thomas’ reading of the ball in flight and marking in the forward line was very noticeable towards the end of the season and made a big difference to the teams scoring ability. Thomas typically warmed up for our games with a light game of rugby and then an U10s AFL game. Thomas is a big Cats fan and might be a future .

Tom Campbell Tom is a natural ball winner who can generally be found at the bottom of clearances and who thrives on second and third efforts. He uses both sides of his body, can play anywhere on the ground and loves bringing his team mates into the game. He models his game on Hawthorn’s Luke Hodge, he could do a lot worse. Great season Tom.

Players from Other Teams We had some great players from other teams play for us throughout the season, we loved having you guys in our team. A big thankyou to: Bomber Bolton, Lachie Ford, Harry Leeds, Alex Guy, Connor Bulley, Josh Vacher, Louis Hunter, Laith Machin, Oscar Erzetich, Sami Walsh, Will Juillarat, Mitch Labrom, Bayley Judson, Chris Chisholm, Jack Martin and Jack Ryan (sorry if we missed anyone).

U12 White (Division 4) Coach: Ian Selth Assistant Coach: Paul Wilson Manager: Peter Snedden

The Under 12 Whites had a fabulous season. After a slow start, losing their first 3 games, they came alive to be the dominant team in Division 5 and later Division 4 during the minor round, winning the Division 4 minor premiership. At one point we won 10 games in a row, an amazing effort when you consider the team was made up of eight players new to the game, a handful of second year players, a few old hands and a couple of under 10’s and 11’s.

Our team was characterised by having a number of extremely tall players who filled most of our key positions and the ruck, and a “mosquito fleet” of very small midfielders who complemented each other very well.

The team went on to win its first final and progressed directly into the Grand Final. In the Grand Final, we fought bravely but in the end could not quite get over the line.

Wests Juniors 3-1-19 lost to Morningside 3-3-21 Best Players: Judson, Filippi, Selth, Rayson, Tracy, Campbell, Snedden. Goalkickers: Rayson, Labrom, Eustace

The boys richly deserved their place in the Grand Final. They were the most consistent team in the competition and displayed a never say die attitude, right down to the last minute of the Grand Final when they made one last desperate surge.

I can honestly say that in all my years of coaching at various levels, this year was one of the most enjoyable experiences I have ever had as a coach. To see the team grow as it did throughout the year made the journey an exciting one. Particularly pleasing was the way the team listened to and followed the instruction they were given. At times we weren’t the most skilled team running around, but we were always the most determined. I was especially proud of the boys after the Grand Final, where despite their narrow loss, they walked off the field with their heads high, proud of what they had achieved this year. You don’t have to win on the scoreboard to be a winner. The boys walked off winners, because each of them are winners.

Special thanks must go to Peter Snedden (Team Manager), Paul Wilson (Assistant Coach) and Lyle Brown (Runner), as well as to all the parents who helped out on goals, boundary, running water, first aid, canteen or ground marshall. From a team that arrived to our first game with a large group of people wondering what do we do, everyone stepped up to the plate and fulfilled the many roles that needed filling each week. Your assistance throughout the tear was very much appreciated.

2013 Yearbook

1. Connell Fox A first year player, Connell was the stand out player from the first game of the year. Two finger injuries meant his season struggled to gain momentum early, but once he was able to get on the paddock regularly, what an impact he had. He became the dominant midfielder in the competition who also displayed great goal sense, impacting on the scoreboard regularly. His ability to read the play is peerless which enabled him to pick up possessions at will.

3. Frank Rayson (VC) Frank was selected as a vice captain of the side. He possesses very good skills, with his kicking being a highlight. Frank played mainly as a midfielder and small forward, and provided the team with much spark in both roles. His leadership developed throughout the season. Once Frank develops his defensive skills, he will turn into the complete small midfielder/forward. I look forward to watching what I am sure will be a successful career unfold in future years.

4. Ethan Tracy (C) ET was one of our team’s captains. Probably the lightest player in our team, ET never put in a bad game. His work rate was always high, and whether playing in the midfield, attack or defence he always made good decisions. He has a really good ball sense which meant he was able to win high numbers of possessions on occasions. ET, it was a pleasure to coach you. You have much to look forward to as both a person and a footballer. Well done.

5. Jack Donoghue Jack was a Maroon team player who also had the opportunity to play a number of games with the White team, mainly as a midfielder rotating in defence. In his games with the white team, he always put the team first and played this role extremely well. Even when not playing, Jack would come along and support the team whenever he could. He is a true team man.

6. Charlie Selth Charlie began playing with the team to help out with numbers, as he was still eligible to play under 10’s. However, as the season progressed Charlie’s influence on the team grew and he became one of the team’s key players, playing the inside mid-fielder’s role with distinction. He showed a great deal of courage, never failing to commit to the contest and his tackling was excellent. Charlie finished runner-up in the AFLBJ Best & Fairest for Under 12 Division 4.

7. Martin Hesla Martin had been in Australia for about 6 weeks when he came down to try his hand at Aussie Rules. An accomplished soccer player, Martin took to our game like a duck to water. After a couple of games in defence, Martin was moved into the forward line, where he excelled. He developed a long, booming kick and used his size and athleticism to great effect. Martin possesses all the physical attributes to become an outstanding Aussie Rules player.

61

2013 Yearbook

8. Daniel Griffin-Sheridan Another of our first year players, Daniel possesses great ball sense. As a consequence, when he played as a forward, he almost always was able to read the bounce of the ball better than his opponent. This ability enabled him to kick goals almost every week. As Daniel continues to work on his fitness and kicking ability, he will become a very accomplished footballer. Well done Daniel on a great first year.

9. Alex Filippi A first year player, Alex is a real vibrant personality who plays football in a manner reflective of his personality – full of energy and excitement. Having moved to Brisbane from country NSW, Alex’s only previous exposure to AFL was the Auskick program as no junior competitions were available in his area. Alex enjoyed playing mainly as a running half back flanker, who in the second half of the season was able to really take the game on, using his speed, strength and long kick to advantage.

10. Gabe Brown Gabe was one of the stalwarts of our defence, always contributing to the team in a positive way. During the season he also ran on the ball and had some game time as a wingman. He could always be relied on to play his role effectively. He possesses good skills and he should be very proud of his performance this season. When he learns to attack the ball more aggressively and use his natural speed, he will really shine as a player.

11. Sam Snedden After a slow start to the year, Sam found his spot on the wing. Enjoying the open spaces, he used his excellent kicking skills to the advantage of the team on a regular basis throughout the season. When the finals came around Sam took his game to a new level. He began to win the contested football and worked hard to make position to provide options to his teammates. This new found confidence saw Sam win the Player of the Finals trophy. Well done Sam!

12. Anthony Caprioli Anthony was another first year player, who had spent many years previously practicing his skills in the back yard before coming down to play. He possesses outstanding kicking and marking skills, and as his game sense improved throughout the year, he became a genuine target up forward and kicked many goals for the team. His overhead marking was a real feature of his game, as was his kicking for goal in a team that struggled for accuracy at times.

13. Ryan Daniskevicius Ryan was another player still eligible for under 10’s. However, his youthfulness did not hide his undeniable class. At times it looked like he had the ball on a string, and whenever he gained possession it was genuinely exciting to see what he would do. He has a great ability to step around players and kick a goal, but also played some of his best football in the back line, where his tackling ability came to the fore. It will be an exciting journey for Ryan as he progresses through the ranks. 62

2013 Yearbook

14. Ethan Harris Ethan proved to be one of our most versatile players, being able to plug gaps in the forward line, the back line and as a ruckman. Whilst he still needs to develop his kicking skills, when focussed, Ethan could really impact on the game with his size and mobility. When at his best, his tackling was outstanding and this made his team mates grow around him. In particular, his smaller teammates were able to benefit from the physical impact he could have on the game.

15. Max Bucholz Maxy was another of our new players who joined early in the season. Maxy possesses a very bubbly personality and provided a lot of energy to the group. As the season progressed, his contribution to the team really improved and he became a very reliable defender. When he was in attack, he played his role very effectively. I have no doubt that Max will develop into a very good player if he can find a consistently high work rate, as he does try very hard to follow instructions.

17. Matthew Burgin Matthew returned to the club, having not played since Under 9’s. And what a great impact he had on the side! His input to the side both on and off the field was outstanding. Matthew became our team statistician and opposition analyst, providing valuable insights into our upcoming opponent. On the field, he held down Centre Half Forward for most of the year. He proved to be a regular goal kicker and always gave 110%. Matthew, it has been my pleasure to coach you this year.

18. Nick Stanojevic Nick was another of our new players. Blessed with many natural athletic gifts, Nick began to flourish as his confidence grew throughout the season and his athleticism began to give him an advantage over the opposition. A classic utility player, Nick was able to play forward, back and on the wing, the position where he most influenced games. From the solid grounding he has had this year, Nick has the genuine potential to develop into a very good footballer.

19. Mitch Labrom Mitch played as a top up player from the Under 11’s. In the games he played he was always hard at the footy and really provided a lot of drive to the team. His excellent disposal skills and ability to play both inside and out made him a stand out who contributed significantly to the overall team effort. Late in the year he gave the team a lot of run and added flexibility to our “mosquito fleet” of midfielders.

63

2013 Yearbook

20. Tom Campbell Another of the Under 11’s who regularly played in the team. Tom was an asset to the team whenever he played. Possessing skills on both sides of his body as well as a good understanding of the game, Tom mainly played in defence but was capable of impacting the game both in the midfield and up forward. His ability to read the play as it unfolded ahead of him, his ability to make good decisions and to mark in contested situations really made him an outstanding player for us.

21. Lachie Newcomb The improvement in Lachie this year was outstanding. Lachie learnt the value of following instructions and team rules, and consequently was able to contribute to the team, both in attack and defence. He could always be relied upon to try his hardest for the team and his tackling was a feature of his game each week. Well done Lachie, your efforts are something to be proud of.

22. Alex Wilson (VC) Alex was one of the team’s vice captains. He played the role of “leader of the defence” exceptionally well, always ensuring our defensive structures were maintained. The standout Full Back in the competition, Alex could always be relied on to win one on one contests. A deep thinker, Alex was also able to provide many insights into the team performance during games which helped us ensure we had the right players in the right positions.

23. Bayley Judson Bayley was a top up Under 11 player who became a key player, holding down Centre Half Back in the second half of the season. His standout aerial skills and ability to read the play gave our defence a touch of class and made the players around him more confident. Bayley’s game is not just characterised by his exceptional skills, but also his willingness to work hard, smother, tackle, shepherd and bring his team mates into the game. He is a selfless player who can play anywhere on the ground.

24. Max Heath Max was one of the more experienced players in the side, who joined the team in the early part of the season after being undecided if he wanted to play or not. He had an immediate impact on the team, providing some genuine speed and hardness at the football. Played mainly as a midfielder rotating in defence, Max was always on his game and really gave the side a huge amount of on ball “grunt”. If he works on his kicking, Max could become a top line footballer.

25. Mitch Eustace Mitch’s football really developed throughout the course of the season. Another of our athletic big men, Mitch played some of his best football as a Ruckman. He was also able to perform well at Centre Half Back or in one of the key forward positions. His confidence grew as the season progressed and he has the ability to become a very good footballer as he continues to develop his self-belief.

64

2013 Yearbook

27. Jack O’Toole (C) Another of our new players, Jack impressed from the very start. A hard worker on the track, Jack quickly won the respect of his team mates and was soon added to the team’s leadership group. Jack established himself as the team’s number one ruckman, with his bullocking work often clearing the path for our smaller players. Jack also played well when he went forward, kicking goals regularly and proving very difficult for opposition players to match up on. Jack has a big future.

30. Nick Austin Nick joined the team late in the season, after playing the early part of the season in the U12 Maroon team. He returned to the Maroon team for the finals. His impact on the White team was immediate and positive. Whilst mainly playing as a forward, he proved a capable swingman who was able to be moved into defence when the team needed. Nick was an excellent team man and it was a pleasure to have him in the team.

Top up players Throughout the season, we had a number of boys from the Under 11’s and even Under 10’s play for us.

Thanks to Nick Snedden from the U10’s, Tom Evans, JJ Heales, Will Hunt, Jack Martin, Jack Ryan and Rupert Wells from the U11’s and Andrew Vick from the Under 12 Maroons for helping us out on occasions. We loved having you in our team.

Under 12 (Division 1)

Coach: Keith “Happy” Wallis Assistant Coach: Andrew Bolton Assistant Coach: Stephen Vick Assistant Coach: Chris Tison Manager: Bill Wilson

What a fantastic year for our footy team and our great footy Club, culminating in a grand final win, the first Division 1 grand final victory for the Club since 1991.

For some years prior to this year, the Club has fielded two teams – the Maroons and the Whites. Historically, both teams performed well in their respective competitions and 2013 saw the fusion of these two sides as well as the introduction of five or so players from outside the Club. Sufficient numbers allowed for the two teams in the Under 12 competition which, after trials, saw the Maroons selection into Division 1.

As expected, there was a degree of apprehension and concern as to how well the boys would perform in Div 1. However, that apprehension and concern eased considerably after the first game which saw us lose to our nemesis Aspley in a tight one after leading throughout the game. The team went from strength to strength as the season progressed only dropping one game against Aspley leading into the finals. The boys presented as a focused group during training, willingly undertaking the tasks, both fitness and drills, assigned to them by our esteemed coaching staff lead by our senior coach, Keith (Happy) Wallis and Andrew (Hoff) Bolton, ably supported by Chris Tison, Stephen Vick and Joey Bingley. On match days, almost without exception, the boys played a hard and cohesive brand of footy, working for each other as great teams do. The Maroons boast the best defensive record of all teams in Div 1 after consigning opposition teams to only a few points for almost each match played.

A highlight of the season was our trip to Melbourne with the boys and their dads. The three day program saw us take in a blockbuster at the MCG on Friday night with Hawthorne v Collingwood, the twilight game at Etihad with North Melbourne v Essendon, a visit to the Collingwood Centre and also a visit to the AAMI Centre (home to Melbourne AFL Club, club and Melbourne Victory Football Club) as well as a training session at Gosch’s Paddock. The boys thoroughly enjoyed the weekend which was a great team bonding exercise leading into the finals.

The following weekend saw us up against Aspley in the first final having finished second on the ladder to Aspley at the end of the regular season. The first final was played at Zillmere. It was a hot day and the width of the ground was better suited to Aspley’s style of play. We were ahead at three-quarter time but faded in the final quarter with Aspley taking out the game by 7 points.

68

2013 Yearbook

The preliminary final saw us up against Coorparoo at Wilston Grange. The team came out of the blocks fast and took control of the game with a convincing and morale boosting win. The stage was set for a blockbuster finale with Wests v Aspley for the grand final on Sunday, 8 September 2013 at Coorparoo #2 oval. Before kick off, Happy, an experienced finals campaigner, settled the boys and instilled them with the confidence and belief that they could win, despite three losses to Aspley over the course of the season. As anticipated, the final was an epic encounter. Whilst we started well and got the early break, Aspley came home strong towards the end of the first quarter and lead by 17 points at the first change. By half time, Wests had got to within 5 points of Aspley and took control in the all important third-quarter, booting clear. Unlike previous matches against Aspley, there was no let up in the final quarter by our mighty team and we came home winners 7.9-51 / 6.0-36.

It will be a season long remembered by our boys and we will look back upon it with much fondness. Thanks to all those who contributed to the success and enjoyment of the season. Special thanks to Helen Buntain for her assistance in keeping the boys cool and refreshed during the final series and also to Cam Bulley for his organising of the Melbourne trip and other social events including parent catch ups.

Player Profiles

Max Clayton - Captain A leader on and off the field, Max has proven himself to be the player everyone wishes was on their team. Highly skilled with maturity and a football brain well beyond his years, Max was prolific in his ball winning ability all year. He has sublime skills on both sides of his body, and a long and penetrating kick which was used to great effect in the Grand Final. Max has a huge future ahead of him.

Nick Buntain – Vice Captain Nick is a clever and reliable player with silky skills and good decision making abilities. Nick has a great mark and has a strong competitive spirit. One of our key players, he performs well under pressure and leads by example. Congratulations Nick on a great season.

Harry Wilson – Vice Captain A performance during the grand final which saw him awarded ‘best on field’. Harry hits the ball with such ferocity, others dare not get in his way. Harry is a wonderful mark for his size and proved to be a versatile and effective player whether on the ball, lurking down back or cutting through the corridor. His head down, hard at it approach results in Wests achieving significant advantage through our clearance rate with great effect further down field.

Nick Austin Nick has been with the Club for many years and is a valuable and loyal member of our team. This year represented a serious step-up for all our players and Nick was equal Nick has been with the Club for many years and is a valuable and 69

2013 Yearbook loyal member of our team. This year represented a serious step-up for all our players and Nick was equal

Lachlan Best This was Lachie’s first year at Wests. He settled in quickly and became one of our key players evidenced by his success with rep footy. He has speed to burn, is competitive on the ball, has good hands and kick. He was brutal in the preliminary final and made a decisive contribution to our win in the grand final. Lachie has a great future in the game which we hope will be at Wests.

Sam Bolton Sam is a champion footballer – committed to the cause. It is easy to forget that he plays up a year as he has done for many years now. His skills are ever improving and he has been a great asset to the team. Solid in defence with that rangey left boot. Great season Sam.

Connor Bulley Connor had a solid role in the forward line in what could only be described as a very satisfying year of football. His ability to find the footy, stretching for an overhead mark within kicking distance of the big sticks was inspiring. He often found himself in space to weave a little magic to convert, and in finals proved himself a consistent forward player.

Quinton Cugola Quin played his second season of AFL and again demonstrated a high level of personal motivation and determination to succeed. Quin is a tough competitor on and off the field and is developing solid ball skills and game knowledge. Congratulations and well played.

Jack Donoghue Don’t upset Jack or it will be at your peril. Jack at his aggressive best is unbeatable. Amazing determination and strength over the ball with an improving skills set. You can just tell that Jack loves the game. He was consistently good throughout the whole season but great in a number of games.

Harry Douglass One of, if not the most popular player in the team this year, Harry’s no nonsense style of play was greatly admired and his skills improved significantly over the season. A selfless player who adds a lot to the team on many levels.

Nicholas Fairlie Nicholas is a veteran of the game but new to the Club. Nicholas played his first season with the Bulldogs having previously pulled on the boots for Jindalee and Kenmore, including playing in the last year’s under 12 Division 5 grand final. Nicholas is a versatile player, strong competitor and a valuable new addition to the Bulldog’s line up. Congratulations on your first season at Wests.

70

2013 Yearbook

Alexander Flintoff Freddy, as a ruckman in the 11’s last year provided us with a really serious alternative to Jake (this year when needed). His no nonsense style as the designated full back could be likened to some of the masters of our great game. With the ability to get the Maroons out of trouble, he used good aggression and prowess to propel forward movement of the ball. Freddy is one of our great unrewarded back line specialists.

Lachlan Ford Lachie played his second season of AFL this year and took some serious steps towards becoming a great dedicated forward. His ability to stand at a level above his age group was recognised by his peers. Fordy’s silky skills up front ended up with our team securing solid wins each week throughout the season proper. His ability to find space and mark solidly have been supplemented with his skilful left boot in converting on a regular basis. The final series gave Lachie an opportunity to ramp up another notch and bring home a grand final premiership with his mates. He did not let the team down.

Connell Fox Connell joined us at Wests this year with limited AFL behind him. A class player who quickly blended into the team and also became a key player. He is versatile with good hands and movement – a real asset to the team. He will quickly develop into a seriously good footballer. Great season Connell.

Alex Guy Alex is a seasoned player with a natural ability and loads of courage. Alex performs well under pressure, has a strong competitive spirit and is not afraid of a tough contest or putting his body on the line. Alex saved his best until last, producing a great performance in the grand final win over Aspley. Congratulations on a great season.

Benjamin Hunter Ben developed into a reliable and smart footballer as the season went on. Another who shone during the final series with a number of strong marks and ferocious attach on the ball. Ben revelled in the victory which showed his passion for the team and the game.

Harrison Leeds Harrison was greatly missed through the final series after a serious injury brought a sudden end to his 2013 season. After completing a power of work in the pre-season, Harrison was rewarded for his efforts by establishing himself as a prime target for the team up forward despite suffering a setback mid-year with a bout of illness and then missing out on the grand final, it was humbling to see how wonderfully natured Harrison was with the outcome on the weekend. Harrison is a talented footballer with a good footballer brain and a great team man.

2013 Yearbook

Harry Middleton With his great speed, Harry often was able to find and make space for himself and team members. A crucial goal in the grand final is a perfect example of this and was a great reward for a consistent season. Another great season for one of our veterans who simply gets better each year.

Jake Patterson Patto’s decision to cross from Kenmore to Wests was a blessing for Wests Under 12 Maroons. Strong, level headed, skilful, unassuming, dependable and respected described Jack’s footballing season. Jack is also a fine young man who we look forward to seeing develop into a great leader.

Jake Somerville Jake has a commitment to his footy that is equalled by very few in our team. His shear mental and physical toughness is frightening in opposition. The coaching staff have found him to be focussed and driven in his role as ruckman. Jake’s performance on the field never wavered and produced spectacular results as he matched up to the enemy. Jake, you played seriously good football this year and we can’t wait for your return next year.

William Trigar Whether up forward or on the ball, Will can influence the broader team’s performance through his natural ability to read the play. His performance in the grand final revealed to all his capacity to play in front and move the ball forward at all costs. Will is a strong right footer and can kick to position with consistency. He can look forward to a great AFL future.

Andrew Vick The man who hits like a scud missile and tackles like a vice. Andrew is often putting in the one per centers, while others who benefit from his hard work get to lap up the glory. A fine team man, Andrew had a year that would give him much satisfaction and something to build on. He will undoubtedly prosper as a player and a person into the future.

Coach: Jason Eldering

Assistant Coachs: Michael Bogdenovic & Justin Wells

Team Managers: Kim Donaldson (Jindalee) and Shannon Beaumont (West Juniors)

Result: Third

Overview Season 2013 saw the great relationship that has existed between West Juniors AFC and Jindalee Jaguars JAFC come together to form a combined U13 team known as the Jindalee Bulldogs with 12 Players from the Jags and 11 players from Wests.

As a group, the boys and parents all came together for a very enjoyable season that was highlighted with the team finishing third on the U13 AFLBJ ladder after the home and away season.

The goodwill and friendships that have been formed throughout the season has been the greatest enjoyment, and like “all kids sport” it is a partnership between kids and parents, and we would like to thank all the parents for their support and encouragement throughout the season.

As a playing group our goal at the start of the season was to “Get Better Each Week” and this objective was achieved, “well done boys”. The team’s improvement in general fitness, skills and their understanding of basic game plans, structures and running patterns will hold then in good stead for season 2014 . We would like to make a special mention about two young men Zane Vozvoteca who played six games and Aaron De La Rue for their support throughout the year thank you so much you are a credit to your football clubs!! To all the other players who helped out throughout the season you are great team players and your clubs are very proud of you and your efforts!!

As a team our greatest challenge for the season was learning each other’s club song and watching the boys sing each other’s club song was very amusing, well done boys!!

From a management perspective credit needs to go to Michael, Justin and Paul you have been wonderful assistances throughout the year and the administration team has been well managed by Kim Donaldson and Shannon Beaumont.

Under 14 (Division1/ 2 McDonalds Cup)

Coach: Darren Smart Assistant Coach: Mark Clayton Manager: Craig Mercer

Year Summary: 2013 brought together a group of young men who all love being part of Wests and playing football with their mates. We began training with 15 or so boys and built the number up to 22 by season start. The announcement of the amalgamation of Division 1 and 2 for the season in a new 12 team McDonalds Cup competition was accepted by the boys and each week they looked to the challenge that playing some very good football teams would bring.

The season had some ups and downs in the final results but across the board the boys always tried their best and fought hard each week. We could never fault their endeavour. The toll of not having enough depth to compete week in week out with the better teams took hold and the boys struggled to get any momentum later in the season.

I would like to thank the boys for their effort this year. Thanks for the support and help from all the parents throughout the year. I look forward to seeing all the boys running around in the under 16’s next year. I also couldn’t have done my job without the valued support of Mark and Wayne alongside Craig who managed the team this year.

Each boy brought something special to the team and the following words are a snippet of each boy.

1. Zane Vozvoteca Zane developed into a very good on baller this year. His ability to run and run and gather touches around the ground was great to watch. I have enjoyed watching Zane develop his football skills over the last 4 years. Zane is a pleasure to have around the group and to coach. Zane always gives his 100% in everything he does.

2. Thomas Smart (#2) Smarty was a dependable defender who is suited at . His kick-ins were fantastic. His love of a chat and enthusiasm for playing football or any sport for that matter is great to have around.

3. Fletcher Evans (#3) Fletcher rotated between the half back flank and wing all season. He was our Mr Dependable. Fletch always creates a contest and wins a lot of hard ball gets.

82

2013 Yearbook

4. Patrick Robinson Patrick battled hard in the forward line all season. He is developing his skills and continues to work hard at training. With some more fitness he can be a dominant force up forward, kicking plenty of goals.

5. Lachlan Barazza Lachlan is a talented footballer and has untapped potential. He provided the team good options off the half back line and as an on baller. Hopefully Lachlan will continue to play football into the future.

6. Angus McAuliffe The half of the season has shown us an Angus who is willing to work hard, fight hard and commit to win the football for his team. He has developed well this year and it is very enjoyable to see him playing hard quality football.

7. Konama Matthew Konama played 6 games this year as a BBC boarder. Konama has some good football skills and is not afraid to go in hard for the ball. I wish we could have seen him for more games.

8. Sandy Labrom Sandy has some great ability to come into a game and do some amazing things. With a little more fitness he could start to get the rewards his abilities can deliver.

9. Charlie Muir After a slow start to the season, Charlie finished the season as a good wing providing the link between the backs and the forwards. His ability to run and create options was great to see.

10. Conor Barry Conor came to Wests this year to play football with his mates. Early on Conor provided a lot of run and energy in the forward line and later on worked hard rotating between wing and back pocket. Conor was a pleasure to coach and always wants to learn.

11. Nick Verrenkamp Nick has some great football skills and was rewarded with playing in the U14 Taipans side. Nick is capable of winning the ball and always knew where to lead to receive the ball.

14. Julian Braybrook Julian was our go to man this season. He was able to match up on some of the bigger boys from other teams and nullify their impact on the game, often to the detriment of his own natural game.

83

2013 Yearbook

15. Jonathan Coates Jono provided some good opportunities up forward this year. He has a good long kick but needs to work harder around the ground to get the rewards that he deserves.

16. Jack Clayton Jack captained the team this year and always led by example. He has great football skills and great football mind. He drove the team all year to get the best outcome for all.

17. Lachlan Daugalis Lachlan is one of our quiet boys who go along with their tasks without any fanfare. Lachlan swapped between the forwards and backs throughout the season but always gave it his best.

18. Aidan Burke Aiden continued to develop his skills this year. When he switched on Aiden played very well as a ruckman who can kick goals from anywhere.

19. Liam Martin Liam was our swing man this year as he has the versatility in both the forwards and backs. In hindsight, this switching in roles may have impacted on his football from week to week. He has some great skills that can be developed over the next few years.

20. Dominic Mercer Dom continues to build his skills each year. He played in the ruck and up forward for us. The highlight for me was a snapped goal from about 30 out from a tight angle.

21. William Wilson Will was a solid member of our back 6 until he suffered a season ending injury. Will works well in the group and seems to enjoy his football each week.

22. Hainian Yu This year we welcomed back Hainian after a season off. Hainian’s pace and run from the backline provided great enjoyment to watch and drive to our team.

23. Paraka Nii Paraka was another one of the BBC boarders who played a limited role this year. Paraka has some wonderful skills and abilities that other teams found hard to nullify.

25. Christopher Smith Chris had a standout year. He played back pocket, ruck and forward pocket. Week in, week out we could always depend on Chris to compete for the ball and never give up.

Under 15 Girls Wests Jags Maroon

Coach: Andrew Wellington Manager: Mel Teasdale

The Under 15 Wests Jags Maroon team was largely made up of girls who were trying Australian Rules football for the first time. While this inevitably reflected in the scores in some of our games, the girls were a real credit to the Wests Juniors and Jindalee clubs they represented through the year.

Through the course of the year the girls made immense improvement, both in their skills and the way they competed against girls with significantly more experience.

Many weeks the girls were tested by going up against more experienced teams and we had a number of weeks where we had to play with no bench against teams continually running fresh players on an off as they had stronger numbers. At no stage did the girls throw in the towel and, most importantly, supported one another positively at all times. The girls kept a great spirit up and made sure they celebrated the positive things we achieved. I hope they learnt a lot about themselves through this and how, by chipping away at something and doing your best, you really can improve.

Our last game was a real highlight where we outscored one of the top teams in a quarter and were competitive the whole game, a 120 point improvement on the first time we played that team!

While we weren’t very successful on a win/loss measure the way the girls saw a tough season out to the end with great enthusiasm, a determination to improve themselves, with existing friendships intact and many more formed has given me much greater satisfaction than any number of winning games could have. Special thanks has to go to Mel Teasdale who put in an amazing effort all year to ensure we could field a team each week, we often scraped together the bare minimum number of players thanks to Mel chasing people and finding players from the Gold team for us.

I am also very grateful to Jess Brew who took all the mid-week training sessions for both of the JV teams and really helped the new girls get some confidence with their skills. Thanks also to the Jindalee club who worked so co-operatively with Wests to ensure that together we could field 2 teams and allowed us to introduce the wonders of Australian Rules football to a whole new group of girls. Finally thanks to all the parents who helped through the year. Given our team numbers were light we had a really high percentage of parents helping each week and they all did it with a smile. Well done all.

2013 Yearbook

Jamy Booth-McNeill Jamy would have been the lightest girl in the league so she showed a lot of courage over the season to develop the confidence to get in amongst the much bigger girls. Late in the year two passages of play stick in my mind. One when she was at full forward against a much bigger girl but she applied two or three tackles in a row in the goal square to hold the ball up and it then spilled to one of our girls for us to kick a goal. The second was against Park Ridge who are a big side and Jamy was moved into the centre and at the first bounce contest she went straight into the pack against girls twice her size, picked the ball up and fired out a handball to one of our players, it just typified how much she had progressed from the start of the year. Unfortunately an injury late in the year meant Jamy had to miss our last game but her team spirit was typified by her presence at that game cheering louder than anyone else!

Aislinn Callinan Goal sense is hard to teach in football but Aislinn has it in spades. She was probably our leading goal scorer and had a great ability to read the play in the forward line. Aislinn was equally adept at kicking the running goal or taking a mark and kicking a goal. She was another player who gave us great flexibility by being able to play forward, back and in the ruck.

Heidi Dewberry Heidi was our mainstay all year with her pace and great foot skills being outstanding. She took her game to a new level through the year and really developed her ability to become a ball winner in her own right and then using her great skills to bring team mates into the game. She played mainly between the mid-field and down back where she provided some real leadership, but she also had a great ability to work into the forward line and kick goals for us. A great year Heidi.

Nell Fraser In her first season Nell proved to be an absolute natural. Her reading of the game in the backline was fantastic and she really learned quickly to back her judgement and attack the ball, as a result we often saw Nell hit the ball at pace and run it out of our backline. Nell was also dangerous whenever we moved her forward. Nell is another one who really worked hard to bring teammates into the game with her handballs. Her drive to improve as much as she can was typified by her learning to kick with both feet in her first season. Outstanding in our last game with a clear best on ground performance.

Stephanie Hagans Steph really developed through the year after a setback with a finger injury early in the season. Her marking in the last three rounds in the backline was a revelation for someone new to the game. Showing what great progress can be made once you get some confidence. She provided a great target for our kick ins and her one handed mark in the last game was a highlight. She was also a great contributor when she had to be shifted in to the ruck occasionally to help out.

88

2013 Yearbook

Isobel Kelly Isobel’s amazing stamina was the standout feature of her game, as well as her courage to put her light frame into the path of anything coming her way and try to win the ball. Isobel had no problems playing the entire game on the ball and still running past the opposition late in the last quarter. As the season went on and her kicking ability picked up she became a really valuable player.

Sophia Kimmins Sophia’s improvement during the year was sensational. By the end of the season Sophia was one of our most dependable midfielders in that she was always effective in making sure we were competitive at the centre bounces. Her work in defence was fantastic, often finding herself on players a lot faster but Sophia showed a great understanding of the game and was rarely beaten in a one on one contest.

Eliza Murphy Eliza played a really reliable role in defence for us during the season and was also effective when we moved her into the midfield at times. Eliza’s marking and kicking developed a lot during the course of the year and she was very sure with her hands, often picking the ball up cleanly off the ground in the middle of a pack. You always knew when you saw Eliza’s blue boots running into a pack in defence that there was a good chance we were going to hold up the opposition as she had a great competitive nature in defence and for someone who was new to the game was one of our most reliable tacklers.

Matilda Murphy Matilda was completely new to the game but played a really important role for us in our forward line. Typically playing as a deep forward she was exceptionally good at playing to instructions and many goals kicked by other girls in our team were as a direct result of Matilda having played her role at Full Forward. She was unlucky in the last couple of weeks not to have kicked some more goals herself as she had developed to the point where she was running onto the ball nicely and carrying it towards goal and, with a little bit more kicking experience, would have had a few goals.

Sarah Teasdale As one of the ‘experienced’ players of the team Sarah often had to bear a lot of responsibility to play in the midfield or defence with a lot of less experienced players. Sarah handled this beautifully and rose to the challenge while she provided support to the other girls. Another one of the more slightly built girls who often had to play on opposition who were physically much bigger but not once did Sarah shirk the task and often you would see Sarah bounce straight up from a tough bump or tackle to get to the next contest and win the ball. From a team perspective this was really important as it was this sort of effort that gave the less experienced girls a lot of confidence that they could do the same thing.

89

2013 Yearbook

Peta Wellington Peta had to cope with being thrown around a lot during the season to try and provide us some flexibility. In the second half of the season she spent a lot of time in the ruck, at times having to ruck the entire game. She never stopped trying and allowed our midfielders to compete on equal terms in the square. She was at her best when given a defensive role and she became a tackling machine, laying many really strong tackles on the opposition.

Nina Winton Rucking in Australian Rules seems to be something Nina was born for. She belied her lack of experience during the season by dominating ruck contests in the centre and around the ground. As the year wore on she also developed a great game sense and mastered our ‘wall’ to lock the ball in the forward line. She consistently punched the ball many meters our way from the centre bounces and was inspirational to the other girls in the way she would not be intimidated by some of the bigger girls from other teams. No matter who was coming at her Nina could always be relied upon to put her head over the ball. She also had a great sense of fun and her fist pumps when taking a mark were a trademark that showed the rest of the girls how to do their best and enjoy their footy, no matter what the score was.

Erin Cook Erin joined us for our last two games to get a taste of playing girls Australian Rules, having played in junior mixed teams. She really shone and her experience was obvious in the way she could read the play. Having that one extra player with experience made a big difference to us in the last couple of weeks and her influence on our forward line was really positive as she played a high forward role and was really effective in providing a link between our midfielders and forward line that we had struggled with during the earlier part of the season.

Wests Jags Gold Girls During the season a number of the Wests Jags Gold Girls helped us out and we were all really grateful for their efforts. The girls who helped were Ashleigh Larrain, Santana Lowe and Taylah Brewer. They often had to come and play a full game for us after a full game with the Gold team and did it with a smile, always giving it their best. Thanks a lot girls.

2013 Yearbook

Under 16 (Division 3) Coaches: Geoff Woolcock Assistant Coach: Brian Williams Manager: Simon Earle

This was a season of two halves for the boys, with a stuttering start that is typical of early season grading matches extending to the half-way point of the season where a couple of unlucky losses at home saw us second bottom at the mid-season break, only to come out and win 5 of our last 6 to snatch the fifth and final spot in the finals and then notch up a couple of rousing final wins before running out of steam in the preliminary final.

Thank you to all the parents for their tremendous support during the season, especially when our luck was going against us, and to magnificent sideline assistance from Brian, Glen and Simon. A special thanks to those boys who’ve played their final games at Oakman Pk, great servants of the club. When all’s said and done, it was a really fun season with a great bunch of boys and that’s what it’s all about.

MATTHEW MCAULIFFE Matt’s persistence at training was deservedly rewarded with an outstanding season culminating in a couple of dominating backline performances in our finals wins and the clear Most Improved player in the team. Appreciated his willingness to fill a backline spot every week and compete with his opponent no matter their ability.

JORDAN WILLIAMS Jordie was his usual consistent self, gut running to exhaustion every game and bobbing up with his fair share of goals. Some experience of rep footy this year will stand him in good stead for season 2014.

RYAN FOSTER Ryan started the season like the proverbial house on fire, constantly burrowing under packs to win contested ball and always presenting when it was his turn to go. Quicker hands as the year wore on and steady kicking for goal all adding to overall improvement.

JAMES O'SULLIVAN James’ attack on the footy mushroomed throughout the year and saw him not only win plenty of contested ball but also used it cleverly… will enjoy watching his steady improvement into U18s.

LIAM LAFFERTY Liam struggled early to adapt to the bigger bodies of U16s footy but a bit like the team, a mid-season father-son Kokoda trek saw him return full of confidence, meeting the ball at pace and delivering accurately by hand or foot.

2013 Yearbook

OLIVER WOOTTEN Ollie aka Mouse had a tough season, battling a number of game-day injuries but always giving the team 110% with his fierce attack on the footy. Complemented his game with poaching several handy majors when we ran him in the forward half in the latter part of the season.

JONATHAN MACANAWAI Jonny Mac had another wonderful season this year with his unique skill level, bearing most fruit when we settled him at CHF. Our leading goalkicker, he also grew considerable leadership skills as the boys looked up to him all year. A deserved B&F winner and a big footy future awaits.

LUC FERN A growth spurt pre-season saw Luc bring his considerable skills more often to the game, with several purple patches seeing him hit the scoreboard more regularly and a resilient performer that we relied on much amidst our early injury toll.

ROBERT PETTIS Our skipper Rob was accurately described last year as the ‘Ever-ready bunny; he just keeps going and going’. Really developed his leadership skills this year and carried us single-handedly over the line against the odds in the home game v Zillmere that was our turnaround performance. An intense competitor but a fantastic character who role modelled controlled aggression and umpires noticed with a top 4 finish in our Division.

ETHAN WOOLCOCK An interrupted season for Eth with a state schoolboys championship knock that set him back but returned with a vengeance to bolster our barnstorming run home and was outstanding in our finals wins.

LOCHIE GAW Lochie brought his love of AFL and clever footy brain into training and game day, especially when we settled on his natural home on a half-back flank, picking off every errant kick and inevitably sending it back pinpointed over 40m. With some more endurance, will be a v.handy senior footballer.

JAKE ROSELER Always aware we were losing Jake to rugby in the last couple of months, he nonetheless had a big impact on the games he played, especially with his no- nonsense attack on the footy in the middle of the ground. Welcome back with open arms in 2014!

FINN MCKEE Fought the good fight to secure Finn’s services and it was well worth it with his dashing work off fullback, building his game to the point where he was nailing 50m kick-ins by season’s end. A good sense of humour, he also nailed the dead fish soccer celebrations upon scoring goals at training, although couldn’t jag any on game day! 94

2013 Yearbook

CIAN HARRIS-LAVER Cian gathered a stack of possessions in our opening grading match and looked set for a big year until stress fractures kicked in. Was able to return for final few matches and a final but looking forward to his body being good to go in 2014.

RYAN CASSADY Rhino was an effective target for us all year working out of a forward pocket and plenty in his game to like. Bothered by a dodgy shoulder all year, he worked hard at training to become an improved contested mark and set shot.

HARRY EDMONDS Hard to think of another junior player who gives more pound per flesh than Harry with his fierce approach to contested situations never flinching and inspiring all around. Brought some extra strings to his game this year with smart running to receive and keeping the ball moving by hand and foot.

ROBBIE DOPKING Robbie was all set to be one of our key positions this year, but a succession of knocks and then illnesses got in the way too often. A lot to like whenever he did play a full game, most impressively away to Aspley when he owned CHB and another with lots of good footy in front of him.

FRASER LABROM The only 15yo in our leadership group, Frase had his own frustrations getting his game going in the first half of the year but when we did find his ‘natural’ spot playing a pivot role out of the midfield, his run and carry made him a v.dangerous opponent and one of the reasons our season ran as deeply as it did, deservedly winning our Best in Finals.

MITCH DOHERTY Another one of our boys to be plagued by injury, Mitch worked very hard to be an active contributor on the training track and on match day. Constant feeling among all watching that we’re yet to be the best of Mitch, one of the game’s real nice guys.

PAT GRAY With all the early problems with our talls, we shifted poor old Paddy around the park here there and everywhere. A breakthrough performance in the ruck away to eventual premiers Caboolture was the catalyst for an excellent second half where his one-handed control of ruck contests was often breathtaking.

TOM EARLE An impressive season from Tom who copped his fair share of knocks but managed to get up for nearly all our matches and give us plenty of drive off the back half. Built his endurance to provide an effective on-ball presence and his sheer weight of goals kicked at training translated to game day by season’s end! 95

2013 Yearbook

LEWIS D’ARCY Another whose season reflected the team’s fortunes with some fleeting but frustrating moments of consummate skill early on replaced by consistent and clever positioning in a centre square rucking role that was critical in our run home.

HAMISH BOWERS Great to have Ham return to footy this year and his confidence grew considerably to the point where he was soaring for contested marks and punching from behind whenever required, drawing on his basketball skills to find space and win his own ball.

ALEX PETROVIC Zander overcame his lack of foot speed to give us tremendous drive all year off a wing and used his voice perhaps more skilfully than any of his teammates to control games.....another off-field character, he was a happy ball hog in any muck around soccer match, and doubled up as an on-field commentator in numerous dialects!

UQ Bulldogs (Under 18) (Division 1) Coach: Brenton Crilly Assistant Coach: Neil Robinson Manager: Andy Rosen

It was tremendously pleasing to see the re-establishment of the UQ Bulldogs Under 18 team this year. It is now 9 years since the original Joint Venture was formed between Wests Juniors (WJAFC) and the University Of Queensland Red Lions (UQAFC), however unfortunately the U18 team has had to withdraw from the competition for the last 2 seasons due to lack of numbers. This season saw a restructuring of the seniors competition and UQAFC were elevated to SEQAFL Division 1. A requirement of the restructure was that UQ needed to field 3 Div. 1 teams being Seniors, Reserves and U18s who all play back to back games each Saturday.

By combining an initial start-up group of Wests Juniors U16s from 2012 and many hours of recruitment work predominantly from Richard Bennett and a couple of U18 parents, we were able to put a decent squad together and the U18s were born again. Once University started we also picked up some more handy players and ended up with a squad of about 30 that is ideal for U18s. We were also very fortunate to gain the services of two high quality coaches, Brenton Crilly (Coach) and Neil Robinson (Assistant Coach) both of who are current UQ Senior players. Neil also is a former Wests Junior player and past UQ Bulldog Captain.

Despite a modest start to the season of this newly created team at Division 1 level, the boys got better and better throughout the season and were more than capable of playing good footy at this level. We ended up 6th on the ladder at the end of season, 1 position off the final 5 but signs are already good for a stronger, more experienced squad in 2014. A number of the U18s players got the opportunity to play games for the seniors when they required some fill-ins and all did a tremendous job.

The U18s are alive and well and once again present as a genuine pathway for our junior players to advance to high standard senior football.

Club Umpires

Umpires Report 2013

This year, Wests Juniors sponsored four club umpires, with two of them starting their first year of umpiring. All of our umpires trained and studied hard, focusing on their continued development throughout the season. They quickly settled into the routine of weekly feedback and improvement, training, and discussion, and then onto the field to put it all into practice. Some also had the opportunity to umpire games during half-time at the Gabba, giving them a taste of the big league!

Wests Juniors also provided umpires for the Moggill club this season. This not only provided extra games for the umpires, but an excellent opportunity to continue their development at other grounds. Rich Pidgeon, the president of Moggill Juniors AFC noted:

“Moggill Juniors AFC does not have youth teams to draw from, so we partnered with Wests Juniors to provide us club umpires for our games. The team of young men who came out to umpire the game were enthusiastic, bright and committed to AFL footy. They were a very positive reflection on West Juniors, and our Club, players and parents were all very grateful for their efforts! Thanks again for helping to make a great season in 2013 for the Moggill Mustangs!”

Our club continually receives very positive feedback on the quality and professionalism of our umpires. Coaches, managers, and parents from all teams comment on their skills and performance. Good umpires improve the enjoyment of the game for everyone and our umpires were a role model for many other clubs in the competition.

Fraser Labrom returned to the club for his third year of club umpiring. Continuing his role of senior umpire, he continued to provide excellent guidance and leadership for the newer umpires and assisted with their training. Fraser has a very positive style of umpiring and he demonstrates at every game how much he loves to umpire. Even with a significant injury, Fraser was able to produce an excellent umpiring performance. From pre-match briefing to final whistle, Fraser maintained an exceptionally high standard of umpiring and was an excellent role model for all of the umpires.

Tom Earle returned from last year for his second year of club umpiring. Tom also provided valuable leadership and support for our newer umpires. Tom continued from last year with his excellent voice control of the game, and clear explanation of decisions. This goes a long way to helping parents to understand the decision and support it. Tom’s confidence grew throughout the season and

108

2013 Yearbook his skills continued to develop well. This allowed Tom to focus on the whole game, and not just the ball players, allowing him to correctly penalise off-the- ball infringements.

Julian Braybrook commenced his first year of umpiring. Julian has a family history of elite umpiring, and this showed immediately as he quickly adapted from player to umpire. His umpiring skills were well developed by the end of the season, and he confidently controlled the game with his whistle and voice. Julian has mastered the basics of umpiring and demonstrated that he has the ability to continue his development to follow in his father's footsteps and umpire at senior levels. His on-field enthusiasm ensured that all players thoroughly enjoyed their football.

Liam Martin added to his Auskick coaching role by joining as a first year umpire. His key strength was his skill at coaching the younger players during his umpiring by positioning and directing their play, one of the many roles of club umpires. This led to him to use his skills to umpire the practice games at Auskick. Liam is calm and quiet by nature, which are excellent attributes for a good umpire. He showed excellent control of the game and continued to develop his umpiring skills throughout the season. His positioning during play, especially around the pack, allowed him to adjudicate the play well resulting in excellent decisions.

One of our previous club umpires, Chris Smith, moved to the AFL Brisbane Juniors this year to continue to develop his umpiring skills. Chris has developed exceptional decision making skills and grown in confidence throughout the season, resulting in his recent appointment as an umpire for the U16 Div 1 semi- finals. Chris also supported our club’s Auskick program when his appointments allowed, and was asked to umpire a number of club games when other club umpires were not available. Thank you to Chris for continuing to support Wests Juniors.

This year, the AFL Brisbane Juniors chose Wests Juniors AFC as their training base for the umpires. All of the AFLBJ umpires were very complimentary of the quality of the field and the picturesque surroundings, but trying to squeeze that many umpires into our club rooms was a little tight! Pierce Field, the Umpire Coordinator for AFL Brisbane Juniors, said:

“Oakman Park has proven to be a great venue for the AFLBJ Umpires. With access to meeting areas and the majority of the ground, combined with the great support of Wests Juniors committee, the coaching staff and I could not be more pleased with the facility.”

2014 is already shaping up to be an excellent year for umpiring. It is anticipated that the majority of this year’s club umpires will return next year so the core excellence will continue. Any remaining appointments to the panel of umpires for next year will commence after the player registration days, as the number of 109

2013 Yearbook available umpiring positions will be limited by the number of teams that the club hosts.

Special thanks to the parents of the umpires for supporting their additional training times and match commitments. The umpires could not have done so well without your support.

Finally, due to my own umpiring commitments, I have decided to step down from the role of Club Umpire Coordinator at the end of this season. Paul Wilson has agreed to take on the role in 2014.
