  • Art Modell (1925-2012)
ART MODELL (1925-2012) Art Modell, whose remarkable 43-year NFL career made him a regular finalist for the Pro Football Hall of Fame, died today of natural causes at Johns Hopkins Hospital at the age of 87. Former Ravens president David Modell issued this statement: “Sadly, I can confirm that my father died peacefully of natural causes at four this morning. My brother John Modell and I were with him when he finally rejoined the absolute love of his life, my mother Pat Modell, who passed away last October. “’Poppy’ was a special man who was loved by his sons, his daughter-in-law Michel, and his six grandchildren. Moreover, he was adored by the entire Baltimore community for his kindness and generosity. And, he loved Baltimore. He made an important and indelible contribution to the lives of his children, grandchildren and his entire community. We will miss him.” As owner of both the Cleveland Browns (1961-1995) and the Baltimore Ravens (1996-2003), Modell directed teams that produced 28 winning seasons, 28 playoff games, two NFL Championships (1964 and 2000), three other appearances in NFL title contests (1965, ’68 and ’69), and four visits (1986, ’87, ’89 and 2000) to AFC Championships. A key figure in launching Monday Night Football, Modell chaired the NFL’s Television Committee for 31 years, setting the standard for rights’ fees for professional sports and TV networks. He was the only elected NFL president (1967-69) and he was Chairman of the Owners’ Labor Committee, which negotiated the NFL’s first collective bargaining unit with the players.

Gateway Economic Development Corporation of Greater Cleveland (Gateway) was formed in 1990 by the City of Cleveland and Cuyahoga County, for the purposes of financing, building, owning and operating the Gateway Sports Complex in downtown Cleveland. Gateway owns Quicken Loans Arena, as well as Progressive Field and surrounding common areas, including Gateway Plaza along Ontario Avenue. Gateway’s lease agreements with the Cleveland Indians and the Cleveland Cavaliers, as revised and extended in 2004 and 2007, facilitate Gateway’s ability to continue as a good steward of these two tremendous buildings, as it has been for a generation. The leases with the Indians and the Cavaliers require the teams to pay for operating and maintenance costs of their respective facilities, many of the capital repair costs, as well as all of the cost of operating the Gateway Corporation. Gateway’s responsibilities – pursuant to a budget agreed upon annually with the teams and financed by team rental payments - include common area maintenance, insurance, security, and oversight of the maintenance and capital repairs of the ballpark and the arena, ensuring that Gateway’s facilities are maintained to guarantee their long-term viability.

By Stephanie Slezycki • Senior Program Representative, Dept. 686 EB EMPLOYEES ach year, teams participating in the FIRST (For Inspiration and Recogni- tion of Science and Technology) Robotics Competition are given six weeks HELP STUDENTS to design, build, and test 120-lb robots for competition. The 2017 challenge, E FIRST STEAMWORKS, saw these teams competing on a steampunk- themed playing field. Each three-team alliance scored points by shooting balls to “KICK BOT” build pressure, manipulating gears to start rotors spinning, and boarding their airship. The alliance with the highest score at the end of the match was declared the winner. AT WORLD The 2017 FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) featured more than 83,000 stu- dents competing on 3,336 teams from 25 countries. Over 400 of these teams from ROBOTICS around the world qualified to attend the FRC Championship held last spring in St. Louis, Mo. For the first time ever, three of the teams representing Connecti- cut were supported by Electric Boat employee mentors, who volunteer countless COMPETITION hours each year to educate and guide the students to success. 12 | ELECTRIC BOAT NEWS | FALL/WINTER 2017 The Techno Ticks (Team 236) from Lyme-Old Lyme High School attend the FIRST Championship annually as a member of the Hall of Fame, having in the past won the Chairman’s Award, the most pres- tigious award in FIRST. This distinction honors the team that best embodies the purpose and goals of FIRST; the Techno Ticks serve as a role model for others to emulate. At the FRC Championship, teams were divided into six subdivisions, each named after a famous scien- tist, engineer, or inventor.

  • Players on Art Modell
PLAYERS ON ART MODELL Former Broncos and Ravens TE Shannon Sharpe: “Mr. Modell was one of the main reasons I came to Baltimore. I remember when I met him. He flew down to see me, and we flew back up to Baltimore together, and he learned so much about me and my family, and I learned about him as a man. I remember his words so vividly: He said, ‘Ozzie, get this deal done,’ and that was the start of something beautiful. “One of my favorite moments in the NFL was when he spoke to us in the locker room after the Super Bowl victory. He said, ‘This is the proudest day of my life; you guys make me proud.’ And then he started to break down. That touched me. You could not only see the emotion from him and from all of us in that room, you could feel it. Knowing how long he had been in the NFL and how many great players he had been around, it was such a great feeling to give him something that he wanted for so long. We all wanted it for him! “You see how close he was with his boys and how much he loved his wife, and he brought that atmosphere to the Ravens. He always had something positive to say, always had a joke to make you smile. I still picture him on his golf cart watching every practice, no matter what the weather was like. We were all in it together. The sport you see on TV today and what the NFL means to our society is in large part due to Mr.

  • NBA's REVIVAL IS PURE MAGIC by Michael Wilbon
NEWSLETTER #23 - 2005-06 NBA'S REVIVAL IS PURE MAGIC By Michael Wilbon Don't get me wrong, the NBA has had great teams since Michael Jordan retired from the Chicago Bulls after the 1997-98 season. The San Antonio Spurs teams, particularly the ones with Tim Duncan and David Robinson, could hold their own in any era. The Lakers of Phil Jackson, Shaquille O'Neal and Kobe Bryant were, at times, dominating and entertaining. And although great team play usually is enough to maximize interest in pro football and Major League Baseball, that simply isn't the case with professional basketball. The NBA has been, is now, and probably always will be a league driven by and dependent on its star power. It's been that way from Mikan and Cousy to Russell and Chamberlain to Oscar and West to Kareem and Julius to Bird and Magic to Sir Charles and M.J. to Shaq and Kobe. The greatest team in NBA history -- the 1992 Dream Team -- never even played a single league contest or a game of consequence on U.S. soil but was the most star-studded team ever put together anywhere. So there's a very easy answer to the questions of why these NBA playoffs have been so compelling, why TV ratings have been up and why there's a buzz about the NBA Finals in a way there hasn't been since Jordan's second retirement. After seven seasons of trying to convince fans that certain players were stars, the league has enjoyed a postseason where its most recognizable players led teams into the playoffs, then played the way stars historically have in the NBA.
