This Is Pac 10 Basketball This is Pac-10 Basketball With 15 NCAA Championships (by !ve different schools) under its belt, it's easy to see why Pac-10 Basketball has as rich and as storied a tradition of hoop excellence as any Conference – if not more so. Some of the best ever to play the game have passed through this league – Jason Kidd, Gary Payton, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (Lew Alcindor), Bill Walton, Hank Luisetti, Sidney Wicks, Bob Houbregs, Jack Gardner. The same is true on the coaching side – John Wooden, Slats Gill, Ralph Miller, Pete Newell, Marv Harshman, Everett Dean, Lute Olson. The “Conference of Champions” has claimed a record 15 NCAA Tournament titles, 34 NCAA Final Four Appearances, 60 consensus All-Americans, 16 National Players of the Year, 21 Naismith Memo- rial Basketball Hall of Fame members . well, you get the picture. Pac-10 Basketball began 92 seasons ago with the formation of the Paci!c Coast Conference. Cali- fornia won the !rst title in 1916 with a 5-3 record, ahead of competitors Oregon State (5-3) and Wash- ington (2-6). That season also produced the league's !rst All-American, Ade Sieberts of Oregon State. Six teams competed the following year, and Washington State’s 8-1 mark stood above the others. With the expansion of the PCC to eight teams in 1922, the league was split into north and south divi- sions, with the divisional champions meeting in a playoff. Idaho defeated California in the !rst playoff and produced the Conference's !fth All-American in eight seasons in Al Fox. UCLA's Lew Alcindor (Kareem Abdul-Jabbar) and The NCAA Tournament became a reality with the 1939 season, and a Pac-10 (PCC) team was the Bill Walton flank John Wooden - arguably two of !rst to win it, as Oregon defeated Texas, Oklahoma and Ohio State en route to the title in Evanston, Ill. the greatest college players and coach ever. USC was in the Final Four the next year, while Washington State advanced to the title game in 1941, but fell to Wisconsin by !ve, 39-34. Stanford claimed the following NCAA crown with a 53-38 win over Dartmouth. Pete Newell’s California Golden Bears won the 1959 NCAA title with a win over West Virginia, and were runners-up to Ohio State the following season. Then came UCLA and its unlikely-to-ever-be-duplicated-again feat of seven consecutive NCAA Championships (11 overall), which was engineered by the great John Wooden – “The Wizard of Westwood.” The Bruins actually won a pair of titles in 1964 and ’65, then began their streak in 1967 (Alcindor’s !rst season). A loss to North Carolina State in the 1974 Finals ended the streak, but UCLA came back the following season to defeat Kentucky for its 10th title in 12 years. After UCLA captured the school's 11th title in 1995 with a victory over Ar- kansas, the Arizona Wildcats became the !fth Pac-10 team to capture the league's 15th men's basketball championship in 1997. The Wildcats became the !rst team in the history of the tournament to defeat three number one seeds (Kansas, North Carolina and Kentucky) en route to the title. In recent years, the Pac-10 has enjoyed a large amount of success - as evidenced by NCAA "Sweet 16" appearances in 21 of the past 23 seasons, at least half its teams in postseason play in 20 of the last 22 seasons, 12 national and freshman players of the year in the last 21 seasons and a couple of NIT pre- and postseason titles, just to name a few of the accolades – giving the Pac-10 the right to proudly be referred to as “The Conference of Champions.” Oregon State's Gary Payton was one of college basketball's most This is Pac-10 Basketball. dominant players in the mid- 1980's. t /$""UJUMFTNPSFUIBOBOZPUIFSDPOGFSFODF t 4JODF UIF1BDIBTIBEQMBZFSTESBGUFEJOUIF mSTUSPVOEPGUIF/#"NPSFUIBOBOZPUIFSDPOGFSFODF Arizona’s Andre Iguodala is one of three former Pac-10 players to play for Team USA in the 2010 t 4JYGPSNFS1BDQMBZFSTPOUIF64"/BUJPOBM World Championships. 5FBNSPTUFSNPSFUIBOBOZPUIFSDPOGFSFODF Credit: Garrett Ellwood/NBAE/Getty Images 5)*4*41"$ #"4,&5#"-- ARIZONA WILDCATS ARIZONA NUMERICAL ROSTER WILDCAT FACTS No. Name Pos. • Renormalizing Individual Performance Metrics for Cultural Heritage Management of Sports Records
Renormalizing individual performance metrics for cultural heritage management of sports records Alexander M. Petersen1 and Orion Penner2 1Management of Complex Systems Department, Ernest and Julio Gallo Management Program, School of Engineering, University of California, Merced, CA 95343 2Chair of Innovation and Intellectual Property Policy, College of Management of Technology, Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne, Lausanne, Switzerland. (Dated: April 21, 2020) Individual performance metrics are commonly used to compare players from different eras. However, such cross-era comparison is often biased due to significant changes in success factors underlying player achievement rates (e.g. performance enhancing drugs and modern training regimens). Such historical comparison is more than fodder for casual discussion among sports fans, as it is also an issue of critical importance to the multi- billion dollar professional sport industry and the institutions (e.g. Hall of Fame) charged with preserving sports history and the legacy of outstanding players and achievements. To address this cultural heritage management issue, we report an objective statistical method for renormalizing career achievement metrics, one that is par- ticularly tailored for common seasonal performance metrics, which are often aggregated into summary career metrics – despite the fact that many player careers span different eras. Remarkably, we find that the method applied to comprehensive Major League Baseball and National Basketball Association player data preserves the overall functional form of the distribution of career achievement, both at the season and career level. As such, subsequent re-ranking of the top-50 all-time records in MLB and the NBA using renormalized metrics indicates reordering at the local rank level, as opposed to bulk reordering by era.
