Sangli, 416313, Maharashtra State, India; email: [email protected] ABSTRACT The study of bird species diversity and richness in newly formed habitats of Chandoli National Park in Western Ghats (now declared as international heritage), Maharashtra State, India was carried out in early wet and dry seasons. Since richness and diversity of bird species are good indicators of the ecosystem quality, this paper focused on providing some information on the abundance, diversity and activities of various bird species occurring in Chandoli National Park. To this aim, line transect survey was used to generate data for ecological analysis. Birds observed incuded resident, migratory and palearctic species. A total of 151 species repre- senting 15 orders and 45 families were recorded from September 2009 to August 2011, and a high value calculated for the Simpson’s Index of Diversity (0.8291) indicated a marked richness and diversity of bird species in the area under examination. The study was conducted from September 2009 to August 2011. The bird counts were carried out in the morning from 7.00 am to 10.00 am. and in the evening from 4.00 pm to 6.00 pm. A binocular (Olympus ) was used to confirm the identification of the birds; nests were located by sight. For every bird species the following parameters were recorded: (i) activity of the bird when first sighted; (ii) the number of bird species at every sighting; (iii) location of nests and species involved; all the numbers were noted. The spider fauna of India has never been studied in its entirety despite of contributions by many arachnologists since Stoliczka (1869). The pioneering contribution on the taxonomy of Indian spiders is that of European arachnologist Stoliczka (1869). Review of available literature reveals that the earliest contribution by Blackwall (1867); Karsch (1873); Simon (1887); Thorell (1895) and Pocock (1900) were the pioneer workers of Indian spiders. They described many species from India. Tikader (1980, 1982), Tikader, described spiders from India. Tikader (1980) compiled a book on Thomisidae spiders of India, comprising two subfamilies, 25 genera and 115 species. Pocock (1900) and Tikader (1980, 1987) made major contributions to the Indian Arachnology, have high lightened spider studies to the notice of other researcher. Tikader (1987) also published the first comprehensive list of Indian spiders, which included 1067 species belonging to 249 genera in 43 families.

Beehler* Abstract A cladistic analysis of Jerdon's Courser (Rhinoptilus bitorquatus) and eight allied taxa supports the validity of the Afro-Asian genus Rhinoptilus and indicates that the sister-species of the Indian relict bitorquatus is the Three-banded Courser (Rhinoptilus cinctus) of eastern Africa. The present distribution of these two sister forms is evidence for a former biotic link between peninsular India and the savanna habitats of eastern Africa. This distributional trend is corroborated by an additional list of forty-three species or sister-species pairs that exhibit this Afro-Indian pattern. We believe that these data support the notion that there once existed an Afro-Indian fauna that inhabited what was probably a continuous belt of savanna from southern Africa to southern India. The recovery plan for the critically-endangered Jerdon's Courser should include at- tempts to develop a captive population of R. cinctus, which could then be used to rear eggs taken from wild populations of bitorquatus. Captive breeding, in concert with local educa- tion and efforts to expand protected areas of prime habitat, offers the most promising in- tegrated strategy for the species' recovery. Introduction Jerdon's Courser, once thought to be extinct(Ripley 1952,1982, King 1981),was rediscoveredin the hillsof southern Andhra Pradesh in January 1986 (Bhushan 1986a, 1986b). We flew from Delhi to Guwahati, located in the far northeast of India. A long drive later through the hectic traffic of this enjoyable country, we arrived at our lodge in the evening. (Photo by tour participant Robert Warren) We enjoyed three full days of the wildlife and avifauna spectacles of the famous Kaziranga National Park. This park is one of the last easily accessible places to find the endangered Indian One-horned Rhinoceros together with a healthy population of Asian Elephant and Asiatic Wild Buffalo. We saw plenty individuals of all species; the rhino especially made an impression on all of us. It is such an impressive piece of evolution, a serious armored “tank”! On two mornings we loved the elephant rides provided by the park; on the back of these attractive animals we came very close to the rhinos. The fertile flood plains of the park consist of alluvial silts, exposed sandbars, and riverine flood-formed lakes called Beels. This open habitat is not only good for mammals but definitely a true gem for some great birds. Interesting but common birds included Bar-headed Goose, Red Junglefowl, Woolly-necked Stork, and Lesser Adjutant, while the endangered Greater Adjutant and Black-necked Stork were good hits in the stork section.

    Biodiversity Observations http://bo.adu.org.za An electronic journal published by the Animal Demography Unit at the University of Cape Town The scope of Biodiversity Observations consists of papers describing observations about biodiversity in general, including animals, plants, algae and fungi. This includes observations of behaviour, breeding and flowering patterns, distributions and range extensions, foraging, food, movement, measurements, habitat and colouration/plumage variations. Biotic interactions such as pollination, fruit dispersal, herbivory and predation fall within the scope, as well as the use of indigenous and exotic species by humans. Observations of naturalised plants and animals will also be considered. College, Rewa, (MP) - India 3, Research Officer, Fishermen Welfare and Fisheries Development Department, Bhopal, (MP) - India Abstract One hundred and twenty two species of birds belonging to 19 orders, 53 families and 101 genera were recorded at Chuhiya Forest, Rewa, Madhya Pradesh, India from all the three seasons. Out of these as per IUCN red list status 1 species is Critically Endangered, 3 each are Vulnerable and Near Threatened and rest are under Least concern category. Bird species, Gyps bengalensis, which is comes under Falconiformes order and Accipitridae family are critically endangered. The study area provide diverse habitat in the form of dense forest and agricultural land. Rose- ringed Parakeets, Alexandrine Parakeets, Common Babblers, Common Myna, Jungle Myna, Baya Weavers, House Sparrows, Paddyfield Pipit, White-throated Munia, White-bellied Drongo, House crows, Philippine Crows, Paddyfield Warbler etc. were prominent bird species of the study area, which are adapted to diversified habitat of Chuhiya Forest. Human impacts such as Installation of industrial units, cutting of trees, use of insecticides in agricultural practices are major threats to bird communities.
