MJ APPROVED: TRAVEL The Painted Desert Respite The Saguaro, Scottsdale With its sandstone buildings and the rocky Sonoran desert surrounding it, Scottsdale, Arizona isn’t exactly known for eye-popping color. That’s why the Saguaro hotel, a 1960s motel renovated with vivid hues inspired by indigenous flora – not to mention mod design elements like solid-colored walls, light woods, and black-and-white photos of local cacti – makes a strong first impression. The 5.5.-acre property, however, offers more than good looks (as well as firm-but-comfy beds in spacious rooms with flatscreen TVs and iPod docks). It’s located in the city’s historic “old town” district and literally next door to the performing arts center, but inside the gates a party is going on. At least that’s one way to describe the lively, expertly DJ-ed pool scene, and you’ll want a room with a view of one of the two palm-lined swimming holes. ‘Iron Chef’ Jose Garces helms the in-house restaurant, Distrito, and he’s brought a Mexico City-style cuisine, full of bright flavors and fresh ingredients, to a spot that could have easily settled for another “New American eatery.” We frequented the area to tour Frank Lloyd Wright’s home and school Taliesin West, which is a short drive away, as well as to swing our drivers on some of the finest fairways in the southwest, especially at the Troon North Golf Club, which sprawls around natural ravines and boulders. Back at the hotel, which draws a hip, youthful adult crowd and may offer you a room with a cow’s skull on a side table, we enjoyed a powerful glass of rye at Garces’ bar Old Town Whiskey, which specializes in Americana-style spirits. -

Las Vegas, Nevada. 000792 THE CHURCH ROCK URANIUM MILL TAILINGS SPILL: A HEALTH AND ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT Executive Summary The largest single release of liquid radioactive waste in the Uruted States occurred at the United Nuclear Corporation^ uranium mill near Church Rock, New Mexico, in July 1979. This document reports the results of environmental monitoring conducted by the New Mexico Envi- ronmental Improvement Division (EID) subsequent to the mill tailings spill* Interpretation of data leads to the general conclusion that although the spill was potentially hazardous. Its short-term and long- term impacts on people and the environment were quite limited. How- ever/ the data suggest that dewatering effluents (water from under- ground uranium mines) continually pumped into the Puerco River may represent a greater long-term hazard than the spill. Recommendations are made regarding continued environmental monitoring and resumption of normal land and water use along the Puerco River. FOR ADMINISTRATIVE USE LIMITED DISTRIBUTION PUBLIC HEALTH SERVlCE-CDC-Atlanta KOT TOR PUBLICATION EPI-79-94-2 December 24, 1980 TO Director, Centers for Disease Control FROM Chronic Diseases Division Bureau of Epidemiology : • i I'J' ! •t;?| SUBJECT: Biological Assessment After Uranium Mill Tailings Spill, Church Rock, New Mexico SUMMARY On July 16, 1979, a tailings pond dam broke near Church Rock, New Mexico, spilling liquid and solid wastes contami- nated with radioactive uranium, thorium, radium, lead, and polonium- Subsequent evaluation of 6 Navajos potentially exposed to the materials spilled in the Rio Puerco River showed them to have no detectable increase in radioactivity by whole-body counting and no increase in urinary radio- nuclides* Since food-chain analysis is a more sensitive indicator of possible radiation dose, 8 local and 3 control animals were aufcopsied to determine radionuclide concentrations in edible tissues. Calculations indicate that human doses which would result from consumption of such animals would be higher from local than from control animals; however, the data also suggest chat exposure from chronic ingest ion of uranium mine dewatering effluent may be responsible for the elevated radionuclide concentrations found in tissue of local animals. Spore-pollen assemblages from the Poleo Sandstone, Petrified Forest, Lindström et al. 2 26 and 'siltstone' members are dominated by pollen of corystospermous seed ferns (Alisporites) 27 and voltziacean conifers (Enzonalasporites, Patinasporites). Other abundant taxa include 28 Klausipollenites gouldii and the enigmatic fused tetrad Froelichsporites traversei, whereas 29 spores of ferns and fern allies are generally rare. -

HECKERT2 INew Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science, 1801 Mountain Road N.W., Albuquerque, New Mexico 87104; 2Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences, University of New Mexico,Albuquerque, New Mexico 87131-1116 Abstract-Triassic strata exposed. in the Lucero uplift of Cibola, Valencia and Socorro Counties are nonmarine red beds of the Moenkopi Formation and Chinle Group. Moenkopi Formation strata disconformably overlie Middle Permian (Guadalupian) limestones and dolomites of the San Andres Formation and are mostly grayish red, trough-crossbedded and ripple-laminated micaceous litharenites intercalated with beds of intraformational conglomerate and grayish red, micaceous siltstone and mudstone. Charophytes, ostracods and capitosauroid amphibians indicate the Moenkopi Formation in the Lucero uplift is of Middle Triassic (early Anisian) age. Overlying Chinle Group strata consist of (ascending) the Shinarump, Bluewater Creek, Petrified Forest, Owl Rock and Rock Point Formations. In the Lucero uplift, strata of the San Pedro Arroyo Formation laterally replace Bluewater Creek Formation strata south of the Rio Salado. Shinarump Formation strata are extrabasi nal conglomerates (mostly Paleozoic limestone clasts) and sandstones as much as 17 m thick that discon formably overlie Moenkopi strata. Locally, pedogenically modified sandstones, conglomerates and siltstones - the "mottled strata" laterally replace Shinarump conglomerates and sandstones. Bluewater Creek Formation strata are at least 70 m thick and are mostly reddish brown siltstones, mudstones and ripple-laminated sand stones The distinctive McGaffey Member - 5-6 m of mostly ripple-laminated sandstone is present in the upper half of the Bluewater Creek Formation in the northern part of the Lucero uplift. -
