Extensive research has been conducted over the years towards the design and development of several anonymous P2P file sharing protocols and systems. Size of the Anonymity Set plays a crucial role in determining the degree of anonymity being provided by such networks. -

Anonymous channels are necessary for a multitude of privacy-protecting protocols. Onion routing is probably the best known way to achieve anonymity in practice. However, the cryptographic as- pects of onion routing have not been sufficiently explored: no satisfactory definitions of security have been given, and existing constructions have only had ad-hoc security analysis for the most part. We provide a formal definition of onion-routing in the universally composable framework, and also discover a simpler definition (similar to CCA2 security for encryption) that implies security in the UC frame- work. We then exhibit an efficient and easy to implement construction of an onion routing scheme satisfying this definition. 1 Introduction The ability to communicate anonymously is requisite for most privacy-preserving interactions. Many cryptographic protocols, and in particular, all the work on group signatures, blind signatures, electronic cash, anonymous credentials, etc., assume anonymous channels as a starting point. One means to achieve anonymous communication are mix-networks [6]. Here, messages are wrapped in several layers of encryption and then routed through in- termediate nodes each of which peels off a layer of encryption and then forwards them in random order to the next node. This process is repeated until all layers are removed. The way messages are wrapped (which determines their path through the network) can either be fixed or can be chosen by each sender for each message. -

Review of the EU copyright framework European Implementation Assessment Review of the EU copyright framework: The implementation, application and effects of the "InfoSoc" Directive (2001/29/EC) and of its related instruments European Implementation Assessment Study In October 2014, the Committee on Legal Affairs (JURI) requested from the European Parliament Research Service (EPRS) an Ex Post Impact Assessment on Directive 2001/29/EC on the harmonisation of certain aspects of copyright and related rights in the information society (InfoSoc). This EPRS publication was originally commissioned in the context of JURI's own- initiative implementation report, which was adopted in Plenary in July 2015, Rapporteur Julia Reda MEP. However, it is also relevant to the work of JURI Committees' Working Group on Intellectual Property Rights and Copyright (CWG), chaired by Jean Marie Cavada MEP. Furthermore, this request was made in the wider context of the Commission's review of the EU legislative framework on copyright, and the ensuing legislative proposals, which have been a long time in the planning and which are now expected for the 4th quarter of 2015. The objective of these proposals is to modernise the EU copyright framework, and in particular the InfoSoc Directive, in light of the digital transformation. Accordingly, in response to the JURI request, the Ex-Post Impact Assessment Unit of the European Parliament Research Service decided to produce a "European Implementation Assessment on the review of the EU copyright framework". Implementation reports of EP committees are now routinely accompanied by European Implementation Assessments, drawn up by the Ex-Post Impact Assessment Unit of the Directorate for Impact Assessment and European Added Value, within the European Parliament's Directorate-General for Parliamentary Research Services. -

Solving this challenge is essen- tial to provide anonymity in group communication. Every exchanged message leaks metadata: this information de- scribes the communication itself with, among others, sender, re- cipients, frequency of the communication. While the law pro- tects this information, it is often published and misused with consequences for the participants of the communication—often consequences particular for the senders of information. Anonymous communication systems like Tor break the link be- tween senders and recipients of messages and diminish emerg- ing metadata. However, their design requires duplicating mes- sages for all recipients early, mostly at the sender itself. With that, the system has to handle an unnecessary burden of pro- cessing identical messages. This dissertation contributes a novel mechanism that establishes communication groups such that the message duplication is pushed as close to the recipients as pos- sible. -

However, the state-of-the-art anonymity networks do not provide an effective trust model. As a result, users cannot circumvent malicious or vulnerable routers, thus making them susceptible to malicious router based attacks (e.g., correlation attacks). In this paper, we propose a novel social network based trust model to help anonymity networks circumvent malicious routers and obtain secure anonymity. In particular, we design an input independent fuzzy model to determine trust relationships between friends based on qualitative and quantitative social attributes, both of which can be readily obtained from existing social networks. Moreover, we design an algorithm for propagating trust over an anonymity network. We integrate these two elements in STor, a novel social network based Tor. We have implemented STor by modifying the Tor’s source code and conducted experiments on PlanetLab to evaluate the effectiveness of STor. Both simulation and PlanetLab experiment results have demonstrated that STor can achieve secure anonymity by establishing trust-based circuits in a distributed way. Although the design of STor is based on Tor network, the social network based trust model can be adopted by other anonymity networks. Preface When I was choosing my thesis topic, I originally came up with an idea of designing a decen- tralized social network. After realizing how ambitious that goal was, I later decided to focus on more fundamental issues first and create a library that would allow for building any de- centralized applications, running purely on an overlay network consisting of smartphones. Rather than reinventing the wheel, I took inspiration from an existing networking library de- veloped at TU Delft over the last decade and created its wire-compatible implementation in Kotlin. Interestingly, in the end, I have even implemented a trivial social network to demon- strate the usage of the library, returning back to the original idea. I would like to thank my supervisor Johan Pouwelse for an endless stream of fresh ideas and valuable feedback, and to PhD students of the Delft Blockchain Lab for numerous coffee meetings and for serving me as a walking documentation of the existing codebase.
