We thank you Lord for this Rotary meeting. We invoke your blessings on this meeting and all who grace it with their presence. This prayer we make in Jesus name, Amen.

President’s Message

Dear Centro Ladies,

I looked up how Rotary Club was defined and what is means by reading books and surfing Rotary online sites. However it is defined, it always comes out with one single thought, as how Attorney Paul P. Harris, founder of The Rotary Club has explained it: “Rotary Club” is an international service organization whose stated purpose is to bring together business and professional leaders in order to provide humanitarian services, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and help build goodwill and peace in the world. It is a secular organization open to all persons regardless of race, colour, creed, religion, gender, or political preference. With this we established the Rotary's pri- mary motto "Service above Self"; and an earlier motto, "One profits most who serves best”.(Source: Rotary International website).

Upon reading this I was filled with thoughts and a question: Am I really serving as a Rotarian, with all its great purpose? As Rotarians, regardless of how we stand in our individual clubs, it is important that we find some time to look into ourselves and determine our purpose -- why we are part of this organiza- tion? In the end, I have the confidence that whatever hardships and hindrances that will come in our way, our sincerity and devo- tion to serve “The Rotary Way” will always prevail.

Yours in Rotary,

All Star President Evs Laranga

Samuel Frobisher Owori, a Ugandan businessman and a member of the Rotary Club of Kampala, will become president-nominee on 1 Oc- tober.

The 2016-17 Nominating Committee for President of Rotary Interna- tional has unanimously nominated Samuel Frobisher Owori, of the Rotary Club of Kampala, Uganda, to be the president of Rotary Inter- national in 2018-19. He will be declared the president-nominee on 1 October if no challenging candidates have been suggested. Owori says he sees in Rotary "an incredible passion to make a differ- ence." As president, he plans to "harness that enthusiasm and pride so that every project becomes the engine of peace and prosperity."

ROTARY INTERNATIONAL News & Updates

Owori's chief concerns as a Rotary leader are membership and exten- sion. Since he served as district governor, the number of clubs in Uganda has swelled from nine to 89. He urges past, present, and fu- ture leaders to work together to engage more women, youth program participants, alumni, and community members to increase Rotary's membership in the coming years. "There are many places which need Rotary and numerous potential members who have never been invited," he says. "The problem is Ro- tarians who got in and closed the doors." Owori is chief executive officer of the Institute of Corporate Govern- ance of Uganda. Before that, he was executive director of the African Development Bank, managing director of Uganda Commercial Bank Ltd., and director of Uganda Development Bank. He has studied law, employment relations, business management, corporate resources management, microfinance, and marketing at institutions in England, Japan, Switzerland, Tanzania, and the United States, including Harvard Business School. Since becoming a member in 1978, Owori has served Rotary as region- al Rotary Foundation coordinator, regional RI membership coordinator, RI Representative to the United Nations Environment Program and UN- Habitat, and RI director. He has been a member or chair of several committees, including the International PolioPlus Committee, the Drug Abuse Prevention Task Force, and the Audit Committee. Most recently, Owori served as trustee of The Rotary Foundation, chair of The Rotary Foundation's Finance Committee, and a member of the Investment Committee. Owori is a Benefactor of The Rotary Foundation, and he and his wife, Norah, are Major Donors and Paul Harris Fellows. The Nominating Committee members are Sudarshan Agarwal, Rotary Club of Delhi, Delhi, India; Şafak Alpay, Rotary Club of Istanbul-Sisli, Turkey; Ronald L. Beaubien, Rotary Club of Coronado, California, USA; John B. Editorial

Missing reading

I love reading books. I always have.

But for the past few years, my book reading has declined drastically. The books I bought months ago are gathering dust on my shelves. Before, I used to finish books from my fave author just a few hours after I bought it.

So what happened? I guess technology has taken over my free time. The more I think how far long I’ve missed reading books, the more I become frus- trated. These past few days, make that months, I’ve been spending so much time in front of a computer or on my phone: surfing, commenting on someone else social page, etc. I am also playing games, and doing what nots from my phone.

When my internet stops working, I would be all fussy and call the telecomm service for immediate repair. I could have spent the downtime reading but I didn’t.

On trips abroad, I would normally bring a book to read at the airport while waiting. The last time I went on a trip, I bought an e-book of a legal thriller, my fave, hoping that I could finish it before the trip ends which was two weeks long. I am so disappointed in myself that I haven’t been able to open it.

Though I regret not having much time (or effort) to read books, I feel that browsing the web, or reading social media posts is not entirely a waste of time. O well, life is full of options and even if you wish you can do both, one has to make a choice.

Daily Life Jokes My Son’s #1 Concern

When my three-year-old was told to pee in a cup at the doctor’s office, he unexpectedly got nerv- ous. With a shaking voice, he asked, “Do I have to drink it?”

The Deadliest Job in WWII My high school assignment was to ask a veteran about World War II. Since my father had served in the dur- ing the war, I chose him. After a few basic questions, I very gingerly asked, “Did you ever kill anyone?” Dad got quiet. Then, in a soft voice, he said, “Probably. I was the cook.”

Wearing husband googles The party’s host paid me a great compliment. “You are a good look- ing woman”, he said. “Honest, I’ve had only one beer.” My glow was only slightly dimmed when my husband interjected, “Imagine how great she’ll look after two”.
